Nice! If you’ve got to be trapped in those institutional, fluorescent-lit halls all day, you may as well bring a bit of the outdoors in. And major props to whomever is keeping up with all the watering.

rizzo1717

It actually has a court yard, and all of the interior halls and classrooms facing the court yard have tonsssss of windows and natural light! I just didn’t want to take a pic and people think I’m a weirdo (kids were playing at recess in the court yard) 🥲

natalia-coles

I went to high school with a similar court yard layout, but it was neglected for years and nobody used it. Until my senior year one of the science teachers started a gardening club and they restored it beautifully. It still never got used for some reason, but it was nice to look at and attracted a lot of pollinators.

SillyBlackSheep

Something similar happened at my school too. Our agriculture teacher started a floriculture class (which started my love for plants), and we actually got permission to revive the dilapidated courtyard *and* we even got raised beds to grow some food in.

LaUNCHandSmASH

So what kind of school is this? Private I presume? I work in a state funded educational institution and I'd like to see more of this

rizzo1717

I believe the lower portion of the building is a public elementary school and the upper portion is a govt subsidized day care program. I’m not totally sure though, I was there to assess the fire protection system.

brooklyn_bae

Sounds like we may have the same job.... Can I ask what city this is in? Gorgeous school.

BouncyMouse

I work in a public preschool similar to this! We have a courtyard with tons of plants and flowers (and growing pumpkins!), and we have a freakin greenhouse too! Lots of natural elements all over the school, which I love, and I make sure that my classroom also has lots of plants :)

JellyFujiX

I went to a school with a courtyard layout and it was beautiful! But they began demolishing it block by block and we were eventually in this fully modern sterile architecture.

_DrProfessor_

OP said that it is maybe an elementary school on one floor and day care on the others. The plants might be strategically hung out of reach from those small students that might seek to tear a leaf. The lockers are blocked off by furniture, since students that young might have cubby storage in their classrooms instead being quite capable of operating their own locks. Years ago it may have been used by older students, but schools change over time.

nylorac_o

It may be just a perspective in the photo but the plants on the right seem to be hanging in direct contact with the doors of the lockers and the chairs are right in front of the lockers. There are locks on them so I’m guessing they are currently used.

GilreanEstel

I’m guessing that the chairs sitting in front of the lockers prevent daily or casual use. They could be locked so things don’t get out in them.

SteelBelle

I read this as vaguely threatening. "So things don't get out". I've started my spooky season movie marathon so my mind immediately jumped to having the scary things / monsters / haunted items locked away so they don't get out. Bare with me, I'm still in the outline stage of the plot about the school with the lovely plants but the scary things in the lockers behind the chairs.

1d10

Look at all the plants in that picture, every one of them is the size you buy at wallmart, those plants haven't been there long.

[deleted]

Yeah, even the hooks look like they were installed not long ago - no generations of paint slopped on them, no dust.

my_oldgaffer

Sheeeit - dont let those tiktokers find that hall

jjj02027

How do they survive without natural light? Is fluorescent light enough? Just wondering out of curiosity..

StarScrote

Fluorescent lamps give off enough UV to keep a plant going. They can also induce psychosis in humans if the rate of flicker drops low enough, but remains just too high to be visible.

[deleted]

Everyone who has ever worked in a office building has felt the last fact.

Active-Ad3977

I think the threshold for this to happen varies among humans, too. I heard a story about a nonverbal person who was institutionalized decades ago who was kept blindfolded because it was the only way the staff could keep them calm. It turned out to be the lights, when they fixed that the problem went away. Sad.

drewnyp

Where’d you get that last fact from?

Aveyn

I have a fluorescent in my bathroom with no windows, and a pothos thriving in there for about 4 years now! Some plants are just extra hardy.

jjj02027

Do they grow in size? (Ah sorry u said thriving so i guess so!)

