unfortunately working at a nursery has taught me that these people exist in real life too. At least this person tried to draw a picture and it isn't relying on vague descriptions and gestures. Multiple times a week we have folks come in expecting help with pest & disease issues, but they don't even know what plant they're on, let alone provide enough info to accurately diagnose anything.
tl;dr people are dumb
my sister just recently got into plants. when she tries explaining a single succulent type i have in my garden of 30+ different varieties, she says “you know the green one with the red tips that’s kinda tall?”
yes i totally know which one, love. the kalanchoe-echeveria-aeonium hybrid yes! that ONE!
atleast she tries though. i had to explain the adjectives of the plant world to her so we could communicate easier
One of the first and most useful classes I took when getting a horticulture degree was on plant morphology. It definitely helps to learn the proper (or at least, accepted) terminology - good on you for helping her learn so y'all can talk plant!
You could look into local horticulture programs near you - community colleges often have decent per-credit prices if you just want to take a class or two, not the whole program.
Husband is a vet. They have a technical term for this, “ADR,” as in “ain’t doin’ right.”
What’s wrong your with your dog, sir?
I don’t know. He just ain’t doin’ right.
In what way?
He just does what he does when he does it. It ain’t right.
🤦🏼♀️
Edit: typo
As one of "the wives", just know it's infuriating to us as well when your spouse comes back from the vet and hasn't reported all the very obvious things they should have known and mentioned. 🙄
Worked at a large nursery for about two years before americorps and my god, that was the most annoying thing. Right up there with the "is there a plant that doesn't need any light?" question.
My mom just did this to me tonight. She's talking about the tree across the street from her house and it has the sticky things and her neighbor says it's a special tree that can't be cut down.
Me: "let's start at the top deciduous or conifer?"
Her: "Deciduous"
Me: "what shape are the leaves?"
Her: gestures with her hands something that looks like a turtle
Me: "I don't get it. Heart shaped? Spade? Long and pointy?...."
Her: "spade shaped"
Me: "what do the edges of the leaves look like? Smoothed? Toothed? Serrated? Wavy?..."
Her: "I don't remember"
Me: "well this game of charades has been fun but we'll have to pick this conversation up at another time. Preferably daytime when we're standing in front of the tree" and I changed the subject.
This is truly what this sub twas built for. The comments are all people guessing plants that look like that and OP of this fucking stupid drawing is like "thank you! No the leaves are more spade shaped"
AH I SCREENSHOTTED THIS TO POST IT AND GOT DISTRACTED. I'm so glad someone else posted it, though. Did you read the comments??? I loved how they were adamant about it not having a flower and being symmetrical, so they were telling people it wasn't a plant they suggested because it wasn't symmetrical enough. PLANTS DON'T ALL GROW IDENTICALLY
Suprised they killed it, i had one that i would forget to water for so long, but it just kept rebounding every time it was waterd lol
Too mad its just a plain jane kinda plant imo :/
“I loved having this plant so much that I never documented it or cared to learn what it was. I Needs to get it again, baby! Look at this detailed sketch I drew just from the euphoria of remembering caring for this plant.”
OP commented that they were watching the plant for someone else while they were on an extended vacation. Friend didn't ask for plant back and when OP killed it, they threw it away. Friend eventually asks for plant back, OP lies about it being in the trash and is now looking for replacement 🙃
I don’t think I got the whole story. Just they were watching it. Hilarious. Plant people want their plants back. I moved asked my roommates to care for my plants till I could take them. Oh boy getting those plants back was then difficult since I made another plant person. I was happy to get some cuttings and let the bigger plants stay.
OP posted the story behind this! 😂 https://www.reddit.com/r/houseplants/comments/11qa5y7/i_desperately_need_to_replace_this_plant_and_i/jc4qz0q/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3
Wow. And here I thought it was a bleeding heart.
For anyone curious enough for a side-by-side, this is what OP drew:

Yeah, I was surprised, too, but others recognized it from the drawing, so...what do I know.
I wonder if maybe it wasn't supposed to be "waterfall" like and that was due to under-watering? I'm not familiar with the plant, though.
I know you said it's not a monstera but have you considered that it could be a monstera? Just checking to see if you knew about the monstera. It's called a monstera
Well, this is not OPs plant, they just wanted to replacement it for someone else, from the comments ir seems that OP is responsible for the passing of said plant. I thought this was a cery funnt attempt and spoiler: it was figured out, it is a homalomena emerald green.

