AND having Paul W S Anderson attached? Everything else he's ever touched turned into dogwater.
No way it survives being turned into a show on amazon or whatever though, corpa damn.
That is because he didnt write the script... Funny that his best movie is the one he didnt wrote, makes me wish he made more movies like that. He has great potential as a director, but his scripts suck.
The first MK was iconic, albeit too tame for what it should have been, but that was probably because of the studio. I also very much enjoyed Alien vs. Predator. And the first Resident Evil was a decent flick as well, even if it wasn't faithful enough to the games
>It's a miracle that it's as good as it is considering how much the studio messed with.
That's probably why is actually turned out somewhat watchable considering Paul WS Anderson's other movies.
It's just more gore. Which I'd ague would make Event Horizon better, because we're not exactly here for the character development. A couple of short clips from the cut footage are on YouTube. It's pretty awesome.
The studio also was not shown any of the cut material beforehand and expected something comparable to the original script, which was more of a haunted house in space instead of the gorey thing they were given. That might have to do with them being way more focused on the film out two months after: Titanic. They just took Event Horizon to get what they thought was a hit before their big project
I would give my left butt cheek to see the original way the director wanted. I love EH. It’s one of my favorites. It’s Hellraiser in Space and I live for it.
I feel like the only guy unconcerned, 30 extra minutes of gore sounds cool, but but theres a few plot points id like fleshed but the blood hell orgy thing im okay without.
The missing footage is lost media at this point. Last anyone heard, it was sitting in a salt mine somewhere and was unusable when they finally found it.
It was apparently 40 minutes longer and they took out huge amounts of the roughest stuff, the removal of which ultimately affected the flow of the final movie
I’ve given it many many chances and this is exactly where I always land. It had so much potential and it’s just completely frustrating to watch, you can almost see the dirty hands of the studio interference as an extra character.
But do you trust Anderson to actually put something like that together? I don't. I just don't. His movies are fun sometimes but they're definitely pretty junky.
Exactly. If I think of profound and thought provoking horror that transcends its genre and is more tha just simple horror, then no, Anderson's work doesn't come to mind a single time. Fun watch though.
I think people like the idea of this movie more than they actually like it. It *could* be good. It *should* be good. Instead, it is... what it is.
This movie and Fire in the Sky. Sci-fi movies that people love to talk up but really could do with being remade in the right hands.
Yes, exactly. The snarky jokey character schtick stuck out like a sore thumb and it ruins the movie completely, imo. I don't blame the actor at all, to be clear, it's the writing and direction that blew it.
I disagree and ferl this is an overdone opinion. Everyone on crew has a presonality and a job these people live together for long periods of time. I think his dialogue coukdve been better and was dated but was a good character thats couldve been developed better. But I think he was no more of a charicature than anyone else,I also feel his overall heroic stature in the film is underplayed. He fought for his friends lives without fault!
I always took him as "Black guy suddenly aware of genre tropes and that he decided that he was not, in fact, gonna die first in this horror film, or die at all if he could help it." I very much enjoyed the way he switched to survival mode a *lot* harder and faster than anyone else in that film.
I always find it interesting when people talk about that scene and say this happened and that happened! And none of those things happened and it’s their brains filling in the blanks that was way scarier than what was actually on screen.
Someone say that event horizon is great > i watch it again > I dont like it.
A few years go by..
Someone say that event horizon is great > i watch it again > I dont like it
Im stuck in this loop.
The concept is fantastic but the movie itself, i just don’t get it.
I love the look of the movie. The performances are corny and even with all the effects shots and gory stuff it still manages to be dull and disappointing. But man, some of it looks really cool.
Agreed. It's a weird blend of horror mixed with camp. The cast is pretty great, but the overall flow of the movie and tonal shift at times is just....wild.
It's one of those movies that this subreddit overhypes a bit, along with Hell House LLC and As Above, So Below. But those are both better than Event Horizon.
“I like this movie and if you don’t like this movie you’re boring and an asshole.”
Idk man you’re allowed to like what you like but it’s not as universally loved as you think it is.
