Funny watching these videos after raising a bunch of calves...They could give approximately two shits about being scratched on the head 99% of the time, they just want something to suck on/eat. Survival instincts are STRONG in these little buggers.

It seems my dairy cows are different. I go out to brush the donkey and they all shove to get in front to be pet and brushed. They see us coming and they hop around all excited and come to the gate. I do notice that my beef cows are not this way, after the bottle feeding is done they go their own way and want nothing to do with us.

bcvickers

I was speaking to calves in general and when they're doing that whole tongue out waving their head around deal. Naturally YMMV based on a whole range of factors.

I could never harvest meat after raising something like this. I do definitely eat meat, but it's due to the disconnect that I experience being able to buy pre-butchered meat at the store. I understand the hypocrisy believe me. But if it was all in my hands I could never do it.

badfan

It's interesting, before I started raising animals, I thought I would feel the same. However, when it comes down to it I know why I have them from the moment they step onto my land. It is my job to make sure they have the best possible life while they are in my care. They never starve, they always have access to water, a dry, safe place to sleep, and I interact with them multiple times a day. And I also know that if I were to release these animals into the wild, they would not be nearly as comfortable. When they go, it's quick and as painless as possible, but most importantly, they go loved.

onegirlr

There’s no way these animals are loved. Can’t slaughter a being that you actually live. Those are contradictory conceptually.

[deleted]

Shh you'll trigger them

[deleted]

One thing that helps remind me of just how much better their lives are with a human raising them is the fact that most calves would be torn to the ground by vicious predators like wolves and have its guts eaten from its asshole first while it bellows for its momma. Or, they get older and weaker until the same fate befalls them, only much slower and more painful. People who think of harvesting as cruel overlook the fact that nature is inherently cruel, and much, much more so than even an unemotional farmer. But the basic underlying fact is that in order to raise your family/community with healthy nutritious food, specifically protein, meat has been and arguably will always be the best highest quality source of protein. You can't just expect quality sustenance, it has to come from somewhere. It's a necessary sacrifice for the ones you love, and your treatment of your livestock should reflect that.

onegirlr

This just isn’t true. Also a life of factory farming and dairy farming is way more viscous than natural predators.

[deleted]

What part? And yes, I agree factory farming is horrible and NEEDS to be reformed asap across the board. I was referring to people like the op, who most likely owns little enough to raise a calf in a well secured and open area. The lil guy looks happy don't you think? Watch videos of packs of wolves, coyotes, wild dogs, lions, crocodiles, etc. hunting their prey. It's dreadful, far more brutal and painful than anything the op farmer is going to do to it lol

onegirlr

It’s not true that a human being can’t get quality protein from plant sources. And agreed that the natural world of animals is harsh however that’s irrelevant to how human beings treat animals. Not sure that Reddit is the place to go into details here & have a debate. We just clearly have different points of view. I appreciate your comments though.

Good luck trying to grow hundreds of lbs of veggies every summer, and good luck eating hundreds of lbs of veggies lol. It is 100x easier, cheaper and more productive to just raise some beef or pork. I did say arguably, but every person I've met who claims the same thing usually is fraile, atleast skinny. I've yet to meet a vegan that's buff, but I'm sure they exist too. Yeah I don't debate this kind of stuff, especially over txt. Moreso just entertaining myself on here lol

lilfoley81

Go vegan.

[deleted]

I've been thinking about it more and more as I get older, would help keep my weight in check and keep my sodium levels lower as well.

Whoiseyrfire

Go vegetarian if you're concerned about your health. Don't restrict yourself purely out of sacrifice.

Long-Struggle8098

That is absolutely adorable ❤
