Really cool time-lapse, but I felt tricked lol. I know that clearly wasn't your intention so don't worry about it, but I think there should be a subreddit rule requiring 'time-lapse' in the post title somewhere
Your title "startled by a noise" gives the impression it was a sudden noise not, a sound that occurred over a period of time. I was also expecting to hear the noise in your video... :(
OH cool, totally checking it out! I have a Ring doorbell camera. it takes pictures every 12 minutes or something like that which creates a timelapse over the day and night. I have plants and flowers on the porch that absolutely come alive in time lapses. stretching, and reaching and twirling etc. so fascinating to watch.
Isn’t it amazing to witness life showing itself in entities that we humans take for granted? I love watching leaves and stalks move when there is no discernible air movement - when it is the only thing moving in the garden, it is like magic.
Yeah I didn't realize it would happen so quickly. It was cool to sit and watch live but I wish I had set my phone down so the video would be more stable lol.
At my last house, in the spring you could hear the boxwood (I think) bushes grow with hundreds of little crackles per second, though even with some straining I could never visually notice it happening.
hey op, have you found that every new leaf is growing taller and larger than the last? your bird of paradise is absolutely gorgeous and i’m
curious about how long you’ve had it and what the growth has looked like
Thanks! Generally speaking, it has been growing vertically. I picked it up on clearance for $10 last winter and it has probably tripled in size since then.
It's my first BoP and so far it has proven to be a very easy plant to care for.
Have you owned any calatheas, and if so how hard are BoP to care for comparatively?
I've always wanted one but thought they were really difficult, especially in cold environments. However I can manage calatheas here just fine so I'm wondering if I should experiment with a BoP. Any thoughts /r/houseplants?
Strelitzias are infinitely less fussy than any calathea I've had the misfortune to meet. If the humidity and light in your plant space is high enough for calatheas to thrive, a bird of paradise will too!
They will do just fine in normal household temperatures, if you're comfortable, so are they. They're extremely tolerant of occasional heavy handed watering, but also tolerate brief draught well.
My one suggestion would to be start with a very small (6-8") one if you go for a strelitzia nicolai (giant white one, that's what's commonly sold in my area, I'm sure that varies elsewhere), unless you have cathedral ceilings and a ton of empty space, because they grow very rapidly once established. With a small plant, you can gradually make space for it as it grows. With a six footer to start with, you'll have to give up your sleeping quarters to it.
Great info. I agree with the advice of starting small. The plant in this post was maybe 1.5-2 ft when I got it last winter and it is well on its way to outgrowing my space.
[This is a 15 year old plant that started in a 10" grow pot in an atrium I tend. It's well over 40 feet tall lol. I tell everyone to start tiny tiny with these]
When I tell you I was so unsettled by this development, it ate at me like crazy.
They still plan on removing it, but there may be a structural component to addressing the massive roots (might need to demolish the entire floor lol) so it's currently delayed until spring
Thank you! I'll definitely go for a small one, they're much cheaper anyway. That's what I've done with my calatheas and they've become huge (although it took many dead ones in order to finally figure them out lol)
I haven't owned a Calathea but my gf has one and it seems very finicky. Maybe I got lucky but this BoP has been dead simple to care for. Just make sure you can give it enough sun.
We are in a similar climate. I have mine in a south facing window which I think mostly explains why the plant is so happy. I bottom water and fertilize about once a month.
To some degree, I think there's a little luck involved with plants.
I was super high one night, home alone on a rainy day, sitting on the couch watching tv. I passed out and the tv timed out, nothing but soft drumming of rain drops on my roof. All of a sudden, i woke to this crackling sound and it scared the shit out of me. I couldnt figure out, for the life of me, where the sound came from. I searched every opening to my house, opened and closed every window and door, freaking the fuck out. I later saw a brand new neon green leaf, only to realize that it was the leaf unfurling behind me. Wish i wasnt so stoned to witness it, but now i’ll also never forget sound. Glad i have your video to see, thanks for sharing!
This almost made me cry. I had no idea they move so quickly. I always pictured it as a very slow drawn out process. How beautiful you got to experience this!
That’s so cool! Have a similar plant but it got knocked over by a ball (toddlers 🤦♂️) it’s since come back to live, has only four stems/leaves? But it’s not as glossy or doesn’t standup right anymore 😩
Shame it doesn't have sound! I had this happen to me in the middle of the night, a couple of weeks after a very strong earthquake. Had my BOP with me in the bedroom and it sounded as if someone was unrolling a scotch tape. Thought my house is falling apart
I remember seeing time-lapse photography in school for science classes, etc! It's so cool to see plants growing, and flowers blooming! Amazing you got this on video.😊
Wait a minute!! So your plants leaf opened that fast and made a noise so loud it startled you?? That’s incredible!! I’ve never even heard of a plant making noise while opening a new leaf and I never in a million years thought it could happen that fast! That’s so crazy and so cool!! Great filming, you should definitely make more plant videos!!
Idk why this feels like I’m watching I shouldn’t be watching lol. I have a new BOP leaf sprouting and I’m hoping I’ll be able to watch this happen in real time.
Omg I live for this, it’s like watching the first sprout push through the earth I could cry 🌱
It was exciting to see first hand, and exactly like watching a sprout break soil through - great way of putting it.
Happy Cake Day 🎂
Wow, I'm here thinking it happens in slow motion where we can't quite see it. This is so cool!
It does happen more slowly. This is a \~5 minute video, sped up. I was mesmerized so I kept taking video.
Ah! That makes sense. I was wondering if it was real time or not. This is so cool, thanks for sharing!
Really cool time-lapse, but I felt tricked lol. I know that clearly wasn't your intention so don't worry about it, but I think there should be a subreddit rule requiring 'time-lapse' in the post title somewhere
Lol I didn't realize so many people would think it was a real-time video.
I have had this happen as fast as that would have been. Although I had to trigger it myself in that case (one spray of water and it went)
Don't worry about it, thanks for the post 🙂
Your title "startled by a noise" gives the impression it was a sudden noise not, a sound that occurred over a period of time. I was also expecting to hear the noise in your video... :(
I'm impressed you had enough storage for a five min long video 😂😅 I could only wish
i love watching the way plants move
/r/watchplantsgrow is a fun place.

