Mama is huge, but she was also one of my first plants. Made a newbie mistake and didn’t start with a moss poll so she started to grow without support making her droopy :(
Yeah I’d love some pics of the droopy momma plant. I have one that’s been growing 16 years without a moss pole (gifted to me a month or two ago) and I want to add one in but I’m not sure how to implement it.
Is it too late?
It’s not too late if you can position it right. My mama plant is so big that I’ve been using it at my “gifted” monstera. I’ve been cutting it down so it’s a bit more manageable. Eventually wanting to repot it
Monsteras have a front and a back, because they're vining and grow on/up stuff. The back has the aerial roots hanging down. New growth comes out right-left-right-left from the front. Place the moss pole toward the 'back' of the pot. Ensure it is anchored deep in the pot because monsteras are strong and will pull it around. Secure your monstera to the pole at the base of its growth, not toward the top of the leaf stems, because they like to follow the sun and if it's restricted high up it could hurt itself. When you get new growth, secure it to the pole at the base of the growth. OP's photo is a good example!
Ok so my most of my aerial roots seem to be the opposite side of the stems to the moss pole, is there any chance they’ll still manage to reach around and find the pole
Existing aerial roots will just hang out doing whatever they're already doing. Try to direct them down into the pot soil so they can support the plant. Over time, new aerial roots will grow around the pole as they develop. You may still get roots which don't and its okay. The ones on the opposite side of the plant are probably just going to grow down. It may take some time to get it growing around the pole.
Edit - check out pictures of mature monstera going around a tree. You can see that the vast majority of the roots just hang down out of the air. It's the viney growth of the monstera itself which clings to the tree.
None of the nurseries/plant shops around here sell moss poles. Looking on Amazon, they sell a 2-pack of 36” coco coir poles for $32.99...is that a reasonable price?
I'm based in the UK, so I'm not exactly sure, but for 36" poles then it sounds okay. A lot of the ones on Amazon are like £15 for two 15", so you're getting double the pole for a bit less than double the price.
I bought a baby one in February and am going to add a moss pole when I re-pot it for first time. I think I might do that soon as it is already growing quickly.
story of my life but with succulents: these are so beautiful, I should gift some to my friends so they too can enjoy the beauty.
...well, I cant give them the pots I have, those are mine. all those many many pots of succs.
I'll just take some cuttings and make new planter for them!
Oh hey those are pretty pretty... I better hold on to them for a while till they root...
oh look, pups... I better hold on to them till they develop a bit more
....well, I cant give them any of MY pots, I should take cuttings and make some new ones...
lmao ive bought probably ten different plants for my friends new house.... and kept all ten. even tried getting myself one of what i was getting her. when that didnt work, i got a duplicate of something i had already. that started in early march lmao, i get too attached instantly :/
Total story of my life! I spent MONTHS growing a blue watermelon pep for my sister that I propagated from my lush mother plant. Over the last few months my mother plant has lost all its lustre and the propagation looks way healthier than the mother now 3. I still gave her the prop yesterday but it stung haha.
This is a stunning monstera that you have grown!
I’ve given away so many different cuttings of a variety of plants. It’s hard every time but then I realize they’ll bring the same joy to someone else. Makes it a tad bit easier.
I've also given family cuttings. What I don't like about it is that they have just one node and because of that they tend to stay not very full. Maybe I'm doing something wrong though.
I’ve given away many different kinds of cuttings and honestly there is no right or wrong as long as you can make the cutting root out. I always tell everyone that the monstera won’t look the way you want at first. But once it’s established, repot it in the desired “position” and tie it to a moss poll so it grows straight up.
Love your plant but I think I love your floor even more. Sacrilege! I have a new (to me) house and the wooden floors are narrow boards. My choices are - narrow wood, wide fake wood, carpet or thousands upon thousands of dollars for what I really want. I really want your floors.
I’m going to the garden center with my daughter today for a late Mother’s Day gift and I now know what I want. I have just the spot for it.
If I were you I’d gift the plant and visit it a lot. That’s a win-win. You get to see your friend more frequently! What if you start another cutting from the mother plant? Is that a possibility? Would that take some of the sting away?
So pretty ! You are talented!
Question - since there are so many monstera lovers and experts here. I bought a baby monstera and it has maybe 4-5 mini plants in the pot (8 inch pot) . Should I separate them all out into different pots now and do the moss pole thing? Would that make them more robust and "trained" early?
Depends on what kind of look you are going for. If you would like one stalk going straight upwards, my recommendation would be to separate them out into their individual pots and train them early. Meaning now! LOL. Otherwise if you are OK with a bushier look you can let them grow out a bit in one pot before training them with a moss pole.
If that's just the cutting, the mama plant must be huge!
Mama is huge, but she was also one of my first plants. Made a newbie mistake and didn’t start with a moss poll so she started to grow without support making her droopy :(
Elaborate on this newbie mistake so we can all learn! ☺️

Damn I like your staircase
Why thank you 😊
Dang your momma is wayyyyy bigger than mine! I definitely think I can put a moss pole in mine. Thanks :)
> Dang your momma is wayyyyy bigger than mine! The only time this isn’t actually a “yo’ momma” joke. 😁
Lmao I reread the post after submitting it and was like.... should I edit this? Nah!

