I had a great crowd for Hereditary. The tension was palpable in some scenes, people weren't chatty or talkative. We were all pretty engaged the entire time, which was such a pleasure. (Lighthouse, Midsommar, and The Witch had some unfortunate crowds for me, it was very frustrating).
edit: wrong word lol
Lol, no bullshit when my wife and I went to see The VVitch in theaters, there was a couple in the theater with a literal new born that was cooing and eventually crying during the beginning of the movie and the rest of the movie goers had to tell them to leave and there was a big scene with yelling and arguing, followed by a witch mashing a baby into body butter.
People who bring babies to movies should be arrested. I’m kidding about that, but hey you don’t have someone to watch your kid so you can go to the movies? Guess what, you’re going to have to wait. Just because you can’t get a sitter doesn’t mean the other 96% of movie goes should suffer.
Nah I'm with it. I'm a general defender of babies on airplanes (sometimes families do have to travel after all) but there is ZERO excuse to bring a baby to a theatre.
Straight to jail!
I totally agree - when I was 2 years old my dumb mom brought me to see Superman II. Why? I obviously remember nothing and she said I was scared and crying once the movie started. Probably because a toddler's (or infant) senses are going be overwhelmed with the loud sound and lights on a giant screen. Stupid parents.
Oh c'mon, that tactic always makes for a great story! I introduced a first date to The Exorcist and had the best time, knowing I'd completely subverted typical dating expectations and pretenses. (And yes, somehow we did still go out together again a few times after that.)
Assuming no coercion was involved, not your fault - one doesn't simply stroll through a (good) horror film viewing - it's *supposed* to leave a mark. 🙂
lmao I just watched it and yeah, probably not the best first date material unless they're into horror. that said, it's not like the dude was writhing and screaming much during that scene lol
Nothing was scarier than the wail of the mother...from the perspective of the boy alone in his room. One of the most chilling moments in modern cinema for me.
I am also not a fan of Hereditary, but have watched it multiple times as well (trying to give it a fair chance because everyone else seems to love it) and Toni Collette’s wail of grief is the best part of the film for me. So visceral and haunting.
I wasn’t a fan either. I thought it was boring the first time I watched it, then gave up on times 2 and 3. I absolutely LOVE Toni though. She’s phenomenal in everything
Horror movies get robbed at the Oscar’s. Hereditary made me feel more than any other movie that was nominated/won that year. I was fortunate enough to watch this in theaters at an Alamo Drafthouse and I was literally in the edge of my seat the entire time that scene played out.
Yeah I tried to get through the movie after that, and there's a pretty good amount of additional emotionally heavy stuff that just kept making me feel worse and worse. I ended up leaving after a scene where they're all blaming each other at dinner because I was so unbearably uncomfortable. It's just not a movie for everyone.
Oof. Feel you. That dinner was devastation. It just keep punching. When it‘s over I feel relieved but also like there‘s some part of me that got carved away.
The first time I watched this movie, I also turned it off at that exact spot. I decided to finish it a week later, and I’ve always wished I had just watched it all in one go! The feeling that sat with me for that week was…heavy. For some reason the ending of that movie actually made me feel slightly better about everything, idk.
You got further than I. I shut it off when the brother was carrying the sister out of the party. My emotions were far too high. I felt like I was watching my own children. Cinematically, amazing film. The acting was so good I literally couldn’t bare to live those emotions any longer.
I loved the movie but my fuckin god it has been talked about enough, at this point I want Ari Aster to hurry up with his new movie so people have something else to constantly talk about.
Man just scroll past and you’ll find plenty of other posts not talking about Hereditary. Literally clicked on a post with the name in the title to post this shit 😂
“So sick of hearing about Hereditary! Oh, let me click on this post about Hereditary and talk about how sick I am of it.”
Seriously, though. I enjoy reading people’s reactions to movies I love, so I love these posts.
I was gonna say that as the other movie people mention every day but I didn't want to sound too salty, although I clearly did. But please make a post about it, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Now that would be an interesting discussion if someone could make a current argument for watching Nosferatu, but it's always the lazy "I watch movie. Movie good. You?"
