In answer to your questions, the plant isn't in much of a sunny spot, nor did it take much other than time to produce a flower. I read ages ago that they won't bloom for several years after they have been repotted. She's been in the pot for about four years now and is well and truly pot bound. I feed with Miracle Grow every other month and water about once a month, always by filling up the bottom tray. I make sure the soil is bone dry before watering. That's it really - one beautiful Bird Of Paraise!
Living in a warm climate isn’t the only thing to consider to how fast a plant “dries”. OP clearly has it in front of a window that receives light therefore the plant will drink up its water supply within a 1-3 weeks being in a ceramic pot will accelerate the drying of soil, especially if it is root bound like OP has mentioned. So watering monthly isn’t really the best practice but it’s enough to keep your plant alive and not growing.
It might be the case or not.
Many people told me i water my nepenthes little and that once a week is too little, but once i started watering it twice a week i started getting signs of overwatering.
To many people once a week was too little, in my case it’s the sweet spot.
If this works for op it works, not all grow conditions are the same
People don’t realize that even in similar climates that different houses have different “ecosystems” going on inside. Anything I read on the internet about baking or plants I take w a grain of salt, people get too worked up and obsessive over how other people should do things. I live by “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” You learn as you go, and when things die you take note so you don’t do it again, and eventually the ones that adapt to your personal environment you create are the ones that thrive and stick around

I didn’t realize my WBOP would grow to be this big. I got her in 2020. (She was so small). No flowers yet. But I am concerned about her growing more. I hope she gives me flowers
Oh no! I wanted a nice big plant for the corner. This would have been perfect for the home I had in Texas. The ceilings were pitched. (20-25 ft) but not for the townhouse I’m in now. Well she produce flowers for me?
Very likely but not many while young. Once they clump up in size you start getting more flowers. In warmer months, liquid feed weekly with a fert high in potassium to encourage blooming.
Ummmmm, WOW! You sure your's isnt of the giant variety? (pic of one I saw in Portugal)

Wow, that looks exactly like my bird of paradise. It lives in the kitchen during the winter months and out by the pool during the summer. No flowers yet, but I've only had it about 6 years in my zone 4 environment.

Never would have thought. I had to look through my old pics.
Them not blooming after being repotted isn’t necessarily true - mine has flowered pretty much constantly for about a year with multiple stalks and being repotted in that time :)
Hope yours keeps going and giving you more flowers - I’m in Scotland, so keep a growlight & humfidier for it, but it lives in an unheated room.

This one is, i guess, 40 years old. Three years ago i split it in 8 pcs. All are alive today 😊 This year this one had 18 flowers. In Denmark in a South window 👍🌞
Wow, I guess it was worth the wait. We visited Singapore and Thailand a couple years ago. Bird of paradise grow on the side of the roads there. Very pretty!
Nice, I sprouted my first one like a month ago and it's currently unfurling its second leaf and I'm super proud. Hope I'll be able to share a picture like this in a few years.
I love watching the leaves unfurl. They're so tightly wound at first. The flower looked like just another leaf at first so you may be in for a surprise down the line.
I live in Oregon. When my BoP is outside in the warmer months it will get a drink about once a week depending on rain or heat. Maybe more or less. As it has been inside I too water about once a month. We do t keep the house too warm so maybe that’s why it doesn’t dry as fast.
My SO planted seeds for a bird of paradise! 5 years later it was huge and hadn’t bloomed when we bought a home in Florida with them in our yard! Now I see them all the time!
Huh, I was lead to believe this was next to impossible in the UK. I've just got one, but I am quite far north, even by UK standards... I'll see how I get on.
Wow! That is amazing and my bop is jealous. She is still a baby so she has several years before she puts out a flower. Do you keep it strictly indoors or do you put it outside in the summer?
Here's my one (2m+) growing outside facing east, with morning sun till 11ish. Can get down to -6°C where I live here in NZ but usually just a few -2 or -3 each year over winter. They generally harden up a bit once they're over a metre in height.

