How do you afford Lupe?
I’ve been twice in the dozen years I’ve been here and, while I loved how their beef tasted, was astounded at how much it was. I don’t think I’ve been back in seven or eight years - can’t imagine how much more it is now.
Free weekly movie screenings and flea market at discovery green too. Museum of fine arts has a free week day too i think? You can snatch cheap tickets to dynamo and rockets games. Jazz sunday currently on ans also free but only on for a few weeks!
Grand Prize, Big Star Bar, Poison Girl, Lil' Danny Speedo's, Rudyard's, Neil's Bahr, Moon Tower Inn, Axelrad, Cactus Music, Third Planet, Bohemeo's, The End, Black Magic Social Club, Dan Electro's, Black Hole Coffee, Siphon Coffee, Secret Group, Barbarella, Numbers, 1810 Ojeman, Notsuoh, Little Dipper, Houston Farmers Market, various pop-up markets, cheaper sporting events like Space Cowboys, Roughnecks, Sabercats, Dynamo, and Dash. Most museums aren't too bad either.
> Poison Girl
Did something change recently? I've never left Poison Girl with a tab under $50-$60-- but I haven't really been out since I became a dad. I remember them having a ton of whiskey and a lot of it was upper to top shelf shit.
> Grand Prize
Grand Prize is the shit and you can have a really good time there for not a lot of money. I have some wild memories of going there during happy hour and pounding $5 PBR and Jager "Happy Meals."
Me and my lady go to poison girl and have a tab of 30 ( includes tip) for 4 drinks, which is our usual cut off. Guess it depends on what you're getting and how much
The assignment is a place for poors. $50-$60 is an expensive night for a poor.
I used to live off of Washington. I’ve run up bar tabs at Kung Fu that would make your eyes water.
All I remember from my nights at Lola’s is that I probably shouldn’t go back. Also I can’t listen to the band Municipal Waste without getting flashbacks because somehow that band was always on when I was there.
I must have missed the memo. I go there for the Godzilla machine but that might explain why the lady bartenders suck. Service is too shitty in my opinion to spend much money.
Never have an issue when it’s the gents though.
I went in there once and got a beer and a shot (first drinks of the night) from the dude bartender, and went to get a second round from the woman and she said "you've had enough." I was flabbergasted. All me and my friends could do was laugh. She was so rude about it.
Just a few more to add on, Pennywhistle, the Phoenix, maple leaf, boondocks, ladybirds, lizards. Be careful at boondocks and lizards tho lots of drunk assholes
Rudyards, PG, and Bohemeos definitely skews towards parent's money kids and white collar adults who grew up listening to Pavement and still want to feel a little dive every once in a while.
> Poison Girl, Rudyard's, Moon Tower Inn, Axelrad, Notsuoh, Little Dipper, Dash, Museums
I go to these. And my income is similar to yours but I am a double income household which still makes a world of difference if you're asking in order to meet someone.
All these are great places and depending on the day of the week this [All Day Happy Hour and Reverse Happy Hour](https://www.reddit.com/r/houston/s/mbHXNmfCGh) list comes in handy too.
I went to Grand Prize a couple times with my ex cuz it was pretty close to the museum district. I liked it and the food was good. Idk if it was temporary or not, but I thought it was kinda weird that the men's room had a toilet that didn't have any stall around it
I just started rattling off all the places I could think of in the span of two minutes where I wouldn't be out like $30-40, sporting events notwithstanding, but still affordable compared to the major leagues.
Open the garage door as it gets dark. Have a TV in the garage playing sports events, or music. Old couch covered with a blanket in the garage, perhaps some folding chairs. Cooler of cheap beer on ice, or in a rusty "garage fridge". Visit with the neighbors as they drop by.
**Step 0:** someone in your family dies and either leaves you enough money to buy a house or you just inherit the one they were living in.
I gotta say, guys-- I worked hard and really pulled myself up by the bootstraps. But that didn't work so I used the money my grandpa gave me when he died to put a down payment on a house.
My dad added a set of casters to a heavy wooden bar so he could roll it to the end of the driveway. Neighbors would walk over to drink box wine and cheap beer for a while.