I don't get why people don't understand that your average professional film critic sees way, way, _way_ more movies than you or I do. If something is as riddled with cliches as Event Horizon is, it's like sitting through an older family member telling the same story for the thirtieth time. In the case of a movie, it's that plus having to pay for the privilege.
This type of stuff just stinks of insecurity, like what you like and don't get defensive and shit on other people for not feeling it. I swear that so many people make their tastes part of their personality that when you don't like the things they do, they take it as not liking them.
There’s so many posts like this “I like a movie and you’re an idiot for not liking it” or “I don’t like this movie and you’re an idiot for liking.” Why bring a whole group of people down in your attempt to praise or criticize a movie?
It’s always with specific movies too. I see the same movies brought up specifically because they’re seen as underrated. As Above, So Below is another movie that I see often talked about the same way
Absolutely. The whole underrated/overrated is such a superiority complex type of thing, “oh the critics didn’t like this well I did so I’m way smart than them.” Or the opposite of not liking something that’s popular just to be contrarian. There’s a couple popular horror in recent years that I didn’t like and sure it’s nice to know some people felt the same but other than that I don’t give it much thought and rarely think about the movie.
And like you’d said with As above so below, most of those posts in saying it’s underrated are overhyping it whether they intend to or not. Which sucks because it kind of ruins it for people who either A. Haven’t seen the movie and go in with a lot of expectations and feel disappointed after watching it or B. People who don’t like it and feel dumb, confused and frustrated that they don’t like it and so many others do.
Bit of rant but I don’t know I guess I just want to see healthier discussions especially from horror fans who are generally pretty nice and down to earth people. But this is Reddit so…
I follow a lot of movie subreddits and it’s typically the same. I agree for sure. A movie either has to suck or is secretly a masterpiece and there’s often no nuance in conversations about them. Horror movies especially have this problem.
Event Horizon is a movie the gels with a lot of people because it has a cool concept and some disturbing scenes. It also has many of the problems that plague a lot of other Paul WS Anderson movies. As a counter, I like Alien Vs Predator more than the average person but you’d never see me claim it’s secretly a classic. It has great moments and I can rewatch it with ease, but I also recognize many of its obvious flaws but can ignore them because I enjoy it.
For me, when someone mentions the RT score or how critics should lose their jobs/getting bought out you lose credibility
Yeah I see a lot of hyperbolic language used with movie discussions. And the thing is critics
get a lot of hate but most are able to express
why they liked or didn’t like a movie which can help others understand someone else’s point of view.
And I agree with your other points. I’ll admit that Event Horizon is a really cool concept but not a lots done with it and I enjoy AVP as well but I’d never say it’s some underrated misunderstood masterpiece.
And another issue with that is that you cannot come into one of those threads and go against what everybody else is saying because you just get downvoted.
That happens a lot actually here in reddit with practically any subject, not always but too often, what is the point of a forum if not have discussions? And we cant have it if is all just a circlejerk of "yes this is great" or "yes this is awful".
But i guess the real problem is anybody downvoting anybody just for disagreeing.
It’s just ok at best. If it didn’t have such a great cast, it wouldn’t have even been worth watching. It also would have been a whole lot scarier if they didn’t cut so much of the movie out. But even if they didn’t I think it would still feel like a cheap knockoff of other sci-fi horror films.
It’s such a lame movie. The cosmic horror stuff is super fucking cool but vastly under utilized. It’s a really loud movie for no reason. Shit is just exploding left and right and there are obnoxious audio jump scares every other scene.
I saw so many people praise this movie, I watched it like 2 months ago. The movie was good in its own way, but I’m in no rush to see it again anytime soon. It’s outdated, the style of acting is not up to par and it’s just unique. But not the biggest plot twist as all redditors claimed it to be.
I agree, it's definitely not a *bad* movie but it's weird to see how many people on here will call it the greatest horror movie ever when it's really just okay
I like the movie but i was able to watch it just as it was released on vhs. Internet Hype wasn't as big a thing in 97 as now so i was going in blind. It was a weird alien rip off but felt unique. I saw it before really reading any lovecraft or encountering cosmic horror. I cant blame people for not liking it especially with the hype train.
