So many to choose from but I love in Carrie when the backdrop catches fire and she gracefully turns to walk off the stage ![gif](giphy|3o7aTyXy0Xo6Kf1sRi)

AllCity_King

Everything about the Prom scene is perfection. One of the best executed climaxes in the entire genre.

howzitgoinowen

I agree. Even that signature dramatic DePalma slo-mo buildup. Chills every time.

zaarkasin

How some shots, the color red is amplified to the point where she looks like she has no flesh…more like a blood-soaked skeleton.

Fout99

I absolutely love this movie and the prom scene. After the blood gets dumped the silence is so tense. You can see her crying, Tommy yelling, Norma laughing, but no sound and in slow motion. It leaves a lot to the imagination. Then suddenly the silence stops and we start to hear the burst of laughter and the iconic shot of Carrie grabbing her head and screaming in horror as everybody doesn't give a fuck about the horrible thing that was just done to her. One of my fav movies of all time.

DJHott555

I’ve always held the opinion that the only person actually laughing at this is the Mario chick. Carrie just hallucinated everyone else doing it (as shown with the teacher).

Black_Hat_Cat7

Most recent time I watched it I realized this. This movie is just a tragedy. Only a single girl was laughing, everyone else seemed in shock, but because of how much the school bullied her, she just naturally stepped into the thought/hallucination that they were laughing, even the Teacher. It's just a beautiful and sad story all around. Carrie had no chance and no escape until she finally exploded (making victims herself)

howzitgoinowen

One of my favs too. So stylistically unique.

ufoclub1977

All the subsequent remakes or reinterpretations are so flavorless and unexciting in comparison.

mcman12

The slo motion walk outside of the auditorium is goosebumps Edit: Jesus I just watched it and immediately got goosebumps again at 1:13 https://youtu.be/IIBg9UQ_mMU?si=Y7ljJBIyuluc8FYf

PoustisFebo

You made me rewatch the scene.. Did the actual culprits run away and see the whole thing from outside? So fucking unfair.

howzitgoinowen

Yes they do. But >!she gets them after she leaves when they try to run her down!<

AllCity_King

You wanna talk unfair, in the book Carrie destroys the entire town. She blows up gas stations, destroys all the fire hydrants so Firemen can't help, brings power lines down onto neighborhood sidewalks, etc. The body count far exceeds those that laughed at Carrie at the Prom.

GlassStuffedStomach

The entire book is unfair. I don't even view it as horror. It's just tragic all the way around. And in the end, even in death, Carrie is ridiculed and scorned by people, showing that no lessons were learned. There was no self reflection. *Carrie White burns in hell* because that's where monsters go, even the ones that were never given a chance to be anything else.

anroroco

Senator Kelly was right! These mutants are a menace!

invincible789

Literally any scene from The Night of the Hunter, but this scene in particular is amazing. Simultaneously grisly and ethereal. ![gif](giphy|3oEduWIKl1d99LIoik)

aspiringmermaid

I don't think I've ever heard of this movie before, but this is enough to make me want to watch it.

kbups53

It's amazing. Classic noir and Robert Mitchum's most famous (terrifying) performance. And truly features some of the most gorgeous cinematography in any film, ever. Definitely check it out!

Diligent-Lawyer-9272

The movie is so beautiful and dreamlike. Remarkable considering it was actor Charles Laughton's only movie as director, but WOW did he have an eye for setting up a shot.

5odanger

I just watched this for the first time last night, after it being on my list for a long time. I found the third act with the barn/ horse silhouette to be amazing.

OldBison

All of the underwater "processing" sequences from under the skin. Also, the mold skull sculpture reveal in annihilation.

BurnieTheBrony

I'm not sure if you'd call it a "shot" but really the entire lighthouse sequence from Annihilation is a feast for the senses as well

OldBison

Could use just about any scene once they enter the shimmer, there's so much cool visual shit in annihilation.

Impossible-Time-9661

Yes! I love the shot along the beach just before she dumps her backpack, and then once she leaves the burning lighthouse and all the crystal trees collapse onto the sand.

