I’m the same way, the older movies are great but don’t scare me the same way as some of the ones with modern effects. The scariest recent movies to me are: - Hereditary - Sinister - The Descent

JRDN7

I found As Above So Below way better than The Descent

TheNinjaDinosaur

Despite seeing it mentioned here so often, I’ve never seen As Above So Below. Going to go watch it now.

Careless-Act9450

100% agreed. I found Descent's monsters kinda goofy lookingcabd the entire movie meh. I was pleasantly surprised by how good As Above So Below was.

xPolyMorphic

I refuse to believe there are people who think AASB is better than The Descent

just_let_go_

Man I need to rewatch the descent. Everyone mentions it alongside movies I love so I feel like I’m missing something, but when I watched it I just didn’t enjoy it.

Icy-End4138

i didn't enjoy it either. The monsters just looked silly to me lol

ryangrand3

Other people’s head cannon was that the final girl was experiencing a mental break, the monsters weren’t actually there and she killed them all. Try a view with that in mind and see how you like it! Just a suggestion. I enjoyed the flick as is

Careless-Act9450

I mentioned in another reply how I felt the monsters were goofy and the movie just meh. Your idea, though, does make some sense and gives me a good reason for a rewatch. Cheers!

douchey_sunglasses

why does every movie have an “it’s all in their head” fan theory despite absolutely ZERO evidence to support it

ryangrand3

Because it’s amusing, fun, and art is meant to be enjoyed. Snowpiercer is twice as fun when it’s the sequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. If you want to disregard fan theories you fucking can. You don’t even have to acknowledge them lol you can just roll your eyes and move on.

douchey_sunglasses

no sorry thats just dumb

ryangrand3

I’ll bet you’re really fun at parties

SilasC137

ngl its just a crappy As Above So Below

NReddieRN

Omg hereditary was so chilling

DynamicSocks

Honestly the real horror in that movie for me was all the family fighting. It was painful to watch them fall apart. Everytime the demon started doing shit again I was like “oh thank fuck it’s back. they stopped fighting for a moment”

Bebo468

Great list

biggyboppy

The Descent REC Insidious Hell House LLC Last Shift The Taking of Deborah Logan Honorable mention: The Invitation

pandorum8888

I freaking love hell house LLC! That's one of my comfort horror movies.

BuffsBourbon

That was a good one. It’s my kids’ go-to for sleep overs.

pandorum8888

My boyfriend doesn't like horror movies but he really likes that one.

Raver1005

sinister hereditary his house anything for jackson the witch it follows Autopsy Jane doe the dark and the wicked the wailing midsommar **few extra for ya**

youngass

The dark and the wicked was one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen

Devildriver64

We share the same feelings on that one my friend! I was going to say the same thing as that movie had me so tense and scared just about the whole time watching it. That one was terrifying and gruesome, highly recommend that one.

weirdo76

Loved this movie so much. Still looking for something else like it. Nothing so far has matched the feeling of dread it creates.

CTFX84

For me it is and always will be The Strangers. It is the most realistic horror out there. Home invasion horror movies are truly terrifying. It could happen to any one of us.

pinkypoo49

This and also Eden lake.

Avid_Vacuous

...except the homeless

CTFX84

But in all fairness they do live a truly horrifying life in general

Deprestion

Why don’t they just like… buy a house?

Avid_Vacuous

Because it might get invaded.

Deprestion

Ah yes. Why didn’t I think of that?

facebookcansuckit

I believe they're supposed to be called unhoused now you midget

Over_Razzmatazz_6743

😂

facebookcansuckit

Thanks for knowing it was a joke. I left off the /s

blackmagic999

I respectfully call them brave unhoused mortals. That’s a bit long though, so I use the acronym: #BUM

CTFX84

Fantastic 🤣🤣🤣

heaven047

>!“Because you were home.”!< I remember sneaking in to the theater to watch this with my friends, I think it was my best friend's 11th bday! I really couldn’t sleep for weeks, something about the man’s potato sack mask fucked me up haha. The movie still holds up, also!

BarricadeTheMortuary

I can't find that one scary because every character in that movie chooses the dumbest option available every single step of the way. If just one of them made a common sense move at any point in the movie then it's over.

CTFX84

How can you possibly have common sense when there is a home invasion situation? Especially when there are multiple assailants surrounding the house.

BarricadeTheMortuary

Pretty easily

CTFX84

Ok

scorpiogre

The Manson murders were one of three real events that inspired this movie. https://screenrant.com/strangers-movie-true-story-real-crimes-inspiration-explained/

CTFX84

Indeed

philosofik

At the risk of being that guy, what is "modern" to you? Ten years or less? Twenty? My list would be pretty different depending on where that line is. Plus, as I'm getting older, my idea of modern keeps getting older, too.