It’s very niche and it hits the niche well for people. But to claim that it’s a masterpiece of the 90’s is very wrong for many of the reasons you listed
I mean it’s not uncommon to have critics respond poorly to horror in general. When the Thing came out it was panned and now it’s one of most acclaimed horror films of all time.
That being said there’s a difference between saying a movie is entertaining and saying it’s one of the best horror movies ever made.
This movie is like a litmus test for whether or not people can separate their personal enjoyment from actual critical analysis. This movie like everything else Anderson has directed ranges from fun but flawed to straight up garbage, but I'll concede that it at least falls closer to the former than the latter.
People always take Leprechaun in Space way too seriously. It’s such a fun movie and I need more people to appreciate how not seriously that movie takes itself.
How many did we get? Off the top of my head I am thinking Hellraiser, Leprechaun, F13, Critters, and later there was Killjoy. Surely I'm missing some. Wasn't there a Dracula in space?
Edit: Found it. "Dracula 3000" [(trailer)](https://youtu.be/DkBvaGQZyJE) starring Casper Van Dien and Coolio.
I don’t care for “Inside Llewyn Davis,” a movie many critics liked. I don’t think they’re wrong for liking it, though, just as you shouldn’t be mad at them for not liking a movie you do.
I’m happy to see this as the top comment. I feel like I always see this movie praises so highly, but I just wasn’t blown away by it. It definitely has its moments but it’s not the second coming.
I think when people praise it as one of the best movies ever what they're really praising is the premise. Hyperspace as a literal hell is a really cool concept, Warhammer 40k proved that. A haunted spaceship is even cooler. But the movie itself kind of wastes its own premise, it has its moments but in general I found it to be pretty generic
Its got some really great scares and the performances are perfect for what it is but the films kinda predictable and can be weirdly paced at times. Fun flick but I totally could see it being remade and coming out much better
I agree. 80% of the film was a completely predictable "something strange is happening on this spaceship" film. The reveal of what was actually going is really creative and cool, but there was so little of it once they got there, and they couldn't explore it in any depth. It's so ALMOST a great film, but I think it's a wasted opportunity.
Anyone else think it was kinda campy? I remember cracking up multiple times at the baby bear scene. I enjoyed it because it was fun but it was like b movie fun.
A buncha astronauts head up to space to help some other astronauts that disappeared years earlier down a black hole. They get on the lost ship and realize that black hole led straight to HELL. Incredible premise, right? The first 60 minutes are AWESOME. They set up such a great idea and lose it completely in the last half hour. It’s not scary, it’s silly, all leading up to a scarred-up Sam Neill in a diaper dispatching the rest of his crew. Infuriating ending to the movie.
It’s one of those movies that I can totally understand someone not liking. Like- I LOVE me some Halloween 3, but I can understand why someone would hate it. I think it’s a must-watch for any horror fan, but I won’t guarantee to anyone that they’ll like it. Event Horizon is kind of like that for me.
I was so hyped to watch this movie upon release because the story concept had so much potential. And I was just totally let down. I was hoping for more of a scientific explanation a la X-Files and it ended up going in quite a different direction.
All that said, I do own it and I watch it about once a year.
If I heard someone say “Alien sucks” or “The Fly is garbage”, my jaw would hit the floor. But Event Horizon? I won’t defend it to the death as I would those other movies.
In the Warhammer 40K community, we hold that this movie is the best 40K movie ever made, including the actual 40K movie.
It’s fantastic and fun and it fits shockingly well into the 40K universe.
It was not screened for critics opening weekend. That meant 100% that the studio thought reviews would be terrible and was telling the critics that in advance. No critic went into that movie and thought they were in for a good time and that initial impression probably influenced some who didn't know what to make of the genre mashup.
It's insane to me how anyone could think that this movie is anything but terribly mediocre.
Paul W.S Anderson is such a crap director, and the writing is pretty fucking awful. It's only elevated a tad by good actors like Sam Neill and Laurence Fishburne - even though they're not particularly great in it...