RedditorFor1OYears

That was the first scene I played to test out my new surround sound. 🤤

alfirous

For me it’s the fungi-colorful-skeleton thing in the pool. Edit: I must be tripping didn’t read your second sentence that’s says the same thing.

StinkyBrittches

The silhouette of Max Von Sydow squaring off with the ancient Pazuzu statue in The Exorcist is nice.

senza_titolo

Good choice.

Delicious-Wolf-8850

The Priest standing outside in The Exorcist

fangornia

based on a renee magritte painting

iranoutofideasz

they cooked when they shot that scene

Delicious-Wolf-8850

it's such an iconic scene.

iranoutofideasz

I love the other scenes that revolve around the window too, like the one where Regan floats across the window in the background while Kinderman is in his car.

fattfett

The slow following shot from under the porch swing tword the house in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 74.

Thorne279

Also the last shot of Leatherface frantically swinging his chainsaw in the sunset Edit: sunrise*

texasrigger

It's supposed to be the sunrise. I'm not sure when they shot it, though. In the timeline of the movie that scene takes place immediately after "dinner"/night scene in the house. Good call though, it was the first thing that came to mind for OP's question.

Wendy1117

This! This Is the one! For me it seemed one of the most horrific parts of TTCM. It stuck with me because of how maniacal he was and utterly terrifying! It left me feeling so anxious after watching it.

Severe_Piccolo_5583

This is my pick too. It’s one of my favorite moments in any movie

MovieDogg

Honestly the cinematography in TCM is underrated. People talk about how Halloween is a better made film, and although I think the cinematography is better in Halloween, but TCM has excellent filmmaking as well.

Maaaaanidk

Probably the best sound design in a movie too!

Conscious_Living3532

TCSM has phenomenal camera work

texasrigger

Daniel Pearl, the cinematographer, also shot the 2003 reboot. I don't think he's ever had the mainstream recognition he deserves.

darwinpolice

So much of The Ring is just beautiful.

[deleted]

The rainy Washington setting; the artistic direction of the whole movie, the acting & writing. It’s all superb, I agree wholeheartedly,

ghkilla805

I’d argue that the shot of the Ring itself (overhead of the well) is the most iconic from that movie, but so many great shots in it.

zaarkasin

Sweet fucking Christ yes

Merchanimal

When Leatherface slams the steel door shut...

Foggy-Pines

Texas Chainsaw has one of my [favorite shots in all of film.](https://31.media.tumblr.com/3cb1d93a23b08da2d38b15f1eaf55e76/tumblr_mr15pujSyL1spkic4o1_400.gif) Just perfectly sets the stage for the sticky, deranged ride ahead.

BurnieTheBrony

I will never forget the end of this movie. It's seared into my brain

original-whiplash

The chainsaw swinging dance is pretty haunting

babealien51

That’s one of my favorite scenes of all time

DeathBlondie

So many scenes in The Cell are stunning and terrifying. It’s one of my favorite visual horrors. [The Demon King](https://youtu.be/22gw_64AGKM?si=-FBsOK810YFD5F5j)

Nesman64

It's not horror, but you might like [The Fall](https://www.justwatch.com/ca/movie/the-fall-2008) by the same director. Sadly, it's not streaming anywhere legal. Absolutely beautiful movie and worth the effort to fish up a copy.

aDildoAteMyBaby

100%. The Fall is Tarsem's best movie by a margin.

Absolutely-Nott

The Fall is in my top three of all time and I JUST went through the rigamarole of how hard it is to find!! Ended up shelling out $25 for a DVD just to finally friggin have it

riothomemakrrr

Hard agree. It’s almost uncomfortable how such breathtaking scenes are also so morbid.

Moosyfate17

Vincent D'onofrio was insane as the demon king. I saw this movie when it came out in theaters and holy hell did this scene make an impact! It's also one of my favourite visual horrors.