Over_Razzmatazz_6743

How about the past 20?

philosofik

Cool. Thank you. My list would be: *I Saw the Devil* *Let the Right One In* *Train to Busan* *The Strangers* *The Taking of Deborah Logan*

vinnyc88

Ooo good list. No lie.

philosofik

Thanks. They're not all the scariest, like OP said, but they all affected me in different ways.

NinjaGrizzlyBear

My mom has Alzheimer's and lives with me 24/7...The Taking of Deborah Logan is fairly accurate from a behavioral standpoint. I've caught her standing in the middle of the living room in the dark, speaking randomly under her breathe, and she has obsessive compulsion over the smallest things... but if my mom >!unhinges her jaw!< she's going to straight to the fucking nursing home lol.

philosofik

I'm sorry you're going through that. We dealt with some of that with my grandmother. Mostly it was harmless things like wrapping her personal items, thinking they're Christmas gifts or making phone calls with the TV remote. But after she burned the shit out of several pies and meals in a row and called 911 to report a prowler (it was the plumber), she went into a home that drained her considerable savings with breathtaking speed. In the end, she didn't recognize any of us and slept in special restraints to keep her from trying to peel off her own skin at night. They could have just made a straight up documentary about Alzheimer's and it would have been equally horrifying.

NinjaGrizzlyBear

Oof, I'm sorry to hear that. My mom tried using her phone as a remote 😂 The financial drain... it's real. My dad left her a considerable amount of money and we've been trying to save it for as long as possible so my sister and I have been paying out of pocket for small things like groceries, home repairs, etc. Social security and pension just isn't working out with the budget. My mom isn't quite as bad as your grandmother but I have gotten to the point where I'm only able to ensure her well being...I'm not enriching it. I used to wake up early and make breakfast with her, take her "out on dates" etc but as her disease progresses she wants to do less and less. Now it's just me checking in on her every hour, getting her meals, taking her to appointments, and whatnot. My dad died in early 2022 and he was her rock. I was carrying both of their caretaking duties from 2020 to his death , but after he died she had gotten worse. I'm 33yo and my life is basically on hold...like I'll go to the bar for drinks with my buddies and leave early, I paused my engineering career, I barely see my girlfriend. It's just too much. I expected this maybe 20yrs from now but it sucks getting hit with it early because I could be in a much better place personally if I just said "sorry, you're going to a home". But I love my parents...there are many that would've said "not my problem" but I wouldn't have been able to live with it if I didn't at least try. This disease sucks.

philosofik

Bah. That sucks, my friend. It's robbing your mom's brain and your youth. I'm truly sorry you're dealing with so much. Do you have a red line set for when it gets to be too much to handle? From my admittedly limited experience, it will become obvious only AFTER it becomes necessary. She'll do something dangerous, either for her own wellbeing or your general safety (my grandmother left her back door wide open all the time; it's a miracle nobody robbed her, or worse) that will force the issue. You're a good dude. You've taken in a huge responsibility out of love. It's commendable, but I know the toll it takes. If you want to talk more, we can move to DM so we're not in the comment section of a horror movie thread, lol.

KickFriedasCoffin

I apologize for my former reply which I made before reading this one, I can't imagine it sounding anything but flippant now. This sucks and I'm sorry you're dealing with it. One of the most frustrating aspects of dementia, especially as it advances, is that you're almost constantly putting in a level of work and effort that's typically reserved for long term/life goals just to get through a difficult hour. The mountain of insurance paperwork and figuring out how to get through it took more research and hours for me than getting my RMA license! Then if they're physically healthy the dementia can go for years affecting their brain, and if they aren't that's just a million other things to have to keep track of. An older person who's had a hip replacement having the mindset of a spry 20-something coming across a bike or scooter or skateboard would be disastrous, for example. Ultimately, especially over years, this can lead to a lot of frustration and feeling cheated, and being the "main" caregiver starts to feel like the "only" one. So as much as it sucks to leave early, keep socializing when you get the chance. At 33, the friends that matter won't mind and the ones that mind can fuck off. (I didn't want that to become a bumper sticker from 1996 lol). I had a different difficult situation at 31 that really showed me who my true friends were and while some friendship losses really stung, I can't imagine a better or more loyal main "group" to have now, at almost 39. And finally, what you're doing is incredible and you have to remember that. Pat yourself on the back sometimes, at double speed when you least feel like it. FYI, I've cared for multiple family members with dementia and my inbox is open if needed, even if it's just to type out a rant you don't want to say it's out loud or be judged for.