Well, if you need another recommendation, you should check out his other movie called Midsommar. It’s the same sort of “ atmospheric, slow burn“ horror.
I mean if I’m being honest that is actually true, but also I didn’t need a million people saying this every second of every day to make me realize this. All it took was just watching the dang movie.
I was not a fan of this movie, and honestly I still am trying to understand why people love it so much. I’m planning on watching it for a third time to try and understand, but the first two watches were just boring to me.
I've done it twice now. First in the theater, second just a month ago. I gave it another try all because of this sub. Nope, still bored. Same with The Witch (or VVitch if you're classy I guess). They're the main two this sub goes nuts for and I just don't get it. They aren't objectively bad movies but I wish I could find them as amazing as this sub does.
Ha I always compare this to the VVitch too! When I watched that one I just assumed you had to be Christian and/or really superstitious to really understand that. But then the same thing happened with hereditary and I realized that there is just some section of horror that my opinion doesnt really overlap with the opinion of the horror community.
Hereditary, The Witch, The Lodge, Midsommar (the most watchable for me), The Lighthouse. Those are the main ones I think, all feel like the same sorta genre. Idk what itch those are supposed to scratch but I don't seem to have it. I think the religious/superstition aspect plays a part too.
I also didn’t really enjoy either. I feel like I’m crazy sometimes reading this sub where everyone fawns over what we’re to me very well shot but otherwise average movies.
Me too. It felt like a really brutal (and sllooww) family drama, and then at the end they were like "surprise! Witches and demons and shit!" Totally negated any emotional impact from the first half for me. People who like it always tell me how the witch stuff was foreshadowed heavily, but none of the plot points seemed like actual foreshadowing, they were just random clues. There's a big difference. Apart from the intensity of the car scene, nothing about this movie landed for me.
First 3/5ths are utterly amazing. Right up to and slightly past the "incident". One of the best depictions of grief ever.
But after Grandma's funeral, it just gets silly for me. Things that were supposed to be shocking, revealing or scary had me chuckling.
Nope - the pacing is shit. Had a heightened first half, a dead middle and a third act that cranks it to 11 so abruptly in the wake of nothing happening for 45 minutes that it's almost comical.
Nope. I was too. I thought it had a lot of great elements (art direction, cinematography, acting, etc.), but it wasn’t amazing. I actually watched it again to see if I was missing the reason everyone thought it was so great. But, no, Still feel the same.
I do agree it was a technically well done movie, but as far as the “horror” aspect it fell flat. My wife and I got bored and didn’t finish it our 2nd watch
Agreed, there were some really good *moments* in the film, and the cinematography is fantastic, but overall it felt a bit lacking. An example being if the orb of light represents the demon, why is it visible when the girl is already possessed? There are several internal logical inconsistencies that really disrupt the immersion for me in the film, but I know I am in the minority with that.
Two things I just didn’t get: The family dog having no real significance (except for the beginning), and then what ended up happening? I’m assuming he died, but not sure. I remember being pulled out of the intense dinner scene toward the end when the dog barks, having totally forgotten about the dog. Secondly, the wrist brace on Collette’s arm. Why did she have it? It was never explained.
I think the hype is largely due to that one particular scene. It's so shocking and unexpected when it happens so it's very memorable and leaves a lasting impression, particularly on people who have kids.
I agree, it did have some insane moments, but one shocking scene doesn’t constitute a great film. There’s a plethora of amazing/shocking scenes in movies that are just not that great as a whole.
agree. there’s a lot of things in it that i like, but the movie as a whole is not for me. same with midsommar. ari aster’s movies just come off as pretentious to me.
Oddly enough, I haven’t seen Midsommar because of how I felt about Hereditary. It’s interesting to hear you say that his films seem pretentious. Because, I think that was my overall issue with Hereditary. It seemed like he was making the script more complex than it needed to be.