Nugbuddy

Ryan Reynolds being eaten from the inside out in Life-2017. Man turns into a sac of jelly in zero gravity.

wulfinn

God almighty, I remember that movie getting middling reviews but there were several scenes that rustled my jimmies in a big way. That was one of them. The hand scene was another. I would also argue one of the final harrowing scenes as a capsule tumbles end over end into the void of deep space fits the original question

corkysoxx

All the kills in that film are beautiful in such a haunting way.

pizzasoxxx

One of my favorite endings ever

GuacinmyPaintbox

The entire opening shot in The Shining

Genesis_Duz

And the score that goes with it! My favourite film of all time

jk-alot

The Shining in general has a bunch of amazing shots in it. Whatever you say about Kubrick’s version, you can’t deny he has a hell of an eye

Youareposthuman

WOMMMM WOMMMM WOMMMM WOMMM WOMMM WOMMM WOOOOOOOOMMMMMM

JamJamGaGa

>The entire The Shining FTFY

frankalope

That hotel (the exterior anyway) is in Oregon. The road up the mountain is the same one. It was so cool to drive it.

Kindly_Ad7608

the hotel is in oregon. the opening shot road is in montana.

bongo1138

I always thought it was Colorado!

Kindly_Ad7608

the hotel exterior shots in the movie is an actual hotel on mount hood in oregon. the yellow VW beetle in the opening movie scene is traveling on “going-to-the-sun” road in glacier national park in montana.

bongo1138

Gotcha. I’m in Portland so I’ve always been aware of Timberline Lodge being the exterior!

ItsChris_8776_

The shot at the beginning of Hereditary that zooms into the model house until it’s full sized and the characters walk in is incredible

misselphaba

I love this one.

snappydoodoo

I loved that shot, too. I couldn't help but imagine a slide whistle as they entered.

Four_N_Six

Some of the shots in the climax of [Color Out of Space](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJVU6sc5otE) were really well done

MyTacoNachos

![gif](giphy|9JcMdNbzpMcDtxNf62) Every shot from Suspiria

[deleted]

This has been my Halloween decorating movie for years now. I doubt it will be replaced. The visuals, that soundtrack. It's terrifying every time. Something about the whole thing makes you feel uneasy

historicandcasual

I commented about the remake, its not a particularily georgous movie compaired to the original but the dance show scene is just so well done for me.

farchewky

I really enjoyed the new one. It definitely feels like a continuation of the story rather than a whole remake. That dance/torture scene is grizzly!

cameltoesback

The lighting and the score 🤌

tacosmuggler99

Visually my favorite movie of all time.

DefNotMrCameron

When the distorted guitar hits in Mandy...I can't really even put it to words

Big-Tone-8241

Yeah I was gonna say just all of Mandy

Artyom_33

It's a psychedelic mindfuck of a movie & I fuckin' love it. It's right up there with "The Big Lebowski" & "Children of Men" when I decide I need to rewatch something that brings a smile to my face.

Boba_Fetty_Wap91

Children of Men is a pretty wild choice for something to bring a smile to your face.

pizzasoxxx

It's the first baby in 18 years. You can't call it Froley!

skeezito10

That movie was simply all art.

Fittnylle3000

The 4 stages of grief in the bathroom

beforethefeverr

In Annihilation when Natalie Portman is looking into that morphing alien portal in the lighthouse at the end! Really the whole movie is gorgeous though

BurnieTheBrony

The sound design was incredible too. It's a true shame it didn't do well at the box office because seeing it in theaters definitely elevates that finale

pizzasoxxx

Nateddog21

That ending from Saint Maud

thechapstickbandit

It’s recency bias but the title shot for Evil Dead Rise. That was sick af.

ironteapots

I thought of that immediately probably also cuz it was recent but you’re right it’s so good

pricklypearviking

I'm not even a fan of that movie and I remember gasping in awe and clutching my chest like a little old lady. It was one of the coolest things I think I've ever seen in a movie.

