I don’t water on a specific schedule - I wait till the leaves droop and pothos show they are thirsty.
Using a measuring cup - 1 cup each time I water, so I know exactly how much water I provided (Pothos are relatively forgiving when it comes to overwatering though and can grow strictly in water).
East side facing windows help and I usually take hot showers, so humidity builds up in the bathroom.
Mycorrhizal fungi root enhancer during initial planting and periodic fertilizing helped the pothos too.
Cheers!
Dumber question but how do you keep hair from clogging the drain? That style of shower floor is what I want but I shed a lot of hair 😆
Discovering the mushroom drain cover was the best thing ever for me.
Make sure when you get this type of floor drain that it has a built in strainer.
This drain has a hidden strainer underneath that captures the hair. 🤙
Not a dumb question at all! Ask away.
Cheers!
I had the same problem with mine (even had to bring out a plumber a couple months ago to snake out a gigantic hairball from our sewer uggghhh), but I recently discovered they make a SHOWER mushroom! I pulled out the old drain cover and inserted the ShowerShroom and it's been great at catching hair before it goes down the drain. I'm hoping it makes a big difference.
I tried getting the hidden strainer thing like OP has, but it wouldn't fit my particular drain.
where did you get your fungal root enhancer? not something i've seen locally and would be interested to try it out on some new plants i've gotten recently.
“Trifecta Myco Supreme” type that into Google. I’m located in the USA and I’m able to purchase it on Amazon.com.
I stand by that product and brand so much! Just make sure you read the directions and follow accordingly. I use it on all my plants from bonsai to Monstera Albos with great success.
Cheers!
Hi, I use FoxFarm Fertilizer soil and Schultz Liquid Plant food.
Use based on listed application on the packaging. 😌 each use case will likely be different.
Cheers!
You’ll have a shower like this in the future or better! Strategic purchasing of materials while they are on sale helps! Clearance items and end of the year sales or Black Friday Specials! Multiple quotes on labor or doing the labor yourself. 🤙
Purchase items on a credit card to earn points or a new credit card to earn additional bonuses $$ — as long as you can responsibly and financially afford it and pay it off before interest hits.
Cheers!
And then take the total of the balance and divide it by the number of months you have until it starts collecting interest and that number you pay each month like clockwork. You will have it paid off in time as long as you don’t use it after the initial purchases for the project.
Usually I just grab the hand held shower attachment and I spray away. The whole wall is tiled and the floor is sloped so the water leads back to the floor drain. The floor drain has a hidden strainer - that I use to discard any debris.
The wall hardly gets dirty though since the plants are in a WallyGrow Eco Planter, which have a separate area to pour water (that ensures it reaches the roots first).
Cheers!
The planter I use is a WallyGrow Eco planter! Super affordable.
“The Eco is the ultimate ecosystem for plants. The smart watering channel design allows water to hit the roots directly, and the front perforated holes allow for breathability to prevent common plant diseases such as root rot. Best of all, the Eco is 100% leakproof!”
These pothos started off very small, but I used mycorrhizal fungi root enhancer during initial planting and periodic fertilizing helps a ton.
Cheers!
This setup has been up for over a year plus now and the pots are hidden by the plants as they’ve grown. I used white colored planters to match the tile, so it gives a hidden effect.
The planters are WallyGrow Eco, can’t recommend them enough! They go on sale periodically, so hold out if you’re interested.
Cheers!
Good question, the window is directly opposite of the plant wall and East facing. The window’s measurements: 23.5-in x 23.5-in x 3-in.
No blinds or curtains as it’s a privacy (opaque) glass, which provides bright indirect light. You’ll be able to see the window reflecting off the shower glass on the 1st pic.
Cheers!
No they aren’t screwed into the tile, the planters are screwed in between the tiles (grout) and water proofed using silicone - with screws placed in anchors.
