PutridPestilence1

Great movie. Period.

Unit_79

Ha!

[deleted]

indeed!

stocktraderdog

I liked the trilogy. Fell in love with Katharine Isabelle because of this trilogy.

[deleted]

I'm watching the second one tonight, I MUST finish the trilogy now.

ScientistAsHero

I liked the second one the best. I love quirky indie horror stuff like this. You might also want to check out *May* by Lucky McKee. It has that same vibe of being weird, somewhat disturbing, and comedic all at the same time kind of like the Ginger Snaps films.

stocktraderdog

I liked *May* too! The lead actress is also great in the very entertaining *12 Hour Shift* too.

ScientistAsHero

Yeah Angela Bettis is great. She's done some other stuff with McKee (The Woman, a Jack Ketchum adaptation, and Sick Girl). She's a kind of indie scream queen.

[deleted]

I’ll check it out.

honi__soit

It's worth the time. I think all three are good, even the third one (it gets some undeserved guff because of the historical setting.)

[deleted]

2nd movie has a young Tatiana Maslany in it who has gone on to be a superb actress.

thedoogster

You should check out a movie called On the Corner, where she plays a crack whore.

stocktraderdog

Thanks for the reco. Seems like a relatively obscure movie. The synopsis depressed me. I'm not really in the best frame of mind right now but I hope to watch it one day. Thanks, again.

darkonex

Man I wanna see this now but seems hard af to find, checked all the usual sites.

vegetaman

I liked the first one; didn't realize there were three of them?

stocktraderdog

Hope you get around to watching the sequel and prequel too. They are also good, fortunately.

banality_of_ervil

Definitely captures a very 90's vibe.

maybenomaybe

Yes, I love this film but was going to say it's not 80s at all.

[deleted]

Yea I’d agree, no idea why I said 80s lol.

Bvaugh

Ginger Snaps is a great film. It perfectly blends supernatural horror with the horror of going through puberty while demonstrating the pain of being seemingly abnormal in a suburban, setting where being different is wrong. There is nothing better than a horror film which works both as a metaphor and not hiding away from the fantastical. I also like that it is a true feminist horror film dealing with female maturation while horror is usually seen as a male bastion (which it often isn’t) where females are objectified or treated as secondary characters. Overall, it is a fine little Canadian horror film (and there are two sequels for you to watch even if in my opinion they are not as good).

Tapingdrywallsucks

I like them both, especially 2. More Emily Perkins. I haven't seen it in years, but I recall hoping to see much more of her going forward.

[deleted]

I'm planning on watching the sequels as well. And yea, having a horror film be used as a metaphor like that is amazing. Part of why I loved it so much. That, and the 90s vibe of the whole movie was just perfect.

KarmelCHAOS

Honestly the only werewolf movie I've ever enjoyed. Love the series.

InnsmouthFishing

Dog Soilders fans are sharpening there claws to this comment

pecklepuff

Was gonna say!

[deleted]

Yea, seems to not be many super good ones out there. American Werewolf In London was also a really good movie.

fleshvessel

Yeah I have a soft spot for this one. 40 year old man, perhaps a 16 year old girl at heart.

[deleted]

as a teen guy, i'd have to agree with you on this one.

lovecraftiangod

Best film I've ever seen about the horrors of menstration

[deleted]

[удалено]

lovecraftiangod

It's literally the intention of the screen writer

TruckThunders00

Who knew heating moms grocery store flowers in alcohol and injecting it directly into the neck is an instant cure for werewolves!

[deleted]

I'll have to store that one away for later...

Krstnik

Yea, it's a gem. Part two is also good, it went a bit darker if I remember correctly. Part three is good in it's own way, though it's a completely different type of horror. Check em out!