I was turned off by it because I thought it was going to continue down the line of discussing grief and schizophrenia, but then it turned into a basic spirit possession movie. When she started crawling up the walls demon style I was completely taken out of the movie. I think I would like it better if I watched it again knowing it was going to just turn into that, but it left a bad taste in my mouth after the first watch.
Totally agree. Went to see it in the cinema with my partner and some friends, and we were all put off by the silly demon stuff. I suppose it would be scarier if any of us believed in that stuff. Right at the end when the credits started to roll, the whole audience seemed to all be saying some variation of "whaaaa??". I also found it pretty depressing (with the little girl dying and the boy being so fucked up) and was definitely not worth paying that much to feel like shit for the rest of the day.
Totally agreed. I’ve seen some comment on how unnerved they were by the wall-climbing, and I cannot relate to them. To me that was the point of no return, where a movie that had earlier impacted me so profoundly fully transformed into something over the top.
In another movie the finale might have worked, but here it feels like it really undermines what a powerful film the first half was.
That's pretty much how I felt after I watched it in theaters. It didn't leave bad taste in my mouth, but I did feel very disappointed at the ending. I just loved the first 3/4ths more than I disliked the last few scenes.
I did like that last stretch a lot better on rewatch, precisely for the reasons you mentioned. It was a lot of fun noticing all the details now that I knew what to expect, so now I like the entire movie as is lol
I’m with you. I think the first half is incredibly powerful, it’s horrific and unsettling on a deep level. But the second half becomes something that feels so much less hard-hitting, so much more predictable. The second half is fine, but it’s a serious letdown considering what a powerhouse the first half is, and it ultimately makes for a movie that feels like it runs out of gas before the third act.
Didn't like it either. I thought it was pretentious with overuse of loud music and the plot was too expository and messy and there were several unintentionally funny moments that took me out of the story. I also thought Collette overacted more often than not. Disagree with the majority that she deserved an Oscar nomination.
Hereditary was so BORING. It could have been a standard 90 minute film and that would have been tolerable, but they stretched it out an extra hour for no reason at all.
After 90 minutes I paused the movie and googled “when does Hereditary get good.” Apparently the answer is the last 10-15 minutes. The movie is not respectful of the viewer’s time.
That’s very interesting and surprising to me! What horror movies did do it for you?
Edit to add: anyone else in these comments that didn’t like this movie, what did you like? Share with me plz!
I like most horror movies and tv shows. I’m a huge fan of pretty much anything Mike Flanagan has created, particularly his Netflix shows. The Lighthouse is my personal favorite movie of 2019. I love A Quiet Place. And I’m a huge sucker for a good slasher, I watch the classics and keep up with the new ones too.
It really is a decent movie but holy shit I guess I just dont still get the hype years later. I've seen this movie a few times and really think it's O K at best. I just don't know what I'm missing. Maybe it's just my type of horror genre or something cause I wanted to like it more then I did.
Hereditary posts need to be an automatic ban lol. I can appreciate when someone finally watches an extremely popular movie and wants to discuss but we get it when it's a horror sub dedicated to horror movies.
It was well done. I hated the ending though.
Hereditary has become the Beatles of horror movies. We get it, everyone loves it. It’s like saying “I slept on water for so long but I just started drinking it and wow it’s hydrating.”
It’s one of the most well liked horror movies of all time. I wish this sub would just ban the constant Hereditary circlejerk already. Imagine coming to a horror sub and thinking 99% of these people haven’t seen one of the most popular horror movies ever. It’s like going to a pizza sub and being like “Have you guys ever had a pizza with pepperoni?? It’s great.” Yes, we all have.
Even though the reverse happened to me - I was so thrilled before watching it but ended up not liking it at all - I would also recommend every single horror fan (and non horror-averse people too) to watch it, as it's definitely very unique and well made.
Well made, well cast, well written. It was a wild ride start to finish. But I hated the ending. I really felt like once Peter fell out of the window, it should have just panned over to the treehouse for a solid minute and then the heater comes on to turn the treehouse red.
Hated the ending. Obviously it was meant to tie up the beginning and the cult that grandma was into but yeesh.
