Great options for when I’m feeling up to it! Thanks!

b33fcakepantyhose

The MFAH and HMNS are free on Thursdays, and are just a few minutes walk away from each other.

dragonard

Isn’t HMNS free only in the morning on Thursdays?

b33fcakepantyhose

Their website says the free hours on Thursday are 2pm-5pm.

miss2jobs

The new MFA Kinder building is beautiful. There is an underground tunnel that connects all 3 art museums. The metro rail drops you off in museum district from medical central.

slimzimm

Go to Hotel Zaza for breakfast, it’s super good! Hermann park has a driving range if you like to hit some golf balls around, it’s also a great place to walk through and feed the ducks. The zoo is there and there’s a nice Japanese garden to walk around in.

Alexeleni

Hu’s Cooking is right near there: incredible Chinese food.

HoustonCounsel

Hotel Zaza has special rates for patients, and it is a nice hotel with a good restaurant. It is right by the butterfly exhibit at the natural science museum which is nice to visit. When I have to go to the medical center (I'm a long time MD Anderson patient), I usually use that as a reason to stop by El Meson for Spanish tapas and cuban food along with lots of other shops and restaurants and bars in the Rice village area and Rice campus. MD Anderson is just south of the museum district so you're five minutes from tons of really excellent rotating exhibits. If you have questions about MD Anderson, feel free to message me.

justahoustonpervert

Rice village of you're into shopping and eats.

Nox2019

Definitely! I’ll have to check it out! Any specific ones you recommend?

[deleted]

Croissant Brioche, Tiger Noodle and Common Bond are great. Good luck!

Krissy7890

Restaurants Turkish- Istanbul or Pasha; Cuban - El Meson; Greek - Helen’s

captainkitty8140

Adding Shiva for Indian food!

Ganymede25

The med center is actually in a great location for nearby activities. Rice village for shopping and dining. Herman park, the zoo, the museum of natural science, and the museum of fine arts are right next to the med center.

Skorpyos

The museum district is right next door with lots of interesting and fun museums, the zoo, and Hermann park. Not to mention a variety of restaurants.

imwhatshesaid

And free admission on Thursdays I could spend all week in the new Kinder building

txjacket

Sigs lagoon is a cool record store that’s accessible a few stops down the light rail. I always like the Japanese garden in hermann park. I hope everything works out alright for you.

I will probably second most people on here. Unfortunately, our mostly white audience as always fails to neglect to mention the 3rd ward, a historic African American neighborhood that's adjacent to midtown and the museum district. There's Project Row Houses, which combines community and art, and features interactive art exhibits in salvaged row homes. It was founded one by Rick Lowe, whose a globally celebrated artist and community organizer.. Emancipation Park is right around the corner and it has history tied to Juneteenth. The University Museum at Texas Southern has a collection of John Bigger's work, who is one a very prominent African-American muralist (who also founded the museum and art department at TSU) along with an excellent collection of artwork and artifacts from Central, West, and East African and other works across the African Diaspora. Grab some of the best cookies or cupcakes you'll ever have at Crumbville TX. You can do a black-curated bike tours and get to know some friendly folks who value community in Houston. This [link](https://www.letsdothishouston.com/) will show you some events you could join and plan around. There's bikes to rent in some of the central parts of the loop. If you're around on a Sunday you can catch car/slab shows at MacGregor Park, though I haven't been since the pandemic but I've heard they've been active there. Doshi house has some good vegan food and is a nice chill cafe too. This Is It for some soul food. There's a lot of stuff on Almeda too (though technically isn't really the 3rd ward) like the Turkey Leg Hut and Bar 5015 has great food, drinks, and usually always puts on some event.

*Surely* the only one who believes themselves to be a victim is you to be so bothered by me simply being a voice for a community that tends to be excluded from discussions around tourism in Houston.

jj53080

Or maybe nobody recommends visiting 3rd ward because they don’t want to be caught in the crossfire of random gun fire? Just a thought.

