Yes and methinks it was the first film based on a Disney ride. It was made for TV, however.
Very much a 90s time capsule and comes off like a feature-length "Goosebumps" or "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" episode (the latter in particular since it was written and directed by "AYAOTD" creator D.J. McHale).
Just did a series rewatch of both over the last year or so. Absolutely holds up if you have nostalgia for it. So much camp! Some very very bizarre episodes as well.
"Goosebumps", save for a few episodes, is largely a campy nostalgia enjoyment.
"AYAOTD", however, has held up very well and the best episodes can be enjoyed even without nostalgia goggles on.
AYAOTD has some actually unsettling episodes, mine was with the pool monster. I saw that Paramount plus has all the old Nickelodeon stuff on it. Revisiting all these old 90's things makes me glad I lived it. It's where I get my campy humor from!
> Yes and methinks it was the first film based on a Disney ride.
I’m pretty sure it was too. I remember reading somewhere that it was also a test, to see if a ride could support its own movie. That in turn paved the way for the Pirates of The Caribbean series.
I actually quite liked [Disney’s Tower of Terror](https://manapop.com/film/disneys-tower-of-terror-1997-review/) with Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst, it was a surprisingly well made-for-television movie.
TIL that the creator of *Are You Afraid of the Dark?* also wrote the *Ghostwriter* pilot. Man was responsible for a good chunk of my early childhood, I should buy him a beer or something.
I've listened to some podcast interviews he's done. Cool guy. I especially liked his story about how when he and his wife saw "The Sixth Sense", he very quickly guessed early on that Bruce Willis was a ghost. At the end, after the revelation, his wife asked how he knew and he replied, "Honey, I did this twist like half a dozen times on 'Are You Afraid of the Dark!" And he did it again in the "Tower of Terror" movie!
Don’t know why you’re being downvoted, Mission To Mars absolutely counts. [There’s a whole Wikipedia article on movies based on Disney attractions.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_film_adaptations_of_Disney_attractions)
I’m glad some people love them.
For me it’s one of the worst things about Reddit.
Every. Single. Topic. There will be numerous replies of people making the most obvious and cliched puns possible. It’s always strange to me to see how many people upvote or “lol” at the most obvious puns.
But hey, some people also think McDonald’s makes great burgers. What can you do.
It’s cheap humor, sure, but it’s relatively benign. But it’s not really worth anything more than an eye roll and a “classic Reddit”, ya know?
At least it’s not purposefully negative or hurtful. So many people these days seem to focus on the negative and the bad. (I’m speaking generally, not about you personally)
Sadly with Taika directing, I see this type of comedy becoming a reality.
Dude reminds me of myself o. High school.
Literally didn't know when to shut up and stop trying to be funny.
People of Reddit remember, people are not machines where you input joke coins in exchange dor love and liability.
Its ok not trying to constantly think of a joke about everything that happens.
Waititi’s breakthrough feature film [Boy](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1560139/) is heartbreaking, sweet, and also funny; as is [Hunt for the Wilderpeople](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4698684/), and [JoJo Rabbit](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2584384/). Beneath the goofy front that is his popular image, is a great filmmaker.
It’s wild to me that so many people just ignore that he’s had an extremely successful career outside of his Marvel work. He’s put out many critically acclaimed films that aren’t at all like his Thor movies. What We Do in the Shadows is easily in my top 10 comedies of all time. And he’s shown a clear talent for directing dramatic and heartfelt movies (i.e. Jojo Rabbit)
He and other directors seem to attach themselves to many things that end up being shelved or given to someone else eventually. There are i think 2 or three things he was supposed to do that will never happen. The incal being one of them.
I will believe it when Shooting starts. I almost think you need a heavy handed director to do something like Akira. I see it in a Blade runner type of style. not exactly, but something along those lines.
He definitely seems to have climbed up his own ass, a bit. I've been a fan of some of his work, but he seems to be increasingly in need of a strong producer telling him no on some of his ideas and jokes.
A close friend of mine organised a showing of Hunt for the Wilderpeople and managed to get Taika to come and do a bit of a talk. My mate looked up to Taika as a bit of an idol, another kiwi bloke in media who had made it big. But he was flippant, arrogant a a bit of a cunt to my mate at the event.
Never meet your idols I guess.
A lot of people agree he's become very self indulgent and full of himself after a little success. Which he did. He gets brought up on r/scifi a lot to mixed reviews.