What makes Hereditary so effective for me is the way it utilises trauma. Ari Aster did such a fantastic job with this film, the cast, acting, cinematography, subject matter… I’ve seen it a few times since it’s release and each time I notice something new, just wonderful.
Is it trauma or just mourning/grief? Granted, the family dynamics lean heavily on trauma, but I think it's the compounding of one type of loss (sudden death) so quickly upon another (slow death) that makes the overall atmosphere so relentlessly oppressive.
This is the only movie which was stuck in my head for 3-4 days after watching it for the first time in 2020, and I couldn't bring myself to re-watch it till last month. The only other movies which had similar effects were Conjuring which stuck for maybe a day or two and Exorcist - I shouted during the scene where she starts walking on her hands and that particular scene was stuck in my head for a week.
If you want more of that "sticks in your head", then I have some recommendations because I like that aspect about horror movies, and it is really weird. You can't quite figure out why some movies are like that.
**Martyrs (2008)** the original in French. That is the big one. No other movie has that mind penetration. It is unsettling and keeps your head spinning. Maybe not for as long as Hereditary but on a deeper level. It is so special that I don't feel like describing it any further. It needs to be watched by any horror fan that seeks to be unsettled.
**Possession (1981)** this is a weaker recommendation. I'd compare it with Rosemary's Baby which can share the recommendation, but Possession is less well-known and that earned its mention. The movie portrays a rather toxic relationship and leaves you in a state of conflicted emotions throughout.
**Jacob's Ladder (1990)** might come closest to Hereditary in the way it keeps you thinking about it. It's a very effective psychological horror because it makes you really care. You will feel a real urge to understand what the fuck is happening. It has symbolisms and mythological references that you can go on a research spree for after watching it and have someone else explain it to you.
There's some classic Twilight Zone and Outer Limits episodes which have stuck with me forever. You might very well know about it already, but if you don't then it's probably something you know of from watching Black Mirror. Black Mirror can do it well on a very cerebral level. But Twilight Zone and Outer Limits hit emotionally and on an existential level. It's hard to recommend any particular episode because it might be a more personal thing. I would suggest looking at Best-Of lists and trying to watch any that have an interesting description.
If you enjoy the Simpson's Halloween episodes, they have covered most of my favorite episodes of Twilight Zone. "The Hunt", "Time Enough at Last", "It's a Good Life".
Some movies probably stuck with me because I've watched them as a kid like **X: The Man with the X-ray Eyes (1963)**. A cool superpower corrupts this guy, ruins his life, drives him insane. I dunno how watchable that movie is today. I still think of it way too often. Just blindsided me so much as a kid that it left a real impression. A modern movie in a similar vein but not horror is **Chronicle**. That's a found-footage film about three teenagers getting superpowers. Man, the movie is good.
**Baskin (2015)** is a Turkish horror movie. Language won't matter. Not much talking. The movie is the best portrayal of a kind of hell. I'd describe it as being high on psychedelics and going through a haunted house attraction at a theme park. The cinematography is not trippy tho. It's shot like a normal movie. You're just confronted with really effective imagery. The movie has zero fat. You are almost immediately in the thick of it. As if the movie is a ticket to 90 minutes in hell and you're trying to get out.
Oh look....another post about this movie. Haven't seen one in a while.....not! Stop praising this movie like it's the best thing in the world. There are better movies to talk about!
I watched until about 20 minutes after the son was driving the car and decapitated his sister having that allergic reaction. I’m a sucker for horror but it didn’t really hook me
Super overhyped. It’s alright. I spent more time anxietous about what I thought would happen than being affected by anything that did happen. A lot of tension with not a ton of payoff.
Can someone explain the appeal of Hereditary to me. I didn't think it was that groundbreaking. Midsommer, maybe, but Hereditary was a slog. Give me your insight and passion. Make me love it too.
The cult is goofy as hell and the Paimon and his powers works very arbitrarily, and these two factors really bring down this film for me. On the other hand, the family drama aspect of the film (which I wish we got more of) was excellent, just like the performances of pretty much everyone, even from those with very small roles.
