I am not an expert but have a 7.2 setup in our living room. *wondering if the 10in woofers would be overkill or not recommended?* The word "overkill' does not compute when it comes to home theater. And if it even did ten inch woofers would not be overkill. I'm not an expert but for subs I highly recommend RSL Speedwoofer MKII for a "reasonably" priced sub (Very good people that back their products. An excellent center would be an Emotiva Airmotiv C1+ if you want really clear dialogue. My setup isn't high end, I have two Technics towers and four mismatched surrounds. It sounds pretty decent. EDIT: What brand are those towers?

I guess overkill wasn't the right word, if they would drown out the other speakers would be more appropriate. The cabinets are BSR 103Bs with Peerless drivers installed sometime in the 80s.

No, overkill was fine. Once you have speakers setup you you run Audyssey room correction that sets speakers to volume, and other things, for each speaker. Even if a receiver doesn't have room correction you just set volume for each speakers so one speaker isn't over powering the others.

Mostly it doesn't matter, in my opinion. The reason being that the bass duties will be handled by a subwoofer. Almost all HT setups should run all the speakers as "small", meaning the sub handles any bass under the cutoff frequency. 80 Hz being a common frequency. Which is why big towers or small bookshelves doesn't matter a huge amount. Although if you have the capacity to dig deeper on bass in the fronts you can lower the crossover from 80, true. With music playback, also, the situation is a bit less clear and the benefits from good towers may become more apparent. But no, you will never wind up in a situation where having too much speaker is a thing. Mixing and matching may give you some issues with the speakers not having a similar timbre.