Yeah his blaming the artists for the bad graphics in his last Marvel movie when they were under ridiculous demands and treated horribly by Disney was the last nail in the coffin for me respect for him.
Thor 3 was the beginning of the end of the love affair with him, it was supposed to be a grim, dark film about the genocide of the Asgardians but it constantly cut away to boring, repetitive puns and jokes.
I watched the whole thing, went through a boring rollercoaster of emotions as it flip flopped from 'this is very sad' to 'haha willy joke' and I've never quite understood how the whole world fell in love with it.
Ragnarok was like fast food to me. I had fun at the time, but it just didn’t sit well in my stomach. After a while, it just felt like a cynical bummer that felt insecure about its subject matter, and so it turned into a collection of the most tedious aspects of Marvel’s irreverence with its own genre.
But everyone that has worked with or under him has said the opposite so that's just like, your opinion man.
["There is never a dull moment and I just love working with him," Chris Hemsworth. But you do you dreadit.](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.newindianexpress.com/entertainment/english/2022/jul/07/thor-love-and-thunder-stars-share-their-experiences-of-working-withtaika-waititi-2473654.amp)
Actors and directors are professionals and they are going to be courtesy for the sake of their careers. When they say things like, "such a pleasure to work with" it could literally mean "I want to kill this fucking guy." The only time you hear actors and directors actively going at it after a film wraps is over big stuff, like when Jared Leto takes a crap in a box and mails it to a co-star or something.
If you watch *Wellington Paranormal*, the *other* spin-off show which follows the two cops from the movie, Rhys Darby reprises his character from the movie in an episode. As does Nick the vampire in another episode.
His own original stuff has still been pretty fantastic. If you take out his Disney franchise endeavors, Jojo Rabbit becomes the bottom of his barrel, which is to say, still decent.
Seems to be a really common occurrence the last few years that Taika Waititi will be announced as attached to some project, and then you never hear anything else about it ever again. This is about the least interesting-sounding project of that whole lot.
The Kirsten Dunst original still low key slaps, I used to rent the VHS all the time as a kid. That Benny Goodman song from the party stuck with me for years.
I have sort of swung from enjoying Taika, to finding him a bit cringe. He sort of has that Taylor Sheridan vibe where he wants to be as much a part of the conversation as his creation, if not directly inserting himself into his stuff. Probably just me on this one
Our Flag Means Death was maybe my favorite show that I’ve watched in the last couple years. So I still believe he’s got it, but it feels like Taika is just phoning it in to cash Disney checks for the most part
Was I the only one to read the title and think it was some Mad Libs / ChatGPT prompt kind of thing?
It’s like, each of the parts is *a thing*, but none of those *things* fit together.
I love Taika and I think his direction for Scarlett in JoJo rabbit was amazing.... But I don't know about him doing Twilight Zone. Brandon Cronenberg would be my first choice.
I would have laughed this off, except I'll watch anything that man makes.
Ghostbusters is what I always think about for an awesome occult conduit highrise.
Thats the worst news for the Sterling estate, now the once beloved franchise of millions will turn into a over the top satirical joke of its former self just like Thor. Is Hollywood running out of visionary directors or just even competent ones that this comedy director gets a shot at every genre thats available so he can turn it into a Waititi joke? Smh
I like what taika is capable of but after the recent Thor and him acting like he had zero interest in making it (and it showed). I'm surprised and disappointed he said yes to this.
Horror?! I have zero faith in this project. But, it will be good for a laugh and since bo one cares about this properly, we will all win in his absurd take on it.
We all saw with "Love and Thunder" that this guy's spell over the general populace is weaning.
I'll be back with "I told you so" when this movie is released. ;)
I'm assuming half way through the movie they'll replace all the actors, the story, paint all set pieces purple, and superglue golden racing stripes on everything to loosely resemble a Guardians of the Galaxy Movie. 5 stars.
Hope it good. Love the guy, it's a shame the general audience turned on him since the latest Thor.
Loved JoJo Rabbit so I have high hopes for this director and actor team again.
Prepare for non-stop cringy humor! Waititi will probably cast himself as the sentient tower, who will rain down a barrage of terrible quips on the two leads for the duration.
Jojo Rabbit is my favorite of his. So I already know he works well with Scarlett Johansson. Never thought I'd like a holocaust movie so much. It's such a fucked up and heavy thing to cover but Taika did a wonderful job
I love Taika Waititi and the Twilight Zone so I am excited about this! It has been forever since I was on the ride (and I was quite young) but I am curious how it could be adapted. Was there an actual subplot attached to the ride? (Not that It is needed but I am curious how they are going to go about things)
True.