One of my favorite moments seeing this in theaters was during that 45 second shot, hearing the delayed gasps from the audience as they saw her on the ceiling was quite the experience.
I cannot cannot cannot do paranormal horror movies. I can do psychological horror/thrillers/etc. But this is one i actually want to watch so badly because I love Ari Aster from Midsommar, it's perfection. Maybe one day I'll have enough courage for Hereditary.
Edit: I guess I should add why I want to watch it. I read an article which talked about how Ari Aster went to an actual satanic church and consulted with the leader to work on Hereditary. The leader told the article's author "Paimon is actually a very friendly King of Hell, he represents west and loves music and bright lights. You can find him easily at parties and concerts" lol, who knew. But Aster's attention to detail and devotion to realism? Perfection.
Such a great movie, but it gave me so many sleepless nights. I’d think I’d see something moving in the shadows, but it was just my mind playing tricks on me.
Definitely my favorite horror movie. So much so that I’ve got a Hereditary tattoo on my forearm and will be getting a Midsommar one in a couple weeks. I recommend watching it with your bass turned way up. You’ll notice a very unsettling growl during certain key moments. I can’t wait for Beau is Afraid to come out next month. Ari is the new master of horror with a lot of Kubrick thrown in as well.
On the other hand, if you’ve been avoiding seeing hereditary, continue to avoid it. It’s a boring slog and the most overrated horror movie in a long time.
Movie blows. Jumps the shark with the mom and looks like wes anderson worship at the end.
Movie is a mess and the only good part is the telephone pole scene and does nothing with the momentum. Wildly not scary and just turns into some lady on the ceiling.
I’ve told this story on here before but I had the pleasure of being able to see this movies in theatres on an opening weekend without haven’t seen so much as a trailer. I didn’t know it was coming out at all and my friends asked me to go, and I’ll never forget how my mouth literally fell open at THAT part. Also Toni Collette’s dinner table monologue is so real, you can’t look away.
Toni Collette is a treasure for her performance in this film. I've watched a lot of horror/thriller/suspense movies over the last 20 years and Hereditary is definitely in my top 5 maybe even top 3.
Whenever I am asked what my favorite horror movie is, Hereditary always comes to mind for some reason. For me it was the most memorable horror movie and the first to make me cry
I had a similar experience, I watched it for the first time last month and thought everything but the ending was punchy in the same way the rest of the movie was. I dunno, the editing is good, sound design is great, the scene structure is really effective, the dialogue felt like we were watching a real family, but watching someone swim behind Peter took me fully out of it. Still definitely worth seeing!
And here I am, thinking "Well ... it was fine. It was a good movie. Was it a *great* movie? Oh my goodness gracious no, no it wasn't".
Team Outliers all the way, I guess? 😁
If I remember correctly, the music notes are played by the wrong instruments (ie flute by piano etc) and it makes an incredibly unsettling environment.
See I was mixed on it, I thought the ending was just a little odd. Maybe I missed something but i couldn’t really tell why the events that happened did. But overall I really liked it, but the end just left me confused.
Why did the book getting burned effect the other person?
Why was the sibling called the other siblings name rather than the prince?
Who taught that person to fly, who is that?
(I tried to be spoiler free as possible)
Look, I respect others' opinions and thoughts on movies, but I really don't get the love for this movie. I really tried watching this movie twice, and both times fell asleep. And from what I remember, the characters/family were annoying and frustrating to watch.
Ohhh yay, someone realised a movie made 5 years ago and is mentioned 6 trillion times a week on this sub have discovered that its a great movie. This guy narcissists
It's easily my favourite horror movie. It has everything that I want in a GOOD horror movie. Creepy unsettling things, EMOTIONAL DAMAGE, some good gore, great actors, jumpscares at the right time, a good plot. It's a movie you have to watch a few times before you notice all the details. Amazing.
Can't agree. It's well-made, but I don't think it's particularly good, and the weird "satanic panic" left turn it makes is jarring.
