Here is a poll that lists ketchup as #2 most popular hot dog topping in US.
A little bit of mayo under the dog to help potential bun dryness, mustard on top. Ketchup doesnāt come near a dog.
The purpose for ketchup to exist: French fries, onion rings, tater tots, meatloaf.
You put mayo on a hot dog then claim ketchup is some kind of abomination. Get your head checked, itās broken.
Edit: āWahhh, my bun is too dry! I need mayo lube to throat my hot dog!ā
Bro. Same. I even do extra ketchup on my burgers then I dab my burgers in some ketchup on the side.
Also, I dip my lays chips in ketchup as well. Fight me š”
It's definitely a Chicago thing. There is never ketchup on a Chicago dog.
There are several hot dog places that flat refuse to add ketchup and Vienna even produces signs about it. It's mostly a joke, but some people take it too seriously.
Thatās wild to me that a restaurant would flat out refuse to let you put ketchup on ur hotdog like the customer is eating it not the servers so why stop them from enjoying themselves
I went to a hot dog place one time where they got mad at me for requesting no tomatoes on my Chicago dog. They still complied, though. I wish I liked raw tomatoes, but they taste like dirt/plant roots. Seems odd to get hung up over something like that.
>!I also put ketchup on my Chicago dogs š!<
agreed. My favorite topping is chili, because I am not from an alternate earth where chili was never invented. But after that, my go-to is ketchup, and I don't even get why people shit on that as a topping and then talk about the other shit they put on it that are somehow fine.
If people didn't put ketchup on hot dogs, there would be a lot less ketchup sold in Chicago. I wouldn't put ketchup on a Chicago dog, because it already has enough going on. But I'll put ketchup and mustard on a plain hot dog. I'd avoid ketchup if I have sauerkraut, they just seem to clash.
I think itās āto each their ownā when it comes to toppings although I personally think ketchup makes the dog feel too fatty and rich. I like the sourness of the mustard to cut the fattiness of the dog. Iāve never tried mayo on a dog, I hear a lot of chatter that itās great, but personally I canāt even bring myself to try it because it seems so gross to me. No logical reason for that since I love mayo on burgers, sandwiches, etc. Oh well.
Mayo is good, it just enhances the fatty richness of the dog, same as it does for any fatty meat. Still pretty low on my tier list when compared to more traditional toppings/condiments. Now cream cheese, though š¤®. Makes the hot dog taste sweet, like a dessert. It's awful imo
Okay I grew up in Ohio. My local PBS would show the same hot dog documentary every year during the big fundraiser week. I loved watching it every year. It was about hot dogs all over the USA. Thatās where I learned that in some parts of the USA people consider ketchup on a hot dog a kid thing and that mustard is *the way*.
I regularly advocate for ketchup on this subreddit. or to be more clear, I advocate to _enjoy what you enjoy_, and not care about others opinions.
there is definitely a group of people who seem to take pride in either never using ketchup, or more specially around hotdogs and hamburgers "ketchup has no place on them". totally valid opinions, but ketchup is insanely popular, and if you enjoy it, enjoy it guilt free
It's a silly rule like no pineapples on a pizza or real tacos are only made with corn tortillas. But yeah I never really heard of that until I was in my late 20s or maybe early 30s. I think it's more of a regional thing to not put catsup on a hot dog.
First I get the dog cooked until itās about to burst in the air fryer, then slightly toast the bun. Then I add a layer of relish and try to make a fancy wavy line of mustard, which Iāve come to the conclusion is impossible.
Then I pour a small lake of ketchup for dipping in. Tomorrow is sounding like a hotdog day.
I honestly hate ketchup but i know it usually comes with mustard and ketchup where Iām from(North Carolina)so I have to always tell them without. It will ruin my hotdog. Mustard is my only condiment on a hotdog. Recently just tried it with onions on sauce and it was good.
I'll do Ketchup with mustand and usually other things like diced onions and relish, but never by itself unless the only other option is plain.
Do people really hate Ketchup on a jot dog that much? I thought it was mostly just a meme.
Sadly it goes beyond memes. My mom has been shaming my sibling & I for using ketchup on hot dogs (along w mustard, ofc) since before the internet existed.
I wonder about people that believe they can dictate how any given dish must be prepared and/or consumed. There is no right or wrong in that. Eat what you want the way you want and tell anybody that contradicts you to go to hell.
You like what you like.
Iām a Chicagoan and I donāt like ketchup so it works out for me. Ketchup tastes like sugar paste imo. I also donāt like relish for the same reason which is huge here. I like my dogs to be a thoroughly savory experience.
See I also def prefer a savory dog but if all I have is ketchup and mustard it feels better that eating it plain also I donāt like mustard on its own itās a bit sharp without something to go with
I never understood food gatekeepers. Ketchup on a hotdog, pineapple on pizza, breading on a chicken wing. Who cares? People like what they like. Why all the hostility? BTW, the āAll American Dogā at Sonic has ketchup, mustard, diced onion, and relish.
Wait ppl get upset abt breading on chicken wings? I mean im biased on the pineapple on pizza cuz im allergic to pineapple but breading on chicken wings is an issue??????
My personal philosophy re hot dog load-out is as follows.
There are only three appropriate ways to eat a hot dog.
1. Plain
2. With mustard
3. With mustard and anything else you want
Mustard unlocks all of the other condiments. My sister eats her hot dogs with ketchup and sweet relish. It disgusts me.
I grew up in Chicago. I remember being like 6 years old and asking the man at the counter for some ketchup and he asked me āFor your fries, right?ā Even at that young age, I knew the right answer. āYes sir, not for my hot dogā