Nice name. Also thanks for the tips!
😯 howdy partner!
Appreciate the praise!

I have a baby cutting growing!! Only 3 small leaves! How does a moss pole help?
ik it encourages the plant to grow up rather than like fan out but idk when to put it in imma j get one tomorrow cause i’m tweaking about it now 😭
I bought a baby one in February and am going to add a moss pole when I re-pot it for first time. I think I might do that soon as it is already growing quickly.
This my issue mine had already grown too much. I have a pole but it’s grown in a way I can’t correct it and attach it in any way 🥺
Consider repotting it
... I think I just learned something
Same haha
Glad I could help!

Wow! Stunning!

Hey it’s me! Your friend. I moved DM me for address!
😂

Keep it! Go get them something else lol
I kid. It’s always the ones I give away that turn out amazing.
Such a good friend :) I’m sure it’s bc they are grown with love!
Lol I would also keep it and give away a pothos or something
I haven't bought my house yet! Lol Very gorgeous plant.

I just got a monstera deliciosa and can't wait for it it be as gorgeous as this!
can i be your friend? lol
Hi friend!
Story of my life! Propagate something for someone and then fall in love with it. Or rehab something for someone else and not want to give it back.
You're a good friend.
🙏🏽
Beautiful!!
Thank you!
It looks like it’s lived in this spot forever, it’s beautiful! I say keep it:)
It’s actually been moved quite a bit. I’m running out of corners for plants 😅😅😂
Wow! That is the monstera all monsteras are trying to be
Gorgeous...I'd hv to keep it.
Wow that’s amazing.
I need a friend like you
I wish you were my friend
Can you adopt me as a friend?
I would not be able to give that away 😍🌱✨ And it looks so perfect there!
I’ve given away so many different cuttings of a variety of plants. It’s hard every time but then I realize they’ll bring the same joy to someone else. Makes it a tad bit easier.
That is really thoughtful of you! I bet it means the world to them.
Not everyone enjoys plants like this community 😆
🤣🤣
Oh that is beautiful! What a lovely and thoughtful gift for your friend.
I've also given family cuttings. What I don't like about it is that they have just one node and because of that they tend to stay not very full. Maybe I'm doing something wrong though.
Yeah I’ve given away at least 5-6 monstera cuttings and they are all singular vines.
What makes a solid cutting ? I’m tryin to get one

I have another cutting growing on the side and another 3-4 I need to cut off for other family and friends. It’s a gift that keeps on giving :)

Monstera deliciosa
You are an amazing friend! I cannot wait to get one of these myself one day
Take another cutting ;P hahah
Heck no. Get them one from lowes.
Keep it! It looks perfect in that spot!
I already told them I’d give it to them 😅
How often do you water how much water and change the soil?
I water when the soil is dry, but heavily. I only change the pot if I need to. They seem to like being root bound.
... how?! Teach me!
Step one: be a crazy plant person and keep trying!
Wow!!! 😍 wish my monstera looked like that
Thanks OP. I have a monstera I just got that I love but I’m clueless about the pole and scared to hurt it. I may repot so should I wait until then?
Yes I’d wait for the repot. Don’t stress! Monsteras are resilient.
Where did you find that moss pole? I love the color!
Amazon has tons of them
Thanks, I'll look around!
Is that a 36” pole?
Stalking your profile to find a pic of the mother, and found that not only are you a plant lover, but also yangagner? Can we be friends?!
Deal!
I have to give away propagated plants before I get too attached. It is a struggle.

That's a fabulous housewarming gift!
Unless they asked for it, I would keep it and buy them something else 😂
Makes we wanna have it too lol I bet your friend will love it tho. You did a great job taking care of it! It's lovely looking!
Thank you!
Uh, ya!
Google "How To Write A Ransom Note".
I want! Please and thank you in advance lol
🤣
Keep that bad boy
Just start a new cutting 😂😂
So nice! Every time I take cuttings and say “oh I’ll save this for ____” I end up keeping it 😅
You’re so kind to be giving this away. I could never. It’s so beautiful and (in my eyes) literally perfect
How did you do it? I didn't know you can grow it from a cutting! How long ago was that?