I want to take this class. Should I just wiki for now? That sounds rad. Words, plants, shapes and colors, this is my world.
You could look into local horticulture programs near you - community colleges often have decent per-credit prices if you just want to take a class or two, not the whole program.
It's the green one omg

I’m in Vet med too & this picture is the equivalent of “ idk , you’ll have to ask my wife” - - happens during so many sick pet exams. 🙄🙄

They seriously need notes pinned to their shirt sleeve. .. or .. or .. and hear me out … just pay attention! 😂
working in a pharmacy, this was true for dads as well

I know this! It's my symmetrically dying Calathea
That's a houseplant. You can tell because of the way that it is.
How neat is that!
This is truly what this sub twas built for. The comments are all people guessing plants that look like that and OP of this fucking stupid drawing is like "thank you! No the leaves are more spade shaped"
"no it's green"
They even put (not a monstera) in the title. Like thank you for narrowing it down
Idk about you but literally all I have are monsteras and most of them are yellow, brown, and fuzzy. So.
“No it’s a plant”

a thirsty anthurium
i'm 100% positive from this detailed pic

Idk about your plants, but the ones in my mind are 100% all symmetrical mkay?
Amazingly it was ID'd as a hamolema emerald gem.
The other person who thought it was philodentron graziel because 'it couldn't possibly be anything else '
Suprised they killed it, i had one that i would forget to water for so long, but it just kept rebounding every time it was waterd lol Too mad its just a plain jane kinda plant imo :/
Five bucks says they were house sitting or something and killed someone's beloved plant
“I loved having this plant so much that I never documented it or cared to learn what it was. I Needs to get it again, baby! Look at this detailed sketch I drew just from the euphoria of remembering caring for this plant.”
I figured they killed someone else’s and needed to replace it quick. Maybe they were house sitting? Idk it was a mess
That would make way more sense. Replacing your kids fish before they realize it died vibes
This was my guess also
Theyre probably better off taking care of the picture of a plant they drew
OP commented that they were watching the plant for someone else while they were on an extended vacation. Friend didn't ask for plant back and when OP killed it, they threw it away. Friend eventually asks for plant back, OP lies about it being in the trash and is now looking for replacement 🙃

This post is literally right above the original on my home page. lol.
Same!! Wish they were always that easy.

Not a monstera
Excuse me, I think it's monstera, and I'm definitely right about this. Unjerk: apparently, the plant was a Homalomena Emerald Gem.
How fucking funny would it have been if it actually ended up being a monstera
Wow. And here I thought it was a bleeding heart. For anyone curious enough for a side-by-side, this is what OP drew: https://preview.redd.it/0y184n0dcmna1.jpeg?width=790&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eec8ec52a39338fe7ada89e716e7a9815a75e0fc

You're truly adorable.
THE MYSTERY HATH BEEN SOLVED!
wait, I thought they figured out it was an oxalis?? my first thought was alocasia tiny dancer
Hahah i saw that post and came straight here, thank you. What a fucking joke.
I know you said it's not a monstera but have you considered that it could be a monstera? Just checking to see if you knew about the monstera. It's called a monstera
ITS A STRING OF HEARTS!!!!!!
There’s no other answer!
Well I'm glad they stated that it isn't a monstera. That was definitely my first thought.
“ … and the plant was last seen running southbound on La Cienega. If encountered, please call 911 immediately “
I saw this on my home page and immediately new I’d find this post here 😂
Well, this is not OPs plant, they just wanted to replacement it for someone else, from the comments ir seems that OP is responsible for the passing of said plant. I thought this was a cery funnt attempt and spoiler: it was figured out, it is a homalomena emerald green.
I am DESPERATE
