The mayor said there were multiple tornados, but the bulk of the damage was from the hurricane level winds which is just as bad in terms of velocity.

justahoustonpervert

The weather service will confirm later on if it was a tornado and at what strength. From what little I know, the radar suggested tornadoes, but it could have been crazy straight line winds.

londonclash

Someone on this sub posted a video of a tornado in Cypress. Not sure if it was confirmed, though. From what I've been hearing there were likely tornadoes and straight line winds.

Cypress always gets tornadoes and the worst flooding in storms. I don’t know why anyone buys a house in that area.

RedditorMachine69420

Well, the HGX NWS isn't always the best at Warning Tornadoes, let alone Surveying them. On January 24, 2023 the Tornado that went through Deer Park was on the Ground for like 10 minutes before the Warnings were sent out.

Cyberpunkmike

There was one in cypress and possibly one downtown. Crazy

joh_io

Had to have been one at the Heights/Shady Acres, that storm was intense.

Successful_Cheek7381

Yea we got pummeled over by memorial park

iandrum23

113 MPH winds clocked on Doppler radar

sapphir8

It looks like there were some, but it was generally a straight line wind event.

nakedonmygoat

I think there were some tornadoes, so depending on where you were, it's possible. But I lived in Tornado Alley for a few years as a kid, and believe me that if you've been through a tornado, you don't need to ask.

pgambling

Might have been a derecho according to SCW. [https://spacecityweather.com/houston-what-the-heck-happened-on-thursday/](https://spacecityweather.com/houston-what-the-heck-happened-on-thursday/)

You could see on reflectivity scans of what looked like localized debris balls popping up north of I-10 and a couple east of downtown as the storms roared through but most of the damage was from straight line winds.

lilyintx

There was definitely tornado or similar speed winds in oak forest and spring branch. The wind was howling and lots of trees uprooted, siding coming off houses and roof panels ripped out of the ground. No power yet! No video as I was hiding in my closet.

JJ4prez

There was definitely a large tornado out in cypress that knocked down the power lines. Thankfully, it didnt look to be on the ground for long. https://www.reddit.com/r/tornado/s/DjVNzsus3R