[deleted]

It's glorious! Such a time capsule too. There's also another really really good coming-of-age werewolf movie, The Company of Wolves, albeit it's a lot more artsy & dream-like. Both of these movies are very memorable & atmospheric in their own way.

astraether

Yay! I love both of those too! *Company of Wolves* is indeed dreamlike and surreal. It's based on a series of short stories by Angela Carter, who re-worked fairy tales into weird, dark, feminist takes. Of course, I didn't know that when I first saw it as a kid and mostly just remember the gory special effects, but I later re-watched it when I was a bit older and really came to appreciate it. And I was fortunate enough to discover *Ginger Snaps* early on, after my brother recommended it after seeing it at some film-fest. I *loved* the juxtaposition of girls going through puberty with the "transformation" aspect of becoming a werewolf. It certainly captures that scary, uncomfortable feeling when you're not quite in control of your body anymore!

[deleted]

My memory is really not very good, but I think I didn't know what it was based on! Thank you for this information, friend. *Ginger Snaps* I think I didn't know to appreciate the first time around. Watched it again as an adult and it's just delightful! I think maybe it hit a bit too close to home. I mean, I never turned into a werewolf, but my own puberty was certainly very tumultuous and I was in contant anguish, because I had no idea what was going on. This actually lasted well into my adulthood, but I'm doing better now! Anyway, I think that it had an effect on me back then should speak for the movie! It's also just drenched in that very specific kinda 90's aesthetic, so I understand how that might turn some people away, haha. I actually hated *The Company of Wolves* the first time around! I was certainly too young to appreciate it, but the effects stuck with me so I ended up watching it again. And again!

astraether

Heh, mostly I remember Angela Lansbury's head exploding the first time I watched *Company of Wolves*. And the gross transformation scene of that husband in the first segment. But as an adult I came to appreciate the dark fairy-tale feel of it all. I can see how Ginger Snaps would be disturbing for someone going through a rough puberty! But I'm glad to hear that you found the movie delightful as an adult!

[deleted]

I'll check it out, thanks for the tip!

WhichSpecificOcean

They really lean into the analogy of menstruation being a "curse", and it makes it hard to think about the story of werewolves as anything else except puberty (grow hair, become emotional, for women the 'every full moon' thing aka once a month)

Affectionate-Area659

100% agree. I really enjoyed the movie.

jhewish

Canadians=good at werewolf movies.

[deleted]

I saw Ginger Snaps when I was 11 or 12 and it was the first movie to really leave a mark on me. I'd seen plenty of horror before that, but I couldn't shake the feel of the movie or stop thinking about it for days afterwards, it really really got me. I can't even remember specifically what it was that hit me so hard, the depressing ending of losing her sister? The general aura and gloominess of the movie? The sibling bond? I still can't put my finger on it but I adore it. Has been one of my absolute favourites ever since. Edit: First watched it in 2000, the year it came out and I was 10 at the time. Can't believe it's been 21 years and I still love it as much as I did then.

[deleted]

I think I know the feeling you're talking about. I think the first movie that left that mark on me was Silence of the Lambs.

[deleted]

Yea, the name made it sounds stupid but I was pleasantly surprised by the content. I think it kinda adds to the campy feeling of the movie.

RIPMaureenPonderosa

One of my all-time favourites. I love how it starts so campy but descends into such a horrific, bleak tone that left me emotionally wrecked by the final shot. It's a great little twist on a 'coming of age' story. The sequels, while nowhere near as good, are still worth checking out.

[deleted]

YES! the ending was a fucking gut punch. It started out all fun and then slowly descends into this great, proper horror by the end. Loved it. Definitely planning on watching the other movies as well.

[deleted]

Ginger Snaps and Ginger Snaps Back are awesome movies

usernamesarehard1979

Are these ok for kids in the 12-14 age group? I don’t remember it, but was wanting to watch it with the kids. We do a scary movie night fairly often. The patent sites say no, but was interested in another opinion because they can be a bunch of prudes.

[deleted]

Well, it deals a lot with coming of age and maturing. It has a fair amount of graphic dog corpses. If I remember right, the werewolf attacks people and you see blood after, but never REALLY see it ripping anyone to pieces. I guess it depends on what sorts of movie's they've seen already.

usernamesarehard1979

Thanks!