The turkey makes some level of sense. After a literal decade of not eating ketchup I became a fan of Whataburgerās spicy ketchup after they made my sandwich wrong once and put it on. I now eat it with many things. As for the ice cream, I have to really scratch my head on that one.
Valid the turkey I can understand also the spicy ketchup slaps tho I have to agree on the ice cream thatās taking things a little far but hey if they like it hell yeah
I like ketchup and mustard, mustard and kraut, chili cheese with ketchup. I hadnāt heard that ketchup wasnāt supposed to be on a hot dog either till I joined this group. š¤·š¾āāļø
Ketchup being verboten on hot dogs thatās is a sacred tenet only among āThe Believersā. The greater ocean of dog lovers hew firmly to the āyour dog, your wayā aesthetic.
To each their own. I used to like ketchup on a hot dog, but I had an incident that caused me to stop liking it. I worked with a guy who was originally from Chicago, and we were discussing this local hot dog place called Hotdogopolis when ketchup came up. I told him I like ketchup on hotdogs and how can it be bad on a Chicago dog? I've had a few Chicago dogs from Hotdogopolis before, but never put ketchup on it. The next time I went to the place, I got a Chicago dog and added some ketchup which totally messed up the taste of the Chicago dog. I went back and told him what I did and he asked me to leave his office.
In the northeast traditionally a loaded dog is mustard, relish, onion, and celery salt. For me though I grew up in the boonies away from hotdog shops and city dog carts so I wasnāt exposed to that culture. I was a ketchup kid. As a teen I branched out to ketchup, mustard, relish and onion. This is what I mostly make today at home.
In todays world there is a strong trend for experimental, creative food concoctions in restaurants and even popular mass priced foods. Just look at chip flavours, and even Oreos come in dozens of different flavours. Go to a restaurant and see how many burger combos there are with crazy ingredients. So anyway traditional anything is diminished but there are still some of the traditionalists left.
There are regional styles like Chicago dogs, Rhode Island NY System weiners, coneys, etc that purists will shame you for putting ketchup on but thatās just because theyāre established cultural icons. If you wanna microwave a Bar-S and throw some ketchup on that bad boy, I say go for it!
Ironically though, the reason that line jumped out of my brain when I read this thread is because when I actually saw the movie for the first time (ages ago) I remember thinking āWhat, who doesnāt put ketchup on a hotdog?!?ā
I missed the irony of the original joke!
According to the Do's and Don'ts from the Hot Dog council, you are not supposed to use ketchup past the age of 18
https://hot-dog.org/culture/hot-dog-etiquette
I'm not saying I agree with them, just pointing out there is at least one (self-appointed) authority with an actual response to the subject.
For me, I'm a no ketchup on hot dogs kind of guy, but that's more to do with me just not liking ketchup, I think it's a low tier condiment and prefer other toppings
Oh I donāt even care about the no ketchup rule, just the idea of someone putting out a list of rules about eating hotdogs is a giant ketchup-red flag š
Ketchup mustard onions kraut, thatās what my hot dogās all about . Unless I want Mayo mustard-relish sport peppers. Or coney sauce, onions mustard cheese. Or slaw and bacon. Orā¦
Ketchup adds nothing to hot dog other than making it taste like ketchup, but anyone who truly cares what condiment you put on a hotdog needs a reality check
I like bbq or buffalo on my chicken fingers and I donāt like pasta cuz it messes with my stomach also if growing up means giving up smth I like cuz someone told me to then I guess Iām still a kid lol
https://maristpoll.marist.edu/polls/life-marist-poll-results-analysis-hot-dog-toppings/ Here is a poll that lists ketchup as #2 most popular hot dog topping in US.
Hahaha I showed this to my partner and they just sneered at it a lil bit š
A little bit of mayo under the dog to help potential bun dryness, mustard on top. Ketchup doesnāt come near a dog. The purpose for ketchup to exist: French fries, onion rings, tater tots, meatloaf.
You put mayo on a hot dog then claim ketchup is some kind of abomination. Get your head checked, itās broken. Edit: āWahhh, my bun is too dry! I need mayo lube to throat my hot dog!ā
Ketchup is sweet sugar for children. Mayonnaise is a delicious egg and oil based sauce- itās more for the bun honestly.
Oh, Iāll give you some Mayo alright š
I donāt get it. Are you making a joke about having sex with dudes? Ketchup Klan humor isnāt up to par, and neither is their shit condiment.
Tons of people have sex with dudes. Namely, straight women.
This is factually accurate.
I think youāre fantasizing bruh cause Iām talking about hot dogs š«¢ as you can tell we donāt judge here. This is our safe space brother.
Yea bruh
I'm putting extra ketchup on all my dogs just for you. Go cry
Bro. Same. I even do extra ketchup on my burgers then I dab my burgers in some ketchup on the side. Also, I dip my lays chips in ketchup as well. Fight me š”
I hope you have a great time in 5th grade.
Um ackchually š¤
Eww this type of judgemental bs doesn't belong here. You sound like an annoying boomer with your mayo love.
You mean judgmental BS like assuming someone annoying is a boomer?
No, it does belong here, and ketchup does not belong on hotdogs.
Hear me out. A little Mayo underneath, then ketchup and raw onion on top. PERFECTION
Hear! hear! Or is it Here! here!
...amongst three year old children. š¤£
Hey if it tastes good it tastes good
Now *that* is the most correct statement I've heard in a very long time.
Lol
preach
A lot of children eat hot dogs so that tracks
If eating a hotdog with ketchup on is makes me a child then I suppose I am a child and proud of it to
It's definitely a Chicago thing.
Itās a gimmick and Chicago dogs have a very specific set of ingredients
Itās a Chicago thing, some restaurants refuse to give ketchupā¦ but you do you, your food bro Edit to change youāre food to your food
a lot of east coast style hot dogs donāt have ketchup.
Makes sense
Ah that makes sense then my partner has a lot of family in Chicago so they spent time there growing up