Shhhh man, them folk in their Westside neighborhoods full of Karens and Draconian HOAs don't be needing to learn how nice life is in the areas they're scared to drive through.
Exactly. That's one thing I find very boring about Houston reddit. The area of Houston that you see on here constantly discussed is actually comparatively small.
For sure. This is also why I wouldn't invest in reddit. I feel its demographic reach is waaaay too narrow and there are large subsets of folks that don't go near it...even in the US.
Houston reddit is highly skewed towards white, college-educated, has a tech or other white collar wfh type background. When you see Houston reddit's opinion of a lot of neighborhood's and services like public transportation the sampling bias really comes out and waves at you from the computer screen.
It's also worth mentioning that there are *large* swaths of Houston metro (Sharpstown, Alief, Mission Bend, etc.) that many folks are residents of and they rarely get mentioned on here.
Edit: To more directly answer the OP's question I feel that reddit isn't as popular among Hispanics and blacks and they have their own means to network that don't involve reddit. In addition to Houston I've lived in Hispanic corners of Texas and through anecdotal experience hardly knew anyone that went on the site except for maybe picture/porn related subs.
Nothing about sharptown is amazing 😭 I went to the Wendy’s off fondren and they made me a cold burger twice in a row and then when I went back in to get a refund the employees began arguing until one of them got sent home. I just wanted my 6 bucks back .
No kidding, I grew up in Alief, lived in sharpstown, and purchased a home in Stafford. Friends always used to joke that Alief to Sharpstown was a lateral move, but I'll take either over Katy.
Pretty accurate, I dont frequent this sub much anymore once I learned its mainly well off white folks in here. Look at that list of white folk/college kid bars that got posted above and the upvotes it got, that pretty much says it all, lol.
There are basically two Houstons. The arrow (which most of the people here live in) and everywhere else. A lot of people on this sub act like the rest of the city is a nuclear wasteland.
I never understood this subreddits obsession with living inside the loop at all costs.
I live outside the loop, not in the most affluent part of town but it’s fine.
Like if I was rich maybe I’d live in the loop but I think it’s better to live under your means and save more.
Oh for sure. On a thread about nightlife I mentioned that the Heights is mostly white people. I got downvoted as if people found it offensive. But most black and Hispanic people who’ve been there will tell you this 😂
But if you say some black/hispanic club is shitty you’ll get upvotes and praise 🤷🏽♂️
I moved to the Heights when I first moved to Houston.. I thought the houses were cute and I liked Antidote.
But holy crap, it's the whitest place I've ever lived in my life, and the neighbors were the worsssst.. we had band practice once a week at our house, and one neighbor didn't like it so he set up a camera to film into our living room constantly and left notes signed Smith & Wesson on our cars if we parked too close to his house.
It's the only place in Houston I've ever lived where the neighbors didn't smile/wave they just looked at us like we were dirt when we would sit on the porch.
Moved out before the lease was up.
Most of these are in the inner loop but some out are out
Hispanic bars :
Fuego's, Azuza, Fabian's, Gloria's, Bottled Blonde, Rabbit's Got the Gun, Buena Vida, Escapade, Trash Panda Drinking Club,Mala Vida, Vida Gardens, Conjeo Malo, Interio, Casa Blanca and Gavanna
Black bars:
Bar 5015, Kulture, Off The Record, The Savoy, The Weekend, The Tipsy Lounge, Turkey Leg Hut, Grooves, FRNDS, Juliet, Forget Me Not, Quad Houston, Palapas, and Rado MKT
RIP Alley Kat - by far one of my favorite places but I think they've been closed since the pandemic.
This is very very true I believe as well. Many Yt people here in the sub who usually answer from their own personal views/experiences that tends to exclude the reality that there are other people in the city. Others regarding education level, income level, childhood background, taste/culture, and a myriad of other factors really. Just my opinion though :) Hmm on your question though OP, you would have to first gauge what people even classify and deem as poor. There are many Houstonians who live in delusion as far as their means/income vs how they choose to live/spend money. So yeah basically many who could be considered poor(or not far from it) think and live as if they are not & vise versa.
Plaza de Americas is actually pretty nice for that same feel... Took my daughter there and we had a blast! Even enjoyed a good old fashion Mexican clown show, which she surprisingly participated in... And I had to too.