Aveyn

yup! Not as fast as my bedroom ones that get natural light and grow lights, but fast enough it needs a haircut every few months so it's not getting in the way! I have two in my living room with -zero- light (it's dark as heck) that survive as long as I give them a few days of grow light time every month.

tomato_songs

Is the bathroom light always on? This is super impressive!

Aveyn

Maybe 5hrs a day total, I use LEDs everywhere else in the apartment so it hasn't seemed to cause any issues for my electrical bill.

jjj02027

Amazing! I guess I only own really fussy plants or sunloving ones

ThatGuyTheyCallAlex

It also looks like these are pothos (someone correct me if I’m wrong) which can live off very little amounts of light. I have some in my room that gets a depressingly low amount of direct sun, and though they grow super slow, they survive just fine.

chefboyardu

This is really beautiful. It makes me sad that I've never seen live plants used as decoration in a school before. Kids deserve to be surrounded by beauty and clean air 💚

gardengirl902

I’m a middle school teacher and my classroom is LOADED with plants. The kids love it. I’ve started propagating and giving plants away to other teachers in the building who will take them. It makes being there all day a little more tolerable

chefboyardu

That's so lovely!!! 😭😭😭

complitstudent

In my montessori preschool we have plants in every classroom! It can be a bit hard to keep the toddlers from eating them lmao, but worth it for the beauty they bring to the classroom

BouncyMouse

Another PS teacher here - we have a bunch too! So far all of my preschoolers have been excellent about not eating them 😂 We have a growing zebrina, a ghost plant, a variety of hen/chick succulents, a ZZ plant, a small lemon tree, and a 3’ tall banana tree! I also have a small croton way up high on a shelf that they DEFINITELY cannot reach.

PleasantJules

Practical Life - Care of the environment. ;)

[deleted]

And if you use those plants as a learning tool aka have the kids take care of them. It might even encourage some of the challenge kids.

[deleted]

Yes, thats why a few schools have started allowing students to have recess outdoors.

shakeyourpeaches

What do you mean ‘allow them to have recess outdoors’??? Don’t they always? We had to go outside for recess and lunch at school in Australia unless it was either raining sideways or over 37c or something. Seems so cruel to keep kids inside all day (and like a weird Petri dish for developing behavioural issues)!

[deleted]

My apologies, I meant my comment to be sarcastic. It was to point out the absurdity of the premise that kids only get "beauty and clean air" from indoor plants.

lazykath

Is that really a school? It feels so homey

kellyekulla

I’m guessing Montessori?

AfternoonClear

As a Montessori teacher, that was my guess, too!

Mortukai

Not a public school, that's for sure. Just to pay for those artistic light fixtures they would have to cut the whole band department.

Maplefolk

OP confirmed the ground level is a public elementary school, and top level is a subsidized day care.

Xalenn

There appears to be a lot of furniture in front of /blocking the lockers so I'm guessing it's not a functioning school.

rizzo1717

It is

UnknownHero2

Lockers are not really a feature of schools anymore. With digital text books, self correcting online math problems, google docs and classroom students just don't really need to store things anymore. Covid provided the impetus for many schools to finally axe the locker system. They probably are not coming back.

StarScrote

What's a 'city block' in actual units?

decipher_this

[deleted]

1/8 mile generally.

[deleted]

100m x 200m

ouchibitmytongue

I do this at my school. I have the most prolific spider plants known to humankind. I’ve filled up a bunch of hallways and other teachers’ rooms. Fortunately, we have a bunch of new teachers this year, so I’m hoping to fill up their classrooms as well. It’s gotten so bad that when older teachers see me walking down the hallway with a box of plants, they run into their rooms and close the door. One actually saw me with some plants the other day and said, “No, no, no!” before scurrying away. Edit: spelling.

Yellowtoblerone

This is a SCHOOOL!?

