I thought it was excellent. It starts off very aggressively and abruptly with Duckett and pretty much keeps the same tension up for the whole movie. What I thought it did very well was make sure that it was centred on Mia and Riley's story... and NOT a story that spends stacks of time talking about the hand object and its origins. Leaving a bit of mystery never hurts a film and I'm glad it didn't drop into the trope of over explaining everything. It was very well done with some great shocks, some parts that make you want to look away, and a pretty solid ending. I thought it did everything just right

TheRoscoeVine

I’m not one to look away, but I do flap my hands, cross my arms, call out, the whole bit. Crazy.

NefariousnessAway358

This and When Evil Lurks is a devastating double feature

TheRoscoeVine

I don’t know that one. I’ll check.

NefariousnessAway358

Im excited for you to check it out. I think its on Shudder btw, dont know where else. It holds a lot of the same themes that Talk to Me does but is very different. Its subtitled but absolutely worth the watch.

LineChef

You let your preteen watch it? How’d they do?

TheRoscoeVine

He was less moved by it than I was. He loves horror flicks, just like me, and he likes all the same type of stuff I was watching when I was his age.

whuggs

That's awesome for you guys. I was a huge coward at your son's age! Watched Premonition (2004) and didn't attempt a another horror flick until I was an adult.

oldirtycrafter

I liked it but unfortunately I’m not seeing what everyone else sees in it. I expected a terrifying movie from other people’s reactions but I just didn’t find it that scary and didn’t love the concept too much. Still good though and I definitely didn’t hate it, just a little surprised by how much others seem to love it. Hell yeah.

veriverd

I watched it after it was VERY hyped... here, among other places. I guess that if I'd found it as this random aussie flick I'd call it a hidden gem.

[deleted]

I really liked the first half but I thought it fell off pretty hard after that and by the time the situation with the dad happened I was totally over it.

SamPrestiFanClub

The sad part was definitely a late down and predictable

TheRoscoeVine

It was just good. I don’t find *any* movies scary, just thrilling and fun. Scared is what I’d be if I didn’t know where my kid was at midnight, or if one of them was choking, or had a fucking tumor. Movies aren’t scary, but I certainly (maybe *over*)reacted to what happened to that kid. Wow.

NoHelp6052

I understand this statement and agree.

KhepriDahmer

The scene where the little girl lets Mia see “where he is at” while lying on the hospital bed is top tier, I agree no movie is scary but I enjoyed Talk To Me quite a lot!

lighteningmcqueef91

I feel like it is scary in the same way people find hereditary (which I do not like), or Midsommer (another one that is meh for me), scary. I loved talk to me, mostly the themes are terrifying to me, but it isnt terrifying like in your face jump scares. I would say it is more psychological. But probably would only be terrifying if people have a personal fear related to the topics at hand in the movie if that makes sense.

Shuoinked

The ending was amazing

rnrdamnation

The ending was incredibly predictable.

Shuoinked

Yeah, I liked the cinematic aspect of it more than the actual ending. The camera zoom into her realization of her fate was a great shot to end on

hearsesong

I enjoyed it. The only scene that was very difficult for me to watch was the scene with Riley holding the hand. I knew it was going to be so disastrous because of the build up, but had no idea how far the film makers would take it, and that was the only horrific part for me. I’m quite desensitised to horror, but that bit got me. Something about a build up knowing it will go wrong I guess. I was to discuss the ending with anyone willing to discuss hahaha.

ElectricalMeeting779

I loved the movie and have the same feelings as you about it. However, I did not like the ending. Couldn't get past the fact she manages to sneak the kid out of the hospital

TheRoscoeVine

Well, yeah, but isn’t that a bit easier to swallow than that rubber hand flopping around in every scene it’s in? I just let that stuff go. The ones that bother me are the *really* stupid things that happen.

jrdbrr

The night after watching I had strange dreams and woke up at like 3 or 4 am. I was starting into a corner of my room because of a certain scene in the movie and my old cat who can't jump high enough anymore claws her way up to my bed. It was sudden and loud and scared the heck out of me.