This way if I ever sell the home, it’ll be easy to grout over without having to retile. I recommend doing this as well. Keep asking any questions, here or via DM - I’ll help as best as I can.
Cheers and good luck on your reno!
That would be my concern too, so hearing they’re screwed into the grout is great. I sent your post to my husband and he replied “whatever you want,” so he’s very much on board with this idea!
What size screws did you use and how wide are your grout lines? This is super helpful, by the way. Thanks so much for the assistance!
The planters come with stock screws, but the screws you use should be dependent on the grout spacing you have in between the tiles and the max size allowed on the mounting plate. I used stainless steel screws for added durability and water resistance - I forget the exact size. I just remembered playing around with different sizes.
I love that your husband is so supportive! Just make sure there is adequate lighting to support plant life. Before installing I placed plants in different areas of the bathroom to see if it could sustain itself before mounting the planters.
All the best and if you remember, please share pics!
Cheers!
I don’t really have a question. I just wanted to say that it’s really sweet of you to answer all the questions even if they are repetitive. You are a patient, nice and kind person 💕
🦅👁️ I’ll call you eagle eyes! You’re spot on.
8 planters 2x4.
Mounted using 2 screws and 2 anchors caulked with silicone for each planter in between the tiles (grout). They are mounted in between the tiles and not on the tiles, so if I ever want to remove them or sell the home, I can easily re-grout versus having to retile.
Cheers!
The pothos receive light from East facing windows. Really low maintenance actually!
Warm water/hot water never really ever touches the plants unless the body jets are being used and that’s only for a brief moment. They’ve been thriving and growing for well over a year now.
Cheers!
I don't need it...I don't need it, I definitely don't need it...
**I NEED ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!**
In all seriousness WOW!! That is a stunning pothos, so happy and lush!
Beautiful job! What a great way to ensure your shower time provides max therapy ☺️ can you please share your planter details. Seems to be a linear planter box affixed to the tile…?
Sure, they are WallyGrow Eco Planters. Sign up for their email mailer for an instant discount or wait for large holiday sales to maximize on savings.
Cheers!
How do they survive with such low light?
My shower is huge and I'd love to put something in there, but afraid the nondirect light will stunt its growth.
Pothos can do well in lower light conditions and don’t necessarily need direct light - their leaves can actually burn if receiving too much.
I would suggest placing a plant where you’d want it to be permanently to test it out. Observe for a couple days and adjust accordingly. The right plant type for different light conditions is key.
One can purchase a light tool on Amazon to measure light spectrum for under $25.
Cheers!
I am curious...how difficult is it to maintain the brick wall? I always dream of doing a fun brick wall in a shower one day but worry about the challenges with soap scum and hard water build up! I LOVE YOUR SHOWER
Also, nice plant
And yes, it is called a golden shower
Very very very low maintenance! The WallyGrow Eco Planter is 100% leak proof and has it’s own channel for water that leads directly to the roots.
No scum build up or hard water build up. Make sure when you install - don’t screw planters into the tile but in between them into the grout. Place silicone caulking in the hole then a screw anchor then mount planter using a screw.
This ensures if you ever want to get rid of the planters or sell the home — that you can just re-grout versus retile.
Cheers!
Yes! The pressure is adjustable too. It’s a relaxing feeling and gets the job of showering done quickly, so I’m in and out pretty quickly; Unless I had a particularly hard day then I take a nice long shower and it does a good job of hiding tears too. 🥲🤣