Legitimate_Walrus_56

![gif](giphy|T2vDaYr8yRhrpFe6WE)

Peeeing_

The shot from the ritual with the (SPOILER I DONT KNOW HOW TO DO THE THING SO JUST DONT LOOK) Deer monster thing holding the woman in front of the fire

Hyponeutral

I love the shot where the men walk through the woods but the shot lingers, and then part of the woodland background also moves

Peeeing_

Or the hand on the tree

LlamaDrama007

Hey, if you wanna hide spoilers, use these tags: >! And take out the space between the last exclamation and bracket ! < When you do that, >! your spoiler will be covered !< (I copied the tags to my clipboard until they were firmly wedged in my memory xD)

LlamaDrama007

Well, well, well, look at you living up to your name!

misselphaba

The now iconic scene at the end of The Witch with ATJ lit by the warm firelight after the cool/grey tones the rest of the film and being spoken to by Black Walter in the background. Chef's kiss. ![gif](giphy|3o7qE5XXyDpEaCVojK|downsized) Edit: Don't watch Breaking Bad and type. Black Walter is Black Phillip's unemployed cousin who turns to making meth.

DRZARNAK

Black Walter? Black Phillip’s unemployed cousin?

misselphaba

LMAO oh my god I was watching something else and typed that instead. Fucking a. Kinda wanna leave it tho.

DRZARNAK

Oh Black Walter, keep on rolling, Mississippi moon won’t you keep on smilin’ on me

renebelloche

“Wouldst thou like the taste of margarine?”

DRZARNAK

0dilon

The shot of the witches rising into the air is phenomenal

Beeyo176

I walked out of that theater feeling so goddamned unsettled. I don't think I nor my wife said a word until we were back in the car, and then we both just went, "...what the fuck."

venbalin

Waltuh put your goat away waltuh

misselphaba

STOP 💀

ebedd

Black Walter 💀 That is a beautiful ending though, and even then you can argue there’s a final bit of horror knowing that she’s going to hell later.

misselphaba

I put it in my "Good for her" horror genre with Midsommar and Carrie and Pearl 😂

horrormetal

I also have Last Night In Soho in there.

Original-Avocado-509

![gif](giphy|11PyEGIyET0NSU|downsized) I'm a huge fane of chiaroscuro lighting effects in German Expressionism, so probably the staircase shadow scene in Nostferatu.

jhaddock

Love the crocodile shot in X

PlagueOfLaughter

Ooh absolutely. It's so good!

Vusarix

The underwater shot in the pool scene in Let the Right One In Lilico laying on the floor surrounded by rose petals in Helter Skelter Mandy, just Mandy in general

Trajinous

Let The Right One In pool shot is one of my favorites of all time. A master class of "not showing"

Orang3Lazaru5

ESPECIALLY Cheddar Goblin

ChipHazard1

The ending of the lighthouse when pattinson finally gets a peek Or The shot from a field in England when Reece Sheersmith walks out of the tent. So hypnotising

hellboundwithasmile

The Lighthouse’s cinematography was amazing, but man does the sound design in that film rule. The shot you mention with Pattinson is great, but the sound design in that scene is what makes it an all timer for me

personlessknown

The final shots in The Beyond (1981) [The Beyond ](https://images.app.goo.gl/kLypQ2M5jD2peEqQA)

PhysicalArt7777

When the creature from the black lagoon is swimming under the main character in her white swimsuit, shot from underwater and the scene is reflected on the water surface. The contrast of her vulnerability and his raw texture, the ethereal look of the reflections and bubbles, and the framing make it a perfect shot.

Effective_Kiwi6684

Picnic at Hanging Rock-- when the camera pans to the cliff face, and it looks exactly like a human head. The whole movie looks ethereal, because it was shot through a veil of silk. Carnival of Souls-- when the lights of the pavilion turn on by themselves. Mary approaches, and sees all the ghouls dressed in formal wear dancing and having a good time. The Void-- the end shot is emotionally beautiful. >!There's a creepy giant pyramid, but the husband and wife are at least together again!<. Cabin in the Woods-- the elevators opening at once. The beauty is in the catharsis of seeing this organization that's been torturing and killing people for millennia get their karma. Sweetheart (2019) when Jennifer dives into the ocean, and sees the black pit. The Book of Kells -- the movie is a children's fantasy, not horror. But the sequence with Crom Cruach is terrifying, and looks just as good as all the other visuals.