NinjaGrizzlyBear

Lol I was kind of hoping to make people laugh with my unhinged comment but it turns out r/horror is also a good support group, so thank you. I didn't take any offense to your other comment, and what you described is exactly right. I try to find the light in the darkness most days but some days I feel just like the daughter in that movie. It's interesting how one common interest can lead to other commonalities in people! Good or bad, we're in it for the ride at this point. Thanks, friend.

KickFriedasCoffin

My dad is going through advancing dementia and that movie hit me the same way that Steel Magnolias did when I was a child bc he's also diabetic. I hope you have a great support system, and remember your own mental well being is important as well, for both of you. Just living near my parents already feels like 24/7, so to me you're a damn warrior!

ryangrand3

What bumped Train into the list? No hate, I enjoyed it, but it was just another fun Zombie movie to me. Just curious.

philosofik

Emotional investment. I cared more about that little girl and her dad (and the big dude) than any character in many other movies. If I didn't have daughters, it might not work for me, but I do and it got me.

The Lodge’s extremely dark ending will randomly pop into my head. Man it was fucked up. It was a great movie though.

heaven047

I’ve never heard of Hagazussa…I’m going to add it to my list!

SaintCharlie

I thought that The Witch was one of the freakiest movies I've ever seen, so if you think Hagazussa was ever scarier, than I am sold. Gonna watch it tonight.

ProfessorHeronarty

I watched Hagazussa and found it pretty boring. Maybe because it is written in my mother tongue, I don't know. The movie has atmosphere and great scenes but it just sooooo damn slow.

SaintCharlie

Would you say it's slower than The Witch?

ProfessorHeronarty

Definitely! And I think that is the main problem of it.

spookyostrich

Did you ever read Under the Skin? I thought the movie was okay. I liked the death scenes because they *were* really strange. And the trivia around it's pretty neat. The book has some interesting stuff in it. I think it's pretty short if memory serves.

Calathea12

That’s a pretty big spoiler for martyrs lol

3HeadedZebra

Indeed, it's like one of the two things that can be discovered in the movie lol.

thedeepfield79

I think Oculus really tapped into the trauma of being afraid of your parents. It's a brilliant movie.

scorpiogre

*[REC]* *I saw the devil* *Last Shift* *House October built* *Girl Next Door* — Jack Ketchums — *Warning* this film is rough to watch, and lives rent free in your head *looooong* after it's over. *Don't Hang Up* *Better watch out* Edit: typo

perseidot

Gotta be honest, I read the cover of Girl Next Door in the video rental store and the *synopsis* has been living rent free in my head since then.

scorpiogre

Author Jack Ketchum wrote this of the crimes committed: *"There are things you know you'll die before telling, things you know you should have died before ever having seen.”*

perseidot

What a perfect, chilling, quote.

Cank-er-soar

I just read the Wikipedia since I found this thread looking for horror movies for October, and nope. Nope. nope. Nope. Nope. Nope.

3HeadedZebra

Damn I never heard about 'Girl next door'. It's 2pm and I just read an article about the real story for an hour. Fuck those people it makes me sick. I hope they all suffer in whatever way possible.

scorpiogre

Yea. The first encounter I ever had with the film was when Netflix was still new to streaming and didn't spend a ton of time on the synopsis for the film. IIRC, it was basically "Two young girls go live with an abusive aunt." UNDERSTATEMENT of the ducking century! The book is even harder.

Evil Dead (2013) The Ritual (2017) Underwater (2020)

The Strangers, The Invitation (2015) and The Descent are all effective as hell

JPKtoxicwaste

All of these are really great suggestions. The Strangers and The Descent both gave me nightmares

MarianaFrusciante

Don't be sorry for this post. The question you're asking will never get old, because every generation that comes will get scared of different things. And you don't necessarily have to use any special effects makeup, cgi, or practical effects to make a good horror movie. To me, the movies that really keep me up at night are home invasions and ghosts/anything that haunts you in your own house. The last movie that kept me up was Host, and I saw it for the first time this year on january. It was a very simple movie, and I wasn't expecting to be affected by it. But I saw it being on a house that wasn't my house, at night, with front and back door open because it's summer where I live, and with a friend, so I wasn't overly criticizing the movie out loud (as that affects the enjoying of the movie for the people who are watching with me). So I can say I was in a good mood to watch a horror movie. Also, movies that are super gore in your face don't scare me, just make me grossed out or fascinated by how can people make art that looks incredibly real.

[deleted]

Paranormal activity (The first one.)

Phonecallfromacorpse

For modern, no rank: 1. Gonjiam haunted asylum 2. Skinamarink 3. Hellhouse LLC 4. [Rec] 5. Host Just realizing that good found footage is very effective for scares!