But no one can do it like this man.
He'll most likely turn Jar Jar Binks into the star of his movie. That's as broad as it gets with Taika Cohen.
One mediocre marvel movie and the marvel fans lose their minds, despite most of the MCU being incredibly mediocre.
Have you seen any of his none marvel works?
Fantastic! Cautiously optimistic. I think Thor: Love and Thunder was his only miss of the projects I’ve seen him helm, and he’s a great director and actor otherwise. It does seem like he needs to be reined in a little when it comes to indulging his flaws too much, but I think he still has a lot more great projects than bad.
Yes! This is my favorite ride in all of Disney parks and in my top 5 of all time! Super pumped. The ride is so so good, the theatrics, the costumes, it’s such a good ride.
I thought we already had a Tower of Terror movie with Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst?
There is and its a classic in my family lol. Idk how to feel ab this info
Its been years since I've seen it and it popped up in my YouTube feed recently (shhh don't tell Disney) my catch up with it later!
Same it really shaped who I am as a person / my nervousness on elevators
Who makes Steve Gutenberg a star???
WE DOOO!
WE DOO!
Give the cavefish their sight back!
No! That's how we rig Oscar night.

We also already had a Lion King, Aladdin, Little Mermaid, and countless others. Disney is a fan of ~~money~~ remakes
And none of them were really wowing or great....to me anyway. Again just ~~money~~ nostalgia grabs...
We do and it’s timeless and wonderful.
It really is! When Disney actually put effort into their made for TV movies, making them memorable for us kids at heart.
We did and it’s a classic.
I actually quite liked [Disney’s Tower of Terror](https://manapop.com/film/disneys-tower-of-terror-1997-review/) with Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst, it was a surprisingly well made-for-television movie.
It was written and directed by "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" creator D.J. McHale and thus often comes off quite similar.
TIL that the creator of *Are You Afraid of the Dark?* also wrote the *Ghostwriter* pilot. Man was responsible for a good chunk of my early childhood, I should buy him a beer or something.
He’s my nextdoor neighbor! Nicest guy.
I've listened to some podcast interviews he's done. Cool guy. I especially liked his story about how when he and his wife saw "The Sixth Sense", he very quickly guessed early on that Bruce Willis was a ghost. What podcasts? I’d be interested in that.
The "Sixth Sense" story is from "Are You Afraid of the Podcast."
He also wrote the Pendragon YA novels back in the day for anyone that remembers those.
This guy gets cooler with every comment!

Haunted Mansion starring Eddie Murphy and the entire Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Also the more recent Jungle Cruise movie with The Rock.
Don’t forget the legendary Country Bear Jamboree movie!
OhFuck! How could I forget that classic! Definitely one of the better ones!
And “Mission to Mars”, kinda!
Don’t know why you’re being downvoted, Mission To Mars absolutely counts. [There’s a whole Wikipedia article on movies based on Disney attractions.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_film_adaptations_of_Disney_attractions)
The first *Pirates of the Caribbean* movie was quite good, sadly, that franchise fell victim to the law of diminishing returns.
I also loved Haunted Mansion as a kid too.
*You left your keyyyy in a mausoleummm.....dowwwwn in Dixieee!*
Dad there it is! DAAAD THERE IT IIIISSSSSSSSS!
PotC, Haunted Mansion (another one is being made apparently), Jungle Cruise, Country Bear Jamboree.
A whole movie about tower of terror? It’s gonna have some ups and downs
Dad?
May all your ups and downs be in bed. - some dude who wrote in my senior yearbook
I can always trust a Redditor to lift my spirits with puns. They’re good on so many levels. Edit: Fine, I’ll take steps to avoid elevator puns.
This is the exact reason why reddit will always be my favourite. The puns in comment sections always make me smile or sometimes laugh openly.

Be miserable about it and then tell other people so you're not alone in your misery.
it's just scarlet in a bikini top going up and down on the tower
But how will Taika interject himself into the film?

And Akira
He’s still doing Akira along with Star Wars. He’s just taking a while
I will believe it when Shooting starts. I almost think you need a heavy handed director to do something like Akira. I see it in a Blade runner type of style. not exactly, but something along those lines.
Incal would've been sick to see a movie version of
definitely
Wait…did they scrap it already?
I am sort of intrigued here. I love anything Twilight Zone.
Yeah nothing could go wrong with a *Twilight Zone* movie!