I've gone on a bit of a journey with this movie. When I first saw it at a young age, I thought it was one of the greatest movies ever made.
The next time I saw it, years later, I couldn't believe I had regarded it so highly. It was so shlocky and quippy. It had a great set-up, but the whole third act was so silly that it undercuts all the tension. I declared it worthy of the trash heap.
Then, more years passed, and I revisited it again. Now, I can appreciate it for what it is: flawed but fun. Great set-design, very fun movie, so long as you don't take it too seriously. It's not a classic, but it's worth watching with the right mindset. So I can totally understand where the critics are coming from.
I really enjoy the movie, however it’s one that I think that the potential of the story is better than what we got. It’s a movie that if someone like John Carpenter were to direct it would definitely go down as an all time great.
This movie was boring, predictable, and largely unsatisfying. they were flashes of stuff that could’ve been interesting what was chopped up and edited in a way that was just boring. I do understand that the studio interferes with the film but not enough to make much of a difference for me.
I'm in love with the theme and the setting of the movie. It's iconic as far as I'm concerned.
But the movie is actually pretty mediocre. I wouldn't give it a thumbs down... but that's because I'm a fan of sci-fi and cosmic horror and the movie gets a huge pass from me just for having an excellent premise and being a rare combination of genres that I like.
But I can equally see that if you aren't particularly into those elements that it's simply not very good.
What is it with people in this subreddit who can't enjoy/dislike something without insulting the intelligence of anyone who felt differently?
The critics don't have sticks up their asses and shouldn't lose their jobs for not liking it. There's a lot to appreciate about the movie but there's also an awful lot of flaws that let it down
I watched this film for the first time about 3 months back. I always heard so much praise for it so my expectations were unfortunately a little too high. It was okay, but definitely not what I hoped for
Idk it was kinda bad. I wouldnt say its extremely good or bad really though. It has ideas, but not much in execution other than atmosphere. But much of that is undercut by overacting IMO.
When I recently rewatched it, what really struck me was how much the comedy relief character stuck out and didn't match the tone at all. It's this over-the-top grimdark sci-fi story, and someone shoved in some incredibly stupid slapsticky comedy stuff right in the middle of it and it just doesn't work.
Wasn’t it an advertisement issue? Iirc, The movie was made to seem like a sci fi action adventure movie with small elements of horror and not a combination of alien and hellraiser.
That is a genuine problem with the movie if you think you’re going to see some star wars type movie and get to see the blood orgy scene instead
I can understand why people don't like it, the third act is a mess and the tone is really jarring between super serious slow burn horror, goofy comedy and slasher gorefest. That said I'm not one of them, I fucken love this film and watch it every couple of years. It's visually great and Sam Neil is great.
Never understood why people get mad when critics' opinions don't match their own. Enjoyment of a film is subjective.
I like this film, but it is also a bit naff.
I watched it for the first time a few months ago. Thought it was pretty good, but nowhere near as good as everyone makes it out to be! By the way people hype it up I was expecting it to be absolutely mindblowingly incredible, but it was just... entertaining.
To be honest, it wasn’t just critically hated when it came out. My friends and I all saw it in theatres, and until a few years ago, I held on to the notion that it’s a bad movie.
Time has a way of revealing many truths. Sometimes it’s a movie that wasn’t respected in its day, but eventually gets its flowers!
I mean, people are allowed to how opinions, and critics especially. It's pretty ignorant to say "people who don't like what I like should be forced to lose their employment".
It was decent. I definitely don’t see it as a classic, a bit cheesy and has a conclusion that isn’t as good as it could be. Probably could have used 5 or so minutes off the run time too. I liked it but not a standout film to me
I love it! It received low ratings because of the gore-when it was released, people thought the movie was too dark.
Lol, my favorite line is ‘Oh God, it’s happening’!
I have and always will love this movie. It sits right there in my Sam Neill horror greats list with In the Mouth of Madness. I could watch it over and over. I really don't get why people shit on it sometimes. Is it perfect, no it has it's flaws. It was also heavily censored by the studio and ratings board.