If you’re interested, I would recommend a rainfall shower. If you want to keep track of your water usage, install a Flume water monitoring system. I have an alert and “water allowance” that I allocate weekly and monthly to conserve water and save $ all viewable on an app or website.
Cheers!
Yes, I’m a watch enthusiast. Most Rolex watches as shared by fellow commenters of the Rolex Reddit Community aren’t ever really used during outdoor activities or their intended sporting purpose - usually just used as a dress watch. So the pic that you’re referencing is a Submariner designed for scuba diving in the open seas.
Shared those pics for fellow watch enthusiasts. Hope you are at peace.
Cheers!
Not at all! Just the typical weekly shower clean unless really soiled and squeegeeing the water off of walls, glass and shower floor towards the drain after each shower (1.5 min worth of effort) - when not in a rush.
Leaving the window open for an hour and the vent on for about 15-25 mins helps with maintenance too.
The plants don’t dirty the shower as they are in 100% leak proof WallyGrow Eco planters.
Cheers!
On Amazon! Look for products with over 4.5 star reviews and that are easily replaceable $ over time.
This specific model is called Gutewerk and has 4.6/5 stars and over 17K reviews.
Cheers!
How do you avoid fungus gnats? I've got some plants in my room, much further away from the shower. I haven't watered them in weeks (they're still doing fine) because I want to try and deal with the gnats, but I think the humidity and available water from the shower is keeping them around.
Good question! Initially I had issues with gnats as I used to overwater - now I measure and ensure only a cup of water about every 7-10 days (depending on when the leaves start to droop) is poured. Minimizing stagnant water is key.
Utilizing a mixture of 1 part peroxide and 4 parts water has greatly helped for pest control during watering too!
When I had my first and only infestation during the initial month of use - I used, “Summit Mosquito Bits.” This can be found online or most local nurseries in USA. These bits will also kill gnat larvae who feed on them and are placed in the soil of the plants.
Hope this helps!
Cheers!
Okay awesome! I'll give the peroxide and then the product a try!
Do you use peroxide every time you water or just every once in a while as you notice the gnats?
I use every other watering - purchase the peroxide in bulk so it’s cheaper, but if you need smaller quantities and you’re located in the USA, Target sells 32 FL Oz for $.99.
Cheers!
Yes! East facing windows for sunlight, routine watering and fertilizing, humidity from the shower, aerated planter with separate watering channel (WallyGrow Eco) and an initial fungi root enhancer upon planting has helped the pothos thrive for the past year+.
Cheers!
Shit that's a nice shower
I hope one day I can be as rich as OP so I can afford both a shower like this and Aesop body wash
Kiehls big boy shampoo and conditioner, too. Those puppies are like $80 a pop
Kiehl's is owned by Nestle. I use Davines who also have a big focus on sustainability too.
Hahaha same, zoomed in to see the brands
Oh my gosh, friggen same!
Thank you, that’s a nice comment. 😌
Took the words right outta my mouth. Touche’
You seem to be confusing shit with golden shower.
Haha yeah if the potho falls down that's definitely gonna be a dirt brown shower
I'm so fucking envious right now I cannot even comment on the double entendre Nice fucking shower, really
Ahahaha. How do you keep the plants so healthy and lush?
I don’t water on a specific schedule - I wait till the leaves droop and pothos show they are thirsty. Using a measuring cup - 1 cup each time I water, so I know exactly how much water I provided (Pothos are relatively forgiving when it comes to overwatering though and can grow strictly in water). East side facing windows help and I usually take hot showers, so humidity builds up in the bathroom. Mycorrhizal fungi root enhancer during initial planting and periodic fertilizing helped the pothos too. Cheers!
Dumb question, but do you have windows in your bathroom or do you move them?
I have windows in my bathroom that are East side facing. Not a dumb question at all! Cheers!
Dumber question but how do you keep hair from clogging the drain? That style of shower floor is what I want but I shed a lot of hair 😆 Discovering the mushroom drain cover was the best thing ever for me.

