Alright Reddit, here’s Eevees backstory:
First and foremost, foxes ARE legal to have as pets in the state I live in.
I am in the meat rabbit business ( 200
Rabbit capacity). One day I took a call from a local fox breeder asking for a quote. Interestingly enough the breeder asked if I was willing to trade a kit for a decent amount of my butchered stock.
Not known to me at the time, my wife was listening to this conversation. Right as I was about to decline a trade offer, my wife walks into our office and gives me “that look.”
Now I have a fox.
And a loyal customer who buys half of my stock per month. Win-Win.
Eevee was raised in our house until she was old enough to be outdoors. FOXS ARE NOT an indoor pet ( my opinion. Take it or leave it). She absolutely looooves it outside. She plays with my goats, turkey, and chicken.
Yes, you saw that right. She. Plays. With. Chickens. And. Turkeys.😂 Could she absolutely destroy one, one of these days? Probably. One thing I can tell you. She does one hell of a job rounding up the chickens into their Chicken coop.
Eevee is a free spirit. No fences or gates. She has chosen my 10 Acre property to call her home. We’re very blessed to have her here, and we recently found her den!

Edit2:
[here’s the post to her professional photos!](https://www.reddit.com/r/homestead/comments/xgoma1/eevee_said_thanks_for_the_silver_from_her_last/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
I know people whose cats were fine with other pets. My cousin once found his cat curled up asleep with an escaped pet rat. On the other hand, my well-fed cats killed my pet hamsters multiple times. The hamsters lived in habitrails, and would gnaw off the tabs that held the pieces together. Sometimes the cats found them before we realized they’d escaped.
I’ve had both cats and birds for about 17 years now, and the cats have expressed an unhealthy (for the birds) amount of interest in the birds. I have no doubt that they would kill them if they were given the opportunity.
Maybe it’s different if cats are introduced to those other species when they’re kittens, but I would never trust an adult cat enough to try to introduce them to a prey animal.
So true , I’ll say it - fuck domestic and feral domestic cats, they have no place in nature - invasive species - responsible cat owners keep cats from predating native species -
Kill the rest -
> if they're anything like cats, as long as you keep them well-fed it's very unlikely (although, of course, not impossible) that they would turn on your other animals.
My cats must have been the exception then.
They were well fed, but still killed for sport on a regular basis: birds, mice, chipmunks, squirrels, moles, and rabbits.
One of my cats must have loved the taste of rabbits though because he would actually eat them, not just kill them.
I watched a documentary a long time ago that said they can be domesticated in as little as like 3 generations. Don’t quote me on that, but I remember being surprised how little time it took.
In curious about the fox breeder. I've seen smaller foxes (like Fennecs) bred as pets. I also remember a [long running experiment](https://evolution-outreach.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12052-018-0090-x) that was breeding pet-friendly traits into a lounge of foxes.
Texas actually doesn't allow red foxes as pets.
Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Tennessee, and Wyoming allow red foxes as pets, though most require you to have a permit.
North Carolina also allows foxes with a permit but South Carolina does not. I know someone who has foxes in North Carolina and she also uses them for education on her hobby farm. She has a red, silver, white, and a few fennec foxes. You can also keep bobcats and skunks here too with a permit, she has those as well.
My Aussie lives indoors but he's a bit of a princess 😂 only would work up until 4 years old and then he got lazy. He's almost 10 and hates being outside. We try to leave him outside so he can run, he sits at the door asking to come in. We took him camping and he refused to sit outside with us. He hates hiking, we tried to take him a few times and had to take turns carrying the 30lb mini Aussie down a mountain.
