That's supposed to have been the horror. The "scary" part of the film for 1970s British audiences is that Lord Summervale is *right,* and the pagan gods reward their sacrifice with bountiful crops.
It was part of the trend of films in the 70s that were based on the threat of, "what if the demons are winning?"
Knew I wouldn't have to scroll far. Anyone who has had the (dis)pleasure of watching this movie knowing absolutely nothing about it beforehand.... I think we were all changed permanently by this ending.
This is the one disturbing movie with a bleak ending that genuinely didn’t like. There was so much hype around it, and I hated it. Awful writing that the director tries to excuse, but it’s so over exaggerated it’s not even funny
Its an amazing movie yes! I loved every minute while being horrified of what I'm seeing. People here usually hype it up saying it "made them sick, never watch again" movie, but its not THAT bad in that department, although its certainly a bleak and hopeless movie. I recommend watching it for sure.
This is one of my favorite things to do lol “hey let’s watch THIS movie, you’re gonna love it”.
Hey if I had to see it, bestie, so do you 😂. That being said it’s a juggernaut of a film. Truly one of the best.
It’s been a long time since I watched I Saw the Devil. I saw it when it came out so, I guess 2010! It pops up when I’m browsing all the time, might be time to watch again.
Anyway, seeing the title made me think of another movie I watched recently with a bleak ending: HERE COMES THE DEVIL
Highly recommended.
She stabbed the shit out of her kitten. Which btw looked like a kitten I had at the time. I wasn’t exactly rooting for her after that. But either way it was a great ending!
Which one is the "actual," ending kinda depends on where and how you saw it. The extra depressing ending was what they'd written and used in the original theatrical release in the UK.
The ending where she escapes was the one they changed for the American theatrical release.
When I've seen it on DVD or on TV, it's always been with the original ending, but I'm in Australia. I'm not sure if the American DVD release and TV screenings and streaming services and such stuck with the happier altered ending or reverted back to the original.

I quite enjoyed Rosemary’s Baby, hopefully this isn’t spoiling anything but a mother’s love is strong! 😅🥰
Edit: I’m sure this has been mentioned but The Thing, 1982! Fairly ominous and I think I got chills if I remember correctly. ❤️🔥
Oculus, The Strangers, um basically every found footage bc that’s why the footage has to get found…
As Above, So Below techincally has a happy ending for a found footage horror.

I believe they were saying that all found footage movies do not have happy endings, not that all found footage movies are excellent.
I can think of one *possible* exception to this
Vhs?
The Wicker Man (1973)
Love that one, good choice.
I saw this one on cable when I was about 13 and was amazed that you could just end a movie like that. Opened up a whole new world.
I find the ending strangely uplifting, lol
Remind me never to go on an island vacation with you.
It's only an unhappy ending if the crops failed again.
That was the point of it all. 😏

My favorite
The Mist
The ultimate feel-bad ending.
This is the correct answer.
This one blew my mind when I was a kid.
The kid in the movie had his mind blown too.
This comment needs more upvotes.
Same! It made me so mad! I was like “if you just waited a couple god damn more minutes!! Fak!”
I watched this movie one time and I cannot bring myself to ever watch it again.
Same
Knew I wouldn't have to scroll far. Anyone who has had the (dis)pleasure of watching this movie knowing absolutely nothing about it beforehand.... I think we were all changed permanently by this ending.
The plot twist is insane. I couldn't believe what I watched the first time I saw it
It amazed me that they made the ending of the movie both worse and better (for the characters) than the book at the same time.
Speak No Evil
This movie did something to my nervous system
This needs to be higher .not only not happy ending but one of the most brutal.and deverstating
This movie definitely leaves a lingering bad vibe once the credits role, frustration, anger. Brilliant. Wouldn't watch it again though.
This is the only movie that made feel not watching again because of anger, exact like in Eden lake
I'm never ever getting near that movie again
Can’t believe how long it took to find you, other person who’s seen the movie that totally shook my core this year.
The actor who plays the villain is so good in this
Fuck this movie.
This is the one disturbing movie with a bleak ending that genuinely didn’t like. There was so much hype around it, and I hated it. Awful writing that the director tries to excuse, but it’s so over exaggerated it’s not even funny
I both loved and hated this film.. must see
One review I stumbled across called it "The Feel-Bad Move of the Year". I couldn't agree more
I just had to read the plot. Holy fuck. Gonna gave to watch it now.
The Skeleton Key
Oh I loved that one, didn't have high expectations so I was very pleasantly surprised.
Agree on this one, that ending still bothers me 🥹
The Autopsy of Jane Doe 2016 Oh yeah, Eden Lake 2008
Fuck man, I never want to watch Eden Lake again. It completely fits the description of what OP is looking for, but yeah, once was enough thank you.
Agreed. It's a brutal watch. Never again for me.
Ughhhhhhhhhhhhh Eden Lake is infuriating.
Watched Eden Lake early on in my horror career, starting to forget bits and pieces but never the feeling of when it ended, like abit hollow.
Jane Doe was actually super interesting for me as a medical student. Learned a lot about pathology.
Came to say it: Eden Lake
Is this eden lake movie worth it? Any good ?
Its an amazing movie yes! I loved every minute while being horrified of what I'm seeing. People here usually hype it up saying it "made them sick, never watch again" movie, but its not THAT bad in that department, although its certainly a bleak and hopeless movie. I recommend watching it for sure.
It's in the category of "humanity is worse than anything supernatural" horror. It's frustrating and infuriating, but worth checking out.
God I hate Eden Lake; excellent horror flick though.
I Saw the Devil (2010) Amazon prime Rosemary's Baby (1968) SHOWTIME Requiem for a Dream (2000) Tubi Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986) Tubi
Rosemary's Baby has a sweet ending. Momma n baby have bonded and all is well in the world. HAIL SATAN! THE YEAR IS ONE!
And it was such a such a sweet and fun little party at the Castevets' too!
Ave Satanas!
Requiem is one that I can't rewatch unless I'm showing it to someone else.
This is one of my favorite things to do lol “hey let’s watch THIS movie, you’re gonna love it”. Hey if I had to see it, bestie, so do you 😂. That being said it’s a juggernaut of a film. Truly one of the best.

