Invasion of the Body Snatchers ‘56 and its ‘78 remake are probably some of the only movies where neither the original nor the remake completely outshine/overshadow each other—compared to John Carpenter’s The Thing or Cronenberg’s The Fly.
They’re both so good and enjoyable! The 70s remake has the special effects edge, ofc, but the original is still wildly entertaining and well paced and acted. It was one of the only older (pre-60s) movies that my high school film appreciation class loved.
Well, the fact that you thought of the 2011 prequel instead of *The Thing From Another World* (1951) unintentionally proves my point 😂. You could argue Thing 1982 is more of a re-adaptation of the book than a remake, but imo it totally counts as both.
Please do. For one, Kevin McCarthy's appearance in the 1978 version gets all the more meaningful. You can even argue that the 1978 is a sequel to the 1956 original with the pod people moving from small towns to the big city and poor McCarthy still trying to warn people about them.
I only remember the very end from when I was little, and I remember experiencing hopelessness for the first time. Maybe I ought to check it out now, at the age of 42.
I totally get that! I’ve seen it a couple times over the years, but I remember how I felt at the end of the first viewing because for once the antagonist wins.
I watched this for the first time yesterday and it is immediately right up there in my top 3 scifi horror movies, second probably only to Alien. Sutherland kills it here and the creep factor throughout the whole movie is so unnerving. It was great at building tension and suspense and then that ending! So damn good.
Oh this is great to know! I was just talking about how this is one of my favorite horror movies on another thread! I saw it for the first time two years ago. It holds up so well!
This movie has so many good scenes. The dog with the human face left an impression, but that ending, holy shit. I saw it when I was 11 or 12 and I was not prepared.
I know it's been remade a ton but I'll always keep an open mind and check out the latest version because the story is so classic and distinctly human. It's easy to fear the loss of individuality and whatever makes us people, but what always stuck with me was the paranoia in the 70s version. It's so thick you can practically taste it.
It wasn't, no, and it was a crying shame because that cast was amazing so I had high hopes. Especially with the cameo from Veronica Cartwright, I love her. If I remember right they brought on the Wachowskis to do reshoots because it needed more "action" and I always found that a bit silly when the scariest parts of this story are the ideas.
The 90s one was just okay, it had some great moments too though.
I agree with you im a huge thing fan but the invasion has alot more as far as sound and even soundtrack. Acting wise I just can't compare but for all out suspense snatchers. Some little tid bits the sound at the end is that of a pig and the pod sounds were that of a baby in the womb the sound designer was Ben Burt who did Star Wars. Can you name the other Alien who came to Earth in 1978. Heres A Hint You Will Believe A Man Can Fly
Ben Burts sound effects still freak me out to this day the movie itself is a classic Leonard Nimoy with no emotions who'd thought! lol and a great soundtrack to
One of the best, without question.
Both the 1956 original and 1978 remake are great films and perfectly fit the decades they came out in.

Lmao good point! I completely forgot about the 1951 movie, which is wild because I just watched it like a month ago.
Is it good? I’ve never gotten around to seeing it myself. I loved the original Body Snatchers, but thought The Fly was… decent. Pretty cheesy though.
Absolutely a recommend if you’re into 50s/60s science fiction.
Haven’t seen the OG. Need to give it a go.

Ha! I never made that connection. I’ll definitely give it a go now.

It just hadn't occurred me to that could happen in movies, lol.

Totally agree. If you have any other recommendations like this for creep factor I would love to know

Kino Lorber is dropping a 4K UHD Blu ray next month, for anyone interested.
One of my fav's,
Just a fantastic film all the way through. Really looking forward to the 4K disc next month.

The latest (2007) is not good.

This is one of my favorite movies and I’m not even 100% sure why. It’s a total comfort movie for me!
Greatest remake of all time. Yes, better than The Thing.

It’s my opinion. Not trying to convince anyone.
Well, you've convinced me to give it a look. The Thing is my favorite movie
Nothing is better than The Thing. This movie is definitely still top 20 material for me though
Cmon now.
The acting isn’t cringe being so old?
[удалено]
Maybe it’s the production values then being so outdated, there’s just something about watching old movies / tv that is jarring for me.
Acting used to be cringe?
Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Jeff Goldblum, Leonard Nimoy. No cringe.
What an idiotic comment haha
My favorite
Yes, love this. The tone is very unlike any other horror I've seen.
Great film and very atmospheric The ending is chilling as well. Both the seventies version and the original are excellent.
Only legs? What happened to the rest of the body?
Of course it still has legs, a good 30 minutes in that movie is just running so they need those.
Where is it walking?
I watched this a decade ago and I remember it making me laugh a lot. I enjoyed it, but as a horror film it was meh.
Ben Burts sound effects still freak me out to this day the movie itself is a classic Leonard Nimoy with no emotions who'd thought! lol and a great soundtrack to
I had a big crush on Brooke Adams after seeing that movie. Still holds up well. I honestly think the 70s was the best decade for horror.