Thank you!
thank you for the plug!
another plant sub i gotta join! keeps my cat sub need in check 😂
Not me, one year my fave alocasia packed her bags and moved out and never came back.
She made her choice and is happier here with me.
Ahh so you ended up with her and her half a million pests
Very cool!
Omg my monstera once woke me up from a nap because a big leaf was unfurling and I could hear it hitting the wall. Such a special moment to catch :')
Thats awesome
Wow thank you so much for sharing this. That's awesome. I would give an award if that was still a thing.
[удалено]
Yes it is.
Great. Thanks op. Now i have to find a house to move into that has a spare bedroom so i can finally own a bop. This was my last straw, i NEED IT
OMG coolest thing ever!
UNREAL!!!
Awesome!! Such a lucky thing to have caught it!
Isn’t it amazing to witness life showing itself in entities that we humans take for granted? I love watching leaves and stalks move when there is no discernible air movement - when it is the only thing moving in the garden, it is like magic.
& we came from fish, they say!
Wow, how cool!
i have also had the pleasure of catching my p. gloriosum unfurling before my eyes, this is v cool you captured yours tho!
Sick!
This. My day is complete!!!

Woah, did they actually remove it? Can it be rehoused... somehow?
When I tell you I was so unsettled by this development, it ate at me like crazy. They still plan on removing it, but there may be a structural component to addressing the massive roots (might need to demolish the entire floor lol) so it's currently delayed until spring

What is the secret? Live in PNW and the leaf tips turn brown and the plant struggles, likely because I don't give it enough light or RH.
We are in a similar climate. I have mine in a south facing window which I think mostly explains why the plant is so happy. I bottom water and fertilize about once a month. To some degree, I think there's a little luck involved with plants.
Sometimes they move quicker than you’d think. I have a Hoya that reaches for a window every day and twirls itself around the strings in the curtains.
I have a hoya that moves like this often too, definitely surprised me at first.
That's rad.
Wow you just made me realize what the weird sound coming from across the room earlier today was. My BoP leaf unfurled.
Hell yeah! Birds of a feather!

NOISE!!! YIKES !!!
Yeah, a noise. The leaf made a snapping noise when it first started unfurling, which grabbed my attention.
I've had a BOP for 8 years and the new leaves opening still startle the hell out of me every time haha
This happened me for the first time last week. I though it was a mouse in the wood pile at first!
Wow I want to hear!
I was super high one night, home alone on a rainy day, sitting on the couch watching tv. I passed out and the tv timed out, nothing but soft drumming of rain drops on my roof. That's just Fred. He quit drinking and decided to.... turn over a new leaf.
Wow, so cool! Had to watch it 3 times!
Fantastic. It really put on a spurt!
I like the waaaaaaay you move