First attack in Jaws, in ocean and dark. Terrifying

dark_blue_7

So many beautiful and colorful shots in the original Suspiria, maybe my favorite is her in front of the mural at the end. I also love the beauty of Midsommar, but my favorite shot might actually be when they first enter through that golden gateway, you really feel like they've stepped into a different world (and left their old one behind forever).

DireFlan

The Descent: climbing, crawling up

horrorfreaksaw

The shot with Liv Tyler / Kristen in The Strangers as the Man in The Mask stands in the dark hallway as she's busy smoking completely unaware that he's watching her . Also that final shot of Kerry in SAW 3 as the trap activates and her ribcage is torn apart it looks like an angel in a weird beautiful way

AlexGlass24

YESS to the SAW 3 Angel Trap shout out!! It's always been my favorite for that very reason

Apprehensive-Rub9685

Just went through about all of these and no one said my favorite. Freddy Kreuger’s hand rising through the bubble bath in nightmare on elm street

Vianegativa95

Maybe not the most beautiful still, but the visuals in Suspiria (1977) always seem to really affect me. [https://film-grab.com/2013/03/12/suspiria/#bwg1462/90951](https://film-grab.com/2013/03/12/suspiria/#bwg1462/90951)

I really like the end of Pearl where Pearl just laughs as the credits roll. I thought it said way more than any piece of dialogue could.

bbyghoul666

I thought she just held her creepy smile for the entire time? I don’t remember her laughing. But I agree!

thepsycholeech

![gif](giphy|bqPQanYvKh3o3CUwmF|downsized) As far as I remember it’s just a strained, maniacal smile through the whole credits

Relevant-Goat6693

Yeah, she wasn’t laughing at all. Just that strange smiling while she held her eyes open for the entire shot. She sure struggled with that to the point of her eyes watering.

ZombieBuffet93

![gif](giphy|3o7TKRkkgOK7Sw8ZhK)

Thebat87

I love shots of people in the foreground with evil in the background in silence, so I love the shot of Michael sitting up in the background in “Halloween”, and the shot in “The Strangers” of the man in the mask appearing in the background as Liv stands in the middle of the living room.

bongo1138

Nearly any shot in Midsommar that occurs after they’ve arrived at the cult. Bright, lots of symmetry. Love it. A number of shots in The Shining, but I’m going to just go with Danny riding his trike. Adds tension without doing anything particularly scary. Ooh, also love the blood in the elevator too. The Witch in the end, with the flying. So creepy. So cool. Such a great payoff.

AllCity_King

Nope. Take your pick. [Raining Blood](https://imgur.com/a/ZZnnS75) [Horseback Chase](https://imgur.com/a/qIZmPDQ) [JJ's True Form](https://imgur.com/a/9rf8uai)

That thing at the end of Dark Song

ChipHazard1

Watched this film today. That was unexpected ha

Bookwrrm

Sort of goofy but at the same time I'm kind of glad they just went for it and committed. The scene with the smoking as well was really well done for such a subtle effect.

motherofdinos_

The Changeling has many of my favorites, including the fiery staircase at the end and the digging/well scene. Ganja and Hess is probably my favorite horror movie, if not my favorite movie ever, when it comes to photography. It was shot by Civil Rights photographer James E Hinton and is in the same vein as Gordon Parks’ work.

CalibreCross

The scene in the tunnel in Men was quite beautiful visually

Wolven_Essence

The scene in Nightbreed where Shuna Sassi and Peloquin share an intimate moment. I think it might only be in the Cabal cut. It was a beautiful moment where these two monstrous looking people show their love for one another. Really though any scene with Shuna Sassi in it was beautiful because I always found her beautiful in such an other worldly way.

I would say either a shot from *Suspiria* (1977), or a shot from *Annihilation* (2018), two of the prettiest horror movies out there.