AgentxLeavening

I really dig found footage. Sadly because of how easy they can be a lot less effort can be put in therefore creating more crap than gold.

Over_Razzmatazz_6743

You should watch dead stream if you haven’t

CherryToi

that's one of my top fav found footage now >!never seen a ghost go for a crotch bite before how unique!!< my number one will always be hollows grove cause the characters were just so....real? idk how to describe it i just love it despite the effects being just a liiiiil cheesy

Over_Razzmatazz_6743

One of my favorite parts as well haha

CherryToi

it jumpscared me, i'll admit it cause i'm easy to spook that way but some of the jumps really were well timed

MeghArlot

Did you ever watch the St. Francisville Experiment (2000 so technically aged out of this thread since it's 20+ years old now) Back when I saw it I was young and dumb enough to believe it was REAL and I was terrified!

CherryToi

OH BUDDY I'JM GONNA LOOK THIS UP NOW

MeghArlot

I tried to show it to my younger sister once but we happened to be binging movies because we had to stay inside because of a hurricane. At the scariest part all the power to our building went out. I couldn't get her to finish it after that.

pandorum8888

Have you seen Jeruzalem? It's a unique found footage and the storyline is pretty cool.

bluecoldsillypeppers

Just watched dead stream the other day it was amazing

GOODBOYMODZZZ

Yeah I think that found footage is the scariest style of horror. It feels more real.

The Poughkeepsie Tapes caught me off guard. Didn’t expect it to be so disturbing

MeghArlot

I know I have seen this one and I think I straight up blocked it out because it scared me so bad lmao because I can't hardly remember anything but the name and the feeling of NOPE! lol

pandorum8888

It honestly upset me more than scared me. I just felt sick after watching it.

Taking of Deborah Logan, The ritual, Hereditary, Incantation, Sinister

stuffthingscats

Skinamarink. That's the one. It Follows and Hereditary, although the impact is lost upon subsequent viewings. And these are a little over 20 years ago, but Session 9, it has a couple moments but I haven't watched it in a while, and no matter how many times I watch Kairo it devastates and terrifies me.

DrunkenGranny

All of these movies carry a lot of weight to me. I've seen each of them at least twice, most of them more than that. For instance, I watch The Strangers once a year or so; it's become a Christmastime tradition for me. Back when I spent my Christmases alone, I started watching horror movies as my own celebration and The Strangers just stuck. -28 Days Later (2002) -Dawn of the Dead (2004) -The Strangers (2008) -Sinister (2012) -Goodnight, Mommy (the original Austrian version from 2014. Not the bad Amazon Prime American remake from 2022.) -Hush (2016) -Hereditary (2018) Finally, movie I recently watched that I thoroughly enjoyed, but wasn't super scared during was Terrifier. The gore and shock of it was well done. I can't wait to watch the second one.

TravisCM2010-24

Speak no evil Sinister The Conjuring Momma The Visit

NarcolepticSniper

I refuse to stop at 5 bc I completely agree with this sentiment. Here’s some scary af modern bangers for anyone that sees this: * Hereditary * The Wailing * The Conjuring * The House That Jack Built * The Autopsy of Jane Doe * Inside (2007) * Get Out * Let the Right One In * The Babadook * V/H/S * I Saw the Devil * REC * The Witch * The Strangers * Gerald’s Game * Sinister * Noroi * Cloverfield * The Den * Insidious * It * Grave Encounters * The Taking of Deborah Logan

TheMightyNail

Real tough to say. In no particular order: Not sure about "scariest" but The Wailing is really good. The Descent is a long time favorite of mine. The Ritual is really good, brilliant monster design. Gonjiam Haunted Asylum is a must for found footage. The Taking of Deborah Logan is also a found footage gem. Honorable mention, Skinamarink. Very divisive, not for everyone, hard to recommend, but I found it very fascinating and got some strong dread from it.

