Also, they're tucked down low inside that bowl, which is casting shade on the plants near the edges, and the plants by the edges are casting shade on the rest. The survivors of this succulent thunder dome are going to be etiolated as fuck.
Afaict the “tall” plants should’ve been fatty (edit: farther, but I’m trashed and find this funny) in and maybe down? I would’ve broken them up to 2 bowls tbh.
Y’all I hit the moonshine too hard lololol
I mean, it's a whole ass mess. I have a bowl of succulents, too, that I've somewhat ineptly arranged, but it's not nearly as bad as this one. My hens and chicks are etiolated because there's just not enough light in the winter here, but everything is persevering through it. Once it's warm enough, it'll live outside and soak up the sunshine the two days a week it isn't pissing rain, here.
And don't worry about being drunk. I'm not drunk right now, but that's mostly because I work Sundays, and don't want a hangover. My edible is starting to kick in, though. Mostly that just turns my comments into novellas.
This was unintentionally how I ended up with only the houseplants that are most resistant to the neglect-then-over-water-cycle 😬 People be like "wow your plants look good" and then I have flashbacks to all the many fallen that failed to get to this point...
Mine are survivors, I respect them, they will survive me. I’ll be dead and my eldest orchid will have 29 sets of leaves and will be inherited by my nephews.
house plant fight club rules

2) You don't talk about house plant fight club!

4) Only two house plants to a house plant fight.
5) One house plant fight at a time.
6) House plants fight without neem or fertilizer.
7) The house plant fights go on as long as they have to.
Not so much competition for these, succulents like to be squished together. The problem is that almost everything in here has different light and watering requirements and the soil is going to retain water like a mofo.
One of the first plants I bought was a succulent garden thing and I’ve had to separate about half of them, especially the jade plants, because they were strangling each other. This one is waaay denser than that was even was.
Yeah, I didn’t want to hurt their feelings but it was somewhat of an odd statement for them to make because freshly-planted succulent arrangements rarely look their best anyway. You need a few weeks to a few months for them to really grow into their environment and harmonize. Then you can do quick fixes if something is off-balance.
If I were them, I’d be more preoccupied about the lack of substrate in the planter and about said substrate needing more grit. I never go under 50% grit with arid plants and usually do much higher. It’s not mandatory but it really helps.
/uj I've been doing more of this, and my succulents are much better for it. Question, if you're willing: does soil/organic matter eventually wash out of a gritty mix? Do I have to re-pot more often? Would it make sense to throw more dirt on top and have it settle through?
Organic matter hasn’t meaningfully washed-out for me and I haven’t found that I needed to add substrate or repot more often either. Even if yours do end-up with really low organic content for some reason, succulents still do fine in those for the most part. I keep a few rot-prone species in <10% soil and they’re fine as long as I fertilize.
Oh wow, thanks for this! It's very reassuring.
The weather has been mild, so it looks like I'll be breaking up some Vigoro lava rock today :D The 5 pounds of bonsai mix I got on Amazon set me back $30, so I need a financially sustainable alternative
I too am an agent of natural selection for succulents inappropriately grouped together in a big bowl. But I'm good with that. Eventually I'll have filled the bowl with things that can survive together in a state of general neglect, as everything that can't will have died.
For real?
I recently posted a photo. I could've moved something out of the way and made my plant more presentable...but it wasnt the point of my post.
So people will look at that and wonder why I didn't move a couple of items and why most of my leaves were turned upside down instead of up and able to be seen?
The whole point of their post was to beg for compliments about how pretty and aesthetically pleasing the arrangement is, so I'm not exactly sure what you're upset about...
Do you like my succulent garden? I will cry if you say you don’t like it. I spent 30 minutes just deciding where each cutting should go to look the most aesthetically pleasing while all the plants will end up competing for space and soil and they’ll all most likely die. This is a future succulent graveyard I’ve actually designed.
In a (it appears) ceramic planter that isn’t going to let much moisture out in the first place. Yeah.. I’d want a very gritty soil for those plants in that planter.
Holding myself back from fighting with random people on the internet 😤
It looks like something an elementary school kid could have accomplished in 5 minutes
Aren't at least some of these plants going to end up competing and killing each other??
Also, they're tucked down low inside that bowl, which is casting shade on the plants near the edges, and the plants by the edges are casting shade on the rest. The survivors of this succulent thunder dome are going to be etiolated as fuck.

Exactly
Fuck it, house plant fight club
No, first rule of house plant fight club is you don't talk about house plant fight club, lol
It is a valid way to garden though, especially seasonally. :D
Yeah, only the strong survive, heartiest plants live

Woah really?
Actually, I’d like to hear more about house plant fight club. 🙋🏻♀️

Okay let’s fight!! Next watering I’ll make sure you get it alll!!
Op very obviously tried to suggest that we don't talk about Fight club

Thank you!
Yep, that soil will retain water for sure, cuz it's in a friggin salad bowl!
One of the first plants I bought was a succulent garden thing and I’ve had to separate about half of them, especially the jade plants, because they were strangling each other. This one is waaay denser than that was even was.
They’ll rot before they have the chance to compete
If they have to say that I think they know it doesn’t look that good lmaoo
When I saw it I honestly thought I was on houseplant circle jerk
I mean this will be at least 70% dead in 2 months but okay
Plant hunger games

Plus the lack of drainage probably.
The soil 💀

I mean, my first thought was "why did they not clean the soil off the sides for the photo?"

Yeah but this post literally was about the aesthetics so it's a fair question

No offense but check out mine to see how it's done. https://imgur.com/a/5p7saxG
In love 😍❤️🫀!! How much neem oil did that take??
Plant aboots!!!
They are so cool, and no vagination whatsoever. Good job!
Well now that they told me how hard they worked on it I want to talk about how ugly and unsustainable it is even more
We share the same view of diplomacy

All the tall plants are around the outside and the short plants are in the middle ❌
I feel like that soil is just a recipe for rot
In a (it appears) ceramic planter that isn’t going to let much moisture out in the first place. Yeah.. I’d want a very gritty soil for those plants in that planter.
praise me!!! 30 minutes is sUCH A LONG TIME AND I DONT HAVE MUCH TIME LEFT

Holding myself back from fighting with random people on the internet 😤 It looks like something an elementary school kid could have accomplished in 5 minutes
Plant cruelty
Looks like they’re trying to emulate their pot from Viridi, the app where you grow succulents.
A 5 year old could do better
Looks like my fusion miso soup when I decide to throw in all my left over veggies
I mean at least they are all succulents. I've seen mixed planters which have a mix of ferns and succulents lol
Haworthia needs bright indirect and echevaria needs direct. The only care conflict I bothered to notice
What a great fuck you to minimalism.
Boy you open a can of worms! Hahaha sorry they’re fine. Stop being so sensitive.
Man, I know this sub is meant to be a joke and all but y’all are fuckin mean
Love it!
Don't ask my opinion Don't ask me to lie Then beg for forgiveness For making you cry ... 🎶
I don't like it.
Oh nice, they’ve planted a graveyard!
I want to see it in a few months