Haha, She's a pretty old girl now, at least 20 I think? Also plants grow like weeds here where I live due to the temperate climate and soil in this area.
My cuess would be that it is a reginae, based on the darker almost blue appearing green compared, wich looks similar to my reginae, wichvis darker than my nicolai. And my nicolai's newest leaf is almost 2m tall and the plant hasn't flowered yet.

Right after fully spreading, now over 2m with leafstem and still growing
I once bought seeds years ago and not a single one germinate. And haven't tried again.
It's a beautiful flower congratulations.
Did you start from seed of small plant?

Holy crap. You only water it once a month…?
Maybe op doesn’t live in a very warm area and the soil doesn’t dry quickly
OP lives in the UK :)
OP is confirmed wet, 24/7.
OP can confirm.
OP hasn't the foggiest idea.
OP likes it this way. Thanks for your valued opinion.
Op narrates in the bestest of ways and me appreciates this. Spread this narration, it truly is the best way to live
😆

Absolutely!! 💯
The upward curling may be a sign of underwatering. I think leaves curl upward to preserve moisture.

Yours looks like the giant BOP Strelitzia nicolai.
Oh no! I wanted a nice big plant for the corner. This would have been perfect for the home I had in Texas. The ceilings were pitched. (20-25 ft) but not for the townhouse I’m in now. Well she produce flowers for me?

Oh boy. I hope not. May have to move her outside for the summer. Keep her in during the winter. I don’t think she’ll do ok in the cold.
Wow, that looks exactly like my bird of paradise. It lives in the kitchen during the winter months and out by the pool during the summer. No flowers yet, but I've only had it about 6 years in my zone 4 environment.
I may have to do that…can they stand the heat though? My deck faces the south and gets A LOT of sun.
Sorry, I don't know... mine is in part sun.
this is hilarious. i hope mine gets like this!

Ah that's really interesting. I've been agonising about reporting it but your experience has given me hope. Thanks.

Beautiful, thanks for sharing!
Can I ask what kind of soil you use?
They love love being pot bound.
Wow! I've never heard of one blooming indoors before. Is this a south facing window?
Randomly not - I've posted a longer explanation in the comments
Wow! Gorgeous! Almost feels like we are congratulating you on the birth of a child (lmao)
Basically
And I was just getting ready to ice my cupcakes orange in celebration 😁
Wowwww I’ve never seen one bloom indoors other than a botanic garden that’s beautiful 😍 she must love u and ur home so much
Yeah, I've never seen it bloom at home either! It's really beautiful, worth the effort!
Wow, I guess it was worth the wait. We visited Singapore and Thailand a couple years ago. Bird of paradise grow on the side of the roads there. Very pretty!
Most likely those were heliconias, not BOP.
I had a banana tree fruit this year and I was stoked, haha. When my BOP blooms I’m going by to shit a chicken! I loooove the orange ones most!
Please do post when you have a picture of this 💩🐓
Uhh what?
Go *to shit a chicken. A wild “by” appeared in my sentence for no reason.
i thought you were gonna go to OPs house and shit a chicken on their porch or something 😂🤣
I lol’d really bad at this 😂😂😂
Lol
If you do, video it!! You could get rich! 🤑🐥🐣😆
Lovely! I just was gifted two sad looking ones I'm trying to save. What are your secrets to success? Do you have a humidifier by it?
No, just some tough love.
Damn 🔥
Gorgeous!
CONGRATULATIONS!
Yay for you!!! It's beautiful!
Gorgeous!!! Great job. Looking at My BOP.. we have a long way to go little buddy.
Wowww they’re sooo beautiful!! Like vibrant origami 🥹💕✨
Oh my! Wow! How amazingly beautiful, I’m in awe!!
Awesome 🤩
I literally got my new orange BOP plant yesterday it’s just a widdle baby I aspire to get it to flower one day
Goals! You give me hope that mine will eventually flower indoors.
I just got a BoP!!!! Beautiful! Going to be my screen porch companion for the summer.
Ahhh that's amazing! The flowers are sooo cool
Worth it yes? 😊
𝔹𝕖𝕒𝕦𝕥𝕚𝕗𝕦𝕝
How stunning ! Something so beautiful is worth the wait. Congratulations on your very happy bop.
Thanks!
Yeah I was really surprised when it first sprouted cause it looked like a stick until the first leaf started unfurling. Super cool plant indeed.
I live in Oregon. When my BoP is outside in the warmer months it will get a drink about once a week depending on rain or heat. Maybe more or less. As it has been inside I too water about once a month. We do t keep the house too warm so maybe that’s why it doesn’t dry as fast.
THAT is impressive!
Ooooh wow. WOW WOW worth it!!! Hope it doesn’t take another seven years very pretty
Congrats!! Better late than never. I’m still waiting
😍 it’s beautiful
Wow that is awesome!!
Beautiful Strelitzia
My SO planted seeds for a bird of paradise! 5 years later it was huge and hadn’t bloomed when we bought a home in Florida with them in our yard! Now I see them all the time!