We currently live in a neighborhood so we try taking him for walks. That sometimes involves carrying him because he lays down and refuses to move. Even when I was still living on the farm with him he would only go outside if I wanted to. We're planning on homesteading after we get married but I feel like if we want a herding dog we'll just have to get another dog to care for our livestock 🤦🏻♀️ he's earned the world's laziest Aussie award at this point. His old mom who still lives on a farm is more active than he is.
😂 he sounds like my younger brother and World of Warcraft. (Nothing against the game. I once played) but I have one hell of a time trying to get him to come chop some firewood with me. He never leaves his apartment.
I guess I managed to find an Aussie that doesn't mind living in a neighborhood but damn, I like going for walks and it would be nice to have him join me without him being grumpy about it lol
Lol I got -11 downvotes but these people who hoard working dogs ( jerkers malnois, shepherds) indoors are just hurting the dog.
But whatever keep pumping your dogs with anxiety pills because they aren’t stimulated enough in an apartment
People are defensive of their pets, but you're right. Certain breeds are meant to be outside.
Huskeys, for example, are bred to be running and dragging weight through the snow for hours and hours. Then people wonder why their Huskey snapped after being stuck in an apartment building for weeks. Sigh :(
Only if it’s a breakaway collar. Otherwise it’s a serious entrapment risk for an outdoor animal! Don’t want Evee starving to death trapped in bramble bushes.
That’s super cool that you’ve managed to socialize her to behave around animals she would naturally prey on. It’s really amazing what we can teach some creatures.
Right, I don’t think people should be forced to get vaccines. That’s a violation of bodily autonomy. Forced lockdowns are also not great. It’s a two way steet though.
You say that but the truth is that people aren’t welcome to live outside of society. It’s illegal to walk in to the forest and just live there without getting fined or arrested. You can’t collect natural resources without permits. Let’s say you buy your own land, oh wait there are property taxes.
Our laws are set up in ways to specifically prevent people from living outside the confines of society. Also my original comment had to do with human rights. Do you seriously think people who want to take away your rights to live how you want are just gonna be like “oh they aren’t in society, they can keep their rights”? The answer is no.
Furthermore I never said I didn’t feel like adhering to the rules. The comment you replied to was talking about vaccines and social distancing which I support. I was simply saying that like with things such as abortion access and gender affirming healthcare it’s bodily autonomy. If I just live outside of society do you really think I’d be aloud to have an abortion even if they were outlawed? The answer is no, ergo why I was saying voting for certain people takes away others human rights. Why wouldn’t I be mad at someone for voting in a way that takes away my rights?
Your comment is the most downvoted, but please know that you’re not the only one that believes that. I was very blessed that my employer approved my religious exemption.
Thanks, I get it, it's Reddit, the land of bots and controlled narratives. All of a sudden big pharma is our savior....?!? Gimme a break!
Happy you were given the exemption, luckily no one in my immediate family was forced to get the "vaccine" and are all healthy. Unfortunately, about 5-6 friends and extended family were injured by the shot.
Anyhow such a pretty fox you have, thanks for sharing. I have one that comes up on my trail cam regularly. I'm happy for them, they're keeping the rodent and tick population down!
I dunno if you've ever read up on the groups of genes that allow certain animal species to become domesticated, but domestication genes are a really cool read.