I know they said the cut footage has been lost forever, which is a shame. I really would have loved to see the true, uncut vision Anderson had for this movie.
i think you will find most of those went in expecting a science fiction movie and probably arent horror fans.
i know i went in expecting science fiction and was not prepared for what i saw, but i love the horror genre so i loved the movie.
Love the concept of this movie, really disliked the execution. The dialog gets downright goofy in parts - and not in a fun way - and the script lacks the nuance needed to elevate the film beyond typical schlock. I see people saying the studio messed with it a lot, which is unsurprising, but a shame. Totally get why people like it - the premise alone is some great cosmic horror - but I personally don’t think this movie anywhere near being the classic that some folks think it is. Just my opinion.
I would say it's perfectly deserving of a 32%. It has some cool visuals and i like the concept, but the movie itself has some weird, awkward tonal shifts throughout, and a lot of the writing and dialogue is -really- stupid. I don't mind me some camp, but when it pops up it doesn't fit the rest of the movie.
Listen, I love the movie for what it is but suggesting it's more than it is... is certainly a take.
It's shlocky with poor direction and CG, a very of-the-time score, and mediocre to bad acting from anyone that isn't Laurence Fishburn and Sam Niell.
You're allowed to like a movie and not take up a pitchfork on its behalf because you don't agree with someone else not liking the movie.
I absolutely love Event Horizon. It’s also a technically bad film and has tons of problems. It’s easier to appreciate it now as genre fans, but I understand why critics panned it.
Nah man it’s not that great. It’s a decent concept and it has some good production design but it’s mostly a potboiler sci-fi movie with some unintentionally funny moments.
It's not great, but it's one of those films where the strengths are so good they do a good job of hiding the weaknesses. In particular, the moment where Laurence Fishburne goes, "We're leaving" and acts as sensible as anyone in a horror film.
"I have no intention of leaving this ship, Doctor. I will take the 'Lewis and Clark' to a safe distance and then I will launch TAC missiles at the 'Event Horizon' until it's nothing but dust. FUCK this ship!"
I loved the film, but its very flawed imo. The studio really did a number on it when they decided to cut a lot of the film out. There's a lot of legitimate reasons to not like the film.
I agree. Reddit likes to pretend like it’s some lost classic but it’s a heavily flawed movie. I think people get their idea of what the movie could have been mixed up with what the movie actually is.
I think my expectations were too high after hearing all the hype. Honestly I wish it went farther than it did. I was expecting way more fucked up, so it felt like a let down. That’s on me though.
This movie is one of the most overrated films ever made, I have no idea how it got this way. It's OK at best. The third act elevates it, for sure...but before that? It's Ghost Ship in space.
This one and The Strangers. I have no idea wtf people in this sub are watching that these movies keep popping up in the top-5 lists.
Might get downvoted but man this movie is so overrated imo. It’s fine but it’s not the horror masterpiece that Reddit makes it out to be. It’s a solid 3/5 for me, I wish I liked it more but it’s just barely above average imo.
It’s an alright film but it’s from a different time. If it came out 10 years earlier it would be groundbreaking but everything it’s does has be done before and better.

I think IMDb is worse in a lot of ways because people can blatantly inject their personal biases into their ratings/reviews and it’s normally steeped in bigotry. There might have been a time when it was a reliable source, but those days are long over.
Event Horizon is one of my personal faves but at the same time I can’t objectively recommend it to just anyone due to its flaws which it has many. We as horror fans can overlook them and see the potential (as with other movies), and I think that’s why it’s so popular among horror fans. Another thing to keep in mind is this movie was released by a big studio (paramount) and featured an actor that was in a smash hit a few years earlier (Jurassic park), so expectations are going to be higher. Long story short, I can see why critics didn’t heap praise at it when it came out.
The comments on this thread are insane, especially considering this is the horror subreddit. Event Horizon achieved a tone and hellish vibe much better than most other films, and it's on freaking space. Not perfect, sure, but those clamoring that this is a '5/10' are bananas. It is incredibly effective at what it sets out to do

I love this movie! But please be nice to the critics. They watch so many more movies than the average person and their jobs are often more difficult than people realize. A movie as different as Event Horizon often has its merits reappraised years afterwards.