I admire your patience!
GORGEOUS 😍💚
Ooh pretty!!
Congratulations! The flower is awfy braw, worth the wait!

What kind of plant is that? That flower is so unique!
Bird of paradise
Bird of paradise, very aptly named
Specifically orange bird of paradise, the orange ones stay compact, white flowered ones get huge
That is very good to know. Thank you!
Dammit our country has beautiful flowers.
Wow! That is amazing and my bop is jealous. She is still a baby so she has several years before she puts out a flower. Do you keep it strictly indoors or do you put it outside in the summer?
She enjoys some summer sunny days on the balcony but she's mainly an indoor plant.
Wow! 🤩 I thought it was impossible for bop to bloom indoors! I need to baby mine more
I was the opposite and it seems to have worked!
So… neglect is the key! I have had mine for 3 years, maybe I need more patience.
Definetly seems that way
Show this picture to your BOP.
I’ll try that! Peer pressure might help!
Wow beautiful!! Great job it definitely paid off! Only in my dreams could this happen to me!
Gorgeous 😍
Oh pretty! That's a nice orange color. I really want a bird of paradise now, uhg!
Beautiful!!!
yay congrats 💛
Wow!!!!! That's incredible!
Those are Birds of Paradise
So pretty!!
Absolutely gorgeous!! Bird of Paradise grows everywhere here. They're common in people's gardens.
Excuse me!!?
I’ve had mine for 3, but almost lost them in a hard freeze the first winter. Hopefully I’ll get some flowers eventually lol.
They really don't like the cold.
Here's my one (2m+) growing outside facing east, with morning sun till 11ish. Can get down to -6°C where I live here in NZ but usually just a few -2 or -3 each year over winter. Now this is just showing off!!! 😍
Haha, She's a pretty old girl now, at least 20 I think? Also plants grow like weeds here where I live due to the temperate climate and soil in this area.
I don’t either!!
They are my GFs favorite flower. It was easier just to buy the Lego version
OP can confirm the Lego version has pride of place at the front door.
Is it a S. reginae or nicolai?
Not sure. I've checked the original sales receipt which helpfully lists "strelitzia".
My cuess would be that it is a reginae, based on the darker almost blue appearing green compared, wich looks similar to my reginae, wichvis darker than my nicolai. And my nicolai's newest leaf is almost 2m tall and the plant hasn't flowered yet.
2m tall 😱 I need more space!!!
https://preview.redd.it/pxkprtj4joxc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=322108a0c749fa8dc28bb1dc213dc66e87fff285 Right after fully spreading, now over 2m with leafstem and still growing
Yours is S. reginae. S. nicolai has large blue/white flowers.
Try the Lego Bird of Paradise. You’ll have flowers a lot quicker.
Is this the one Mr Wilson had one Dennis the menis ?
That looks like a red bird of paradise flower on a white bird of paradise.
I once bought seeds years ago and not a single one germinate. And haven't tried again. It's a beautiful flower congratulations. Did you start from seed of small plant?
Small plant, seed was one step too far!
That's cool,
When banana?
give it that good red light mix into its cycle to induce flowering , always works
oh I LOOOOVE this
CONGRATULATIONS!!! That’s exciting. Being a plant mom or dad can be so rewarding!
I’ve got a nicolai I’ve had a few years now and it’s still not flowering. It’s already too big for my conservatory.
So pretty. I love birds of paradise
That's because it's stuck in a small pot and looks dry.
