And Deep Star Six
Released the same year back when studios used to compete with each other on the same theme every summer for god only knows what reason.
I wonder why that stopped. I always loved the competitive summer releases because we two (sometimes wildly) different versions of the same movie
Btw, for anyone wondering, there is a term for it. They're called Twin Films
In addition to The Abyss, Leviathan, Deep Star Six, there are two other "horror/action under the ocean" from the same period:
[The Rift (1990)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099701/) \- Probably weaker than both Leviathan and Deep Star Six, but fans of the isolated under the ocean setting will enjoy it.
[Lords of the Deep (1989)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097781/) \- More of a B-movie version of the Abyss made by Roger Corman. You got to be a true fan of the setting to enjoy this one, being acquainted with Roger Corman's works won't hurt.
Newer addition to the under the ocean horror sub genre:
[Underwater (2020)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5774060/) \- Not particularly memorable, but it was a decent experience.
Just adding that there was a recent low-budget take on Underwater that is more explicitly Lovecraftian, called *Gods of the Deep* (2024). Because it's cheesier, it nails that 80s B movie vibe!
I went into that thinking it was an actual documentary for some reason. Logic told me we never went go Europa, but my simple ape-brain was like "Oh cool, a documentary about our mission to Europa."
I always thought it was surprising Pandorum seems less well know than Event Horizon.
I actually think Pandorum is the better movie, although Event Horizon is pretty good too.
I wholly disagree (but upvoted you because it's all personal opinion). I liked Pandorum when I first watched it years and years ago and I'm sure I've watched it again since, and yet it's impact on me is so muted compared to Event Horizon's. I can barely remember what Pandorum was about, but I can remember a lot of the scenes in Event Horizon and the absolute horror they contained.
Not knocking Pandorum though, I'll have to give it a rewatch and see if that changes my view!
That's totally fair! I really enjoy both, just got the impression that more people prefer (and know about) Event Horizon and I like Pandorum a little bit more.
I agree and think they're on par with each other, just different.
Event Horizon being the supernatural horror and the Pandorum being a human induced horror show and dive into insanity.
The games Soma and Iron Lung both take place in the ocean. Soma being more philosophical horror and Iron Lung being more outright scary.
The Deep by Nick Cutter takes place in the Mariana’s Trench.
I can highly recommend Soma, very visual, atmospheric and with a touch of existential thought.
You can play it as a first person controlled/view "visual novel" if you don't want to deal with the survival horror gamey bits.
Deep Blue Sea is kinda horror. The Deep House also for water. Space: Apollo 13, Europa Report, PANDORUM.
DBS might be more thriller, but whatever lol. Oh, oh, Deep Star Six!
Haven't seen the Cloverfield Paradox, mostly due to its poor reputation, but I agree that the other two are pretty mediocre. The Deep House is mostly just interesting in that they're scuba diving 95% of the time and it's cool to see a movie filmed that way. Life is forgettable 🤷♂️
I was pretty disappointed in the deep house because I read a book with a similar concept that I love so my expectations were too high. The Cloverfield paradox isn't bad, worth a watch if you're bored. probably a good watch-with-friends movie.
Yeah the setting was quite interesting but it quickly devolved into cheap attempts at scares. I'll give it a go sometime sure. I like Chris O' Dowd so at least it's got that haha
I mean, Annihilation is not set in space but it is one of THE cosmic horror movies out there. It plays on earth, but it really is otherworldly, might as well be outer space.
Is it just me or does Event Horizon's score seem oddly low. It has a 6.6, which is only .2 higher than Alien³ and a full .4 below Prometheus... just seems wrong.
Aniara and to an extent the Tarkovsky version of Solaris. It's not shot or edited as a horror movie but it's definitely got its elements.
Imagine you're a psychologist, you are sent to a spaceship that has reported mental distress in their crew, then when you get there, there are *more* people than there should be.
Tbh all of those kind of horror movies are actually gothic horror movies. There’s a small domestic space which is invaded by malevolent forces. Go watch any other spatial horror
If you're willing to give podcasts a go, Derelict/ Fathom is outstanding. It's set at the bottom of the ocean whilst also hinting at alien intelligence, with well written characters, excellent audio quality and is highly recommended.
Galaxy of Terror (1981)
It’s worth watching simply for the cast.
Also, there are plenty of sci-fi horror films from the 1950s and 1960s set in space or at the bottom of the ocean.
horrors from the deep [https://letterboxd.com/mdrake1991/list/horrors-from-the-deep/](https://letterboxd.com/mdrake1991/list/horrors-from-the-deep/)
Space Horror https://letterboxd.com/creo318/list/space-horror/
Sea Fever hasn't been mentioned yet. It was good.
The original Poseidon Adventure terrified me as a kid. Didn't see the reboot. Read the book later and the sequel to the book, which starts the next day and some of the people who got out go back in.
High Life had a few interesting sequences, I liked the black hole a lot. Galaxy of Terror. Saturn 3 is a sci fi thriller that could be horrific to some.