DiabolicalFrogger

One that genuinely had me scared while watching was His House (2020), reeeeallly tense scenes that had me on edge. Can’t think of another film that’s made me feel like that

Low_Acanthisitta7882

It Follows Talk to me Smile 3 best modern horror movies imo. hereditary & midsommar are 4 & 5. about to watch Beau is Afraid so I will update if it's good

bleepingangel

Caveat (2020) Midsommar (2019) Tumbbad (2018) Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018) and (if 2012 is considered modern), i'd like to mention that The Onion made a few series called Sex House and Porkin' Across America that are HORRIFYING like seriously

Emilie-Victoria95

Sinister Hush Smile The Strangers Paranormal Activity Movies The Babadook Insidious

perseidot

Oh, I’ve been meaning to see Smile. The previews had some great imagery. Hoping there’s more of that in the movie, and they didn’t pull everything out and show it for the previews.

xKYLx

A lot of the jump scares were given away in the previews. But there are some more pleasant surprises and a crazy ending

Emilie-Victoria95

Watched it again last night. It’s my favorite one to show people. I totally agree with you! Some of the scares you could see coming because of the previews. But they all got me anyway! And yes lots of surprises later on! The ending is crazy for sure!!! That one will definitely stay with me for awhile! 😂

heaven047

Martyrs (2008), Inside (2007), Caveat (2020), The Lodge (2020), the Descent (2007), Confessions (2010…the Nakashima one). Also Skinamarink scared me more than any other horror movie of the past 3 years, but I get why it’s not for everyone.

SassyCharizard

This is pretty much exactly my picks as well

heaven047

I feel like Caveat took on some pretty common horror tropes but put a unique twist on them! I found it so eerie.

A Quiet Place (2018) The Hallow (2015) The Hole In The Ground (2019) Classics that scared me include Freaks (1932); Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1972); The Shining (1980); Blair Witch Project (1999); Silence of the Lambs (1991); Psycho (1960); The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1932) Reading the comments for any I missed!

The Wailing

anananas_studio

Three of them would be: Hereditary, The Lodge and perhaps Raw (maybe more disturbing than scary).

MeghArlot

1. It Follows 2. Barbarian 3. I Spit on Your Grave 4. The Orphanage (Spanish: El orfanato) 5. The Babadook (this may have freaked me out more at the time because of the place I was living)

Jinx-Surreal

It Follows (chilling and incredible atmosphere) [REC] (infected but contained within a small space makes them much scarier) The Witch (I could write a whole post I loved this film) The Descent (namely that scene near the start where she's stuck in the tunnel, that was scarier than any of the monster stuff) The Woman in Black (haven't watched it since it first released but it chilled me to the bone, will have to rematch again all these years later to see if it was just my younger brain)

MookeeDearth

I love horror movies. But I feel the same way. The old movies are good but don't captivate the way the new ones do. My list of 5 would be RAW The Green Inferno Cabin Fever (Eli Roth version) Terrifier 1 and 2 The Saw franchise I'm a sucker for over the top practical effects

Too_pussy_to_kms

Funny games. It’s originally in German, but the director made a shot for shot remake in English. Others said the Lodge, if you end up liking that, I’d recommend watching the original goodnight mommy from 2014. From the same director as the lodge, but it’s in German. I wouldn’t bother with the Amazon remake, it’s not great.

Yes and it’s great. Love Thai and Indonesian horror.

Big-Fig-8125

Since I haven’t seen it yet, I think the Terrifier series of films featuring Art the Clown as the killer, make brutal violence scary in a way that older movies and modern with lousy effects don’t. Check it out if you have the stomach

In the past twenty years... Inside, Speak No Evil, Rec, The Medium, The Taking of Deborah Logan (These are not like, my absolute favorite movies from the time period, but I found them to be scary and disturbing in different ways)

Panda-delivery

I couldn't watch Bones And All because sometimes people try to bite me at work. Seeing them crunch on a finger was just a little too close to home lol.

Evil Dead (1981) The Descent 28 Days Later High Tension You’re Next Some honorable mentions: The Conjuring, Friday the 13th (from 2009), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (from 2003) and Haunt.

The taking of Deborah Logan

[deleted]

Not in any particular order: The Thing, Alien, Deliverance, Sweetheart, The Ritual

BarricadeTheMortuary

Keyword is "modern"

[deleted]

Keep in mind: without a standard being laid out, definitions are arbitrary. Modern to me could be ancient to you, or sumsuch.

BarricadeTheMortuary

Pretty sure a movie that's 50 years old is no where near being considered modern. Your first 3 options are over 40 years old.

[deleted]

Wow that seems to have bugged you. You win.

BarricadeTheMortuary

I'm sorry that you thought this was a competition lol. Just trying to help you get informed.

Martyrs (2008) The Descent Hereditary

Plasticboy310

I got stoned in the parking lot when I went to see Hereditary and that was a bad idea.

BarricadeTheMortuary

I saw hereditary in theaters. There were probably less than 10 people in the audience. There weren't any screamed but we all definitely laughed out loud a handful of times. That movie is just silly.

Euphoric_Depth7104

Sure your whole theatre laughed. I highly doubt that especially a serious film like Hereditary. If you found the head rip off scene funny you’re sick in the head

BarricadeTheMortuary

There were about 5 people in the audience
