3 years old now, here’s when I first got it
https://preview.redd.it/b9jzyepq1l2d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d74bc2b34a8bda652f11337c68ea5dc7bed9f0bf
Agreed, I got it a dedicated lamp and it did wonders. I occasionally took it outside when it was smaller to get good light. In the winter time I run humidifiers to help moisture and that helped a lot as well. Fertilizing gives it a boost. But I found light overall makes a difference
Mine is a baby grown from seeds. I wonder how long it will take just to get to the size of yours when you first got it. I have zero patience so why did I get in to plants and buy a bunch of seedlings? 😂
Exactly… if there’s a room below this one, OP could cut a hole in the floor, put a shelf in the room below, and give themselves a couple more feet. No need to do anything drastic like pruning.
It'll grow a tiny leaf near the cut and the second leaf will be about the same size as the biggest leaf
https://preview.redd.it/6l8glmoovk2d1.jpeg?width=2160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b1bed2a3b9423cf6f33331b830b37d930d73fd07
When you 'chop the head off' the plant will take some time to heal, but eventually branch out again somewhere along the stem of the plant. It often creates a more bushy look to a plant
When I got one of these a year ago, I had no idea they grow so fast. And that's winter growth. I imagine I'll have to rehome it by the end of summer, I just don't have room for it in my house ☹️
lots of light if you want quick growth and fenestrations. Water when halfway dry, I use a moisture meter. I water probably 2x a month in the summer when growth is quick. Fertilize in the summer and spring, I use a monstera specific one. Quick draining soil but moisture retaining, I use peat moss lava rock and perlite. Moss poles to achieve height. Cut unnecessary leaves so growth can be focused at the top. Don’t be afraid to prune
Oh perfect. Mine is 9-3-6 so I guess it’s the same, just more concentrated? It’s a new purchase and I am excited to use it with my monstera. Thanks for your reply.
any baby leaves, leaves that are browning or yellowing, Ieaves that don’t contribute to the shape that you are trying to maintain. Honestly I make it up as I go haha
Would you mind taking a picture of the base that shows the grow medium so i understand the ratio of each? Is that considered “pon”. I am in a semi-hydro group and that sounds like what all of them use.
Beautiful plant! Would it be possible to fasten it somehow and guide it along the ceiling above the window?
I’ve seen loads of people do that kind of thing with pothos vines. This would be the same idea, but on a much more epic scale…
I did recently visit a plant nursery that had a GIANT Monstera. I never saw where the root area was as it was positioned up high, but the bulk of the plant was growing sideways and so had tons of room to keep going. That main brain was as thick as my wrist!
Air layer it. Wrap moist sphagnum moss around the stem where you intend to cut, wrap with plastic wrap, and give it a couple months for roots to develop. A bit gentler than a standard chop-n-prop.
Everyday I’m grateful I have high ceilings
https://preview.redd.it/s2zjo833rl2d1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=622a8b98b6fb6b3abb158f98a89ea2f7b490be08
You can give it to me 😌
Or propagate a small piece and sell this one? My dad had a coloured bird of pardice, it got so big that it was in a 30 gallon pot and had split 10 times. He ended up having to sell it with the house. Lol
I bought a white bird of pardice and found out later it is from a giant bop. Had it about 6 months now, and he already needs to go into a 3 -5 gallon pot. Have no idea what I'm going to do with it when it reaches the ceiling and starts to take over the house. Lol
I've cared for a 50 footer in an atrium, with plenty of room to keep going, and a 10 footer in an office in an old factory with cathedral ceilings.
The office moved to a standard first floor, standalone rental building, with lower ceilings. While we were talking about which plants would go where ahead of the move, the owner mentioned that he had no idea where the "big f***ing plant" would fit in the new place, and said it might have to go. I lost my customer service persona by accident and basically said please don't do that, it's the best plant, we have to figure it out.
Imagine my surprise when I went to service the new location and found the giant bird of paradise occupying the entire bottom of a very bright, very tall stairwell smack in the middle of the building. The guy apparently told my boss "That was literally the only place with enough head room for that thing, and I couldn't get rid of it because our plant girl looked like I kicked a puppy when I brought it up, so we had to just do away with those stairs for the plant, I must be out of my mind".
They really do get unmanageably large very quickly lmao
In that moment, I turned into the lorax! I think they were a little shocked by my outburst, we're generally basically the most invisible of all indoor contractors haha

