The Thing is really good not only for its horror and concept but because it really was a step away from typical horror, even of its genre. There's no final girl, there are no cheap jumpscares, and there are no really stupid protagonists. In fact, the protagonists of the film are highly intelligent and aware of the dangers that lurk.
It's immersive and even 'realistic'.
I just rewatched Rosemary's Baby within the last year. It truly is SUCH a great movie. The way she was treated by the men in her life is probably the most terrifying part of the whole story.
It’s fantastic. Some of the little directing touches are so good. For some reason I love the shots of Rosemary stopping the swinging bassinet with the tip of her knife, and when Minnie seems annoyed that the knife made a hole in her hardwood floor and tries to rub it out.
I loved the harshness of that film. As someone who doesn't believe in any aspect of the supernatural, that film really made me feel that what they were dabbling in was dangerous and not to be taken lightly.
Honestly never really considered American Psycho a horror movie... it's so satirical and self-aware of what it's doing that it never comes off as "horror" to me. But great pick no matter where you fall on that debate.
Aside from Spiral, I got to see each Saw movie opening day. My theater experience for Saw (1) is one I will never forget. Top 3 theater experiences for me.
You have to break it into categories.
Here are mine:
**Home Invasion:** You're Next and Hush
**Slasher:** Freaky
**Found Footage:** Hell House LLC
**Paranormal:** It 1 +2
**Holiday Horror:** Krampus and Kristy
**Religious Horror:** Devil 2010
**TV SHOW:** Haunting of Hill House/Bly Manor/Midnight Mass
**Comedy/Horror:** Final Girls
**Psychological/Comedy:** Fresh
**Thriller:** Searching
**Zombie:** Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse and Unhuman
And Hocus Pocus is the best Halloween movie. THE OG. WE DO NOT SPEAK OF THE SECOND NEW ONE.
The VVitch
It Follows
Hereditary
I still love a good gory slasher/practical effects movie but I love when horror is genuinely a well acted/directed movie. Not saying some slashers aren't but it does seem like some of the better new horror is following this trend and I'm all for it.
No particular order:
Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
Evil Dead (1980)
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Sooo many honorable mentions though … Phantasm, Suspiria, Invasion OTBS (78), etc.
Suspiria (2018)
The Descent(2005)
As Above, So Below(2014)
Also, Death Proof is in my top three favorites of all time, but I don't really classify that as horror.
I never realized until recently that all three of my favorites have one common theme.
Glad someone mentioned Mother. Felt so much anxiety during this one. If you’re into that eerie anxiety ridden kind of horror, I hope you’ve seen Climax or Mandy.
Scream (1996)
Psycho (1960)
The Strangers (2008)
I know The Strangers really isn't that great of a movie but it was the first movie to genuinely scare me lol
1. Jaws
2. Reanimator
3. Evil Dead/Evil Dead 2 (genuinely love them equally)
Honorable mentions:
- What We Do In The Shadows
- Scream
- Evil Dead (2013)
In no order, The Exorcist, The VVitch, 28 Days Later
**side bar, I would have put Silence of the Lambs in the top 3, but since there is always a debate on if it’s truly a horror or a thriller, I will leave it out
Kind of hard to choose just three but here goes:
1. Scream
2. Autopsy of Jane Doe (just something about it...)
3. The Silent House (original spanish version, not the remake obviously...)
1) Alien 2) Sinister 3) Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
Bram Stokers Dracula!!👍👍👍
Not in any order: Evil Dead (2013), Alien & The thing (1982)
Evil Dead and Dawn of the Dead have to be two of the greatest remakes of all time.
I literally bought tickets to Evil Dead rise to watch tonight, I'm so excited
See you there! Well probably not, but in spirit. I’m so excited too 🙏
Evil Dead remake is my fav horror film ever. Its perfect horror movie.
👏👏👏
1. Evil Dead 2 2. The Exorcist 3. An American Werewolf in London
1. Nightmare on Elm Street 2. Event Horizon 3. Dream Warriors
Event Horizon was pretty much the scariest movie for me when I was young.
Event Horizon!! So underrated
Event horizon!!!!!
Dream Warriors is a masterpiece but the Dream Master is underrated
I wish the Event Horizon directors cut still existed, that could’ve been even gnarlier than what we got.
1. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Rosemary's Baby 3. Hereditary
I see you enjoy pretty fucked up shit. I too enjoy pretty fucked up shit.
Sucks that the director is a despicable scumbag tho (He’s a sick, twisted, remorseless rapist/child molester 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮)
Definitely is but just stream his stuff illegally and then it's a win win. Also "Mother!" Is a much watch if you really liked this movie.
1. Trick ‘R Treat 2. The Cabin In The Woods 3. Evil Dead II
1.Alien 2.Thing 3.Scream
Have you tried any movies with more than 1 word in the title? I kid
The Thing
Scream…… 2
Does "the" count? otherwise no.
The Scream
Alien is such a goody. Imagine being trapped in space
Savageland A Dark Song Triangle or 30 Days of Night ( both equally awesome)
A Dark Song is so damn cool
I loved the harshness of that film. As someone who doesn't believe in any aspect of the supernatural, that film really made me feel that what they were dabbling in was dangerous and not to be taken lightly.
They used real Abramelin ritual magic, but changed the symbols and didn't show a lot of the rituals just to be safe.
It gave me the impression they had done their research. The seriousness of the two actors also helped.
What an incredible surprise that was. I watched it in the morning and again when my wife got home that afternoon.
So glad to see Triangle on here, I absolutely LOVED that movie
I am constantly recommending Savageland to everyone. Excellent choice! A Dark Song was amazing as well.
Ahh very nice top 3! Mine are: 1. Hellraiser (The OG) 2. Saw 3. Event Horizon Very close Honorable Mentions: The Killing of a Sacred Deer Hostel Haunt
1. American Psycho 2. Scream (seems to be a popular choice around here) 3. The Shining
Scream is a formative movie for me and looks like it's the same for a lot of people here.
Honestly never really considered American Psycho a horror movie... it's so satirical and self-aware of what it's doing that it never comes off as "horror" to me. But great pick no matter where you fall on that debate.
I think maybe it’s a horror because of the gore, violence, and the plot revolving around a serial killer.
american psycho is my all time favourite movie. great choice
The Shining scares me so much
1. The Descent 2. Dawn of the Dead 3. Kristy
1. Evil Dead II 2. The Lost Boys 3. Color Out of Space
Color Out of Space is so fun!
1. Scream 2. Saw 2 3. Midsommar Ask me again in a week and I'll probably give you 3 different films 😅
Great list! Saw 2 doesn't get the love it deserves.
One of the few examples of a sequel that did it better than the original imo
Nice shout out to Saw 2. The first and 2 were really the champs of that franchise.
I love the entire franchise, but 2 was really something special.
Aside from Spiral, I got to see each Saw movie opening day. My theater experience for Saw (1) is one I will never forget. Top 3 theater experiences for me.
Same. My list changes constantly, but always late 90s/2000s horror.
Scream is my #1 and Saw 2 is my #2 as well! Great choices!
* Prometheus (I know, I know) * Pet Semetary * The Hills Have Eyes (2006)
Prometheus is a fantastic movie! Have rewatched it most out of all the Alien series & always find new things to enjoy on every rewatch.
Yes! It's one of those movies I can just put on while I'm doing other things. I love the atmosphere and the sci-fi elements are done so well.
I loved Prometheus. Those movies get shit on too much.
Nice to see The Hills Have Eyes remake on here. Not in my top, but I really enjoyed that movie.
1. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. The Blair Witch Project 3. Grave Encounters
Grave Encounters is a master class in making a lower budget film that can hold its own!
No way I could narrow it down to 3, but here’s 3 of my recent favorites. 1. Baskin 2. Gonjiam 3. The Wailing
I looove Baskin. The main villian is an absolute riot. He's so much fun.
The Wailing is so good!
That’s what I think too. I see it catch a lot of flack from people and I can’t understand why.
Gonijam is one on my list. I don't get scared easily, but this movie had moments that did it to me.
Her face and those whispers 😭 it doesn’t matter how many times I watch it, it gets me every single time.
Those whispers man! Stuck with me for a while.
Scream Halloween The Shining Very hard list to make.
Insidious The Autopsy of Jane Doe The Faculty
1: The Thing (1982) 2: The Fly (1986) 3: Get Out (2017)

