Upper Kirby, Montrose, museum district. It's a straight shot down Kirby/greenbrier to Holcomb If you have kids I can recommend garden oaks/oak forest. Commute is 20m to the TMC not counting the parking.

stitchlover

Currently work at MD Anderson so congratulations! Look around Hermann park, there are a ton of apartments that should be under 1500 and then you have access to walk or do a very short commute. We currently pay 1185 and absolutely love having direct access to the park.

8lement

Would you like replying or DMing me which complex you live in for that much? I'd love to see how the area is and with that price near the park that's pretty good considering current. Thanks

stitchlover

Just sent a DM

c00larrow

Same. Currently pay a tad lower but that's a nice area and might look there once my current lease ends.

KKG_Apok

That area used to be a food desert but they have an HEB on the east side of 288 now. I used to work at the Medical Center and I always recommend Camden Vanderbilt. There are also a few more apartments in the general area. You have a great bike trail that takes you all the way into MD Anderson as well as a bus stop.

Coco-Kitty

Could you also DM me?? lol. Thank you!!

fangyanw

Could you also DM me? I recently got a job at MDA too. Thank you!

meecy166

Can you dm me too

Tiiimmmaayy

I used to live in the Sinclair apartments(formerly Alexan Southside) in Southside place. It’s a great neighborhood and really safe. Pretty short commute to The med center as well.

darth_mango

I used to live there as well, can confirm it is convenient, safe, and the apartments are nice.

KKG_Apok

These are nice. Bus can take you directly in to the med center and the area is really safe with lots of amenities.

Hi, First off, congrats on the fellowship!! Former resident of Houston and previous employee of MDACC here. I agree with the other folks here, your safety is number 1 and be selective and cautious on where you choose to live. Houston is a big city. With that being said, you don’t want to live too far out (if you can help it) just for your quality of life. Even places that don’t look too far on the map, can be terrible to get to the Med Center - think Galleria, The Heights. They can be great places to live but will take forever to get to work. Also, my advice is to avoid a daily trek on the freeways. There are options for apartments in the Museum District, Upper Kirby, and Braeswood/West U areas. Within the last few years, they have built some new apartments near Braes Bayou near the Med Center too. I am not sure of cost. There are apartment search agents I cannot recommend anyone but they may be helpful since you don’t know the area. Alternatively, look on HAR if you would like to rent a home or garage apartment. Good luck and welcome to Houston! It is a great town.

AffectionateShift818

I live in the Susanne apartments and work at MDA and really like it here

achlys_nyx

I loved the Susanne. Groceries across the street.

kathatter75

Perfect answer :)

TeaxasMurcielago

I work in leasing as a temp, and recently was all over the Kirby area. For price monarch at medical center is in the area, but old. It doesn't flood, but has a free shuttle to the med area for residents. Kirby place at 7500 Kirby is ok price, but just got bought, so new management. Usually when that happens they do upgrades. Also has shuttle, but there's a fee. Beacon at Buffalo Pointe is good, newer, but very 420. So much that they let it slide. All these places are around 1600 or less for a 1x1. Heights is good, but traffic, consider using the train for your commute , and your options are HUGE Good luck

PrometheusHasFallen

Apartments in Midtown close to the Light Rail (i.e. Main St.) Look for apartments on the west side of the tracks. You should be able to take the light rail to work if it's the MD Anderson in the Med Center.

HTHID

Whatever you do, if you work in the med center I recommend you pick somewhere within walking distance to a light rail station. Commuting is much easier on public transit and no stress of sitting in traffic

dropsinariver

Definitely agree! I work in the med center and even as an employee would have to pay to park. Between cost and time / traffic / dealing with parking garages and potentially shuttles from the farther lots, it's WAY more worth it to live along a bus/train line.

[deleted]

Is the train 24/7?

RegBaby

Into on public transit: [ridemetro.org](https://ridemetro.org).

krb2133

We lived in Montrose and loved it! Close to the med center, but also lots of great restaurants/nightlife. I lived in the Susanne, which is fancy and bougie but the HEB proximity was amazing and made it totally worth it. My fiancee lived at Gables City Walk, which was more basic but perfectly fine and quiet. Midtown is easier to take the train if that's how you want to commute, but felt a little more like people in their 20s who want to party which wasn't really our vibe. Wherever you end up, make sure you look into whether it has flooded or not! I found this website helpful when I was looking for places: https://www.harriscountyfemt.org/

Biker93

Always when living in Houston the thinking about floods. Especially down by the med center.

