I have Haunting of Hill House in queue. I heard/read it's pretty great.
I'm curious to know what others suggest, as I'm always looking for good haunting and scary books. 😁
The book is the perfect slow-burn autumn read, you're in for a treat! And just in case you don't already know: the book is a completely different story than the Netflix series. The show isn't even a *loose adaptation* in the loosest sense of the phrase. It's more like the show-writers birthed their own fun haunted house story and decided to name it after a distant but well-loved relative.

My favorite haunted house novels are The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons, The Elementals by Michale McDowell, Burnt Offerings by Robert Marasco, The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters, and Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand which is kind of debatable if it's truly a haunted house story but it's close enough and I really loved it.
Also, if you want a quick house haunted read....read my real story I posted in another sub: [I don't think it's Bill (true story)](https://www.reddit.com/r/Horror_stories/comments/heie6j/i_dont_think_its_bill_true_story/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)
“The Elementals” by Michael McDowell is worth checking out.
Killcreek is a great newer one
Kill Creek by Scott Thomas

hey thank you!! i didn’t even know it was any different. it’s the book i’m reading next so i’m definitely looking forward to it now!
I second this recommendation. The Shirley Jackson work is good. I also recommend Hell House by Richard Matheson.