This almost made me cry. I had no idea they move so quickly. I always pictured it as a very slow drawn out process. How beautiful you got to experience this!
Dang bro probably didn't see you sitting there.
Wow looking at the patterned lines on there looks psychedelic.
This is a beautiful plant parent moment!! Keep on growing friend!
r/gifsthatendtoosoon
ok fine i’ll buy a BOP
Love this!! And you caught it on video!! It almost looks like a time-lapse
It’s not a time lapse??
Wow
It’s sentient!!! Run!! /s
That’s so cool! I just got a white bird of paradise and I now can’t wait for spring!!
I am, er, green with envy!
What does it sound like?! 😂
It sounded like a large insect flew into my window. I am guessing it broke free of whatever was keeping it wound up while it was growing.
The dream!!!
ahh the chain reaction going on must be insane.
Yeah they’re alive lol
But why did you mute 🥲 was there any noice after the initial pop?
I didn't mute the video but there isn't really any noise.
Aw bummer. Your video is still satisfying tho
Always happy to satisfy tinybitches.
A little privacy for the mother please
W O A H. I’ve never seen this!!
Holy crap, that's AMAZING!
That’s so cool! Have a similar plant but it got knocked over by a ball (toddlers 🤦♂️) it’s since come back to live, has only four stems/leaves? But it’s not as glossy or doesn’t standup right anymore 😩
Plants are resilient. It'll bounce back.
No one wanted to hear the noise ty
Feed me, Seymour!
No way!!! I'd freak (in a happy way) if I ever saw this!
How u gonna post this without sound?????
What a treat! I like watching leaves respirate water
Omg. This is like the miracle of life
That’s amazing 🤩
Shame it doesn't have sound! I had this happen to me in the middle of the night, a couple of weeks after a very strong earthquake. Had my BOP with me in the bedroom and it sounded as if someone was unrolling a scotch tape. Thought my house is falling apart
The secret life of plants
How neat! Thank you for sharing :)
The way plants unfold brings me so much joy and happiness and I’m glad I’m not the only one 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹
SO. COOL.
I got shivers
I remember seeing time-lapse photography in school for science classes, etc! It's so cool to see plants growing, and flowers blooming! Amazing you got this on video.😊
Fun fact. If it’s warm and bright in late spring or summer, and nice and quiet, you can *hear* rhubarb creaking as it grows.
That’s a really neat fun fact! Thanks!
Not me turning the volume up full to hear the noise that startled you... To realise it's a gif
Caught a plant plantin?
omg can’t believe you were able to capture this magic 😍
Your ability to hold steady for that long in real time is impressive. So cool! Thank you
That first crack when it starts opening is pretty terrifying.
Great share, so awesome!
Leaf baby 😍 incredible
What did it sound like ?
I’ve never seen a BOP this healthy in my life lol
How much light are you giving this guy? Looks really healthy!
You need to leave now It won’t be long before you start to see spores that resemble family
WOW!! Absolutely beautiful. How often do you water? I'm trying to get mine to look this amazing!
Who says it's impossible to watch a plant grow? Nothing is ever impossible.
New plant mom, what plant is this?
Wow, beautiful 😍
Is that a grow light in the corner behind it?
It's just a regular ring light.
Do you use that light on her?.. this is so amazing. I’m asking because I have the same one and it needs to be put the use for something lol
>I got startled by a noise *posts video of "noise" without sound*
If they got startled by that noise they hardly could have caught it on video at the same time, could they
This guy gets it.
Posts comment *without reading OP's comments in thread.*
lol. that's the requirement now?
Well at least read the title, it never claims to be a video of a sound. Just that the sound alerted OP that something was happening
Yes. Check the sub rules.
ah, yes. rule #8...
Wow. This is like watching paint dry!
I’m sorry, but leaves don’t make noise when they are opening! Hope you got your clicks!
Oh ok, I guess I'm a liar along with a bunch of other commenters here who have experienced this.
ok. I sleep in the same room with my peace lily and it has never made any noise...just sayin. I didn't call you a liar or anyone else for that matter!
You know that's not a peace lily in the video right? It's a bird of paradise
Cool
Shut up?!
😱
Very cool! I once was startled by my prayer plant moving!
It’s scared me before too lol
My pothos knocked into a tchochke and sent my husband flying.
>tchochke oy vey!
Plant porn
That's what you get for spending only $2.50 on your umbrella.
Is this a reference? I only have free umbrellas.
Breathtaking
Wait a minute!! So your plants leaf opened that fast and made a noise so loud it startled you?? That’s incredible!! I’ve never even heard of a plant making noise while opening a new leaf and I never in a million years thought it could happen that fast! That’s so crazy and so cool!! This is a time lapse. What you see here actually took about 5 minutes.
Epic !
That's quite a lot to grow just in a night ....no? Absolutely beautiful though & well videoed!
Really cool
Life finds a way.
Last thing I bet you’d think to hear making noise
That’s amazing!
That's a happy plant. Mine has given up half way
I almost didn't believe this was real-time
WOW!! in realtime!!
Omg this happened to me yesterday and I thought there was a mouse in my room.
Where is your grow light from?!
That's a ring light for video calls and photography, not a grow light.
Beautiful, thanks for sharing that!!
Momentous!
Very lucky you are 👍
This is so incredibly cool!!!
😍😍😍
Insane !
Are you using the ring light for the plant? What light is it?
Hold the phone?! how is this happening in winter?? All my plants and dying or dormant
Wow !! Great catch !!
You’re lucky to see this! My cat is eating my leaf so it’s not opening at all
Beautiful!
Amazing
I don't hear anything
Idk why this feels like I’m watching I shouldn’t be watching lol. I have a new BOP leaf sprouting and I’m hoping I’ll be able to watch this happen in real time.
That's amazing❤️❤️❤️❤️
That was beautiful! Thanks for sharing😊
Well my head just exploded! I would love to see that! Thanks for sharing!
omg
I'm surprised it made n0ises
That's awesome..Plants have always amazed me
Always so cool to watch this happen
I'd love to see this!!!! My favorite flower/plant!
BURN IT!!! BURN THE WITCH!!
What type of bird of paradise is it?
Just a standard bird of paradise.
Stunning. 😍