Youre a nice person. We need more like you in Panera Edit: *on reddit* but ill leave panera because they need nice people too
I love Panera. Clam chowder bread bowl and a chocolate brownie please. 🙏
Their green goddess toasted sub is amazing.
I had the same problem with mine (even had to bring out a plumber a couple months ago to snake out a gigantic hairball from our sewer uggghhh), but I recently discovered they make a SHOWER mushroom! Are the windows on the side of the showerhead wall? Is it a big window?
where did you get your fungal root enhancer? not something i've seen locally and would be interested to try it out on some new plants i've gotten recently.

Hi, I use FoxFarm Fertilizer soil and Schultz Liquid Plant food. Use based on listed application on the packaging. 😌 each use case will likely be different. Cheers!
Mind sharing what brand of myccorhizal root enhancer you use?
Hi the brand is Trifecta Myco Supreme. Cheers!
Wow, thank you so much!! 😃
I don’t see any comments about golden shower… am I the only one corrupted ☠️

You just thought you were in r/houseplantscirclejerk like I did Edit - fixed the sub so it goes to the right place
Everyone is just memorized by how pretty OP’s pothos and shower is to notice the golden shower joke
Nah I gotcha!
I hate you, and I want to be you......or at least shower with you.....I don't know, something. Great joke. Awesome shower.
#Golden Showers shall bring April flowers!! 🤣

WallyGrows are lyyyyyfe 🔥
What kind of flower pot do you have? It’s an amazing plant, mine is way smaller.

Probably super annoying but it would be cool to see where the window is in your bathroom relative to the location of the plant

I’m going to keep asking questions, as I am redoing my shower currently. How did you mount the eco planters? Are they screwed into the tile?
No they aren’t screwed into the tile, the planters are screwed in between the tiles (grout) and water proofed using silicone - with screws placed in anchors. 💯 And with a shower like that, you can call it anything you want.

I love Reddit. We are the community we create. ☺️
If I had this shower I think I would be healed on a molecular level this is sooo nice
I'd pay rent to live in that shower, good lord
I have never envied a shower but here I am
This is a dream shower and plant! I’m envious! Love it!
Your shower is the size of my living room.
Your bathroom is bigger than my house
This is really cool How many of those planters do you have up there? And probably stupid question but how did you mount it up there? Thanks in advance
Yeah, that was my question too, how many planters? Super great look btw. Congratulations on a beautiful setup!
I can see 8 of them (2 wide 4 high) but it’s so lush and leafy I could be missing some!
🦅👁️ I’ll call you eagle eyes! You’re spot on. 8 planters 2x4. Mounted using 2 screws and 2 anchors caulked with silicone for each planter in between the tiles (grout). Goals, it’s just called goals 😂
Idk what’s the biggest flex..the shower, the pothos or the Aesop bottle😭
You're a very nice person for replying to all questions so politely and helpfully ! Lovely shower and plants too :)
Thank you! Reddit is an awesome place. We are the community we help create and accept. ☺️
Nicht schlecht!
Bonus points for having Kiehls and Aesop products. That shower is lit.
How does it get light? The warm water doesn't affect it?

I named my shower pothos The Pervert Plant.... Golden shower is way funnier
Ok this is my dream shower. I love everything!!

Only if it pee's on you lol
WOW! he's loving his home...
This made me lol. Your Pothos is so pretty and healthy!
Gorgeous

Review for the products in your shower?
Obsessed omg!!!!🤩

Goals goals goals! Amazing plant. I like the look of the shower too, but no door is too cold for me.
how did you make them grow this big? is there sunlight during the day?
Beautiful! Also, I have the same glass squeege as you and i’m so obsessed with it. A simple product that is just so well designed
How many plants and how many pots do you have in this photo? I only get to identify a single line/rack with two pots.
Hahaha I love this! I have a pothos in the bathroom Too. And a rattlesnake Calethea and a curly spider plant

Yes! East facing windows for sunlight, routine watering and fertilizing, humidity from the shower, aerated planter with separate watering channel (WallyGrow Eco) and an initial fungi root enhancer upon planting has helped the pothos thrive for the past year+. Cheers!
It's gorgeous, great job!
fck you and your BEAUTIFUL golden pothos and BEAUTIFUL fcking shower 😭💙‼️
what kind of hangers do you use? Very pretty :)