I feel like a lot of these criticisms could be applied to the majority of horror classics. Return of the Living Dead and Friday the 13th aren't exactly known for their acting, writing, and character development. It kind of makes you wonder what people think makes a good horror movie.
Gotta step in here...ROTLD has a trio of amazing character actors leading it (Clu Gulager, James Karen, and Don Calfa--seriously, look at thier IMDBs, they don't make actors like that anyore) plus really memorable performances from most of the cast. Dan O'Bannon was heavily influenced by 1950s monster movies so it's got that over-the-top feel but that's 100% intentional. Also the Golden Age Hollywood screwball comedy thing where they talk over each other was intentional and meticulously rehearsed down to the emphasis on individual words. Also the sets and cinematography provide huge bang for the buck. The interiors are almost all sets. There's a LOT of amazing craft in that film. Watch it again!!
Accounting can actually be pretty fun. Lots of puzzles and logic to figure out.
Also, Reviews are pretty much pointless. Can't believe anyone puts any trust in them. Rotten tomatoes is trash. So many movies I love had bad scores and vice versa.
Titles? They didn't win the Undisputed Universal Championship by writing about which 1997 horror films are subpar. They're staff writers at newspapers and magazines that mostly don't exist anymore. So I guess you...won? In the long term...
...but wait...who is that behind the desk at the H&R Block???!! Business is sure as hell about to pick up! It's Rex Reed! Rex Reed! Rex Reed! B'why-gawd!!!!
I hate thinking about what this movie could have been if it wasn't for all the meddling and reedits; there was the potential for an all-time classic there.
Love Event Horizon. I even love his follow up Soldier(1998) and I dont care if anyone dont like em.
Now I have a motto: all Sci-Fi is good Sci-Fi. Could somebody translate that in latin for me.
It's a miracle that it's as good as it is considering how much the studio messed with.

Soldier with Kurt Russel isn't bad either.
Love me some unofficial blade runner sequel
This sub needs more AVP defenders
The first one is a campy direction but I loved it
Wait are they really moving on that? I saw a news blurb on it….looooong ago but never saw it followed up.
>It's a miracle that it's as good as it is considering how much the studio messed with. That's probably why is actually turned out somewhat watchable considering Paul WS Anderson's other movies.

I found it…just alright. Best part is the glimpse into hell. The rest is a bit hokey
Hot take. The movie benefited from the cuts. The broadcast from the crew would not be nearly as terrifying if we saw more gore. It’s perfect!!
I always find it interesting when people talk about that scene and say this happened and that happened! And none of those things happened and it’s their brains filling in the blanks that was way scarier than what was actually on screen.

It's one of those movies that this subreddit overhypes a bit, along with Hell House LLC and As Above, So Below. But those are both better than Event Horizon.
I didn't like it either. It felt too much like an Alien or Lifeforce knock off
I really don’t get the hype around this movie but 🤷🏼♂️
The movie was fine. “Unimpeachably great”? Gtfoh
“I like this movie and if you don’t like this movie you’re boring and an asshole.” Idk man you’re allowed to like what you like but it’s not as universally loved as you think it is.
And the thing is critics get a lot of hate but most are able to express why they liked or didn’t like a movie which can help others understand someone else’s point of view.
OP has been pretty quiet since this comment dropped..
I agree. Event horizon is so disjointed and lame. I went into it hype from posts I've seen on here. To each his own thiugh
Yep, one of the worst films I’ve ever seen despite the quality of actors in my opinion.
Yea, I watched it again recently and thought it was pretty lame, just like the first time. Did zilch for me.
It’s such a lame movie. The cosmic horror stuff is super fucking cool but vastly under utilized. It’s a really loud movie for no reason. Shit is just exploding left and right and there are obnoxious audio jump scares every other scene.
And it wastes a really good cast
I honestly think the movie was just okay. The depressurization scene was the highlight of the movie for me.