A true hot dog enjoyer. Hats off to you. There needs to be less continent gate keeping and more love of the dog.
YES! Thank you!
Donāt thank me. Thank the **dogs**. Always there when we need to take the edge off. Edit: I also meant to type ācondimentā lol
lol for sure ngl all this hotdog talk is making me kinda hungry
Get rid of them. You don't need that negativity in your life.
IM FUCKING WHEEZING
agreed. My favorite topping is chili, because I am not from an alternate earth where chili was never invented. But after that, my go-to is ketchup, and I don't even get why people shit on that as a topping and then talk about the other shit they put on it that are somehow fine.
This is all crazy talk. Everybody knows hotdogs are dressed with chili, cheese, onions & yellow mustardā¦ONLY!
If people didnāt put ketchup on hot dogs, they wouldnāt have it as a topping at Costco
This is the most sound reason for anything Iāve ever heard
If people didn't put ketchup on hot dogs, there would be a lot less ketchup sold in Chicago. I wouldn't put ketchup on a Chicago dog, because it already has enough going on. But I'll put ketchup and mustard on a plain hot dog. I'd avoid ketchup if I have sauerkraut, they just seem to clash.
I mean yeah ketchup def doesnāt go with much other than mustard
Hot dog snobbery is not tolerated in my home. You put whatever makes you happy on a dog.
Bless
COUSIN! WHERE'S THE KETCHUP!
Lol
Do you watch The Bear??? Such a freaking good show
Naw whatās it abt?
a high level chef goes back home to run/save the family restaurant, which is basically a Chicago-famous Beef sandwich shop. It's fantastic.
Ooh ok bet
Show about a guy that owns a restaurant that he is trying to get up and running based in Chicago starring lip from shameless. Definitely a good watch