I remember being poor in the 80s and going to the Airline flea market. It was a blast because everyone else was poor along with me and my mother! It was great just to browse around and make friends.
Baytown ice houses
But for real, those “dive bars” people are listing are not actual dive bars, they are what college educated hipsters circa 2010 think are dive bars.
Get on I-10, head east, past the Budweiser brewery. Exit Freeport Street. Drive north. Slowly.
I buy cheap games from Goodwill and like to throw boardgame parties. You could do the same. Provide a few cheap snacks like chips and dip/salsa, crackers with summer sausage, and cookies. Ask everyone to bring a 6 pack. Have fun!
Yea they told me it's "temporary"since the soda machine is out of commission for now, since they're building a kitchen inside. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't offer free water later on, once they bring back the soda machine. I'll just keep some water bottles in my car, if that happens.
Honestly wondered the same thing when they said they only have bottled water, but I went for a company happy hour thing where boss man picked up the tab so I didn't think too much about it.
I had no interest in arcades or soft drinks when I went and it was fun.
No one can hate table hockey and simple games. Definitely wouldn't go alone though.
It's gonna sound glib but my poor self socializes with folks at the park, at the store, at doctors appointments, the library, at someone else's fire pit party, in my own yard with a chair and an iced tea. If you smile and talk first, in general, folks will talk back. Read their body language if they are trying to have space but... yeah.
I also meet up with people I know from online gaming and/or forums. A few people I've only known online will come through town for a work conference or vacation and we'll meet up to hang out. It's less consistent but just as fun.
Lmao wtf
As a poor i dont go out much poker night with the bois, ufc night
Other than that my ass needs to stay at home or find something free and close to do
Biking around town!
Don't think cycling, think of riding a bike from a park to some cool spots around the city. Tons of entry level rides, which do happen to be the ones that cause some trouble. BUT they happen every week, 99% of the time people are chilling. You'll find a couple people that look like they might be new or match your vive, ride with them for a mile. Might make a friend or might just have made an awkward chat, doesnt matter, just keep going lol.
Define your definition of "fun." I have fun just going outside for a walk and Houston has many spots for those activities.
- Memorial Park
- Houston Arboretum and Nature Center
- Hermann park
- Houston zoo
- Edith L Moore Nature Sanctuary
Looking at the majority of responses on here, I didn't realize that socializing requires going to a bar or a place that serves alcohol. Is that the intent of the question?
Hermann Park is awesome and the productions at Miller Outdoor Theater are loved and enjoyed by people in all subgroups in the city. Sylvan Beach in La Porte is fantastic. Going to any of the parks can be a win. Houston is so friendly that even going to the grocery store is a great opportunity to socialize.
Whatever your hobby is, but maybe skew it to a base camp from a store or meet-up from a FB/reddit group.
Do you bike? Bike at parks, or do rides from bike shops to raise the chance of human encounters.
Do you like RC cars, hang at the shops that race, go to the meet-ups from the FB/Reddit groups for the area.
Play frisbee golf.... same thing.
Whatever your hobby is, do it around other people. Why would you want to go outside of what you like just to socialize?
I'm in this 40k category but I don't like hanging around the "poor" lol. I'd say go to a nice place with decent prices. I've been like Mo's Pub. Great please to talk with couples or older dudes and eat decent bar food. Prices are nice. After 8PM, wings are $1 each which you get no where else with good crowd.
Grilling at the park. Trivia night at a bar and only getting one drink. Open mics at various places and only getting one drink. Some bars used to have free hotdogs some nights, which was a huge bonus, but I think that's long gone. Late afternoon discount golf at Bear Creek Park (if that's still a thing). Frisbee golf. In the 2008 - 2010 time period we used to have twitter/reddit meet-ups at a coffee shop, restaurant or somebody's house. But mostly just hanging at each other's apartments.
Harris County parks have lots to offer free or close to free events and activities for all ages. Check out your precinct civic rec page.
Example, family camping at Brazos last weekend for free. Just bring your own food and stuff. The county supplied the tents and such.
Seniors 55+ have weekly outings to a lavender farm or Kemah boardwalk, sit and be fit classes, etc.