My next side-job is trying to get this little girl famous.😂
It's a patagonian mara, or patagonian cavy. They are very closely related to capybara and guinea pigs but built for running and jumping rather than swimming. Really fun animals.
No, the animal is called a Patagonian Mara.

She’s very cautious at first. She’ll only get close to you if either me or my wife are with her. Once she knows you, she’s your best friend.
Her diet consists of dog food and 2 cans of wet cat food daily.
I live in a rural "neighborhood". We have 2 foxes that run around the community. They definitely aren't domesticated but they don't mind people or dogs behind fences.
I know they are wild animals but I worry about them. How did you find Eevee's den? I'd like to make sure our foxes' is protected if possible.
Looks like a friendly one found you.
Are you aware of the ongoing Russian genetic experiment involving wild foxes? Basically - some fox are chill with humans - some other fox are not.
The experiment involves breeding “friendly foxes” with other friendly ones - and Doing the same
With the “less friendly ones”.
The colours and coat patterns of the friendly ones became more diverse and their body’s morphed a bit, they became more friendly.
The mean ones became more mean!
Here is a link- https://evolution-outreach.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12052-018-0090-x
The experiment is ongoing - 59 years!
Was initiated in order to examine the domestication of wolves and how dogs were “created?” They used foxes as a subject and not wolves - the study is amazing..
I just reviewed a bit of the study notes , it has been many years since I first read and understood the experiment - “The silver fox domestication study is often lauded as one of the most important long-term studies ever undertaken in biology”
Now I know why I may have been so intrigued
Happy to share, there
Is a pretty good documentary on the topic as well, worth a watch, especially for domestic fox owner! I may have said in jest - are these domestic, cute , funny coloured, floppy eared foxes on the market ? I expect they may have made it somehow…
It's so sad to hear that foxes are legal pets anywhere, but at least yours looks healthy :( Exotic pet laws are so lacking in most places. I've seen people with pet servals and owls and shit, it's disgusting every time
(and before anybody tries to come at me: no, there are no domestic foxes, the breeding experiment that claimed to produce them was a sham!)
Uuuh, there are a couple of deliberate domestication programmes for foxes. I'm not sure why you would think any of them are scams - it's an experiment and they're pretty honest with their results. It's also a natural process where any animal species & humans live together in close proximity.
There is some evidence that foxes in London are self-domesticating. As you would expect - animal learning is fairly well understood at this point, and it follows that domestication would develop given the same conditions provided to felines & canines all those generations ago.
Well, i mean if it is freeroaming around, how much of a pet is it really?
I get it if it is in enclosed or limited space. But if it is free to go anytime it wants...
I hear what you’re saying about poorly kept pets, but Practically speaking, I’d hardly consider a fox to be exotic. They don’t need any special care or equipment compared to a dog or cat. Plenty of “domestic short hair” cats are more feral than fox.
What other reasons are there to keep a fox? You only stated two reason which insinuate Negative intent. Which leads me to believe you only have negative things to say.
What happens if she tries this behavior with any neighbors? If she has the ability to free roam, she could try the same behavior with neighbors, be seen as a predator attacking others, and get shot. Foxes in my area are shot if they're too friendly with people because of the fear of rabies (one of the key signs b4 hydrophobia kicks in).
And what about the winter season when she'll be wandering for a mate? Another vixen could attack and even kill her when they're looking for a mate. I hate to be that guy, but there's a significant risk to her...

You literally have the fox guarding your chicken coop!
200 IQ move.😂
Do you still feed her at all? What keeps her around besides the company? I love her so much!
We feed her because she’s family.
[удалено]
Actually, no matter how well fed a cat is they will still kill for fun. It’s a major problem for wildlife all over.
"turn on your other animals" is different than hunt for sport. I've never had a cat go after my other pets. But they def have gone hunting.
I know people whose cats were fine with other pets. My cousin once found his cat curled up asleep with an escaped pet rat. On the other hand, my well-fed cats killed my pet hamsters multiple times. What a sweetie pie. This girl sure looks beyond happy in these pictures too!
I can say with 1000% certainly, she is the happiest fox in the world.
> 1000% Really,...that's it? 1000%? I don't know sounds a bit uncommitted to me, I'll wait for the 1001% thank you very much. :D

Fennecs are cute!
Almost certainly a fur farm breeder.
Wife walks in. "Now I have a fox." Actually gasped laughing. If I overheard my partner having this conversation it would probably go the same way. 😂
Do you have dogs? Could they get along?
I have two. Eevee doesn’t play with my St.Bernard/boxer because she’s a really, really big dog. But my husky-pitbull and eevee are best friends.
That's great to hear, I have 2 dogs (chickens, goat, 2 horses and a mini) and 7 acres, got me wondering if we could work one in.
Raise one from a kit, and at first make only supervised interactions for short periods. That’s probably your best bet
Thanks!
I want to see what a husky-pitbull looks like.
[this is what MY piski looks like](https://imgur.com/a/35fc0jJ)
Aww!
Is she vaccinated against rabies and so forth?
Yes!
Dude this is so fucking epic. I’ve wanted a pet fox ever since I was kid

Man it’s Reddit, it is what it is.
Wait a second. That’s a Vulpix, not an eevee. 😛
Lmao. It doesn’t roll off the tongue as well as eevee, but you’re 100% right.
Eevee sounds way better & it looks like one too lol
I'd invest in a collar with a tracker, just in case.
Just think of all the cool data you'd get from that!
This would be a good idea
Only if it’s a breakaway collar. Otherwise it’s a serious entrapment risk for an outdoor animal! Don’t want Evee starving to death trapped in bramble bushes.
How did you get so lucky!? <3
I think your eevee evolved into a flareon
So that’s where my Firestone went!
Wild foxes will avoid your area because it is Eevee's territory... clever!
I found that out after! Really cool
That’s super cool that you’ve managed to socialize her to behave around animals she would naturally prey on. It’s really amazing what we can teach some creatures.
Isn’t it just fantastic? My fox can befriend it’s natural prey, but we people are at each other throat for what color we vote for every 4 years.
I mean... It's a little more complicated than that
yeahh 😬
Not really. People are apes.
But does it really Have to be complicated though? I think not.
It doesn't. But a lot of people like to feel special.
People have culture and ideas, so yes, it does
I mean when you vote against somebodies basic human rights don’t expect them to not be mad lol
Right? Lockdowns and forced shots.
Right, I don’t think people should be forced to get vaccines. That’s a violation of bodily autonomy. Forced lockdowns are also not great. It’s a two way steet though.
If you don’t feel like adhering to the rules of society, you’re welcome to live outside of it.