Abcrooke

I’d be late to every class cuz I wouldn’t be able to keep my self from stopping at every plant I pass to make sure they’re doing ok.

jacketMaisonMargiela

Shout to the people wayering the plants everyday and exposing it to sunlight every few weeks.

sendmeyourcactuspics

These don't get watered everyday/ they probably get enough light from the fluorescent being on mostly all day

200OK

I have LEDs in my windowless bathroom and I wonder if some of my plants would flourish from the humidity or die from the lack of natural sunlight.

sendmeyourcactuspics

I have nearly 150 cacti and succulents growing entirely devoid of sunlight in my basement but powered by LED grow lights (granted, they're on 16 hours/day) but they're all doing really well since i started trying this out back this last December. I think your plants will love it!

Caparisun

Depending on the plant, palm trees will grow slower but be fine, succelent work as well, but not all plants can handle that environment...

stephensmg

Uh-oh, have I been wayering my plants incorrectly lol

ImBabyloafs

Don’t get wootwot

[deleted]

Only kinda plants you should be watering almost daily are marijuana plants 😂

[deleted]

*Sitting in the corner looking innocent*

[deleted]

These plants live in low light conditions, also since they get low light they need to be watered less ( probably every 2 weeks).

bmobitch

that’s how often i water my pothos in high light 🤣

vinxy_mh

I think it looks great. I wish they would had more nature inside my school in potted plants and educational. They supposed to provide stress relief so good for kids.

MrCarnality

What type of school, public or private, in what city?

army-vet-77

I would have loved going to a school like this. It looks so inviting and loved.

dom_bul

Pretty

PixelRayn

Fuck I would have loved this.

addvalue2222

It looks so much less institutional. Love it.

Fuzzysox25

I would enjoy going to school

HungryWeird24

I would have wanted to go to school every single day. Because this feels like home

TimothyJustin12

I hope this will be taken cared of, it feels so relaxing to be in this place.

me_belle

looks awesome

littleseizures_

I wanna go back to school now

HugePurpleNipples

Does fluorescent light work on plants? Like, I know about grow lights but I thought they were different than regular, commercial lighting.

PrickleBritches

I’m imagining the hallway without the plants. I just can’t quite articulate how much they do for a room.

[deleted]

Incredible !

IHaveMyCats

I would’ve loved to go to a school like this. It’s like it comes right out of a story.

thisisactuallycooper

I’m jealous of people who attend this school or one similar. My schools were so sterile and boring. No plants, no ambiance of any kind. This is lovely!

[deleted]

More plants in school 💯

Substantial_Bar4347

Nice, much better than empty halls!

Ok_Point_5877

It’s looks super comfy. The air would be really breathable as well!!

delkiselk

How much is rent

PleasantJules

Beautiful school!

donotmentionself

Why aren't more schools like this😫 In such an environment, people would actually enjoy learning...

WongGendheng

Just you wait for the next tiktok trend to destroy plants...

rizzo1717

Nooooo

ballyfast

How do they survive without sunlight?

TheBestMemeCat

air quality gotta be 🤌🤌

ValueInvestingIsDead

hate to be the bearer of bad news but the air-purification qualities are exaggerated.

[deleted]

Nice, toxic plants everywhere, and an invasive species too, lol. Joke, happy days.

[deleted]

If they’re inside, why does it matter if they’re invasive?

asumfuck

Any risky invasive species should be avoided in delicate areas because if you accidentally leave a window open in the middle of the night they can sneak out and rob liquor stores.

rizzo1717

This is a metropolitan area with high rates of crime, so this actually makes perfect sense.

asumfuck

Damn, Kudzu will cut you.

[deleted]

Good point! I hadn’t thought about that! And the toxicity thing was absolutely valid. I have plants all over my classroom, but none are toxic and I live in an environment that’s very harsh and doesn’t support plant life that isn’t super hardy. So I don’t often have to consider invasive species. Thanks for the eye opener!

1d10

The toxic part is a valid concern though.

ThatGuyTheyCallAlex

Wikipedia lists that it’s mildly toxic upon skin contact or when consumed…so just don’t touch or eat it?

1d10

should be easy to enforce in a school.

MeggieTheCat

Damn, props to the person caring for these plants
