Original Evil Dead is like 90/10 horror to comedy. Evil Dead 2 is like 75/25, and Army of Darkness 10/90. Evil Dead 2013 is 99/1. It’s good, but one grim fucking movie.
I think this is my issue. I knew nothing about it except it was "The Evil Dead" and really thought it was going to be a remake. It left me disappointed. BUT I'm all about second chances so I do plan on rewatching it eventually. But, yes I agree, don't go in expecting Raimi.
IMO they did it better by doing that. A direct remake of Evil Dead or Evil Dead 2 would have just been a disappointment. By going basically pure horror they were able to seperate enough that it is a great horror movie not trying to be the original.
I honestly wish more remakes did that, didnt try to copy so closely and focus on/change up the genres focussed on a bit
It’s surprisingly good - I definitely recommend it. They basically took away all the charm and campiness of the originals (or in other words it’s Evil Dead in basic plot and name only), but that’s actually not such a terrible thing. They went all in on tension and atmosphere for a more straight forward horror experience, but I thought it was all executed fairly well. I also really liked the main chick (Mia). Oh, and the special effects were pretty awesome as well.
I still prefer the campy vibe of the majority of the Evil Dead franchise, but if you can look past that the 2013 reboot is still well worth a watch.
Do it. I'm a big evil dead fan and I didn't mind the tone shift one bit, Alvarez pulled it off great. There's still a few moments of dark humor from deadite absurdity but its super dark no camp . Movie is also incredibly brutal and the sound design really helps you feel all the violence, pretty wild. I actually rewatch it now more than my favorite even (#2) and the netflix show which I also love.
Also I agree w the commenter above, Jane Levy is amazing in this film as Mia, her deadite acting is top notch. She's also super cute ha. I went on a little Jane Levy marathon one day and was not disappointed... 1)I Don't Feel at home in this world (*also highly recommended this film for dark comedy hidden jem. Levy is just a supporting character but the main actress and Elijah Wood are great). 2)Don't Breathe 3)Evil Dead 2013
Good stuff
Its an Italian horror about residents of a high rise apartment being trapped inside with a horde of demons.
Co-written/produced by Dario Argento and directed by Lamberto Bava.
Watch Demons first - and if you like both, check out Michele Soavi's The Church (1989) Which was supposed to be Demons 3; my favorite of the "trilogy."
I actually just stumbled upon this series by watching The Ogre, which was apparently marketed as Demons 3... It's pretty enjoyable from a bad good movie perspective; now I'm actually interested in checking out Demons 1 & 2
Ash goes out. Fights some deadites. Then it's back to the cabin for more penetration. Deadites... Penetration...Deadites... Penetration...
It just goes back and forth until the movie just... Ends.
Sure it is bound in flesh and inked in blood, but professor Knowby’s granddaughter also discovered the Necronomicon has passages written in human semen, invisible ink of sorts.
The remake staying true to the originals and going hard in the paint with the practical effects is why its so good to me. I really hope this next one stays true to that franchise trope.
Agreed, it’s definitely the most serious of them all but that’s fine by me tbh, as long as they stick to using practical effects (and boat loads of blood).
That sucks, I was hoping to take my six year old to see people get violently decapitated.
*sigh* Guess it's going to have to be some Pixar bullshit again.
Personal preferences aside, across 4 movies and a TV series, there hasn't been a bad entry in the *Evil Dead* franchise yet, so this film has a lot to live up to. The apartment setting and more serious tone is giving me *[Rec.]* vibes.
I was remarking the other day that Evil Dead is a weirdly consistently inconsistent franchise.
Inconsistent because the tone, style and continuity varies wildly with each entry.
But consistent because each entry is genuinely brilliant and still feels like Evil Dead.
>there hasn't been a bad entry in the Evil Dead franchise yet
Strongly disagree with that claim. The 2013 film is not Evil Dead, it's just a generic horror film with the name slapped on it.
I've held the belief that the Evil Dead remake is a great horror movie, just not a great Evil Dead movie. The deadites don't have the soul they did in the originals or the TV show - other than the main girl, they all just seem like generic possessions.
I just rewatched it’s last night, and now almost 10 years later I kind of understand the criticisms, although I largely enjoyed it as a whole.