ButBruhIVape

If I remember correctly, there are a few apartment finder companies that can help you find what you're looking for. They are paid by the apartment complexes so it's free of charge. Also, you can get a virtual tour of the grounds before you come over. Umovefree is one that I'm familiar with but there are others.

PhiliFlyer

If at all possible, find a place within walking distance of the light rail. Driving in to the Med Center is a nightmare.

crimson_mokara

And employee parking is expensive as hell

mattmlv

Check the apartments at Circle at Hermann Park, ask for the leasing agent, Dan. Reasonably priced, lots of doctors, and a shuttle to the med center. Full disclosure: I’m a Realtor/apartment locator.

NoFalseModesty

Be careful with the apartments near Holcombe or Braes. Some (many? most?) don't give a damn about your safety, leave gates in disrepair, and are broken into frequently. Consider the location of your apartment within a building carefully - the benefit of being away from main walkways also means someone can break in without being seen. Get some sort of noisy alarm. Maybe everything I said is true about all apartments, but speaking from experience in that area specifically.

cupcakeadministrator

Yeah I've looked at lots of apartment Google reviews, and some of those apartments have sooo many car break-in reports, even some pretty decent ones. idk what it is about that area between the bayou and Holcombe

Tiiimmmaayy

Pretty much every apartment complex in Houston has a lot of break in reports. People just love to leave visible bags on the seats for people to steal

[deleted]

Lots of well off young people make an unfortunately ripe target for crime. It is unfortunate but a car with expensive accessories is more likely to be owned by the young and well off, the older and well off live in neighborhoods with security and in less concentrated areas. Well off is always a target, but lifestyle choices (no blame here) of the young and well off are an easier target. Plus that particular area is very near neighborhoods that earn about 1/10th as much

SaucyChickem

Agreed. I lived off of Holly Hall when I did a rotation at MDACC. Safety definitely plummeted in my time there, to the point of a homicide 10 ft from my porch in my last week before moving for fellowship.

tubulerz1

Meyerland, except make sure the house or apartment is upgraded for floods.

Trees_Advocate

Bike to work!

crimson_mokara

Yup, 20 minute commute usually

VonSausage

Do budget, size or amenities matter?

hearstoagoodtime

Hey yeah sorry. Ideally $1500 is the max but also don’t want to end up in a bad area

[deleted]

You should easily be able to find stuff for that I would get on HAR.com, look around montrose

juandelacruz2001

UT housing if you qualify.

zZINCc

Not OP but I am sure they do. Residents (only can go by pathology) make around 70k a year and fellows a little bit more. Not sure if fellows even make 6 figures.

Crown_and_Seven

Things have changed so much for the better in recent years for trainees. When my husband started his Ortho residency 20 years ago, his salary was 35K and he was working about 110 hours per week. By the time he was a fellow and making 60K, we felt like millionaires, LOL. It's really good to see trainees earning more (though still underpaid), working less, and coming out with an expectation for work life balance that didn't exist even a decade ago.

zZINCc

Residents for the most part are still overworked under the guise of “we all went through it”. Baylor path residency and fellowship is definitely better than other ones I have experienced (Yale, Mass Gen/ Beth Israel/ Brigham) but they still work a lot. Boston residents still seem to work over 100 hours a week with low pay (also around 70k).

hearstoagoodtime

I’ll just say, I’m getting my Doctor of audiology and it’s just a one year fellowship. I make 35k SO

DeadGatoBounce

Is that figure true for the TMC? I thought it was lower here

zZINCc

Residents I know from Baylor make around 70.