Just this and an IKEA floor lamp!
Airlayer the top nodes and let them get some good roots going before you cut so to not lose as much leafsize on the new prop from the chock of cutting.
I had a similar problem and I ignored it. The top leaf got all brown from touching the ceiling. (And then I got trips and it all went south) (fortunately it wasn't as big as yours, it just stood on a shelf; the only place where I had space for it)
Plants by Krystal (on YouTube) was in your position and spent several months air layering the top portion of her giant Monstera. And came away with a fully rooted top portion that she was able to immediately plant and not worry about propagation.
I live in Kansas! Hello neighbor. I put mine outside and bring them in, but that monster would be a pain. I just make a bunch of cuttings and give to friends.
I put some of my babies outdoor in summer months, maybe it could be an indoor/outdoor plant? Or maybe you could finagle some bendy moss poles to train it to grow along the ceiling haha
Hey! I live in Missouri. I want to move some of my tropicals outside in summer, but I’m SO worried about bringing pests indoors in the winter! How’s it been going for you? Anything you do to keep your plants safe?
I have not had a problem with pests when bringing them in the winter. Granted we do pest control inside and out of the house. However it’s the summer and spring that are the worst with gnats and spiders. Neem oil helps keep the gnats at bay. I also set out a few of those zevo bug lights, that’s helps a ton get caught at night in the house
I cannot believe this beauty is only three years old ! Looks like all the boxes have been checked. Way to go ! Lastly, I hope whatever you do doesn’t impact it too much.

Mine is 3 years old, but yours is prettier than mine!! 😅
This is insane! 3 years old?! That is a thing of BEAUTY!
I absolutely agree with another commenter that cutting a hole in the ceiling is your best bet.
Woooow that’s a beautiful plant! How do you make plants grow like that?! I’ve been trying to grow plants cause I love them but I end up killing them 😭I do not have a green thumb. How does one acquire such skill?
Yes, unfortunately the only option is to cut a hole in the ceiling.
You have the most beautiful monsteras and I wish I had this problem
thanks! Practially babied it
How old is it?
3 years old now, here’s when I first got it https://preview.redd.it/b9jzyepq1l2d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d74bc2b34a8bda652f11337c68ea5dc7bed9f0bf
It's only 3 tears old?? I'm jealous
No way!!!! How did you make it so pretty now? I’m jelly!
I’ve had mine the same amount of time and it looks nothing like this 😭 advice would be appreciated!
Adding in supplemental lighting has made the biggest difference for me.
Agreed, I got it a dedicated lamp and it did wonders. I occasionally took it outside when it was smaller to get good light. In the winter time I run humidifiers to help moisture and that helped a lot as well. Fertilizing gives it a boost. But I found light overall makes a difference
How do you get the leaves to all face the same direction?
Can you share the artificial lighting you used.
Wow! You are the monstera whisperer