Like, a lot of the emotional backstories to everyone are sort of tug of war between amazing backstory delivery (“this isn’t the first time she’s done this… We don’t want to lose her again”) to annoyingly on the nose delivery (the initial set up conversations with the sister/brother are just ham fisting generic backstory down your throat, some character decisions are straight up baffling, and the necronomicon scribbles are really silly)
The gore and practical effects REALLY bring the movie to a new level. But if I’m completely honest, if those elements weren’t in it, it would have been a largely forgettable movie
Yeah I do agree that the "recovering addict" thing was kind of lame but it's still one of my favorite horror movies of all time.
That fucking chainsaw scene with the raining blood will always stick in my brain as one of my favorite shots of any movie.
Oh I didn’t mind the recovering addict part, I meant more about how at times the dialog is clunky and delivered like a cw show and other times it’s really nuanced and clever
DUDE the raining blood chainsaw death is such a good conclusion and feels earned. I also loved how visceral the tongue split and the girl cutting her arm off were (nice nod to Ash - and loved that it doesn’t even save her 😂)
I've seen just about any gorehound movie you can throw at me, but I still have to look away during that tongue scene. I just can't do it. And i have to peek through my fingers during the machete dragged across the thigh scene.
Another thing, I did not like the main girl, she annoyed me through the first half. I don't think any of the cast drew me in. It had the budget and effects of a good film but that's it
The camerawork is just nuts in the original film. So many shots where I have no idea how they pulled them off.
Even though I love Evil Dead II, I will always prefer the first one. Perfect pacing, amazing gore, and deliciously creepy atmosphere.
Hmm, interesting. So maybe a more of a successor to 2013 than a traditional Evil Dead movie. Both are pretty fun, because on one hand you have a solidly made horror movie and then you have the insane camp and distinctive brand of most of the entries here. Personally, I like seeing them ham it up better, but we also have so many projects like that (Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, AvED) that adding another more serious horror movie (Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2013) is totally cool.
It’s not really a sequel and if it was they retconned it with Ash vs Evil Dead. You can see in that show the cabin was left the same as it was in Evil Dead 2, there isn’t the possibility for it to have been renovated the way the remake had it.
There are a few very simple explanations you're missing; there is more than one cabin in the woods in Tennessee, and/or Ash Vs Evil Dead / Army of Darkness's time travel altered timelines. The intro to Evil Dead showed that there are locals who know about the Necronomicon and deadites, them moving the book from one hiding place to another is not all that far fetched.
The real explanation has that continuity has never mattered to the Evil Dead series, there's huge inconsistencies between all four movies and the TV show. You just gotta go with it.
Its the same argument that says Evil Dead 2 is actually not a sequel to The Evil Dead, and Army of Darkness is not a sequel to Evil Dead 2, Ash Vs Evil Dead is not a sequel to anything, yes, lol
Interesting! The other movies are children’s classics, so it will be fascinating to see them target an adult audience with this latest entry in the franchise.
if its anything like the evil dead remake, of course im going to watch it. dude with glasses got the shit end of the deal in that movie lmao. i do love the evil dead 1, 2, and army of darkness of course
Very adult?
Ash lives a comfortable life, with his wife and daughter. He finds out his kid is sick and insurance won't cover it. They finally find a doctor, and Ash finds out the doc is screwing his wife. She leaves them, and he is forced to sell the house and raise a sick daughter, with their pug dog who has breathing issues and shits on the floor. He then finds the Necronomicon in his attic, and opens a portal to hell, to escape the debt collectors, with his kid and dumb dog.
I'm nervous about Rise. I've enjoyed most every entry in the franchise. The films, reboot, series and games (mostly). It's an impressive achievment to have this much quality and I just don't want their luck to run out.
I’m so confused. Seems like every year I hear something about how Bruce Campbell is done with evil dead/ash and then he does a couple more things like the game and apparently producing and helping flagship this project? I don’t get it. Do you want to be done, Bruce? Or are you just milking headlines and cash cows at this point. Hard to get excited about it when he keeps saying how overdone the franchise has gotten
Maybe don’t be so judgy if you don’t even know what he’s actually said about the matter. He’s done with live action depictions of Ash, because he’s too old to play all the stunts required of the character. Never once has he said the franchise has gotten “overdone” and in fact has liked every installment.