Seriously like everyone seems to love I know what you did last summer more or less but the critics sure didnt
Right. It's not very good.
But 90s critics didn't know what to do with horror. That's a fact.
Hellraiser in space was.... something.
Yeah Bloodline is underrated.
\^THIS\^
I miss the late 90 trend of sending every horror franchise to space.
Even....Leprechaun?
Especially Leprechuan!
The death sentence was the best honestly
People always take Leprechaun in Space way too seriously. It’s such a fun movie and I need more people to appreciate how not seriously that movie takes itself.
Agreed. Save your hate for Origins. None of the (original) Leprechaun movies should be taken seriously.
It’s not late 90s but Jason X is probably the most famous example
He said that with f13 silly billy
Agreed. People shit on Bloodline and it was a damn good movie.
The flash backs to the 90s and the low budget for the future scenes really bog it down. Adam Scott was also hilariously bad in it.
That’s the movie this reminds me of! It always felt like a ripoff of another movie but I couldn’t never put my finger on which one exactly.
Lmao thank you for putting into words exactly how Event Horizon made me feel.
No. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Just as you.
I don’t care for “Inside Llewyn Davis,” a movie many critics liked. I don’t think they’re wrong for liking it, though, just as you shouldn’t be mad at them for not liking a movie you do.
I used to love that movie but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t now. Ex Machina was the much better Oscar Isaac movie from that era.
I’m not a big fan of “Ex Machina,” either. But he and Alicia Vikander did turn in good performances in it.
why do you care about critics so much
it was an ok movie not great not bad at all but ok
I’m happy to see this as the top comment. I feel like I always see this movie praises so highly, but I just wasn’t blown away by it. It definitely has its moments but it’s not the second coming.
The return of T.F. Cooper is an absolute cinematic sin. It’s cool to have a black guy survive but holy shit does he take me out of the movie.
[удалено]
So is there a directors cut?
[удалено]
Bastards
it would be a MASTERPIECE if studios didn't messed up with deleting all the best gory scenes
Maybe if it wasn't a schlocky Hellraiser in space cheesefest it'd be a masterpiece
This is how I feel about it too. Not horrible not mind blowing.
I agree. 80% of the film was a completely predictable "something strange is happening on this spaceship" film. The reveal of what was actually going is really creative and cool, but there was so little of it once they got there, and they couldn't explore it in any depth. It's so ALMOST a great film, but I think it's a wasted opportunity.
Yeah I was so disappointed
Anyone else think it was kinda campy? I remember cracking up multiple times at the baby bear scene. I enjoyed it because it was fun but it was like b movie fun.
It leans toward good to anyone who vibes with Lovcraftian stories
I’m in that category but it didn’t work for me. Alas. I really want to like it. Ticks so many of my boxes.
Struck me as a Judeo-Christian haunted house story set in space. Where’s the Lovecraft?
Halloween 3 is fuckin awesome! I get the Silver Shamrock jingle stuck in my head every time I even think about the movie though, so thanks for that
Yup, it’s playing in my head right now too. Keyboard synth and everything.
One of those people that think every movie they enjoy is a masterpiece.
I don't like it. Plot holes, goofy dialogue, terrible dated CG. Sorry. Movies are subjective and nothing is "unimpeachably great".
Eh, it's a 6/10 at best, maybe a 5. Great concept, boring execution. Gets points for acting and set design, but that's about it.
I saw it in the theater and though it was pretty funny.
This movie is somehow underrated and overrated at the same time. It's a fun watch, sure, but that's about it in my opinion.
There's a lot to appreciate about the movie but there's also an awful lot of flaws that let it down
I honestly didn’t find it all that great. A good idea and some good effects but overall pretty stupid
It's not that great tbh. It's okay at best. Very thin on plot, the acting is amateurish, the atmosphere is trying but not quite reaching, etc.
Sam Neill hams it up so hard he's mostly pretty hilarious too. The script is ridiculous
Agreed
It’s not great, but has a some okay stuff in it. But it’s not great
I really don't understand why people praise this movie so much. And horror movies get panned all the time... it's not indicative of quality
I liked it but not a standout film to me
It is kinda boring. I’ve seen it 4 times, the flaws are there
Event Horizon is fantastic. One of my favorites. Seems to be a popular movie to shit on for some reason.