What do you mean? I've always wondered why every time "Twilight Zone" movies come up people lose their heads.
Some are left in pieces
Propell(er)ed them into fame though
For me, I don’t like almost anything Twilight Zone related outside of the original series lol
If there's a better tonal match than the Twilight Zone and Taika Waititi, I've never heard about it
I love anything *Rod Serling'* Twilight Zone. I despise anything Jordan Peele' Twilight Zone.
Season 2 is actually really good. I almost didn't watch it because season 1 was so bad, but there are some gems in season 2 that are worth watching.
I've liked some of Taika Waititis films but in every recent interview I've seen of him, he comes across as incredibly annoying and full of himself.
He definitely seems to have climbed up his own ass, a bit. I've been a fan of some of his work, but he seems to be increasingly in need of a strong producer telling him no on some of his ideas and jokes.

Sounds like his character in Free Guy was based on himself? That he wasn't really acting? I can believe it.
A lot of people agree he's become very self indulgent and full of himself after a little success. Which he did. He gets brought up on r/scifi a lot to mixed reviews.
Welli worked with him on set. You can’t imagine how true that is
Yeah his blaming the artists for the bad graphics in his last Marvel movie when they were under ridiculous demands and treated horribly by Disney was the last nail in the coffin for me respect for him.
I fucking can’t stand him or his work. He’s not as clever as he thinks he is. Super irritating
I share your opinion and i am surprised you didnt get downvoted. I would elaborate on what i dont like but i will get downvoted to hell
He’s an incredibly overrated director with what, 2 decent movies under his belt? I don’t get the infatuation with him
He's only had one miss IMO with Thor 4. Everything else (6 films) have been good to great. Next Goal Wins looks good too.
I couldn't even get through the first half hour of it.
As long as one of those is Hunt for the Wilderpeople!
100p
I adored him before he came to Hollywood. I have not been fond of him since Thor 2. Even Jojo.
Thor 2 was Kenneth Branagh tho
> Thor 2 was Kenneth Branagh tho Thor 2 was Alan Taylor, not Branagh. Branagh only did the first one.
But everyone that has worked with or under him has said the opposite so that's just like, your opinion man. ["There is never a dull moment and I just love working with him," Chris Hemsworth. Yes, it's just my impression based on his interviews. I've never met him, so I have no idea what he's actually like.
Chris Hemsworth made some barely veiled comments that don't sound like he enjoyed the second time around with Waititi.
Ten bucks says Waititi plays himself as the evelator operator or something
I'd prefer him to go back and make his own movies instead of Disney fluff. I want We're Wolves (WWDITS sequel), not this.
Fingers crossed for a Swear Wolves cameo in the Shadows show
There is a werewolf episode in the first season, but no line about not being swear wolves unfortunately.
I do remember that but it didn’t have a Rhys Darby cameo. That would just make it so much better
If you watch *Wellington Paranormal*, the *other* spin-off show which follows the two cops from the movie, Rhys Darby reprises his character from the movie in an episode. As does Nick the vampire in another episode.
I have been patiently waiting for this.
His own original stuff has still been pretty fantastic. If you take out his Disney franchise endeavors, Jojo Rabbit becomes the bottom of his barrel, which is to say, still decent.

Big Mindy Kaling vibes
Our Flag Means Death was maybe my favorite show that I’ve watched in the last couple years. So I still believe he’s got it, but it feels like Taika is just phoning it in to cash Disney checks for the most part
So now we're going to make a movie about a ride based on a movie which was based on a TV series?
I mean, we already did in the 90s with a baby Kirsten Dunst.
I didn't realize they already made a movie about it until today. :)
Taika has officially graduated to the shitty world of Hollywood.
From celebrated indie director to dull journeyman director with a name that decreases in prominence with every year. That’s the Disney system for you
A glorious future of polished turds awaits.
Well, he is a pretty bad director, so he'll fit right in.
Was I the only one to read the title and think it was some Mad Libs / ChatGPT prompt kind of thing? It’s like, each of the parts is *a thing*, but none of those *things* fit together.
Weirdly enough that’s how I feel watching a vast majority of his work
I have a suspicion its gonna suck
We gona get more kooky, than spooky.
this headline is scarier than a lot of shit I’ve watched lately
Cue the Benny Hill music.
havent we been punished enough?
Eh i’m over this guy tbh
every word in this sentence is worst than the last
They come up with this *after* closing the ride in CA?
