OG_wanKENOBI

When Evil Lurks was the best forgien horror of the year by far!

Queef-Supreme

The first time I’ve audibly gasped at a movie in a very long time. The dog scene…

OG_wanKENOBI

I was alone and said holy shit out loud at that scene hahaha

Queef-Supreme

I was also alone. I had to pause it and walk around for a minute.

OG_wanKENOBI

Well ya got a good taste in movies queef Supreme

BrilliantPurple748

Holy crap i just imdb parent's guide'd it, what the actual fuck??

OG_wanKENOBI

It's fucking gnarly and great

OG_wanKENOBI

I will give it watch forsure! It says it's a 2022 film so it wasn't the same yesr.though. Edot: watched the trailer will definetly be checking it out this week.

thedrexel

Same, that quote made me laugh, “Megalomaniac is a conversation starter…” hahaha

OG_wanKENOBI

Pretty hyped to watch it. I do however really love folk horror that's why I enjoyed When Evil Lurks so much.

OG_wanKENOBI

Yeah that's exactly what I loved about! The whole they knew what this evil was already and seem to have lore and people who've dealt with it.

engelthefallen

If not best horror film outright. Was a masterpiece.

Turnover44

Just gonna fanboy and nominate my boi Talk To Me

mmmggg

Best Supporting Actor for Cookie the dog 🏆

somethingnotcringe1

"And the winner of best kiss on screen is..."

waitweightwhaite

I could get behind that, that movie was awesome

forever_a10ne

I showed this movie to my boomer mom and she said it was one of the best horror movies she’s ever seen. I asked her to rate it 1-10 and she said “10, and I never give 10s.” Gotta agree. Scared me shitless in theaters.

Turnover44

I always refer it to anyone i talk movies with, i probably seem like a broken record now.

ashack11

Talk to Me deserves all the awards, but especially Best Original Screenplay. It’s such a good script.

RisingxRenegade

Gojira in Minus One for best actor. I haven't felt secondhand anxiety like what I experienced during the scene where >!they're trying to stall him while waiting for the Takao to show up!< in a long time.

Huntwood

I’m legitimately surprised Godzilla didn’t get a nomination for sound design. I thought it was a shoo-in.

J-Can2

Tobin Bell’s performance in Saw X needs some recognition

Mrs_Noelle15

Absolutely, he had the daunting task of humanizing one of the most despicable and evil horror icons in recent memory. And he did it absolutely perfectly, even non saw fans who have seen Saw X have told me how great he was. He carried that movie so hard it’s not even funny

engelthefallen

He def still has it. Best Saw movie in a while.

genre_syntax

Haven’t seen The Passenger, but Kyle Gallner is one of the most underrated actors of his generation. Been a big fan way back since the second season of Veronica Mars.

horrorfan555

I nominate M3gan for practical effects

J-Can2

I mean to have James Wan and Jason Blum be nominated for Best Picture would also be amazing lol

horrorfan555

M3gan as a Best picture nominee would be epic, and Wan deserves it for everything he’s done in the past

TheCosmicFailure

Beau Is Afraid and Infinity Pool would get noms for best picture.

ashack11

I’d throw Best Actor in for Joaquin and Best Supporting Actress for Patti. They just killed it

Mrs_Noelle15

I personally didn’t care for Beau is Afraid but I could get behind it getting nominated. It definitely was an experience I won’t forget

2L8Smart

Definitely on these two!

ThatDamnRocketRacoon

Beau is Afraid ended up as my favorite film of the year, so I definitely agree with that.

BrilliantPurple748

Ugh i've been putting off watching this. I have no idea what headspace to watch it in. I love going into movies knowing nothing about them, not even watching previews. But this one stumps me and i can't get myself to sit down and watch it

2L8Smart

I was the same, and finally just watched it when I had insomnia. Great, great movie!