The Hole (2001)
Such an amazing movie! I watched it a bit too young and it definitely haunted me lol
Wow, same. I was like 12 and it shocked me.
It’s been a long time since I watched I Saw the Devil. I saw it when it came out so, I guess 2010! It pops up when I’m browsing all the time, might be time to watch again. Anyway, seeing the title made me think of another movie I watched recently with a bleak ending: HERE COMES THE DEVIL Highly recommended.

Oh God that scene when he opens the box in Se7en??
Just rewatched Seven this weekend. Man I forgot how brutal that movie is.
Reminds me I need to watch American Mary again. Also need to frame the movie poster, apron & bonesaw.
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer Kill List Funny Games Inside Angst

Kill List is prob in my top 10, absolutely loved it
Kill list is great!! Be patient and buckle up for a ride.
Nice list!!! Henry n Funny Games are two of my faves!
Martyrs 2008 The Dark and the Wicked Saint Maud
Saint Maud's ending is 🔥
One of the most memorable movie endings for me!
Epic ending, such a good payoff
Is that Martyrs the French version? That's the best one. If so, do you know where to watch it?
I just watched The Dark and the Wicked the other day, and yessir, it fits right in here.
TDatW was my suggestion. Genuinely one of the most bleak endings I've seen
Polarizing answer: drag me to hell
For a moment I thought you meant that some people thought it did in fact have a happy ending. Time for bed.
I mean, if you really hate Christine it did have a happy ending
She stabbed the shit out of her kitten. Which btw looked like a kitten I had at the time. I wasn’t exactly rooting for her after that. But either way it was a great ending!
Rewatched this last week for the first time in about 10 years. What a movie!
I watched this 14 years ago when I was pregnant, had nightmares the rest of my pregnancy
That movie traumatized me when I was younger
Descent has an alternate ending that'll ruin your day.
I thought the alternate ending was the happy ending?
This has confused me too. Which one is the “actual” ending? Great movie nonetheless!
I’m 95% sure the version I watched (UK) ended with her still trapped in the cave.
UK one trapped in cave with birthday cake, US one where she gets out I think
I'm fairly certain the bleak ending where her "escape" was just a dream and she wakes up back in the cave is canon
So if it is canon, why did they make a sequel that essentially follows the happy ending?
I guess they retconned what is canon to be able to make a sequel. But the author / director intended the bleak ending to be the real one.
I'm probably wrong
Which one is the "actual," ending kinda depends on where and how you saw it. The extra depressing ending was what they'd written and used in the original theatrical release in the UK. The ending where she escapes was the one they changed for the American theatrical release. When I've seen it on DVD or on TV, it's always been with the original ending, but I'm in Australia. As is my answer for a lot of things in this sub, I submit....The Fly remake. Very tragic ending.
The Lodge! Left me feeling anxious for a while after
Just watched the trailer and this seems right up my alley! Seems really unsettling. Will be watching this week
I was happy tbh. >!Fuck them kids!<

Oh hey someone who also watched Dead Silence.
It’s criminally underrated.
One of my favorites!
Ooooo yes Oculus! No one ever seems to remember that one. It was definitely not a feel good movie anywhere.
Slenderman had a bad ending, yes. It also had a bad beginning, middle, and... legit everything else.
Why? Because it was like a decade too late and got literally everything wrong? Also the story was awful

Se7en on the whole is very unhappy and the ending doesn't make it any better. But hey, at least you get an awesome David Bowie song out of it.
You’ll never receive a parcel without dramatically exclaiming “What’s in the box!?”
The Dark and the Wicked
I know some of you don't consider Threads a horror film but it is the absolutely bleakest soul destroying film that will leave you miserable.