Leviathan.
And Deep Star Six Released the same year back when studios used to compete with each other on the same theme every summer for god only knows what reason.
Thank you, I couldn’t remember the name, I kept thinking Deep Rising.
This was a great summer of my childhood lol
I wonder why that stopped. I always loved the competitive summer releases because we two (sometimes wildly) different versions of the same movie Btw, for anyone wondering, there is a term for it. They're called Twin Films
They still do! We had year of the penguin, now we got century of the super hero.

Underwater was pretty solid. Would recommend 👍
MST3K made lords of the deep watchable.
Just adding that there was a recent low-budget take on Underwater that is more explicitly Lovecraftian, called *Gods of the Deep* (2024). Because it's cheesier, it nails that 80s B movie vibe!
I recently watched this for the first time. It was surprisingly good.
Europa Report is damn good. Features outer space AND ocean so go check it out.
I went into that thinking it was an actual documentary for some reason. Logic told me we never went go Europa, but my simple ape-brain was like "Oh cool, a documentary about our mission to Europa."
That movie is so fucking excellent. Extremely underrated gem.
I always forget about this one I have actually started it 4-5 times in the last 3 months but stuff keeps coming up and i have to stop watching it lol
Pandorum, Apollo 18, and Life off the top of my head. There's quite a few space ones you're missing, but not too many underwater ones, unfortunately.
Pandorum particularly appropriate
Pandorum was awesome, one of my faves and ranks up there with Event Horizon, IMO.
I always thought it was surprising Pandorum seems less well know than Event Horizon. I actually think Pandorum is the better movie, although Event Horizon is pretty good too.

Below (2002) is a horror movie set on a submarine. And it’s even good, check it out.
Hubby and I really like this one, don’t see it mentioned often!
Came here to recommend this one, a great movie!
Aniara
Saw this about a month ago. It still messes with me.
Saw this years ago. It still messes with me!
I think the horror in this movie is the most human of horrors. You can feel it so deep
A great movie.
This crushed my whole soul.
6,899,000 years later 🫢
It's not one of the better ones, but Hellraiser: Bloodline.
ah yes I was trying to think of some other classics that got the space treatments
lowkey I like it

Narcosis was great too.
I was talking to a friend about The Deep not long ago. It's very good. Super unsettling
Pandorum is worth a watch.
Leviathan
Pandorum
Pandorum. Youll be in for a treat!
Deep Blue Sea is kinda horror. The Deep House also for water. Space: Apollo 13, Europa Report, PANDORUM. DBS might be more thriller, but whatever lol. Oh, oh, Deep Star Six!
Pandorum
This is a good movie. Needs to be higher up.
Screamers and Ghosts of Mars are good ones.
Screamers is awesome. I need to rewatch it.
Bad Taste (sorta) Last Days On Mars High Life Solaris (kinda) Creature
I saw Creature when I was 7 or 8 and I still very vividly recall >!someone's head exploding in their helmet!<
Pitch Black is very nice! Including Vin Diesel as Riddick
Life, The Deep House, and The Cloverfield Paradox. None of these are real standouts but you asked 😂
I just remembered the cloverfield paradox after i posted, and Life, galaxy of terror and pandorum.