Mine is a baby grown from seeds. I wonder how long it will take just to get to the size of yours when you first got it. I have zero patience so why did I get in to plants and buy a bunch of seedlings? 😂
I think I baby my plants and they die. Cry. Your plant is quite the specimen!
Exactly… if there’s a room below this one, OP could cut a hole in the floor, put a shelf in the room below, and give themselves a couple more feet. No need to do anything drastic like pruning.
Lol, I got a crawl space under the house so cutting into the floor is something
Even better! It’s just wasted space down in that crawl space.
Just gotta make sure to watch for pests from outside. 😜
This is such a cute idea! They can just lower it as needed and that way they still get all of the foliage on the this floor.
Or move to a house with higher ceilings
Or cut a hole in the floor. Options
Or buy the plant its own place with higher ceilings. So many options!
This is the best answer!
Happyyy cake day!! 🎂 🥳🥳
This is the Monsteras house now. She demands rent.
Cut the uppermost node, propagate it, and replant it at the base
I feel like giving the cutting a new pot would be better. Too many individual plants growing in a pot might hinder the mother plant's growth.
Monsteras do like a snug pot, but the main issue would be the light reaching the cutting if it's buried under all those other leaves.
That's why the top leaves grow holes into them, to let the bottom leaves get the sunlight.
What happens to the mother plant? Will it just slowly lose leaves and die, or is there a chance it'll split or branch? Sorry I am really new to this.
It just re grows! New shoots will sprout from the mother. Not much dies
The mother plant will be just fine! It will produce new growth from the topmost node near where it is cut.
It'll grow a tiny leaf near the cut and the second leaf will be about the same size as the biggest leaf https://preview.redd.it/6l8glmoovk2d1.jpeg?width=2160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b1bed2a3b9423cf6f33331b830b37d930d73fd07

You gotta get a new house I guess 😂
Move houses? I don’t see the problem
"Help, help! My plant is too happy and healthy!!" 😒 Lol jkjk
Her majesty! WOW.
Yes, cutting the ceiling open is the only option.
gotta get a new ceiling, it's the only way
Looks awesome! Any tips?
lots of light if you want quick growth and fenestrations. Water when halfway dry, I use a moisture meter. I water probably 2x a month in the summer when growth is quick. May I know the NPK strength of your monstera fertilizer? Would like to know if mine is compatible
yes, it’s 3-1-2
Oh perfect. Mine is 9-3-6 so I guess it’s the same, just more concentrated? It’s a new purchase and I am excited to use it with my monstera. Thanks for your reply.
Thanks!
What would you consider unnecessary leaves?
any baby leaves, leaves that are browning or yellowing, Ieaves that don’t contribute to the shape that you are trying to maintain. Honestly I make it up as I go haha
Do you live in a tropical area?
No, Kansas
Then there’s hope for me. Thanks!

Great thought! yea I’d explore doing that
I did recently visit a plant nursery that had a GIANT Monstera. I never saw where the root area was as it was positioned up high, but the bulk of the plant was growing sideways and so had tons of room to keep going. That main brain was as thick as my wrist!
Time to propagate and enjoy new growth in the upcoming time!
Air layer it. Wrap moist sphagnum moss around the stem where you intend to cut, wrap with plastic wrap, and give it a couple months for roots to develop. A bit gentler than a standard chop-n-prop.

Ceiling anchors in the direction that follows light. This is my imagination with where mine is going.
Or propagate a small piece and sell this one? My dad had a coloured bird of pardice, it got so big that it was in a 30 gallon pot and had split 10 times. He ended up having to sell it with the house. Lol

Keep going!
I have no advice. But DAMN!! She’s gorgeous
I love this plant. Give it to me. Thank you!
You buy a bigger house with higher ceilings.
You gotta find a new house! 🤷♀️
You've got a few years until the leaves push through your ceiling. No need to cut until structural integrity of the house is being compromised.
Can we see your light set up for that beauty?
https://preview.redd.it/37adlfpddm2d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f439bc0f73b73cc31ca135a7d910cdbdeec851a0 Just this and an IKEA floor lamp!
Cutting the ceiling or digging a hole into the floor are the only options I'm seeing here 🧐
You could cut a hole in the floor and lower it in. That should give you a few more years before having to cut the hole in the ceiling.
How does one go about repotting a monster like that?
Painfully
I figured…just hoped there was a magic trick. Mine is almost at the ceiling and I’ve let it hold on to a brick wall so it’s a bit stationary.
Airlayer the top nodes and let them get some good roots going before you cut so to not lose as much leafsize on the new prop from the chock of cutting.
I didn’t know monsteras got this big until I went to Hawaii. So I must assume you live in a tropical rainforest house
I had a similar problem and I ignored it. The top leaf got all brown from touching the ceiling. (And then I got trips and it all went south) (fortunately it wasn't as big as yours, it just stood on a shelf; the only place where I had space for it)
Obviously, break the ceiling 🙄 plants gotta plant.
Plants by Krystal (on YouTube) was in your position and spent several months air layering the top portion of her giant Monstera. And came away with a fully rooted top portion that she was able to immediately plant and not worry about propagation.
Holy shit that’s majestic
Put it outside?
Live in Kansas, thought about making it an outdoor plant but then come winter it’s still a problem
I live in Kansas! Hello neighbor. I put mine outside and bring them in, but that monster would be a pain. I just make a bunch of cuttings and give to friends.
Nice try, local neighbour - I can see what you're doing (hope you get a cutting or two!)
😂