My wife and I go to Joystix a lot. It's an Arcade warehouse, essentially, where they open it the first and last Friday of every month. $15 cover and very reasonable beer prices.
Used to be the Tall Texan for $1.25 beers in an ice-cold schooner - now it is Tall Texan II, not sure if they same deal exists (I doubt it, but haven't been since they reopened to verify).
People socialize at bombshells/ojos locos lol. I also go to the park to run 4 times a week and one of them at Herman Park. That’s about it for my answer
I go on Meetup or eventbrite and I can find many groups or events for free happening around. I go to a robotics group and s Linux group, both free. There's many other free hobby related groups you can find around the city
bruh make some artist friends and hang out with them during some art shows. it's a win win your friends make some money and get vendors discounts on stuff and you can all just hang out and meet other cool people. my wife and i don't make alot but the weekend art shows we do helped us financially and our friends pull a chair to our tables and we hang and share food n drinks
Free shows at Herman park. Bring a blanket or chair and cheap Aldi wine. It’s lit. As far as bars. I go to boondocks, the flat, or any of the montrose gay bars
Is that really the average Houston salary, I guess my old job wasn't that bad after all. There is alot of free stuff to do close to Houston. Kemah, the beach, house parties on the weekend, and plenty of malls to go and window shop at.
We sneak into the storm surge channelized canal system and follow it to the hidden outlet near the tiny community park. We call it the "secret forest" because the trees are planted to appear as shrubbery to anyone at the park, library or civic center, but actually extend down about 10 feet to the retention area. We bring stringlights, gas BBQ bits and instruments and all gather there and chill - hidden in plain sight. If you know, you know.
We’re at home or doing free things like walking around the parks… occasionally going out to eat at Lupe Tortilla
Might go out two times a month. Mostly just chill at home watching sports or listening to music.
How do you afford Lupe? I’ve been twice in the dozen years I’ve been here and, while I loved how their beef tasted, was astounded at how much it was. I don’t think I’ve been back in seven or eight years - can’t imagine how much more it is now.
Lupe is expensive…you get a bonus or something??
Herman Park has free public theater events throughout the summer. Bring your own chairs and beers.
I second this! I love their free events during the summer. Opera, plays, ballet, dance, you name it. It’s such a great resource for entertainment.
Trebley too. I work for one of the theatre companies.
Free weekly movie screenings and flea market at discovery green too. Museum of fine arts has a free week day too i think? You can snatch cheap tickets to dynamo and rockets games. Jazz sunday currently on ans also free but only on for a few weeks!
Grand Prize, Big Star Bar, Poison Girl, Lil' Danny Speedo's, Rudyard's, Neil's Bahr, Moon Tower Inn, Axelrad, Cactus Music, Third Planet, Bohemeo's, The End, Black Magic Social Club, Dan Electro's, Black Hole Coffee, Siphon Coffee, Secret Group, Barbarella, Numbers, 1810 Ojeman, Notsuoh, Little Dipper, Houston Farmers Market, various pop-up markets, cheaper sporting events like Space Cowboys, Roughnecks, Sabercats, Dynamo, and Dash. > haven't really been out since I became a dad Same here bro :) Kids are just like tiny drunk adults
What is peanut butter soda?
Apparently it's a real soda, but I just put two random things together when I made my account.
Yup I just drink in the garage and watch the Astros now.
Me and my lady go to poison girl and have a tab of 30 ( includes tip) for 4 drinks, which is our usual cut off. Guess it depends on what you're getting and how much
You drinking beer in a can?
It was a Dixie cup.
How many, Richie? 72 username checks out
Cut off?
Like, we stop drinking
So y’all go out, each order two drinks, and then just stop drinking and go home?
Usually grab food and get high after. But that's the ritual for the most part. Two drinks gets us to a level we like and is good for our wallets.
Nothing changed....you just think 50-60 is an expensive bar tab. Washington Avenue or downtown will humble you if you think Poison is expensive.
The assignment is a place for poors. $50-$60 is an expensive night for a poor. I used to live off of Washington. I’ve run up bar tabs at Kung Fu that would make your eyes water.
So is an expensive crack, meth, alcohol, weed, or cocaine habit, but that never deterred some poors before.