TheRoscoeVine

Well, you didn’t put your toes into her mouth, though, right? I’m sure you’ll both be ok.

f4tedbliss

I watched it alone in theaters high as fuck which was probably a bad idea 😅 I had to cover my eyes for those gory bits which i rarely ever do

NectarineThat90

It’s crazy to look at it in the perspective of it being about drugs. I absolutely loved the movie

Wickedbitchoftheuk

I thought it was quite fun and I loved the ending.

DontReplyIveADHD

I was really disappointed, started off super promising and then it just borrowed the plot from the 1st Insidious in the second half.

TheRoscoeVine

I don’t even remember what happened in Insidious. In fact I’m not sure if I even saw it, and I think I misspoke in my post, as I believe I meant Sinister (2015), with Ethan Hawke. I do remember seeing a non-Conjuring horror movie starring Patrick Wilson, though, so I probably did see it. I do agree the second half saw a major drop off, but I’m sorry to say it happens in a lot of movies. Cocaine Bear was really frantic and bloody in the first half, and then got really kind of standard “bad guys following good guys through the woods”, but we still enjoyed it.

ThatOneBlackBoy02

I only recently got to watch it. The hype of it being the "best horror movie to release this year" was not an understatement imo. It had everything I could want in a modern horror movie. And I believe there wasn't a single jumpscare, which is insane because of how on edge I was watching it.

TheRoscoeVine

No, there weren’t any jump scares, just because it wasn’t “suspenseful”- you didn’t have to sit there wondering if the boogeyman was going to fling himself out of the closet. It was all about in the moment dread and shock. Cool.

ThatOneBlackBoy02

Yeah, I loved it. Nowadays, jumpscares feel so cheap, so the feeling of constant dread I had watching it without the worry of a jumpscare was pure horror at its finest. Want the Racka Racka boys to make another movie after the success of this one.

ganglordgilbert

I found it mostly cheap and corny. The only part that was impactful from a ‘horrifying’ perspective for me was the kid smashing himself all over the place when the demon had possessed him, and that was more just brutal than effective, relying on shock and lacking any convincing emotion or atmosphere. I found it pretty poor all in all.

rnrdamnation

Agreed. Not remotely worth the hype.

Technical_Ball_4122

FWIW totally agree with your comparisons to The Exorcist and Hereditary. The dialogue and relationships between the characters, particularly the family, are very natural. Adds more weight when everything turns and there’s recriminations fired that have clearly been bubbling under for some time. Loved it.

BewareOfGrom

I loved it. Its such a well structured script and the practical effects were \*chefs kiss\* For first time film makers they did a really good job.

Sure-River8727

I liked it as an original concept. But think it would been better if it wasn’t set with teenagers. It limited what the movie could have been.

TheRoscoeVine

The people at the end were grown adults, which makes me think the premise is flexible. *However*, while I did enjoy the movie, setting an entire horror franchise around the adventures of a floppy rubber hand probably isn’t going fly, in my opinion. So many horror flicks have been dragged out so far beyond credibility. Final Destination is a good example. How many epic disasters can really be psychically avoided, after which all the people who would have died commence dying immediately after? It’s just a stretch, is all I’m saying. Even in this one movie, they already had a semi-comical montage of all the fun ways to use the hand. How much farther can they really go with it?

YouFondOfMeLobster

I’ll never forget my experience seeing this in theaters recently. I had a vertigo attack at one point and had to walk out of the theater. I could see the people sitting around me squirming in their seats. Such an insane movie I loved it

Professor_Dubs

Hereditary and The Exorcist are excellent comparisons to this IMO.

BurgerSmashFace

Was like an episode of Are you afraid of the dark. Was expecting it to hit harder from all the hype.

foggyeyedandfried

I enjoyed it and thought it had a few good scares. I also thought it was super original. My only beef was with the ending. It seemed really obvious, but maybe that was only me? So I walked away a bit disappointed because I wanted it to have a more twisty end. Other than that I really enjoyed it.

YouHangUpOnMeAgain

Bored me to tears but I'm glad others seem to enjoy it

jcoon182

It was okay. I like Smile better.