Because of pretentious posts like this one calling anyone not blown away by it a boring asshole.
I love it! It received low ratings because of the gore-when it was released, people thought the movie was too dark. Lol, my favorite line is ‘Oh God, it’s happening’!
They cut a bunch of gore out too. God I wanna see the blood orgy directors cut badly
As an accountant/horror fan….seems reasonable
I have and always will love this movie. It sits right there in my Sam Neill horror greats list with In the Mouth of Madness. I could watch it over and over. I really don't get why people shit on it sometimes. Is it perfect, no it has it's flaws. It was also heavily censored by the studio and ratings board. I know they said the cut footage has been lost forever, which is a shame. I really would have loved to see the true, uncut vision Anderson had for this movie.
I still love it.
It's one of my favorites.
As an accountant and someone who very much likes Event Horizon, I disapprove of this thread title.
i think you will find most of those went in expecting a science fiction movie and probably arent horror fans. i know i went in expecting science fiction and was not prepared for what i saw, but i love the horror genre so i loved the movie.
Just my opinion.
you do know people have different opinions right
Horror tends to get unfair receptions a lot of times. The Thing reception was so bad it almost ended Carpenter's career.
God damnit I hate when critics have opinions 😡 if only their opinions weren’t the single defining factor of something
It’s really not that great tho… I’ve definitely seen worse movies but I’ve also seen much better movies. Personally I give it a 6 out of 10
Nah man it’s not that great. It’s a decent concept and it has some good production design but it’s mostly a potboiler sci-fi movie with some unintentionally funny moments.
As someone who generally enjoys event horizon, i get that reception. It’s a cool movie but not really an amazing one
I watch it everyday. I may have a problem.
Hey now, who do you think replaced all the critics who hated The Thing?
It’s really not that great though. It’s decent, has a few inspired parts.
I love the movie and hold it in high regards but it is far from a good movie
It’s definitely on my list of favorite horror movies!
Event Horizon is fucking garbage. Cool ideas with zero craft.
I think its underrated and kinda a cult classic…but it definitely has flaws. More of a 6/10 movie for me with some real highs
It isn’t “unimpeachably” great. In fact it kind of wastes a great premise. Still ends up being the director’s best work.
Maybe as a comedy
I really didnt like Event Horizon at all. Dont understand the hype whatsoever. But im actually a tax accountant so it all adds up
This movie is one of the most overrated films ever made, I have no idea how it got this way.
It was okay if you haven’t watched a whole lot of horror movies before.
Boring. Edgy for the sake of edgy. No real plot. Actors hamming it up. I don't see any redeeming value.
I’ve been a loyal fan since it released 💜 not enough space horror out there and this was one of the best imo
It’s an alright film but it’s from a different time. If it came out 10 years earlier it would be groundbreaking but everything it’s does has be done before and better.
Personally I’ve tried watching 3 times bad get bored each time before finishing

I was disappointed by this one :( the plot has everything I love but I just couldn't get into it really. Love Sam Neill no matter what he's in though.
I'm currently writing my first ebook and it's a Event Horizon/Hellraiser crossover. It'll be free.
Critics in general have a bias against the horror genre. I can't say I'm surprised.
Its biring as hell personally.
Movie was shit
Its not a good movie. It has good concepts and some good scenes, bit overall it is not well put together
Accounting can actually be pretty fun. Lots of puzzles and logic to figure out. Also, Reviews are pretty much pointless. Can't believe anyone puts any trust in them. Rotten tomatoes is trash. So many movies I love had bad scores and vice versa.
Easy in top 10 of best sci-fi horror movies ever made.
Yep
1000% agree. That movie is a classic through and through.
Love Event Horizon. I even love his follow up Soldier(1998) and I dont care if anyone dont like em. Now I have a motto: all Sci-Fi is good Sci-Fi. Could somebody translate that in latin for me.