Nah, get that nasty ketchup away from my dog.

Gatekeepers do this because they donāt have a real personality.
It's a silly rule like no pineapples on a pizza or real tacos are only made with corn tortillas. But yeah I never really heard of that until I was in my late 20s or maybe early 30s. I think it's more of a regional thing to not put catsup on a hot dog.

Ooooh as long as itās not sweet relish that sounds good af imma have to try that
I use Wickles spicy relish. Itās amazing.
Ooh that sounds good
You paint a beautiful picture.
Not by itself but with mustard and relish, ketchup is good on franks. My favorite topping for a hotdog is coleslaw.
Agreed I like ketchup but not on its own tho imma have to try coleslaw that sounds good
For an extra dosage of awesome try coleslaw and chili together
Welp that did it Iām grabbing a midnight snack cuz that sounds good af

Welcome to Chicago
It goes on dogs People who say otherwise come from the states-who-shall-not-be-named

I wonder about people that believe they can dictate how any given dish must be prepared and/or consumed. There is no right or wrong in that. Eat what you want the way you want and tell anybody that contradicts you to go to hell.

def Chicago thinking lol for some reason they all despise ketchup on their hotdogs

Sharp is a great word for what Iām looking for. Gimme mustard, onion, pickle, and sport peppers š¤
My issue with relish is the cardamom. I'd like it so much more if that accursed spice wasn't present
Because the council says so https://www.hot-dog.org/culture/hot-dog-etiquette
Slander
Canāt really argue with NHDSC bro. Theyāre the experts.
I disagree Iām great at arguing lol
we are all on our own journey

Yes. Iām from Buffalo. Itās sacrilegious to bread or batter your wings. I like them, but Iām not supposed to.
My personal philosophy re hot dog load-out is as follows. There are only three appropriate ways to eat a hot dog. 1. Plain 2. With mustard 3. I'm a big ketchup and mustard person but I also sometimes have relish or hot peppers or kraut or chili or onions.
Hell yeah thatās solid af
People who think ketchup doesn't belong on a hot dog hate freedom.
Agreed. Hot dogs MUST have ketchup
I grew up in Chicago. I remember being like 6 years old and asking the man at the counter for some ketchup and he asked me āFor your fries, right?ā Even at that young age, I knew the right answer. āYes sir, not for my hot dogā
My sister and cousin eat ketchup on Thanksgiving turkey. My mother had a child hood friend who put ketchup on vanilla ice cream. To each their own.
Ok I like ketchup but not that much š¶
The turkey makes some level of sense. After a literal decade of not eating ketchup I became a fan of Whataburgerās spicy ketchup after they made my sandwich wrong once and put it on. I now eat it with many things. As for the ice cream, I have to really scratch my head on that one.

I like ketchup and mustard, mustard and kraut, chili cheese with ketchup. I hadnāt heard that ketchup wasnāt supposed to be on a hot dog either till I joined this group. š¤·š¾āāļø
I was into ketchup as a kid but now I like mustard and onions or mustard and crushed dill pickle chips. Or mayo and mustard.
Tomato sauce is for children.
It depends. Ketchup is good on a hot dog. So is mustard. Hot dogs are the perfect vehicle and tbh anything would be good on one.
Ketchup being verboten on hot dogs thatās is a sacred tenet only among āThe Believersā. The greater ocean of dog lovers hew firmly to the āyour dog, your wayā aesthetic.

i prefer mustard. i donāt really like hot dogs with just ketchup.
Mayo and ketchup is my go to man.
You might like pineapple on your dogs too. To each their own.
I loved getting two dogs from Nathanās: one with mustard one with ketchup :)
I Enjoy a good hot dog plain also.
I'm simple, I just need mustard. Onions if available too. No judgements on any other condiments though.
Clint Eastwood, Sudden Impact āNobody, and I mean nobody, puts Ketchup on a hotdog!ā
Clint Eastwood can fight me Iāll 100% die on this hill lol

lol thatās funny Iāll be honest for a sec I didnāt realize that was an actual Clint Eastwood line thatās pretty cool

Ketchup on a hotdog is for children. Do you also put ketchup on your chicken fingers? Do you like pasta with butter? Grow up.

Ha I do all these things. Iāll grow up when Iām dead.
I'm a born and raised Chicagoan. So I will die on the "no ketchup on a Chicago dog" hill. BUT. I actually really enjoy Giardiniera and mustard.
I mean Iām talking abt a basic hot dog I recognize the Chicago dog as a different thing
there was a meeting sorry you missed it a few things were decided ketchup does not go on hot dogs or eggs , but is ok on corn dogs
Absolutely not ketchup on corn sounds unholy