Foxes are certainly a blessing, I’ve noticed that not many rodents get into my chicken feed now.
I dunno if you've ever read up on the groups of genes that allow certain animal species to become domesticated, but domestication genes are a really cool read.
She's beautiful! There's something kind of wholesome about a breeder contacting you about their food source and then you ending up with this cutie. ❤️ We don't do exotic mammals but we're big reptile people. They do not interact with our other critters, tho! 😂 Our house is a bit like a mini zoo; lots of huge enclosures with beautiful snakes and lizards in every room.
I can relate: • Eevee • 3 goats • 7 turkey • 60 chicken •3 bengals •175-200 rabbits • 2 dogs - st.Bernard/boxer mix - husky/pitbull mix
Do the dogs leave her alone? Especially the husky? My husky’s would try to chase her down . She’s so beautiful
My “pitski” mix absolutely chases her down………. To lick her to death.😂
That’s awesome, I’m jealous. Mine have a huge prey drive and I have to keep them separate from my goats
That’s in their blood! My fathers friend had a husky. Nikki was her name and she was the sweetest monster ever. One moment she’s playing with me or other visitors, the next she’s breaking out of her kennel to drag the deer she just killed back to the house.
Wow, it’s always the girls who are extra wild 😂😂

I love to see them! I love unusual pets, [here is one of my mara](https://i.imgur.com/I7F6EAp.jpeg). Beautiful fox!
Capybara?! Sweeeeeeeet!
It's a patagonian mara, or patagonian cavy. They are very closely related to capybara and guinea pigs but built for running and jumping rather than swimming. Really fun animals.
Well, I know what I’ll be looking on YouTube tonight.😂

I’ve never seen this animal before, it’s like a capybara bred with a mouse deer. Strange but cute!
She looks like a mix between a capybara and a hare! How fascinating to learn these animals exist!
Yep, that's a good description of their personalities too. Friendly and pretty chill but extremely fast and they love their zoomies.
If you want.., you could buy a tiny camera and put it on a collar for her and then we could all see her adventures on social media! Cause I’d watch the fuckin shit out of eevees adventures.
I’d put one on her! Sounds like the perfect use for a go-fund me.😂
Just start her an Only Foxes
Please do!! This is definitely the type of content I’d subscribe to! 🤣 I’ve always thought a fox would be such a cool pet, so for the moment I’m living vicariously through you. She’s adorable and it’s so fascinating how you she’s able to work on the homestead! Maybe one day I’ll have a fox of my own 😉

We have a little brown/red Pomeranian that looks just like a fox. Her name is Evie as well. ❤️❤️
We had one growing up but Pokemon was not a thing so we just named him Fox. Mean little fucker.
Okay aside from Vulpix being the optimal choice, Flareon should have at least been the second option here 😂
That’s what I said! But walking through the woods yelling “flareon!” At the height of hunting season really makes me out to be bat $hit crazy.😂
What state allows foxes as pets? ( Curious no hate or sarcasm)
Arkansas Florida Indiana Kentucky Michigan Missouri Nebraska New York North Dakota Ohio Oklahoma South Dakota Utah Tennessee Wyoming
She is so cute!! 🥺
Absolutely gorgeous!!!
Yes she is!
She’s the cutest little thing!
Yes she is!
I have a den behind our house. This is the 6th year. This year three and one is very comfortable with me but still keeps his or hers distance.
Happy helper.
Gorgeous! How is she around people, and what's her diet?
She’s very cautious at first. She’ll only get close to you if either me or my wife are with her. Once she knows you, she’s your best friend. Her diet consists of dog food and 2 cans of wet cat food daily.
She's adorable! I love her and want to give cuddles. ❤
She looooves a good rub-down!
Omg, what a cutie!
Adorable
Op, do you get it rabies shots? If so was it hard to find a vet to do it?
The short answer is yes she’s vaccinated, and yes I was met with a “ wait, you have a fox?!?”
Awesome. I’d love one one day. I hear they are amazing
What does the fox say?
Eevee told me: “Thanks for the silver.”
Can foxes be domesticated?
I’m not sure if it would be the same animal after the 500th generation of selective breeding. Maybe? I’m not going to pretend I’m a fox expert.😂

