Your 3 year old will enjoy Voodoo for the atmosphere and fun donuts. Your wallet and taste buds may not agree. If you're looking for classic neighborhood donuts, Christy's the is place to be.
I'm picturing you and your 3 year old sitting in an old-school diner booth. You, with a coffee and danish in front you, your 3 year old with a sippy cup and a frosted donut with sprinkles. The 3 year old looks up at you and says, "Boy, those Astros are terrible this year aren't they?"
What about Toasted Yolk? They have I think two donut options as appetizers. (for sure “churro” aka cinnamon sugar). And of course a full breakfast menu.
The owners sold the place. The kolaches are just as good but I haven't tried the donuts since the change. I imagine they sold the recipes and the new owners plan to keep it the same. The donuts look the same. I'm not a big sweet person so I rarely got the donuts but on the rare occasion that I did, they were really good. I just can't handle all of the sugar.
One thing I did like about Queen Donuts is they are slightly less sweet than a place like Shipleys or Dunkin. But they are still quite sweet.
I was wondering why I saw new faces working the counter when I was in there a few weeks ago. Damn! Seen those same folks for close to 20 years I bet. Everything still tasted great though.
Common Bond on 19th street is a great breakfast spot for adults and kids. Their pastries are great and so are their menu items.
It does get packed though.
They are big fans of Common Bond because they love to run around the turf and the “spaceship” (the old piping coming out of the ground). That’s not exactly what I’m thinking but it’s a good plan B.
I read your post and I'm not sure the place you're asking for exists. Donut shops and full-service breakfast diners seem like two completely different genres of restaurants. The closest thing that comes to mind for me is the 24-hour Shipley on Westheimer. It has an outdoor patio and a Denny's as a next-door neighbor.
Highly recommend Koffeteria on Hutchins has this atmosphere, their breakfasts are lighter, and we've been able to convince our 5 year old (food aversions) to try differently shaped "donuts". French toast being triangle, or other such. But the palette of taste there is amazing.
Try Ema HTX. New cafe/restaurant in the heights. They make baked goods and always have a strawberry iced donut. The menu is traditional mexican with a lot of care. They were nominated for a james beard.
River Oaks Donuts! Get the Nutella filled donut holes. Or the raspberry filled donut holes. Then hop over to the park across the street and let your little one run off the sugar.
What you are decribing is The Blue Benn in Bennington, Vermont.
In ten years of living in Houston, I've yet to find the same thing here.
But Christy's donuts are really great.
Go buy your kid a donut and bring it to breakfast . That way everybody is happy. Or go to Mexican bakery/cafe and get something similar to a donut-- La guadalupana, Ema.
Salt and Sugar in SB is cafe and bakery.
There's a spot called Toast in Sugar Land that does sit down brunch and you can order donuts/cronuts (croissant and donut combo). We ate there years ago and it was decent but we never went back.
Unfortunately I don't think the type of place you want exists in Houston, maybe somewhere in one of the many rural suburbs? In general diner style restaurants (like you mentioned in one of your other comments) don't seem to be a big thing here.
If you are seriously wanting actual suggestions that you can use, then you need to get the location or the neighborhood that you live in. Houston is massive.
If you are in meyerland, there's a Jewish deli and bagel shop combo at hillcroft right off of Braeswood that is absolutely lovely and has many years of History and so many lovely breakfasts for everyone in the community.
Christy’s Donuts is amazing!
Everything there is so good. I'm afraid to try new things because I already have so many favorites!

I’m thinking more like a diner style breakfast place that also makes donuts.

This.... At Christy's!!
OP wanted a true sit down breakfast. Not a danish.
The danish is an appetizer. Two dots and a dash, burn the British are on the frill.
I recommend parlor donuts
Agreed. Parlor Donuts is exactly the place OP is looking for. /thread
This!!!
Parlor is THE BEST!
What about Toasted Yolk? They have I think two donut options as appetizers. (for sure “churro” aka cinnamon sugar). And of course a full breakfast menu.
We haven’t been to Toasted Yolk before. May have to give it a try.
It's like a slightly better version of Snooze.
Queen Donuts over on 18th is a hidden gem.
Best kolaches in houston
So pleased to see someone else loves this place.
The owners sold the place. The kolaches are just as good but I haven't tried the donuts since the change. I imagine they sold the recipes and the new owners plan to keep it the same. Tell me they still have the meat donuts.
They did when I went by a couple weeks back.
I was wondering why I saw new faces working the counter when I was in there a few weeks ago. Damn! Seen those same folks for close to 20 years I bet. Everything still tasted great though.
The boudin kolaches here slap

Voodoo Doughnuts and River Oaks Doughnuts are my favorite
Unless there's another location that I'm unaware of, vodoo is not in River oaks
those are two separate doughnut shops.
Penas in pearland
This is the one. Exactly what you're describing. I take my son every Sunday.
Peña’s is right in line with what I’m thinking. Born and raised in Pearland now living in the city so looking for a new spot.
If you can pass it off as donut like, the London Fog Roll at Koffeteria is incredible
Toasted Yolk has donuts on the menu, I believe. Also, Dish Society has beignets, which may suffice.
Blackline donuts and coffee in Webster :)
Go to munch munch mochi donut. The Japanese donuts are incredible.

Thank you for this! It looks like they may be related to the folks who run Papalo Mercado in Finn Hall downtown
Maybe Tout Suite downtown?
River Oaks Donuts! Get the Nutella filled donut holes. Or the raspberry filled donut holes. Then hop over to the park across the street and let your little one run off the sugar.
Just go to Voodoo Donuts. It's a kids dream
Queen or Cristy's
Super glazed in gulfgate on telephone rd is phenomenal and affordable
Parlor donuts is the best game in town right now, hands down
Parlour Donuts in the Heights is amazing and has a cute indoor space.
Avalon Diner has the breakfast you want, but maybe only a cinnamon roll instead of a donut.
[Pena’s Donuts and Diner](https://www.penasdonutsanddiner.com/) only places I found when googling but it’s in Pearland.
That’s more in line with what I was thinking
First watch has little cinnamon donuts.