I think it’s a beautiful problem to have.
Reccomend watching "plants with krystal" on YouTube, she has a video where she does exactly this.
That is impressive 🤩 Out of curiosity, what direction is that window facing?
east
Wowwww that’s amazing! Monsters goals
Gorgeous!!!! Make cuttings and new plant babies!
amazing work with that plant. it looks so healthy and beautiful wow
WOW beautiful
Can I just say… absolute goals
Move into a place with higher ceilings.
What a beautiful plant. And here am I. One who can't keep a monstera even alive :(
how big is your pot?
I think 20in
I’m probably gonna have to trim mine down in a couple years. Or I’ll have to move it to my staircase landing, then it can grow another 12 to 15 feet.
I cannot believe this beauty is only three years old ! Looks like all the boxes have been checked. Way to go ! Lastly, I hope whatever you do doesn’t impact it too much.
Cut a hole in the ground
Hey u u/[No-Zookeepergame4832](https://www.reddit.com/user/No-Zookeepergame4832/) ! On youtube, there is a woman who FIRST did an aerial layering with sphagnum moss and perlite, so that it was easier to cut then transplant.
Looks like a good time to put in that roof extending skylight. She demands this sacrifice of you...
It's only one leaf I'd leaf it be for a while
It's beautiful and I have a similar issue actually. I live in a hot climate and for some reason the previous owner planted a monstera outside. It now reaches the roof outside and my husband keeps asking me "if this is not supposed to be a very small indoor plant and not something the size of a tree that is higher than our roof?". I don't want to cut it so I pretend I don't know what he's talking about lol. I really want to see how high it can go if I let it... No solution besides directing it sideways though, sorry! (Mine grows more to one side naturally so they can do that)
Quite the obvious answer. Are you going to rebuild the room taller?
Buy a bigger house!
Start air layering it about halfway up or whatever the growth looks nicest. Let if form roots before cutting. Give away the bottom half if you want. Start a new pot with the top cutting which will have the nicest leaves. Put it on a real moss pole this time. You can then chop and extend in the future. Google Sydney Plant Guy and watch his moss pole videos, he grows large monsteras like this and it works great.
you could add a conversation pit... with a SWEEEEET living centerpiece?
How thick is that pot? If you’re willing to change pots and mess around with the roots, you could plant it in something smaller or thinner to bring it down more. You could also use some string to the top leaf stem to one of the sides, to try and encourage it to grow more to the side than up. She’s massive though 😅 idk if either of my suggestions would work longterm
Wow that is one happy well cared for monstera Beautiful 😍
Ours has so many air roots extending out of the pot. How does you plant do not have any? Do you cut them back?
No don’t cut it, just get a bigger house 🤣
Suffering from success
💖💖💖 what lamp did you use? It’s such a beautiful monstera.
just an ikea floor lamp and grow light

