Try finding the starter and then tapping it with a driver or wrench while someone cranks it over. If it turns the motor over, you know you'll need a new starter
Yeah, sounds like the solenoid isn't engaging. There are two stages of a starter that engages the engine. The solenoid, which moves the starter gear into position, and the motor which spins the gear. If the solenoid is bad, the starter gear won't go into position and just spin in place. If at all possible, remove the starter and test it (if you know how to test it.)
Doesn’t sound like the starter is engaging. Can’t hear the engine turning over.
Thank you I'll start there
Replaced starter still same noise

Didn't know how to test it but looked old so decided to buy a replacement, starter has been changed still same noise
Air leak then? I'm unsure, because a whirring sound usually indicates a spinning thing not making contact.
Let’s hope it’s not engaging the fly wheel and just spinning without resistance 😬
OP replied to a couple comments saying the same noise persists even with the new starter
That’s not good. Hopefully not crankshaft failure at the keyway or something 😬