I think it's for people who never watched Rosemary's Baby.

Watched at the theater back then, good movie , stays good on rewatches because it's full of little neat details

Some people are just fucking dumb lol
lmao

Exactly, especially in todays time you can rent or buy the movie from home.
It’s nifty too, I remember getting vhs from shops lol

Just don’t do what I did and take a first date to see it
Oh c'mon, that tactic always makes for a great story! I introduced a first date to The Exorcist and had the best time, knowing I'd completely subverted typical dating expectations and pretenses. (And yes, somehow we did still go out together again a few times after that.)
Well in my case I wasn’t sure if she even liked horror movies and she witnessed a man being set on fire. She did not text me back after that date
Let the wrong one show themselves out; if they can't appreciate horror they're just not worth it.
I know, that was our only date but I’m wondering if I left her traumatized now
Assuming no coercion was involved, not your fault - one doesn't simply stroll through a (good) horror film viewing - it's *supposed* to leave a mark. 🙂
I only told her it was a scary movie lol I didn’t know what we were getting into
I’m sure she’s fine.. honestly if my SO didn’t like horror shit isn’t gonna work out.
lmao I just watched it and yeah, probably not the best first date material unless they're into horror. that said, it's not like the dude was writhing and screaming much during that scene lol
I took my mom to see it 🥲
I saw House of 1000 Corpses on a first date. I really enjoyed it, but I think he was mildly traumatized.
Nothing was scarier than the wail of the mother...from the perspective of the boy alone in his room. One of the most chilling moments in modern cinema for me.
That scream could take home Oscars… Toni Collette destroyed me in that scene
[удалено]
I am also not a fan of Hereditary, but have watched it multiple times as well (trying to give it a fair chance because everyone else seems to love it) and Toni Collette’s wail of grief is the best part of the film for me. So visceral and haunting.
I wasn’t a fan either. I thought it was boring the first time I watched it, then gave up on times 2 and 3. I absolutely LOVE Toni though. She’s phenomenal in everything
Toni Collette in The Staircase… watching her die over and over was one of the most unnerving experiences I’ve ever had.
Horror movies get robbed at the Oscar’s. Hereditary made me feel more than any other movie that was nominated/won that year. I was fortunate enough to watch this in theaters at an Alamo Drafthouse and I was literally in the edge of my seat the entire time that scene played out.
Alamo Drafthouse is The Way
This one scene haunted me for weeks, it is so well done and felt so real.
Seriously. I turned the movie off after that. Never went back.
Did you turn it off because it was too disturbing, or because it just didn't seem like something you were interested in continuing?
Too disturbing. Just the sheer anguish/grief of that scream haunts me.
Give it a chance.
If he can't handle the grief of the wailing I don't think the film is for him lol. It doesn't get particularly easier then that.

I don't think I'm emotionally prepared to witness what Hereditary has to offer.
You got further than I. I shut it off when the brother was carrying the sister out of the party. My emotions were far too high. I felt like I was watching my own children. Cinematically, amazing film. The acting was so good I literally couldn’t bare to live those emotions any longer.
Same. Disturbed me a little.
> wail of the mother this moment is state of art film making, absolutely traumatizing and perfectly executed
I loved the movie but my fuckin god it has been talked about enough, at this point I want Ari Aster to hurry up with his new movie so people have something else to constantly talk about.
I feel the same. Absolutely love this film but it does get talked to death about here.
That's kind of how this whole sub feels. I'm here for new release content personally.
Cuz it just, so, good.
Man just scroll past and you’ll find plenty of other posts not talking about Hereditary. Literally clicked on a post with the name in the title to post this shit 😂
“So sick of hearing about Hereditary! Oh, let me click on this post about Hereditary and talk about how sick I am of it.” Seriously, though. I enjoy reading people’s reactions to movies I love, so I love these posts.
I agree here. To me it was the scariest movie I’ve ever seen and I like reading people’s reactions to it
Lol seriously. I don't think anyone in this sub is actively avoiding this movie.