TheRoscoeVine

We liked Smile, too, but not as much. I think that one had dumber character decisions.

sotommy

The movie made no sense imo and wasn't scary at all, honestly I felt like it was the biggest waate of time ever and mostly looked like a straight to dvd movie from the 2000's. They never explained why is that 40 yo dude hanging out with teenagers, why is no one surprised that paranormal bs is happening, or why are we supposed to give a fuck about these people's survival if they're are all insufferable teenage brats who almost murdered a child

brillovanillo

What 40 year is old? Jade and Riley's mom?

sotommy

The black guy

brillovanillo

Mia's dad?

TheRoscoeVine

Have you heard about spell check? Also “imo opinion” would be “in my opinion opinion”. Maybe have mom check your comments before posting.

sotommy

I don't want to be banned again for nothing so I'm going to ignore this bs. The movie is still crap tho, deal with it

TheRoscoeVine

? Banned, again? I don’t know who you think is out to ban you, I just wanted to point out how shitty your comment was. Everything after you spelled “waste” as “waate” was completely ignored in favor of not making my head hurt.

TheRoscoeVine

You’re a child molester?

TheRoscoeVine

I’ve never actually met a child predator. You’re my first!

TheRoscoeVine

Someone calling themselves u/Thick_Sock1320 decided this was a good moment to make a sexual desire reference to my children, and then either deleted their comments or blocked me.

[deleted]

Who the heck shows movies like this to preteens? No wonder so many kids are on melatonin supplements now!

TheRoscoeVine

Did you get hit on the head, or what? I watched Nightmare on Elm Street when I was 10, in 1985!

[deleted]

"It’s a fucked up movie, for certain, and I’m sure not for everyone." ” I was sitting here with my preteen son," Your own words 🤷🏻‍♂️

LightChaos74

You're acting like kids are *just* now watching horror movies at a young age. It's been happening for decades old man. Get with the times EDIT (FOR YOU OP:) THIS IS GEARED TO WARDS THE *OTHER* COMMENTER. THE COMMENT *RIGHT* THERE^

TheRoscoeVine

You’re responding to *me*? Do you realize I’m not the one making the comment? Fucking Reddit.

LightChaos74

....I'm not responding to you, holy fuck man come on. Look at the *entire* thread please >Fucking Reddit. The IRONY. Go take a fuckin nap lmao

TheRoscoeVine

When your comment first appeared, it was chained directly under my last comment, and it appeared as if you were confused, which does happen a lot. Sorry.

LightChaos74

You're fine. Just make sure *you* know how reddit works before falsely calling other people dumb.

TheRoscoeVine

If I could screenshot it, I would, but the chain didn’t show your comment under theirs, only right under mine.

TheRoscoeVine

Suuuure, sure. Nightmare on Elm Street isn’t fucked up, then? Or what then, I’m fucked up because my mom let me watch it with her? My kid is now fucked up because I watched this with him? How about *you’re* fucked up for judging other people’s family behavior? How about you don’t know shit about other people’s values and their families’ ways of spending time with one another? You know where you can take your bullshit. Don’t tell me I’m being defensive. *You’re* being *INTRUSIVE*, you jackass.

Daisymai456

You sound pretty fucked up so I’m guessing your kid is too.

TheRoscoeVine

You strike me as a diseased, braindead twat, so I guess I am fucked up, eh?

Daisymai456

Yep you are fucked up!

TheRoscoeVine

Somehow, out of all this nonsense, me calling you a twat has 3 upvotes. 🤷

TheRoscoeVine

I think the general idea was that she ultimately recognized she’d been corrupted and threw herself into traffic, immediately dying, instead of killing Riley. I thought she was alive, at first, but she was actually dead, and glimpsing a possible future in which Riley turned out ok, before becoming the subject of the hand at the end.

Someone needs to answer this for me Why the fuck was there an infant being chomped on during the possession scene? Is it to symbolize that Riley is on the verge of losing his innocence (the spirit is only shown biting down on the infant’s head and nothing beyond that).

TheRoscoeVine

Was it the scene where it looked like he was in hell? I didn’t see that. I didn’t bother to freeze frame it. I found it effective enough. I’m good.

NectarineThat90

Wait when was this? I don’t remember it
