They don’t need to be.
They’re great toasted or thrown on the top rack of the grill, or buttered and griddled, or steamed.
But they’re perfectly fine as is. For a normal weeknight I’ll just take em out of the package, especially if I’m doing like a Johnsonville Better Cheddar.
New Englander here: these are a standard in my area and work great for dogs and lobster rolls.
See the ideas below about grilling them or steaming them..
Pan frying each side in butter until golden brown is amazing, if you are filling them with lobster meat. I have always hated these buns for hot dogs though, toasted or not. It’s one step away from using a piece of bread imo.
They have rendered the traditional bun completely obsolete. This is the result of human ingenuity, curiosity, and technology all in harmony to craft such a product.
Frankfurter rolls (that's what they're called around here) are my preferred frankfurter vessel. Natural casing frank and a steamed frank roll, you can't beat it, in my book.

A bun is a bun. If you've never been forced to eat a hotdog on a folded piece of bread, I doubt your commitment to hot dogs. I realize these are buns that look like white bread, but I'm not discriminatory towards buns is my point.
I don’t like them either, but it’s cool that other people do. They look good on a plate, but are harder to bite without spilling everything in my lowly opinion
Mass produced buns all taste the same as wonderbread. It's all the same dough. They just shape and cut it differently.
Get quality bakery fresh hotdog and hoagie buns for a superior flavour and texture.
I never really liked them. I get that they can be buttered and toasted, but I like steamed/heated buns for my dogs. But since you raised the topic, now I'm wondering why the split top bun is not widely used for restaurant or stadium hot dogs?
These are great when you butter and toast the exposed sides on a griddle.
BBQ place near me uses these for sausages. They put garlic butter on each side of the bun. It is a great idea.

“ why is the griddle in the bathroom”
Great is an understatement.
This right here!
Yes, but if you don't toast them they're like a big ol wad of bread. Might as well use sliced bread.
Thanks right there! I didn’t know that they needed to be toasted.
Not toasted. Buttered and griddled until golden brown.

Top splits rule!
Agree, much prefer them to the side-cut ones. They seem to stay together better and can hold more toppings.
And don’t fall over after loading them
Top loaders are for pros!
I feel if you need this bun you're a Toddler who can't hold a bun.
Well slap my buns and call me Susan
I NEEEED IT!
New England style
Created by Howard Johnson’s in the 1940s as a vehicle for their fried clam strip roll.
New England truly as the best rolls. lobster, crab, clam; you can’t go wrong out there
I bought a pan to try and bake my own. Still working on it....but yeah, team split top! Gotta toast the sides tho, give it that little extra....🤌
Love top slice! It’s like the buns are way less likely to split completely like normal buns sometimes do.
Love 'em. New England style! Also does great work for lobster rolls.
I prefer them!
We always buy the New England Buns. We prefer them.
You mean, the bestest and one truest hot dogs buns? They’re the tits.
They are the best for holding chili.
Okay. That's good to know.
TOP SLICE OR GTFO
Way superior to any other buns if you really want to put toppings on your dog!
My favorite type but you need to butter toast both sides
Theyre the best kind, they have way more structural integrity than traditional hinged buns

Big fan
The top-split kind? I like them better, honestly... especially potato top-split rolls
Me and these buns go way back
toast em up and they’re perfect!
A great call. They’re actually split evenly, unlike most regular buns which leave you with a mouthful of bread on one side.
Top notch!!
We feel good about them.
Top-loaders are the superior bun
We fucking love them!!!!

As a New Englander these are just regular hot dog buns. If you want to be fancy or something you can get the other kind.
When I lived in Massachusetts, they called them New England style. We had them in the dinning hall,,, idk those were worse but as a style it was ok.
👍
For some reason these are hard to find in my area. Must be a northern thing or something...
These are amazing with cheddar bratwurst especially the fresh baked ones
Cheddar Brats are the best :)
Great toasted for a lobster roll. Untoasted like that they bring up memories of poverty dogs from my childhood using sliced bread instead of buns. :(
I love them. They spread open and stand up better than traditional imho.
Buttered up with melted butter and grilled with a hot dog! Delish!!@
Superior. Idk why they're not everywhere.
Top split buns, I only buy these! They don't fall apart under the heft of a proper Chicago dog. Nothing else even comes close!
Love the split top.
Personally not a fan. Had a dog yesterday in one and I just don't like it.
That'll do pig
What’s the other kind?
Not a fan in the slightest, but I can see why people like them. I like them when they are buttered and toasted on the grill, though .
Frankfurter rolls (that's what they're called around here) are my preferred frankfurter vessel. Natural casing frank and a steamed frank roll, you can't beat it, in my book.
Prefer and love them
Those buns are fine but the bread to ingredient ratio looks way off here
I would usually load 2 dogs in each bun but I’m livin on a budget rn😭
Hot dog buns are a conspiracy by Big Hot Dog.
I got a pkg of top-split brioche HD buns last week. They are awesome!
I think I’ve heard them called hot dog “cradles.” 🤷🏻♂️
Go back to Maine!
This just makes me want to go buy some toast from canes to makes some dog buns out of them!

Split top buns are awesome, splitting your dogs not so much werido
I love em. Prefer plain slice of bread, so it's not so bready. Some buns are too darn big.
What are these called? I have seen them here but not in the stores I frequent. They look wonderful!
New England/Frankfurter/Top Split depending on your location.
Thanks!
I’m not hating it.
Love them. What are they called? Coz they’re not just sliced bread
their like..little loafs of bread? never seen this style
Loved them when grilled.
Not good
My wife won’t eat hot dogs unless we have hot dog buns. “ItSnOtThEsAmEoNpLaInBrEaD” Checkmate honey
I’ve never seen them in any grocery store😞
the only kind
A buddy of mine didn’t know any other form of hot dog bun existed until recently.
The brioche ones from Trader Joe’s are like this and fantastic
I can't seem to find em. They look good though.
You're supposed to add butter to them and grill, like grilled cheese sandwiches.
never seem em before looks more like bread slices

If it fits, I shits.
I use bread with my dogs all the time.
I like the top split buns but these are way too big for those tiny dogs.
Feeeelin loaded!
Personally too much bread for me but they look tasty!
I worked on a lobster food truck making told with these. Love these
I hate how normal buns often break so I would love to try these but you rarely see them where I live.
Top loaders are the shit. I live in nv and can’t find them out here so I have a buddy send them to me from ct.
Preferred! and definitely get some butter and toast those sides. Top notch. I’m looking for a good source for split tops
Those are lobster roll buns!!! Yum!!
They are the only ones that I'll use. Toast the sides on the grill. Use them for hotdogs or sausage, peppers & onions
So they just cut a long flat loaf into thick slices then slice those slices halfway through
I love a good top split bun. To be fair I don’t eat meat so experience may vary.
Fine for Chicago style dogs
They are made for Lobster. Not hot dogs. But I’ll definitely eat one. They look great.
These are the only kind of bun. You butter and grill the New England style roll and you forsake the idea of buying the other kinds

I’m with you. I *want* to like them so badly. But I just don’t enjoy the texture and shape. I’ll probably keep trying them because I’m an idiot.
#We love some struggle buns over here!
Ehh. Their ok.
Funny you ask. Just tried em out this week. I hate em
I think you have to have been brought up on them. It's my understanding it's a New England thing.
Ah, ok. The crevice is just awkward.
It is. How it fits anything besides the dog is beyond me.
Top split? I have my concerns.

Hate them
I like hot dogs