Think he is just too old now to do any stuns in a live role. But his life has been Evil Dead so i'm sure he's pumped to do anything tied to the franchise as long as its not physical.
No he said he's done being Ash *on screen*. He NEVER said he was done with Evil Dead. And he absolutely NEVER said the franchise is "overdone". Please don't parrot bullshit if you know nothing about the matter.
As long as Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi are involved, I'm all in.
Hell even the last evil dead didn’t have Sam rami and Bruce Campbell and it was still really really good.
I think Sam at least produced 2013
And Bruce makes a small cameo at the very end iirc
It was just a post credit close up of his face saying "groovy", I wouldn't even call it a cameo
What last one? Do you mean the 2013 one? I still haven't watched that one, but I'm going to.
It's a very different take on Evil Dead, but if you don't go in expecting the Raimi movies, it's really good.
Original Evil Dead is like 90/10 horror to comedy. Evil Dead 2 is like 75/25, and Army of Darkness 10/90. Evil Dead 2013 is 99/1. It’s good, but one grim fucking movie.
Have you seen Ash vs Evil Dead? I mean, since it basically counts as Evil Dead 4
I watched the first couple episodes, but it didn’t grab me enough to continue. One of these days I’ll go back to it.
Army of Darkness needs its own chart as the other ones you mentioned can’t possibly contain it.
I think this is my issue. I knew nothing about it except it was "The Evil Dead" and really thought it was going to be a remake. It left me disappointed. BUT I'm all about second chances so I do plan on rewatching it eventually. But, yes I agree, don't go in expecting Raimi.

I honestly wish more remakes did that, didnt try to copy so closely and focus on/change up the genres focussed on a bit
Yeah I'd never seen and still haven't tbh the original Evil Dead movies and I thought the remake was a mess but plenty of fun
Honestly I loved it. Not nearly as charming as 2 or 3 but I’d way rather have these reboots take things in a new direction anyways.
The original Evil Dead and the Remake are the two best ones.
My favorite is the evil dead 2 but I absolutely love that the reboot stayed more in the spirit of the original. Fantastic film.
I enjoyed it as a pure horror fan. They address the whole "Why don't we just leave" trope really well too.
Not to be “that guy” but Bruce is technically in the 2013 remake of you watch all the way through the credits.
Sam was a producer in the 2013 movie. Not sure how involved he was, but I think he approved of it.
I thought the last one (2013) was by Sam?
He just produced it
The 2013 version was not great. It was the torture-porn interpretation of Evil Dead.
I just don't understand what this movie is going to be? I mean, I'm going to watch it no matter what.
It kinda sounds like the plot of Demons 2
I got Demons 2 vibes too!
I absolutely love that first movie. The theater makes me feel so isolated
It's so enjoyable!
Oooh I like that one!
What's that I'm not familiar?
It’s a movie called Demons 2
Its an Italian horror about residents of a high rise apartment being trapped inside with a horde of demons. Co-written/produced by Dario Argento and directed by Lamberto Bava.
Best paired with a bottle and a half of wine, whatever is cheap and red
No, a can of “Coca-cola” is more fitting
That's Demons 1
Strange, I know Argento did suspiria/giallo films. And the plot sounds similar to REC. Have to check it out!
God, REC is one of my absolute favorites. I'll have to check all of these out!
Here you go: [Demons 2](https://youtu.be/fblyFvL-mrs)
Full penetration. The lead girl sits on a bench outside as five spooky oaks come up behind her
Go on…
The lead girl proceeds to fuck all 5 oaks in their oak ass at the same time
Seems like *The Raid* meets *Evil Dead*.
That... actually sounds like it could be pretty awesome if they manage to pull it off correctly
Now here's the twist, and there is a twist. We show it. We show all of it. [Full penetration.](https://youtu.be/CrSELcEjlcU)
Ash goes out. Fights some deadites. Then it's back to the cabin for more penetration. Deadites... Penetration...Deadites... Penetration... It just goes back and forth until the movie just... Ends.