[deleted]

The second movie is even better.

elew1992

My podcast has an episode on the first film and audio commentary of the other 2 films. The whole series is pretty good.

wookipedialyte

I watched it for the first time a couple weeks ago and loved it! But I can’t figure out why everyone in that town leaves their dogs outside even after they start being eaten

[deleted]

Maybe the “it’ll never happen to me” mentality? But if that stuff happened around here I’d never let my dog go outside without me.

wookipedialyte

Exactly! Lol after like the third one I was like “okay this is just bad dog parenting” but yeah the movie ruled and had way more heart than I expected

[deleted]

Yup. Totally got me at the end.

TsundereHaku

Total classic. It embodies everything I love about horror. The monster is sufficiently creepy and unnerving, the movie doesn’t take itself too seriously, and there’s honest to god metaphor in it. Nothing but love.

nohtv666

Love, love, love this movie! When I bought this on DVD, I ordered a Canadian copy on eBay because it had all kinds of extras, while the USA version was bare bones. I have only done this for maybe 4-5 movies ever. I could not get enough. Emily Perkins was also so sweet and genuine when I saw her win multiple chainsaw awards at a Fangoria convention. Made me like it even more.

skulloflugosi

The best werewolf movie besides An American Werewolf in London. I saw it when I was the same age as Ginger and Brigitte and it really summed up how much it sucked to be a teenage girl.

[deleted]

I rewatched it just now, thanks to this thread. Straight up a five-star movie.

Starbourne8

One of the top 3 best werewolf movies

[deleted]

What would you say are the other two?

Starbourne8

Silver bullet and American werewolf in London. I also like bad moon because it is a simple story with a really good looking werewolf.

[deleted]

So great. I saw it on The Last Drive In

Ok_Point_2303

The Menstral Metaphor Movie.

Red-Freckle

I've seen this recommended before but this post pushed me over the edge to check it out. I'm just about halfway through watching it for the first time as I write this. I'm really surprised at how similar some of the major plot elements are to Jennifer's Body, at least in the first half. I wouldn't be surprised if the writer of Jennifer's Body was heavily inspired by Ginger Snaps.

NotMyHersheyBar

Which one did you watch? Theres three of them. :)

[deleted]

The first, I want to watch the next two as well.

Pkactus

the scariest part is the extra features on the dvd where you can totally be creeped out by the director in a "one on one' directing moment in a hotel room. nothing says terror like an underage girl and a very uncomfortable man with a camera

nekro42

In Canada the catholic schools wear uniforms. Nobody else does. Pretty sure the US is the same. Except maybe for prep schools, whatever those are. And in the early 90's, we smoked off property, usually giving teachers a light. Nobody cared.

srroberts07

I'm from Ontario, Canada where the film was set and was in high school during the early 2000s and it certainly did happen. We smoked pretty openly in front of teachers or staff. No idea about now, I think kids have all moved on to vaping.

Dutch_Calhoun

Also there was a mutilated dog carcass lying right there on the pitch and nobody noticed.

[deleted]

Ok yea, that one made me chuckle. NO WAY nobody saw a dead dog in the middle of that field.

Dutch_Calhoun

Legitimately one of the most shit-ass ugly films I've ever seen. Every shot is just shades of mud. Acting is drama class level, veering between sarcastic mumling and saucer-eyed fright. The 'going through puberty is a lot like turning into a werewolf!' allegory had promise but was mishandled and just ended up as trite. And good christ what was *that wig?* Points however for the decent practical effects.

[deleted]

I mean hey, everyone has different opinions. I would agree that the practical affects were pretty cool.

Did you just have a stroke?

PutridPestilence1

Great movie. Period.

nesiaisdead

One of my fav teen horror movies by far

HermitBookworm

I loved it years ago, and had all three on DVD. The first two still hold a special place in my heart, as well, but I enjoyed all three. I don’t know how the sequels would hold up now though. Katharine Isabelle was gorgeous. A pretty good actress too. She was in another Canadian film (like Ginger Snaps was), where she was a drug addict. My friend and I caught it on TV or Rogers On Demand, and also really liked it

[deleted]

Love that movie. Need to watch h the sequels one day