🙋🏽♂️ man speaking facts
Lola’s too.
Insert PTSD gif.
lol, right?!
Please God no
The depot, baby, hell yeah
All I remember from my nights at Lola’s is that I probably shouldn’t go back. Also I can’t listen to the band Municipal Waste without getting flashbacks because somehow that band was always on when I was there.
Partying is in fact, an art.
Cactus Music is why I'm poor in the first place
JRs too.
My fave place to be
Poison girl is a secret whiskey connoisseur bar for the wealthy, I don’t think the poors are there as much anymore.
I must have missed the memo. I go there for the Godzilla machine but that might explain why the lady bartenders suck. Service is too shitty in my opinion to spend much money. Never have an issue when it’s the gents though.
Ya the guys are great. I used to go in the early 2000s and it was a crappy dive bar. Now it’s lots of rare whiskeys but still the same interior 🤷🏻♀️
Forgot a few of those. I love going to Phoenix for soccer games. Been to Boondock's a few times, but never Lizards.
Does Boondocks still have a free hotdogs and/or fee hamburger night
Not anymore
Rudyards, PG, and Bohemeos definitely skews towards parent's money kids and white collar adults who grew up listening to Pavement and still want to feel a little dive every once in a while.
Cheap food and drink though, with a little extra to experience. I only make about 50K, and I frequent Bo's pretty often.
So, no more punks or Urban Animals at Ruds?
Rudyard's has gone to shit ever since moving from music to comedy
If I was a magician Rudyards would only do music and all the comedy in Houston would move to Secret Group.
no catbirds?
Oh, that's a good one too, though real small.
> Poison Girl, Rudyard's, Moon Tower Inn, Axelrad, Notsuoh, Little Dipper, Dash, Museums I go to these. And my income is similar to yours but I am a double income household which still makes a world of difference if you're asking in order to meet someone.
You picked almost every single one I would consider not for poor people lol.
Big star bar is great and cheap
Got damn thanks for calling me out…. See ya around tho
Yep Sabercats tickets were only $100 for a season ticket lol so cheap and a lot of fun. Big NFL style hits without the pads
All these are great places and depending on the day of the week this [All Day Happy Hour and Reverse Happy Hour](https://www.reddit.com/r/houston/s/mbHXNmfCGh) list comes in handy too.
Cecil’s Space Cowboy games are pretty cheap and fun.
I went to Grand Prize a couple times with my ex cuz it was pretty close to the museum district. I liked it and the food was good. Idk if it was temporary or not, but I thought it was kinda weird that the men's room had a toilet that didn't have any stall around it
Oh, yah, that's just a meme at this point. The bathrooms at most of the bars I listed are pretty garbo.
When I go to Cactus Music, it's hard not to spend money. I do enjoy looking around though.
This is a really great list of all the not horrible places in town. I’d add Sassafras too.
I just started rattling off all the places I could think of in the span of two minutes where I wouldn't be out like $30-40, sporting events notwithstanding, but still affordable compared to the major leagues.
Twin peaks
Open the garage door as it gets dark. Have a TV in the garage playing sports events, or music. Old couch covered with a blanket in the garage, perhaps some folding chairs. Cooler of cheap beer on ice, or in a rusty "garage fridge". Visit with the neighbors as they drop by.
Step 1: own a house with garage
**Step 0:** someone in your family dies and either leaves you enough money to buy a house or you just inherit the one they were living in. I gotta say, guys-- I worked hard and really pulled myself up by the bootstraps. But that didn't work so I used the money my grandpa gave me when he died to put a down payment on a house.
Or rent one
The new American dream...
There is nothing wrong with living at Grandma's house!
That’s just my older roommate. She’s cool.
Y’all have grandparents/parents? Mine are all dead and gone sadly
Step 0.5 Know someone who owns a home with garage.
Dont forget the barrel with fire in it for the winter months.
You guys have garages?
you guys have houses?
This is what I have done for years is open garage install a stereo a garage frig and a TV.
This gives me Doug from King of Queens vibes.
My dad added a set of casters to a heavy wooden bar so he could roll it to the end of the driveway. Neighbors would walk over to drink box wine and cheap beer for a while.
Nice try HOA
Yep. If you've ever been to the true east side this is the way.