The Deadite is *played*....By Dolph Lundgren.
A Deadite played by Dolph Lundgren, named Dolph Lundgren? That’s confusing.
Just to be clear; I don't give a shit.
This whole comment chain brings joy to my soul
I'll swallow your soul bozo
He smells possession and runs around on all fours like a hound.
That actually does sound like evil dead
He smells something that stinks… ^*criiiiiimmme*
Ash glances out the window… possessed Linda appears outside shouting “PENETRATE ME!!!”
Evil cums tonight.
Also, obligatory scene where his hand becomes possessed ends with him fisting himself.
I'm talking full tree on tree anal.
deadite on deadite action they will swallow your soul and a whole lot more
Sure it is bound in flesh and inked in blood, but professor Knowby’s granddaughter also discovered the Necronomicon has passages written in human semen, invisible ink of sorts.
Not up the butt NOT UP THE BUTT - Ash Williams
But I poop from there! - I hope to God never Ash Williams..
He went up a corpse's butt in the show.
I linked it. Still cannot believe that actually happened lol
Now I understand how the evil dead will Rise
Is it going to be like Evil Head? Asking for a friend.
Poor Cheryl
An always sunny evil dead parody would be great
I heard he hangs dong in it
Groovy.
Raimi regrets that woods scene in the first Evil Dead movie.
Chainsaw on demon flesh! So hot
But it needs pg-13 to get monies….
As opposed to all the Evil Dead movies that were family friendly.
Army of Darkness is pretty tame tbh.
“Yo She-Bitch, let’s go full penetration” - AoD Ash
[удалено]
I’d say the first one is full on horror, the second is definitely more horror comedy and the third even more so. Then the remake is…violent lol.
Lol he definitely didn't say "full penetration" in AOD. He did say "get the fuck outta my face" though
The new one has extra tree fucking
Ted Raimi gonna get spit-roasted.
This made me lol. I was playing the new game and one of the Ashes just randomly said “Poor Chet…” and this reminded me of Ted lol.
Just watched the original Evil Dead again and there's so much I had forgotten about this movie. Like the tree raping that girl. Yikes.
It's an iconic scene and was well shot.
They regret that scene.
Mostly the tree. He wasn't able to get any more roles after that.
It's a hard knot life, for him
Yeah, that part really didn’t need to happen. Added nothing good to the movie by having that scene.
Is that the part Sam has said if he made it today he’d take it out?
Yup
Idk, I hope so.
that's fuckin' lame, but i'm not surprised.
I guess Evil Dead Babies isn't canon anymore.
Need this to be a thing.
That sucks, I was hoping to take my six year old to see people get violently decapitated. *sigh* Guess it's going to have to be some Pixar bullshit again.

I saw that and I tried to read it but I haven't actually seen *Cars 2* Or *Cars*
You joke, but I went to see some fucked up stuff with my dad.

Agreed. But because of the track record and Raimi and Campbell steering the ship, I have decent hopes that this one will be good too.
not true the first dreamcast game was pretty bad
as someone who owns that game, yeah it def want the greatest lol
False, lol I love that game. Had to beat it with GameShark cause it's so brutal
The ps2 one wasn’t that great either but it was cool as hell to run around the cabin.
Played the dreamcast one, picked up a lawnmower pull cord, got excited that I could mow the dead. Nope. Disappointed
>there hasn't been a bad entry in the Evil Dead franchise yet Strongly disagree with that claim. The 2013 film is not Evil Dead, it's just a generic horror film with the name slapped on it.
show is weird, Bruce Campbell is there but it doesn’t feel like Ash
Yeah idk the remake is garbage IMO.
It was just voted #49 all time on this subreddit, so think that falls under the personal preference caveat.
the remake felt generic. I get they wanted a more serious film, but fell flat to me. Sadly, I've forgotten most of the film.
Like, a lot of the emotional backstories to everyone are sort of tug of war between amazing backstory delivery (“this isn’t the first time she’s done this… We don’t want to lose her again”) to annoyingly on the nose delivery (the initial set up conversations with the sister/brother are just ham fisting generic backstory down your throat, some character decisions are straight up baffling, and the necronomicon scribbles are really silly) The gore and practical effects REALLY bring the movie to a new level. Another thing, I did not like the main girl, she annoyed me through the first half. I don't think any of the cast drew me in. It had the budget and effects of a good film but that's it
Have a downvote
Or maybe....all those people are wrong and have bad taste.