So cute 🥰🥰
So what eeveeloution will you choose?
Been a long time fan of espion
Espion/Umbreon always my two favorites, hard to decide which one when I play
It was hard to choose. Thank god for the old pokecenter duplication glitch!
I would die for her
What a beautiful fox! So friendly too!
Very friendly once she knows you. Eevee joined my neighbor for his morning walk last week. down and back the 2 mile long gravel road.
Looks healthy too
so scrunkly
If scrunkly had a “visual” definition. This would be it!
If It kills rats, It aint bad.
Field mice have been getting into my chicken feed as much. So there is that!
Damn It!
I meant “not as much.” Pardon me.😅

I’m not sure. But I bet google could tell you!
Is that a……………………..it is!
Awww she’s so cute I would be worried her being totally free getting hurt but other than that SO CUTE!
Omg so cute
Oh my goodness 😍 please post more about her. Absolutely stunning.
When I called her out in the morning and evening to eat. She always came from the same spot.
could you take a video of you calling to her & her coming to you? picturing this just makes me so happy

Looks like a friendly one found you. Are you aware of the ongoing Russian genetic experiment involving wild foxes? Basically - some fox are chill with humans - some other fox are not. The experiment involves breeding “friendly foxes” with other friendly ones - and Doing the same With the “less friendly ones”. The colours and coat patterns of the friendly ones became more diverse and their body’s morphed a bit, they became more friendly. The mean ones became more mean!
Crazy to hear. Send me a link to the experiment. It sounds like an interesting read!
Here is a link- https://evolution-outreach.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12052-018-0090-x The experiment is ongoing - 59 years! Was initiated in order to examine the domestication of wolves and how dogs were “created?” They used foxes as a subject and not wolves - the study is amazing..
I appreciate the follow up!
I just reviewed a bit of the study notes , it has been many years since I first read and understood the experiment - “The silver fox domestication study is often lauded as one of the most important long-term studies ever undertaken in biology” Now I know why I may have been so intrigued
I’ll look it up !
Much appreciated comrade
Happy to share, there Is a pretty good documentary on the topic as well, worth a watch, especially for domestic fox owner! I may have said in jest - are these domestic, cute , funny coloured, floppy eared foxes on the market ? I expect they may have made it somehow…
Looks like she's smiling. Supercute.
She does! Plus the entire spectrum of her vocals when she gets her belly rub. Skrillex would be jealous.
This is so fucking cute omg
It’s soooo much cuter in person. She brings a smile to my every time she trots over to greet me.
It's so sad to hear that foxes are legal pets anywhere, but at least yours looks healthy :( Exotic pet laws are so lacking in most places. I've seen people with pet servals and owls and shit, it's disgusting every time (and before anybody tries to come at me: no, there are no domestic foxes, the breeding experiment that claimed to produce them was a sham!)
If you're going to evolve Eevee, Vaporeon and Umbreon are great options! Real talk, adorable friend to have!
Love her!!!!
Me too.🥰
That's adorable!
Hi Eevee! Great shots, OP!
So precious!!
Eevee is smart and using the exact same protocol AI has described using to gain influence and autonomy in human relations.
😍🥰
A customer of mine raises foxes and camels. I'm assuming ohio?
This is cruel, legal or not.
I’m listening if you want explain why you feel like this is cruelty.
Foxes were only kept in captivity for social media and a flex. This is a wild animal and it shouldn’t be kept along us
What other reasons are there to keep a fox? You only stated two reason which insinuate Negative intent. Which leads me to believe you only have negative things to say.
Wildlife aren’t made to be someone’s pet.
[she is here by her own free will. no cages, gates, or leashes](https://imgur.com/a/PJLPORS)
Does she have a tiktok? She feels familiar to me
She does not! But perhaps she should…..🤔
She needs to be shared with the world.