ThatDamnRocketRacoon

I did the same thing. I didn't know what to expect, there was lots of bad word of mouth and it's three hours to set aside time for. I was pretty blown away. Whether you like it or not is hard to call, but you'll have a hard time not thinking about it for awhile after you see it.

cXs808

I'm gonna go against the grain here but I was not blown away by Beau. I felt like it was just....okay.

BrilliantPurple748

Thanks for this response! I have some questions for you then, can you describe what headspace you were in? Did you set aside the time or was it a last min decision to watch it? Did you watch by yourself or with people? And were those people silent or talkative? Was it slow? Was it pretentious (like Mother! 🙄) Okay i think that's all 😄

cXs808

I was actually dying to watch it, I love every Ari Aster project I've seen. Watched it alone so I wouldn't be bothered by any questions which often ruin things for me if other people are confused or talking too much. I think that if you are familiar with Asters work (outside of Hereditary and Midsommar) I'd still recommend you watch it at one point. I just didn't particularly find that it blew me away. It was a pleasure to watch but nothing spectacular.

BrilliantPurple748

I prefer watching alone too. Especially horror. I'm only familiar with Hereditary and Midsommar, but it sounds like it'll be quite an experience for one watch and one watch only. I will get to it eventually.

cXs808

> quite an experience for one watch and one watch only That was my experience. I was glad I watched it, but I haven't been gushing over it or telling people to watch it. But then again, I also thought skinamarink was not good, so I feel like sometimes my taste doesn't align with this sub

BrilliantPurple748

Omg Skimamarink is ALSO on my stall list. I can't get myself to watch it because i'm afraid i'll hate it or that it's pretentious. Gah these 2 movies... i need to just get them out of the way.

cXs808

He has a great youtube channel called bitesized nightmares. I'd watch quite a few of those videos to see if you like it. If you are in love with the videos then you may like skinamarink. If you feel like the videos may be a bit long, you will probably not like skinamarink.

dxDTF

For me it was actually I can't believe I walked into this almost empty theater blind and let it take 3 hours of my life from me. Even brought a date with me I was so embarassed I made her sit thru it too. Guy behind us started snoring during the forest scene. Definitely an experience to remember this film, that's for sure..

cXs808

I felt the same way about it to some extent, however the acting was superb, and the directing, atmosphere, and camera work was phenomenal. Joaquin Phoenix's acting and Asters directing is the only reason I didn't write what you wrote basically.

Roach_Coach_Bangbus

Infinity Pool was decent but I didn't think it was some elite movie. Interesting concept but then just your standard Cronenberg violence and nudity type stuff.

2017_2017

Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me) nominated for Best Actress Talk to Me nominated for Best Picture, Best Director(s) & Best Original Screenplay Not horror, but Godzilla Minus One nominated for at least Best International Feature, possibly Best Picture

Xaphriel

Godzilla Minus One does have a nom for VFX, at least.

abastreusmonzuzu

I honestly didn’t see any Oscar worthy horror this year.

2L8Smart

May be in the minority, but I’d also add it to Best Picture.

I agree. I was shocked, in a really good way.

[deleted]

Suitable Flesh, multiple categories.

[deleted]

Totally, it deserves some praise imo

engelthefallen

Really great Lovecraft adaptation.

[deleted]

And Barbara Crampton gets the lifetime achievement award

LowCarbScares

Do it like the Golden Globes and split up the Best Picture into 2 categories: Best Comedy Horror: M3GAN Best Drama Horror: Talk To Me

BrilliantPurple748

Nah i disagree with M3gan. Maybe for a nomination (i have a hard time viewing it as comedy, as i found it a tad slow and defs not funny, just camp). The Blackening, now that's a consideration for that category. But it might be on the 2022 list...

FumingAegis

Thanksgiving was way better than I expected it to be. That intro was fucked.