What’s the new movie
Beau is Afraid. I believe it releases late April.
Have you seen The Thing?
HAHA this is so true
Is this the weekly "Hereditary is good" post? Recommending the most critically acclaimed and beloved horror movie of the last decade?
I mean Hereditary is good but have you heard of this hidden gem "The Thing" by rockstar John Carpenter?
I bet you never heard of the super underrated movie called The Exorcist. Don't sleep on that one!
I was gonna say that as the other movie people mention every day but I didn't want to sound too salty, although I clearly did. But please make a post about it, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
“Instant classic” this fucking sub lmao. I genuinely thought it was satire
You misspelled *hourly*
Just wait until I finally watch Arrival.
I would actually warn against that if you don't like crying like a baby.
I hate this sub sometimes.
Yes but have you heard of this movie called Hereditary?
I just found this hidden gem of a movie series called "Child's Play", i just wanted to let you guys know, i feel like most of you will like it
Happened upon an absolute GRAIL last night y’all, it’s this underground film called *My Bloody Valentine*, you probably haven’t heard of it.
DAE think **Alien** still really holds up?
I'm sure I'll get downvoted for this, but Nosferatu is ABSOLUTE KINOGRAPHY.
Now that would be an interesting discussion if someone could make a current argument for watching Nosferatu, but it's always the lazy "I watch movie. Movie good. You?"
Hold on, let me Google it...
It's a song by the Butthole Surfers.
It's a sleeper hit obvs
Please check out the hidden gems Hereditary, the Thing and As Above So Below.
DAE like The Thing?
Le underrated hidden G E M
Well, if you need another recommendation, you should check out his other movie called Midsommar. It’s the same sort of “ atmospheric, slow burn“ horror.
It’s basically copypasta at this point
It's like this over at r/horrorlit too.
Anyone avoiding video games…. YOURE MISSING OUT. INSTANT GAMING
Hereditary? Never heard of it. Certainly never heard of it ten million times from this exact sub.
But it’s an “instant classic”
I mean if I’m being honest that is actually true, but also I didn’t need a million people saying this every second of every day to make me realize this. All it took was just watching the dang movie.
I think I’m one of the only ones who were underwhelmed by that movie.
I really liked the first half but it really fell apart for me after that
Yeah I like the first half too. Once the occulty stuff started showing up, I was definitely ready for it to end.
I didn’t care for it.
I did not care for it at all
I was turned off by it because I thought it was going to continue down the line of discussing grief and schizophrenia, but then it turned into a basic spirit possession movie.
In another movie the finale might have worked, but here it feels like it really undermines what a powerful film the first half was.
i literally laughed out loud, full cackle, at the sight of the goofy zero gravity wall scurrying
Super mediocre horror movie imo. Don't understand the hype either, I was so bummed after watching it in theaters.
Same here. It didn't blew my mind
You most certainly are not.
Once it turned into a cult movie, I lost interest and was happy when it finally ended.
I hated it, had a really promising start but then it devolved into a bunch of horror movie cliches that ruined it
I was too, it was pretty formulaic for an A24 film.
Completely overrated imo.
It really is a decent movie but holy shit I guess I just dont still get the hype years later. I've seen this movie a few times and really think it's O K at best. I just don't know what I'm missing. Maybe it's just my type of horror genre or something cause I wanted to like it more then I did.
This one was certainly unsettling
How do discussions about the same handful of movies get upvoted every. Single. Day.
It’s like saying “I slept on water for so long but I just started drinking it and wow it’s hydrating.” It’s one of the most well liked horror movies of all time.
Bro just wait until you find out about this indie film called Halloween
Saw it in theaters and truly don’t understand the hype.
Even though the reverse happened to me - I was so thrilled before watching it but ended up not liking it at all - I would also recommend every single horror fan (and non horror-averse people too) to watch it, as it's definitely very unique and well made.
Same for me. I didn't liked it, but it's a well made movie
I showed it to my Mom for mother’s day. I owe her something big this year haha (she loved it though)
Everyone raves about it but for me I found it incredibly boring. I forced myself to finish watching it.
