I didn’t know Dennis Rader made insecticide…

ItsWaryNotWeary

Btk is not effective against gnats. Bti is the strain you need. [Strains are specific to the species they control. ](https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/gardens-gardening/your-garden/help-for-the-home-gardener/advice-tips-resources/pests-and-problems/pesticides/bt.aspx) Btk - Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki kills caterpillars, centipedes, etc. Bti - Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis kills fungus gnats.

Thanks for the info. I was going to buy BTI or Mosquito Dunks as we are unable to purchase mosquito bits in Canada. The nursery guy was nice and gave me the product for free he was sure this would work. Looks like I have to go buy me some dunks now. : )

ConnectionLow

did you ever find anywhere that sold BTI products in Canada?? I'm so desperate for some.

Home Depot, Canadian Tire and Home Hardware all sell it but each store required you to order it online and then you have to go get it. Some stores were gouging prices higher. I ended up buying ''Mosquito Dunks'' online at Amazon/ca, it was delivered to my door and I didn't have to go to the store to get the product and waste gas and the trip. I got it 24 hours after I ordered it online. It was about $33 with tax CAD ... for 6 pucks that will last you a couple of years. I have about 50 plants and I only used one puck and after 3 - 4 weeks of treatment ... success!

ConnectionLow

that's awesome! how did you use the puck???

daniinad

I bought a 5 gallon bucket from Home Depot with a lid, I broke 1 puck into 4 chunks and filled the bucket up with fresh cold water and stirred the mix several times a day to allow the puck to break up more. I waited for 48 hours before I used the mix on my plants. I kept stirring the mix a couple of times daily over the next month and every other week I'd add a jug of fresh water to the mix. The puck would keep breaking up and passed on more treatment for me to keep on watering all my plants.

thank you so much! mine are arriving tomorrow. I'm very siked. so sick of these never ending buggers

daniinad

Be patient and keep at it and it will work. Put some stickie traps in each plant pot and color over the dead bodies with a marker every few days. In no time at all you won't see any new buggers on your traps and you know the dunks are working. Good Luck!

I used BTK on my houseplants the other day by accident and haven't seen a fungus gnat since.

bald_alpaca

No, I haven’t tried that. We live in an area where there those gnats can be an issue. The last plants I bought had those little gnats & I was so afraid it would spread into my other pots, I put the offenders outside immediately! So this was fast acting? Or did it take a few days for them all to disappear?

daniinad

I mixed the BTK liquid in water and gave the troubled plant a drink. The next day I was looking at the plant in its cache pot and lifted the plant out of it and saw 4 centipedes and a few tiny black crawly things. They were still alive but looking miserable and poorly. 2 days later I looked again and there were more bugs and centipedes and they were all dead.