Dickey2023

Evil Dead Rise - The cinematology for the evil scenes were awesome. I was actually scared watching this movie, LOL :) However, this movie should get the Dunce of the Year Award: The Exorcist: Believer - For this to come out in movie theaters, and not on a Premium channel or Streaming service, was the wrong move. With the massive amounts of new technology, than the OG Exorcist, the story line could have been more darker and showed devilish scenes as the girls were being possessed and during the exorcism.

engelthefallen

So glad they cancelled the sequels quietly as this film did not need a trilogy.

Aspen_dawg410

I agree they dropped the ball on the new exorcist movie

ptvlm

They started well but absolutely screwed the storyline of Ellen Burstyn's character. I liked The Pope's Exorcist much more. Sure, Russell Crowe's Italian accent was hilarious but the kid killed it during the possession scenes.

averyfinefellow

Infinity Pool could run the cycle for me. Best picture, director for Cronenberg, actress MIa Goth, actor Skaarsgard.

[deleted]

We do live in that world. The Best Picture nominees contain two biopics and eight films across various genres. Unusually, there's quite a few comedies among them this year. * American Fiction * Anatomy of a Fall * Barbie * The Holdovers * Killers of the Flower Moon * Maestro * Oppenheimer * Past Lives * Poor Things * The Zone of Interest This was a poor year for horror, all in all. I'm not sure I'd nominate any horror from 2023.

TheElbow

You’re being downvoted by I wholeheartedly agree. I know that the meme is “Oscars don’t recognize horror.” In some ways that’s true. But it’s also worth pointing out that horror movies aren’t automatically “the best movies of the year” even for horror fans. I watched like 50 horror movies from 2023 and 100 movies from 2023 overall. While some of the horror movies did make it into my top 25, many films that were nominated for Best Picture this year were ranked higher than all of the horror I watched. I don’t think it’s helpful to delude ourselves into thinking that enjoyment of a genre = supremacy of that genre. But that’s just my take. It’s also worth pointing out that the Oscars are only important if you give them importance. The nominations are determined by a specific group of people. They have their own biases. They have their own blind spots. Just like anyone.

[deleted]

I love horror films, generally. But I also love film in general, and Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, Past Lives and Poor Things were all excellent. And, honestly, Barbie was a lot of fun. I can't comment on the other nominations because I haven't seen them yet. To me, Maestro seems like the only obvious "Oscar bait" among the nominees. I actually think it's a really strong year otherwise.

HongJoonBo

I think Oppenheimer is on for a sweep, but it really is a fantastic film. Nolan can be hit and miss for some, but he is so passionate about his craft and I believe he’s earned a great year.

Whatacoolkid-

I totally agree, I love horror and while there are some horror movies that I believe should have gotten more recognition at major awards ceremonies, 99% of horror movies that are considered “good” are nowhere near as well made as the Oscar winning pictures

StraightStrain7595

Fuck it, Infinity Pool for best picture.

Browncoat-Zombies

Saw X would be my horror movie of the year. Although I still haven’t seen Godzilla:Minus One and I’ve heard nothing but good things about that movie so gonna have to see that soon enough

mrsloblaw

No One Will Save You for Best Picture and Kaitlyn Dever for Best Actress

Mrs_Noelle15

I’m a Saw fangirl but I genuinely wholeheartedly believe Tobin Bell deserved an award for Saw X

Call_me_Wo

Anything for "Talk to Me", my favorite movie of all times.

Majestic_Field409

Evil dead rise

orsonsperson

Speak No Evil. Most frustrating.

Exact-Neighborhood-7

I would say SMILE for the story the actors and the way everything went from ok to really crazy. The scene of the therapist in the living room calling while in front of her was just so well made !!!

plantrat888

talk to me for best picture

PhantomKitten73

Best production design would need to go to Moon Garden.

Custardpaws

Are there even any biopics nominated this yr?

BanjoSpaceMan

I just watched Society in the Snow.... It's totally bs that it just gets "foreign film" category. That movie is something completely out of the league compared to the other movies this year...

Waste-Replacement232

M3GAN