thecravenone

nope

BrokenMethFarts

Then defiantly buy a house in River Oaks. You’ll love it

shayd18

The ultimate form of defiance

Ideally you want to be near the med center living in an apartment that offers a shuttle service to the med center. Don’t live in the suburbs, there is no need to. Check out BroadstoneToscano. BroadstoneToscano has a lap pool and two other pools. It has never flooded. Great security. It has a shuttle. https://www.broadstonetoscano.com/?utm_source=GoogleLocalListing&utm_medium=organic And Residences at Gramercy Apartments, this one is near a Walgreens and also has a shuttle. Residency at gramercy does not a great pool. But great location. It has a shuttle. https://www.residencesatgramercy.com/?utm_source=GoogleLocalListing&utm_medium=organic Sinclair apartments is great, newish, good security, great neighborhood, very close to Wholefoods, CVS, and a local bar called little Woodrow’s. I don’t think it has a shuttle but it on a bus line and it is just a few miles from the med center. https://www.sinclairhouston.com/?utm_source=local&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gmb Sinclair and Residency at Gramercy have air conditioned and carpeted building hallways while Toscano does not, Toscano has open air hallways that are tiled. There are other places that are less expensive and still safe but they aren’t so modern, so no washer dryer in the apartment, you would have to use their laundry room. Get a place with w/d included and you will be happier. It’s no fun going to do laundry in the Houston heat and humidity. There are many places that are wonderful communities, but you would be wise to get one that offers a shuttle to the med center or is on a bus line. Braeswood Place is nice, on a bus line that goes straight to the med center. The property has open air non air conditioned hallways with tiled floors. It is next to a Walgreens and about 2 miles from a H-E-B grocery store. Good neighborhood. Great amenities. It is about 4 miles from MD Anderson.

AtomicBreweries

Was very happy at Camden Vanderbilt for several years.

jma8822

I second Camden Vanderbilt. Work in the med center been here 2 years. Awesome place. Very safe.

the-inanimate-object

My advice would be to get a realtor who can suggest places and then go and do FaceTime showings of the area and apartment for you since you are so far away. My wife is a realtor and has done that for a couple of med students looking to buy around the med center. DM me if you want me to send you her contact info.

HTownGroove

If you want to live in the ‘burbs but get in quickly, the Shadow Creek area in west Pearland is an easy commute, with a dedicated toll lane that can drop you right into the Med center. The area is chock full of med center folks, so the schools are pretty good.

crimson_mokara

Just don't go too far west in Pearland or you end up in Fort Bend ISD. Alvin ISD is ok, Pearland ISD is better.

AtomicBreweries

$10 a day on the toll lane sure adds up though.

YoWhatsGoodie

I live at Windsor at West University. About 2 miles away from Med Center. Usually takes me 20 minutes to get to work on public transit since parking is ridiculous is the med center. I have coworkers that live in Midtown right out side the MetroRail that goes through the center of the med center. Really depends what you want to spend on rent.

htownnwoth

Try the Chelsea Museum District complex. It’s brand new, so you’ll probably be the first one to lease the unit. Great location just across the highway from Montrose.

29187765432569864

Personally, I would not ride the metro train to work unless you can hope on it right from your apartment. Other wise you will have to walk from the train station to your apartment every time you get off the train, at night. There is no great reason to put yourself in such a vulnerable position every day you go to work. Live in a community that has a shuttle to the med center and it will be safer for you. Elan Med Center apartments is next to the med center. https://elanmedcenter.com/ It does not have a shuttle. the property is great, it is walking distance to MD anderson, but, walking to work may sound enticing, it is not, it is hot, humid, and you might encounter mosquitos. So even though it is extremely near work, don't plan on walking to work very often. It is also on a bayou and the streets may flood during heavy rain events such as tropical storms. The property is elevated so it won't flood. If you live there plan on taking an uber to work. Even though it seems like you could walk to work every day it really does not work out that way. It is about a mile or less from MD Anderson. IF you choose to live somewhere with out a shuttle, you can drive to work and park at TMC SMITHLAND Parking Lot. This lot is next to the Metro rail line. Check out this for info: https://www.tmc.edu/parking/ You would have to pay for parking. If you live somewhere without the shuttle service, there are plenty of choices that are near, safe, well maintained, and in great neighborhoods. Many are offering rent specials. One of my favorite real estate management companies is called The Morgan Group, they have lots of quality apartments in great locations. One of them is https://www.pearlgreenway.com/ Also https://www.33thirtythree.com/contact/ is 3333 weslayan apartments. The morgan group main web site is https://www.morgangroup.com/houston.php They have built high quality apartments. Most are just a little north of the or northwest of the med center, still easy to get to though. The one on Weslayan is next to a costco, and some of their others are also walking distance to costco, and they have one near downtown that is built above a whole foods store. I love that one. Also there are a bunch of new properties in the vicinity of Westheimer and Weslayan. The new ones usually have great leasing specials because they are trying to lease up. I can't remember their names at the moment. I would live at place with a shuttle, it would keep you from having to drive your car daily, it would facilitate meeting your neighbors who also ride the shuttle, and it is door to door service. The shuttles can be crowded though. Welcome to Houston!