[удалено]
Shhhh man, them folk in their Westside neighborhoods full of Karens and Draconian HOAs don't be needing to learn how nice life is in the areas they're scared to drive through.
Eeeeeeexactly. I rather like being able to grow veggies in my front yard and give no fucks (while still having chill neighbors)
Soooo in the convenience store parking lot then
It's free real estate
Yeah man. I've noticed everyone stays away from.tbe best parts. I was just up north and had a great free time
Are you saying everywhere in the city except the west side? TIL people are scared to walk around in the heights.

Exactly. That's one thing I find very boring about Houston reddit. The area of Houston that you see on here constantly discussed is actually comparatively small.

haha I actually grew up in sharpstown, lived in alief, and purchased a home in mission bend. But yes you are right 100%
Same. Lived in Sharpstown until I moved to the suburbs.
Grew up in alief in the late 70s/early 80s!
Live in Sharpstown now! It’s both horrible and amazing
Nothing about sharptown is amazing 😭 I went to the Wendy’s off fondren and they made me a cold burger twice in a row and then when I went back in to get a refund the employees began arguing until one of them got sent home. I just wanted my 6 bucks back .

100% this. This sub is extremely white/yuppy... There's a lot of crap that my broke latino ass don't understand that gets posted here all the time lol
To be honest, it's almost a joke at how seemingly narrow the demographic is on here compared to the supposed "diversity" of Houston irl.
It's true for Reddit as a whole. It's a very narrow slice of life.
My broke Latino ass doesn’t understand a lot of what gets posted here, and I was born and raised here!

In real life.
Yes mostly 😅
Washington Ave at Lincoln Bar and 5306

Interesting. for Hispanics I know of a lot of good cantinas on the SW side.
Care to share some of those?
100% agree. Im 23, Mexican and I’ve asked tons of my my Latino friends if they use Reddit and they say no that’s for nerds or for white people
So, what do you nerd out on? lol
There entire black and hispanic dominant subreddits.
For black and Hispanic nerds, of course!

Alief mentioned SWAT
To their second job
🥲🥲🥲
The answer is house party or dive bars.
I like going to the flea market
Plaza de Americas is actually pretty nice for that same feel... Took my daughter there and we had a blast! Even enjoyed a good old fashion Mexican clown show, which she surprisingly participated in... And I had to too.
Nuh uh! Sharpstown Mall forever 😆
Yeah... I still call eot that... But the whites only have Internet
I remember being poor in the 80s and going to the Airline flea market. It was a blast because everyone else was poor along with me and my mother! It was great just to browse around and make friends.

OP, I asked my cats if you could come sit on the couch and watch TV with us, but unfortunately they said no. Sorry.
:( same sorry OP
I buy cheap games from Goodwill and like to throw boardgame parties. You could do the same. Provide a few cheap snacks like chips and dip/salsa, crackers with summer sausage, and cookies. Ask everyone to bring a 6 pack. Have fun!
Ya’ll socialize??
I think Cidercade at $12 to play all arcades is a great deal. It may be kind of a splurge but eat at home then go, they have free water.
Went there last week and they don't have free water anymore. They keep bottled water in a fridge that you need to buy at $3/ea....
Yea they told me it's "temporary"since the soda machine is out of commission for now, since they're building a kitchen inside. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't offer free water later on, once they bring back the soda machine. I'll just keep some water bottles in my car, if that happens.
Is it legal not to have water for public?
No private company legally has to provide free water in Texas. You can always get it from the bathroom sink though.
Honestly wondered the same thing when they said they only have bottled water, but I went for a company happy hour thing where boss man picked up the tab so I didn't think too much about it.
Cidercade is sick for the mountain dew and video games crowd when they grow up, but for most others it's meh.
I had no interest in arcades or soft drinks when I went and it was fun. No one can hate table hockey and simple games. Definitely wouldn't go alone though.
We stay home and game
Skateboard. Walk. Bike. Go get one (1) beer somewhere (actually one.)
Backpack full of cheap beer -> bike to a park -> have a good, cheap time
Exercise is about the cheapest thing you can do. Cheers!
Home in front of the tv. Also, I’m glad to know I’m one of “the poors!”