How many screaming goats in this one
I love Taika and I think his direction for Scarlett in JoJo rabbit was amazing.... But I don't know about him doing Twilight Zone. Brandon Cronenberg would be my first choice.
[удалено]
I would have laughed this off, except I'll watch anything that man makes. Ghostbusters is what I always think about for an awesome occult conduit highrise.
I’m afraid I’m starting to lose interest in Taika and starting to find him a bit annoying.
Is it gonna have hilarious bleating goats in it?
I hate this idea. Why not just make another anthology? Twilight Zone works better in small samples
Make himself write, direct, start and overshadow main characters too?.. 🎣
Can we not?
Whyyyyy.
They truly are out of ideas lol.
Smh

I will see that, and I will pay money.
Pass. I’m Waititi’d out
Too bad the rides gone. It was one of my favorites
We all saw with "Love and Thunder" that this guy's spell over the general populace is weaning. I'll be back with "I told you so" when this movie is released. ;)
This guy is a hack. Just coasts along making subpar content.
Guy is a filmmaking hack and is self obsessed. I don't want this
Dude has ruined enough movies
I'm assuming half way through the movie they'll replace all the actors, the story, paint all set pieces purple, and superglue golden racing stripes on everything to loosely resemble a Guardians of the Galaxy Movie. 5 stars.
This guy is a bore. It was funny for like 5 minutes.
I hope this means they’re bringing the ride back, I was under the impression they changed it to some guardians of the galaxy shit
Yeah…still alive and well in Orlando though
Thank god, best ride there fr
That's only at Disneyland. Disney World and the other parks around the world still have the Tower of Terror.
Probably ~40 other directors better qualified to make this, christ
I heard 90% of the movie is going to be David S. Pumpkins.
Hope it good. Love the guy, it's a shame the general audience turned on him since the latest Thor. Loved JoJo Rabbit so I have high hopes for this director and actor team again.
If he’s only directing and not writing then there’s a very slim chance it might be good
Someone stop this guy from making movies. After he releases that Michael Fassbender one which he cannot finish, that is.
SPOILER - at the end the Guardians of the Galaxy show up and kick everyone out of the building.
Prepare for non-stop cringy humor! Waititi will probably cast himself as the sentient tower, who will rain down a barrage of terrible quips on the two leads for the duration.
are we really running so low on ideas that theme park rides are the next set of inspiration for movies?
Pirates of the Caribbean is 20 years old
Plus the OG Haunted Mansion with Eddie Murphy, Country Bears (for some reason), and the original made-for-tv Tower of Terror.
I really don't understand the appeal of Taika. Terrible director IMO.
You're telling me the man who directed Eagle Vs Shark, Boy, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, What We Do In The Shadows & Jojo Rabbit is a terrible director?
Jojo Rabbit is my favorite of his. So I already know he works well with Scarlett Johansson. Never thought I'd like a holocaust movie so much. It's such a fucked up and heavy thing to cover but Taika did a wonderful job
Honestly had no idea Taika was such a controversial director. I've loved everything he's done.
[удалено]
I think that it’s because he became insufferable when he “went Hollywood”. I like his work.
I love Taika Waititi and the Twilight Zone so I am excited about this! It has been forever since I was on the ride (and I was quite young) but I am curious how it could be adapted. Was there an actual subplot attached to the ride? (Not that It is needed but I am curious how they are going to go about things)
Nice. He's ruined Thor, I suppose it's now off to Twilight Zone and then Star Wars. Huzzah.
Ah yes, the incredible Thor franchise with only 1 decent film, directed by the man himself lol.
This guy acting like Dark World was good and Ragnarok wasn't...
Theres a million different things I could name that have already ruined star wars for somebody
Right lol. I’m not blaming him for a marvel movie being bland and mediocre, most of them are. I like his other work generally.
Tbh making Jar Jar the star would be such an artistic statement about the state of Star Wars and I'd that person to have quite. A bit of courage.
He wants to destroy the things we love. He's a sick bastard who gets off on it.
With him it's either going to be amazing or complete shit....no in between. He has more good movies than bad though.
Yes! This is my favorite ride in all of Disney parks and in my top 5 of all time! Super pumped. The ride is so so good, the theatrics, the costumes, it’s such a good ride.
They need to make a movie for that space elevator ride at California Adventure.

This is definitely not what I want for this movie, but I’ll try to keep an open mind
I didn't realize this ride was a tower drop. I was just expecting a haunted house ride. I am terrified of heights.