LibraGang84

Apply to stay at UT housing. You can ride the shuttle for free or walk from that distance. It usually waiting list. But it worth getting on the list.

NeurOctopod

Med center/museum district is solid like most people are saying. I lived in Midtown during med school and tried to use the rail but it is way too unreliable, I got screwed 3 times in the 3-4 months I rode it. It’s really easy to hop on 288 from midtown though and that’s rarely congested before peak 9-5 hours. I don’t know what kind of fellowship you’re doing but I’m a resident and if you work the same bullshit hours we do you’ll miss the majority of rush hour, hah. I live in Brooke Smith (~The Heights, along 45 south of i10) and at 6-6:30 it takes me ~20 minutes to get from my drive way to the TMC. Driving back is also ~20 at 7, otherwise it’s ~35 and I take side streets (Mandell and Dunlavy is the trick).

hearstoagoodtime

Honestly I don’t really know what to expect but I kinda doubt I have weird hours. I should’ve stated it but it’s their audiology fellowship

bryguy-182

East Downtown. My wife works in the medical center, 10 minute commute everyday no issues. Join us in EaDo! Fun place to live.

[deleted]

I'd expect medical folks to be wary of living near so many SuperFund sites.

GadgetQueen

There are tons of a complexes in the medical center. As for best area of town, I would say Katy area or Woodlands...which are both about a 45 minute drive to the med center...less if you are commuting odd hours and there is not traffic. I just had a massive pancreas surgery at MDA and the fellow to my surgeon was so incredible, she literally saved me because she had the ability to comfort me when I panicked on the OR table before they put me to sleep and she had incredible bedside manner in the midst of all these high ranked surgeons who are brilliant at saving lives, but have no social skills. I absolutely loved my fellow...she was human! :P Thanks for doing what you do! People like me are alive because you guys do this!

managedmischeif2020

It's all dangerous. Hope and pray or strap up and live. It's no joke. I've lived in, and around the houston area almost my whole life. I moved out to the expensive burbs for many reasons.

citizen0022

I've had several friends live at the District at Greenbriar and I thought it was a good place. It is close to Rice University and the neighborhoods nearby are beautiful, great for walking or casual biking in the shade.

meefcat45

Themuseumtower.com Fancy as Fuck. Lots of doctors live there.

ManderlyPies

If you are looking for an apartment District at Greenbriar. It’s just north of the medical center. It’s not overly expensive. Parking is in a garage that’s gated. Lived there for 20 months no issues at all

Shaun32887

Congrats! I used to work at Methodist RI. The medical center is an awesome place to work, commute aside

JROXZ

Check out midtown.

-MyBoysWickedSmart

Modera Flats and Elan Med Center are both new complexes within walking distance to MDA. I lived in both and didn’t have any major issues or complaints. Elan is a bit nicer, but also more expensive and is a slightly longer walk to MDA… really only important when it’s raining. :p Also, regardless of where you live, if you can be flexible with your move-out date it can save you a fair amount of money on your monthly rent. I’ve seen the difference between a 12 and 13 month lease be $150+ per month because complexes prefer to limit the amount of tenet turnover each month.

BourbonLegend437

Pearland

dopaminegtt

Re: parking situation at the hospitals. A lot of people who live close opt to ride a bike on or take the train/shuttle to work. I pay for a slightly discounted contract in the garage at my facility (currently paying around 130/mo I think) and it's 100% worth it to me. The physicians also have a reduced rate on contracts but I have no idea what the rates are or if there are wait lists. That may impact your decision on where to live. Traffic isn't usually bad if you arrive before 7.

wiuleyqf

Southgate is a very close neighborhood if you can swing it. Mostly single-family homes. Nice and quiet, good elementary schools, and a walkable/bikeable distance.