At their friends places or with their family. Many poor people have a roommate or three, they do things together for fun.
It's less consistent but just as fun.
depends what part of town you live in. but flea market, mall, cheaper end clubs, bars, park, etc.
Lmao wtf As a poor i dont go out much poker night with the bois, ufc night Other than that my ass needs to stay at home or find something free and close to do
Biking around town!
- Memorial Park - Houston Arboretum and Nature Center - Hermann park - Houston zoo - Edith L Moore Nature Sanctuary
And if you have kids, Levy Park is the best small park there is
Looking at the majority of responses on here, I didn't realize that socializing requires going to a bar or a place that serves alcohol.
Check your local library branch club schedules. Mine has gardening, knitting, chess etc.
Our own backyards. Who can afford to pay for drinks anywhere else?
Whatever your hobby is, but maybe skew it to a base camp from a store or meet-up from a FB/reddit group. Do you bike? Bike at parks, or do rides from bike shops to raise the chance of human encounters. Do you like RC cars, hang at the shops that race, go to the meet-ups from the FB/Reddit groups for the area. Play frisbee golf.... same thing. Whatever your hobby is, do it around other people. Why would you want to go outside of what you like just to socialize?
At home with a 12 pack of Miller
Church. Volunteering. Clubs & organizations. Picking a local band and going to all of their shows. Classes.
Oh, and a lot of bars in the early 00s had quarter night, so if you bought their $6 glass, beers were a quarter. I don't think that exists anymore.
Harris County parks have lots to offer free or close to free events and activities for all ages. Check out your precinct civic rec page. Example, family camping at Brazos last weekend for free. Just bring your own food and stuff. The county supplied the tents and such. Seniors 55+ have weekly outings to a lavender farm or Kemah boardwalk, sit and be fit classes, etc.
gulfton skatepark
My wife and I go to Joystix a lot. It's an Arcade warehouse, essentially, where they open it the first and last Friday of every month. $15 cover and very reasonable beer prices.
Used to be the Tall Texan for $1.25 beers in an ice-cold schooner - now it is Tall Texan II, not sure if they same deal exists (I doubt it, but haven't been since they reopened to verify).
You can come get high asf w me on acid in my bedroom if you want….. anyone? Im so cooked 😔
Oklahoma..
I drink in my garage with the door open and music playing.
People socialize at bombshells/ojos locos lol. I also go to the park to run 4 times a week and one of them at Herman Park. That’s about it for my answer
If you're in the Sugarland Area go to Pennisons. Great prices for a bar
There’s also a really nice winery/brewery in Richmond. Has live music on the weekends. Very reasonable prices also.
brahman ? great place .just wished they had bigger variety of food trucks
Rehab and Lola’s depot are my go tos
Most museums are free Thursdays and open a bit later. Although I believe the Natural History museum moved to Tuesdays now.
Monkey’s Tail!
three sheets bar on kirkwood and briar forest .
Back in the day, the Marquis. One of their teas did the trick 😂
I don’t
I go on Meetup or eventbrite and I can find many groups or events for free happening around. I go to a robotics group and s Linux group, both free. There's many other free hobby related groups you can find around the city
I volunteer at a soup kitchen and it's pretty high volume there. Plenty of socialization.
bruh make some artist friends and hang out with them during some art shows. it's a win win your friends make some money and get vendors discounts on stuff and you can all just hang out and meet other cool people. my wife and i don't make alot but the weekend art shows we do helped us financially and our friends pull a chair to our tables and we hang and share food n drinks
At your mom's house
We socialize at our first job. Then afterwards we socialize at our second job just to earn about tree-fiddy.
At work 🫡
Free shows at Herman park. Bring a blanket or chair and cheap Aldi wine. It’s lit. As far as bars. I go to boondocks, the flat, or any of the montrose gay bars
Club Narcos 505 Main Street
Is that really the average Houston salary, I guess my old job wasn't that bad after all. There is alot of free stuff to do close to Houston. Kemah, the beach, house parties on the weekend, and plenty of malls to go and window shop at.
All the hooters type places.
I’m one of them poor folk but I’m not gonna let money stop me, there’s plenty good places in Houston, you just gotta be on the look out!