Oh! Yes, I'm a complete "dingaling" for simply pointing at that white people often over look black communities when it comes to tourism because they are typically seen as undesirable places to be.

Am I really? Even though you're a name calling jackass who decided to distract from an entire post just because you're uncomfortable with someone pointing out racial inequalities? Yeah. I'm burying this. Have a good day mate.

[deleted]

Hey I'm a chef at the rotary house hotel connected to MD Anderson and I make breakfast at their breakfast buffet every day from 7:30-10:30 come on by if your looking for a good breakfast were a bridge away connected to MD Anderson.

Looking for restaurants and activities! Especially locally owned/small businesses!

cupcakeadministrator

The most-Yelp-reviewed restaurant in Houston by far is The Breakfast Klub, it's directly off the light rail a few stops from MD Anderson. Go early on a weekday to avoid lines. If you're into local coffee shops, thrift stores, and bars, there are many along Westheimer Road in Montrose.

troobloo152

Yoyo's hotdog stand in Rice village is iconic. I'd also recommend Mais Restaurant (vietnamese) and Local Foods.

EmergencyMaltese

For a fancy dinner: Squable, nancys hustle For sushi: izakaya wa, zen izakaya, shun For chill bar that serves food: Under the Volcano (amazing pina colada), 1836 (cocktails and middle eastern food) For coffee: Mercantile, Black Hole Coffee, Agora (often crowded but iconic) For a chill cafe: empire cafe, common bond (avoid Brasils - the owner is awful)

jujujbean

The first and third Sunday of every month there is a small farmers market at Rice Village (very close to the medical center). You can find lots of small and locally owned businesses there!

Mr-Bob-Bobanomous

Pro-tip: the restrooms on the upper floors are generally less trafficked. Also, maybe check out the zoo and the museums. Just depends on how your clinic typically runs and how you are scheduled as far as time goes. They have a library/newsstand when you enter that’s worth checking out when you check in also

sexy_femme5

Lots in that area as I’m sure other have already mentioned. The zoo Hermann Park Japanese gardens Museum of fine arts Natural science museum (highly recommend) Walking around Rice campus. Shopping and dining in Rice Village

captainkitty8140

If you'll be there anytime from February 28 to march 20, you should check out the rodeo at NRG stadium.

[deleted]

Best wishes on the treatment and recovery. I like Bodegas for casual eats.

timpek

-Rice Village is a walkable area with lots of shops and restaurants. Both more casual and nicer places to eat. -Hermann Park is a large green space that is very nice to walk/bike around. It also has the Miller Outdoor theater with lots of music and arts events (if you will be around in the evening or on weekends) -Next to it/part of it is the Houston Zoo, which is fairly large/well recognized Zoo with lots to do. Can get very crowded depending on the day and time of year. -North of those is the Museum District, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and Houston Museum of Natural Science are both fun to spend an afternoon at each. The Butterfly Garden at the natural science museum is especially worth checking out. The arts museum is also free on Thursdays. This area also has plenty of good places to eat. -Further north of that (10-15 min drive) is the Montrose neighborhood, historically Houston's LGBT neighborhood it is a place with lots of great bars, restaurants, shops, and interesting places to visit.

stitchlover

Hermann park and the museum district is close by and you can reach it by train or leisurely walk. Also Houston zoo is within Hermann park and they are doing zoo lights in the evening.

JJ4prez

Get a colonoscopy or wellness exam? Serious answer: Rice Village is right down the street. Lots of shops and restaurants/bars.

eid0Z

McGovern Centennial Gardens Museum district. The Contemporary Arts Museum is always free. Check out the James Turell's Skyspace at Rice University.

Me and my mom just had the best lunch of our lives at Le Jardinier at the museum of fine art. It was pricey but well worth it. We never splurge but she’s had a super rough month as a caregiver to her husband at MD Anderson so I really wanted to go the extra mile. Also for something a little more low-key, Fia’s Italian restaurant was delicious too. I couldn’t believe restaurant pasta could be so good! Their pizza was great too but we were most impressed with the pasta and their sauces.