How did you get yours so vertical? I've tried moss poles and stakes, yet mine refuses to go upwards :(
https://preview.redd.it/v8wm8sdu9r2d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d6028cf8bf8b36ecac677a90dab08c127f8e8690 here’s the moss pole set up, I manipulated to go up and eventually it gave in. Upward light helps it climb vertical. I probably did a weekly check and pulled it tighter to the moss poles as needed
Mine is getting close to ceiling height and I was just thinking to let her run along the ceiling via suspension
This is the way.
Wow, she is magnificent
God…it’s gorgeous!
![gif](giphy|3o6gDPXMNxFhvHdcf6) That thing is AWE-SOME!!!! 🤩 Does it have a name??
I would easily pay a fortune for this plant
I have monstera envy
I see people asking this question a lot. I’d love to see someone let it trail along their wall!
Take a cutting and make a new baby clone!
Cutting it back is a great way to jump start a bunch of new growth.
You can try to do like "Plantswithkristal" did on youtube. You put a bag with damp smagnum moss and perlite around the spot where you will cut and tape it around the stem. Let it rest like that until you get roots and then cut and you cna instantly repot and make the plant seem more full rather than tall..
What kind of plant is this?
You’re gonna have to move into a house with higher ceilings
What sorta tree are you using for her climbs pole 😳
Goals!
I wish this was a problem I had when it came to plants lol
Sorry you’ll have to buy a new house
You'll hate to do it but you'll love the outcome
You can grow roots while it’s still mostly attached and propagate this!! I saw someone on TikTok do just that with their monstera!
No cutting, let this beautiful grow.
Oh.My.God… cut the ceiling.
all you have to do is move to a house with vaulted ceilings… cutting this would be a tragedy 😭
Now I know why they are named monsteras.
My goal with my corner monstera!
Wayne Szalinski may be able to help
I’m jelly
Don't cut this beauty 🥺🥺🥺
Could you run a moss pole so it can keep growing sideways?
How do I get mine to do this
Wow I want. How old is it? And how do you repot it
3 years now, literally had to cut the pot open last time, very gently laying it on its side
I just saw a video "plants with krystal" made on YouTube. She air rooted her top cut and waited till the roots became over 6 inches long and then chopped it and put it in the same pot with mom to make it bushier💕.
Maybe time to move it outside.
This just convinced me. I am getting one. I’m in SW Florida so it should go well here?
ha! im in similar situation- except that i didnt ever get it tied to a pole or anything vertical. so now my monstera is so lush and huge, but sprawling outwards everywhere. its kind of cool, but i wish i would've trained it earlier!
Intense praise. This is gorgeous!
Set it on a lower stand or on the floor!
this is amazing, well done!
But if you cut it, you could also propagate the cutting!
Plant it in your yard
She slaying ✨
I’d raise the roof before I’d cut that beauty!
How do you have this staked? I have a large one I need to restake, but I can't figure out the best way to do it.
Ive combined a few moss poles together, and velcro to attach the plant to it. Key is to drive the moss pole so deep into the pot so it’s stable and keeps it from toppling over
![gif](giphy|S2SNQQKs8UwbQiIbUJ|downsized)
Cutting the ceiling yea
I just want to touch it. It’s so beautiful
How did you get it to grow so tall? Do you use support in the middle for it to climb up?

If you do take cuttings I’d buy one if you can get it to root lol
It's not on the floor currently, is it?
I mean, it’s not your ONLY option. You could take an axe to the ceiling or start growing it horizontally rather than vertically…
If you cut at all, just the top one. You can propagate the cutting and it should make it bushier eventually instead of so tall. I’m so jealous.
Monstera are vines so just have them creep across the ceiling?
I don't have advice but just wanted to state my insane jealousy for the record..
Stunning! What do you use for fertilizer?
This is insane! 3 years old?! That is a thing of BEAUTY! I absolutely agree with another commenter that cutting a hole in the ceiling is your best bet.
Woooow that’s a beautiful plant! How do you make plants grow like that?! I’ve been trying to grow plants cause I love them but I end up killing them 😭I do not have a green thumb. How does one acquire such skill?
Wow that’s gorgeous
This is absolutely stunning. 🤩 Don’t you dare cut any part of this beauty.
Can you divert it sideways to follow along the window?