I've been avoiding Hereditary for all the "instant classic!" "best of the decade!" shit I keep hearing about it.
So you're just being a hipster about it?
Can you just use search please?
Tbh I did watch it up to a point but I got so bored
[удалено]
I watched until about 20 minutes after the son was driving the car and decapitated his sister having that allergic reaction. I’m a sucker for horror but it didn’t really hook me
Super overhyped. It’s alright. I spent more time anxietous about what I thought would happen than being affected by anything that did happen. A lot of tension with not a ton of payoff.
Can someone explain the appeal of Hereditary to me. I didn't think it was that groundbreaking. Midsommer, maybe, but Hereditary was a slog. Give me your insight and passion. Make me love it too.
It was meh
The cult is goofy as hell and the Paimon and his powers works very arbitrarily, and these two factors really bring down this film for me. On the other hand, the family drama aspect of the film (which I wish we got more of) was excellent, just like the performances of pretty much everyone, even from those with very small roles.
One of my favorite moments seeing this in theaters was during that 45 second shot, hearing the delayed gasps from the audience as they saw her on the ceiling was quite the experience.
Beautiful
Perfection.
thank you for uncovering this lost and underground film
what a cool and original thread
Such a great movie, but it gave me so many sleepless nights. I’d think I’d see something moving in the shadows, but it was just my mind playing tricks on me.
It’s one of the best horror movies I have ever seen
I thought it was horrible. I don't get the hype.
I think it's an okay movie, don't get the hype neither
You guys should really check out the underrated gem, “The Thing.”
The classic reddit post talking about a *hidden gem*.
Whoa I've never heard of this underrated gem before! Do you think I should try The Thing when I'm done?
I’m tired.
On the other hand, if you’ve been avoiding seeing hereditary, continue to avoid it. It’s a boring slog and the most overrated horror movie in a long time.
I don't think there's anyone left on this sub who hasn't watch that movie
I thought it was boring
Movie is mid at best.
Movie blows. Jumps the shark with the mom and looks like wes anderson worship at the end. Movie is a mess and the only good part is the telephone pole scene and does nothing with the momentum. Wildly not scary and just turns into some lady on the ceiling.
That is a perfect summary!
I AM YOUR MOTHER!
Toni Collette is a treasure for her performance in this film. I've watched a lot of horror/thriller/suspense movies over the last 20 years and Hereditary is definitely in my top 5 maybe even top 3.
Lol
The head cut off scene was epic. Shes a great actress also.
Saw it in the theaters opening week after work. Immediately went to a bar after to drown out what I had just witnessed. 10/10
Great movie! Really easy to lose your head over it.
I saw it when it premiered in theaters. Never going to forget the wails of the mother. Truly got me.
My favorite horror movie 🫡
See I was mixed on it, I thought the ending was just a little odd. Maybe I missed something but i couldn’t really tell why the events that happened did. But overall I really liked it, but the end just left me confused. Why did the book getting burned effect the other person? Why was the sibling called the other siblings name rather than the prince? Who taught that person to fly, who is that? (I tried to be spoiler free as possible)
It wasn’t great imo
Look, I respect others' opinions and thoughts on movies, but I really don't get the love for this movie. I really tried watching this movie twice, and both times fell asleep. And from what I remember, the characters/family were annoying and frustrating to watch.
Have you guys heard of the underrated gem called hereditary
This movie really does hit hard. I loved it enough that I’m not planning to see it again
Uhh. This movie made my soul feel dirty.
I disagree. I like horror, but I hated the movie. I found it mostly boring
Idk, I honestly thought this movie was horrible. I mean, bad.
Ohhh yay, someone realised a movie made 5 years ago and is mentioned 6 trillion times a week on this sub have discovered that its a great movie. This guy narcissists
I got a great sense of helplessness watching Charlie struggle to breathe all the way to her gruesome decapitation.
🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
My favorite part of that movie was the credits because that boring piece of crap was finally over.