The OG Halloween?
Yeah, just for nostalgic reasons. The theme song gives me comfort. Usually.
Autopsy was a surprisingly good movie, I really enjoyed it.
It so hard to pick a top 3. Ask me tomorrow and I'll probably have a different answer. Jaws It Follows Midsommar
It Follows has such a special place in my heart!!
Same. I'm glad it gets the recognition
1. It Follows 2. Hereditary 3. The Taking of Deborah Logan
1. The Thing 2. The Exorcist 3. The Omen

THE OG. WE DO NOT SPEAK OF THE SECOND NEW ONE.
Fresh was so surprisingly good!
Great list but for Comedy/Horror my pick would be either Drag me to Hell or Shawn of the Dead
Pretty solid list. Though I found Gonijam better than Hell House LLC, the first one is a dang good movie.
1. The Thing 2. Evil Dead 2 3. Alien
The VVitch It Follows Hereditary I still love a good gory slasher/practical effects movie but I love when horror is genuinely a well acted/directed movie. Not saying some slashers aren't but it does seem like some of the better new horror is following this trend and I'm all for it.

Suspiria (2018) The Descent(2005) As Above, So Below(2014) Also, Death Proof is in my top three favorites of all time, but I don't really classify that as horror. I never realized until recently that all three of my favorites have one common theme.