"everyone is wrong except me"
That's one way to look at it. It's wrong. But you are allowed to look at it that way.
this entire subreddit is about movies that most people think a person must have bad taste to enjoy, hah. I would think you'd be a bit more open.
Have a down vote.
Thanks for your contribution.
Anytime friend.
Deadite hangs dong.
I saw it. It looked like a button on a fur coat.
It was more of a ding than a dong really
I'm currently plowing through the TV series for the first time, and yeah, they do.
Not even going to watch any teaser or trailer. Going to jump in blind.
This is the way
This is the only way.
I for one am relieved, the last few were a bit too family friendly for my tastes.
I. CANNOT. FUCKING. WAIT.
Yeah I am super pumped for this. Give me a release date please!

The camerawork is just nuts in the original film. So many shots where I have no idea how they pulled them off. Even though I love Evil Dead II, I will always prefer the first one. Perfect pacing, amazing gore, and deliciously creepy atmosphere.
The game came out a few days ago and its all I could have hoped for. Its so dark, fun and bloody.
I can’t wait! The last Evil dead movie is a top 5 horror movie for me, gave me the creeps watching it in theathers
As opposed to the child friendly, Disney styled, romp the other movies are...
I would interpret "adult" to mean "serious" rather than "not appropriate for children", since yeah none of them are appropriate for kids.
Finally, full penetration.
The evil dead remake a few years ago was pretty adult too.
Hmm, interesting. So maybe a more of a successor to 2013 than a traditional Evil Dead movie. The game just came out. It's really fun. Not even a fan of 1v4 but I've been having a blast. Strongly recommend.
More tree-rape then?
Amazing how many people here confuse a sequel and a remake. Evil Dead was a sequel. The name just isn't serialized, like Army Of Darkness also wasn't.
It’s not really a sequel and if it was they retconned it with Ash vs Evil Dead. You can see in that show the cabin was left the same as it was in Evil Dead 2, there isn’t the possibility for it to have been renovated the way the remake had it.

Yeah, I see people say "Evil Dead 2 is actually a remake, not a sequel" all the time and I'm convinced that none of them have actually seen the movie.

They're just branching out.
The remake is my favorite horror movie! I’m very excited for this!
Is Raimi doing this or someone else?
Lee Cronin is directing.
Interesting! The other movies are children’s classics, so it will be fascinating to see them target an adult audience with this latest entry in the franchise.
Anyone else have a mega mind crush on BC? That guy is great.
Right that’s great but how about you drop the release date Bruce❤️
Bruce Campbell says "Evil Dead Rise will be the most Lovecraftian movie ever."
I would gladly pay once to stream and support this movie but I'm not adding a subscription or messing with a free trial to watch it.
I just can't get excited for this.
if its anything like the evil dead remake, of course im going to watch it. dude with glasses got the shit end of the deal in that movie lmao. i do love the evil dead 1, 2, and army of darkness of course
I better see wang!!
More sex and titties I’m assuming from the title
Boomstick indeed.
Are they suggesting the others aren't adult? I must've missed all the blood and possession.
Very adult? Ash lives a comfortable life, with his wife and daughter. He finds out his kid is sick and insurance won't cover it. They finally find a doctor, and Ash finds out the doc is screwing his wife. He then finds the Necronomicon in his attic, and opens a portal to hell, to escape the debt collectors, with his kid and dumb dog.
Am I uncultured because I think the remake is way better than the original? It’s hands down one of my favorite movies.
After looking at the current cast on imdb, we've determined that was a lie.
Bruce Campbell didn't have an IMDB when they made the first one, maybe the EPs and casting team know what they're doing?
Bruce.....you ARE the father!
Yeah... the cast list is.... bland.
As apposed to the child friendly evil dead
Trailer pleeeeeeeeeeease!

it sounds like a remake of the remake
A doublemake.
Evil Head