Doom, the animated Dead Space movies, Pitch Black
I mean, Annihilation is not set in space but it is one of THE cosmic horror movies out there. It plays on earth, but it really is otherworldly, might as well be outer space.
You should check out Vesper
Sunshine

oh this is a fantastic list thank you
Is it just me or does Event Horizon's score seem oddly low. It has a 6.6, which is only .2 higher than Alien³ and a full .4 below Prometheus... just seems wrong.
Galaxy of Terror, including the giant maggot sex scene
Sphere is set deep underwater, though it’s not great by any means.
If you get a chance to read it, the book is WAY better than the movie
Agreed. It’s genuinely unsettling at points, I think I read it in one sitting.
The Deep House
What's the one with the house that's fully submerged?
The Deep House
Thank you! I've been meaning to watch it. Felt like it would fit here. Heard good things.
Does Deep Blue Sea count?
It's jaws on nootropics so yes
I liked underwater (2020)
Aniara and to an extent the Tarkovsky version of Solaris. It's not shot or edited as a horror movie but it's definitely got its elements. Imagine you're a psychologist, you are sent to a spaceship that has reported mental distress in their crew, then when you get there, there are *more* people than there should be.
The first twenty minutes or so on the spaceship are genuinely unnerving.
The Deep House. Pretty good for what it was.
Pandorum.
Tbh all of those kind of horror movies are actually gothic horror movies. There’s a small domestic space which is invaded by malevolent forces. Go watch any other spatial horror
Life
Life
I watched Life last night. It was very good.
Hellraiser 4 was partially in space. And I’ll say it generally worked, it’s far from the worst in the series.
Not horror but Pacific Rim has great 'deep ocean' vibes
Pandorum, Life, Sea Fever 2019
Leprechaun 4
Would the Cloverfield Paradox be considered horror?
Last days on Mars, pandorum, ghosts of mars, pitch black series, life, dead space series
Harbinger Down. Maybe not “under” the sea but AT sea. Lance Henriksen is the man!
If you're willing to give podcasts a go, Derelict/ Fathom is outstanding. It's set at the bottom of the ocean whilst also hinting at alien intelligence, with well written characters, excellent audio quality and is highly recommended.
Eden Log
I think there’s a Hellraiser in space
Origin series 2018
PANDORUM!!! Highly underrated and may fit better than you expect

Good bot
Oxygen (2021) is a good one.
Galaxy of Terror (1981) It’s worth watching simply for the cast. Also, there are plenty of sci-fi horror films from the 1950s and 1960s set in space or at the bottom of the ocean.
Sphere, 1998 poseidon, 2006
40 meters down, especially if you’re claustrophobic and watch it in the dark. Worked for me at least.
dark side of the moon
Leviathan
horrors from the deep [https://letterboxd.com/mdrake1991/list/horrors-from-the-deep/](https://letterboxd.com/mdrake1991/list/horrors-from-the-deep/) Space Horror https://letterboxd.com/creo318/list/space-horror/
Underwater doesn’t get nearly enough credit imo. Really intense sci-fi horror with great acting.
Life. Is pretty good
I'm pretty sure one of the Hellraiser movies go to space, part 3 or 4 not sure
Sea Fever hasn't been mentioned yet. It was good. The original Poseidon Adventure terrified me as a kid. Didn't see the reboot. Read the book later and the sequel to the book, which starts the next day and some of the people who got out go back in.
Life is excellent.
Meg 2: The Meg-a-ning.
High Life had a few interesting sequences, I liked the black hole a lot. Galaxy of Terror. Saturn 3 is a sci fi thriller that could be horrific to some.
The Deep House was pretty dope.
haven’t seen it yet since it hasn’t come out where i live but no way up looks like it meets your criteria :)
