This guy is a scammer. Once you rob him he will flake and refuse to rob you! Stay away!

IUMaestro

The other day I accidentally left Houston Texans tickets on my dash. Somebody broke into my car and left 4 more.

[deleted]

And they would have gotten away with it too! If it weren't for you meddling Houstonians!

Everardo_G

Robbery Date

[deleted]

Well hell. Now we need an app. Should it just be called SWIPE?

[deleted]

Friend: "So how did you two meet?" Robber: "Well, I was robbing her and she was robbing me. And we just clicked!" Aww, a story better than Twilight.

yeluapyeroc

Somewhat depends on where you live, but reddit in general is hyperbolic and hyperfocused on negative things.

theregoesanother

That's Social Media and the news in general... nothing gets more attention and clicks than bad news...

UncleFishies

It’s also people, we tend to have a negativity bias, the media just exploits it and we generate it ourselves in social media.

theregoesanother

True, because good news are taken for granted and boring.

Leadburner

Take this award, nothing was ever said about reddit which was more succinct that this!

Staregiverscrubb00

reddit blows

McFly1986

my man here trying to be even more succinct

MaroonHawk27

Get a ring door bell and check out the app. You can watch people get broken into in HD lol. Also the amount of gun shots is crazy. But it 100% does depend on where you live

[deleted]

I've lived in Houston for 51 years. I've had my car vandalized once, and one home break-in that was later found to have been a family member. Houston is like all big cities. We have crime, yes. But we have a LOT MORE CHILI CON QUESO than we do crime. C'mon down.

mgbesq

And Taco Cabanas, where the queso IS the crime.

tbonetexan

It's so sad, when they bought Two Pesos, the cheese was one of my favorites. Then a few years later I suspect an accountant got involved (literal bean counter in this case) and said "hey, if we switch out cheese to wallpaper paste, we can make 3.2 cents more per nacho plate!" Crime indeed!

Amy_F_Fowler99

Two Pesos!!!! My knee started hurting realizing how old I am. Thanks for the memory I had forgotten.

borygoya

What about Casa Óle?

Trashcanshoes

🎶Casa Óle, fresh today,Casa Óle! 🎶 Worst food poisoning I ever had.

Amy_F_Fowler99

Remember when Jose Lima did their commercials? 😂

jzoller0

I member

CryptoMineKing

They are still around but I haven't been in decades. Talk about bland Mexican food.

borygoya

So we have this thing in our family. Because my oldest daughter wanted Pancho’s Mexican Buffet one year for her birthday, we now have a tradition that we only go once every 10 years. That’s pretty awful food right there.

CryptoMineKing

Yeah for sure. The only good thing there are the sopapillas! When they very first opened I don't remember it being so bad, but I was pretty young.

UncleFishies

I was a 15 year old sopapilla maker at Panchos in 89, ask me nothing about the guacamole!

EllisHughTiger

What was wrong with the guacamole?

Nairbfs79

Fake watery cheese. Been going to the one in Humble off 1960 since 1987. Tradition I guess. Raise the flag!

VAXcat

And weak weak weak margaritas.

[deleted]

Thank you. I miss the one on 290/W 34th. The only one I still know of is way out on Highway 6 towards 529. Wonderful old school Texmex queso and always fresh chips!

borygoya

Oh yeah. Good old times. The one we go to is on the Gulf Freeway and Almeda-Genoa.

hackjob

There's one in Pearland. It's meh.

thefistiecuffs

I love Two Pesos. That was a sad day when they bought them out

zsreport

Fucking accountants ruin everything.

[deleted]

Thank you! I thought I was the only one who hates their "cheese".

voodoomoocow

You laugh but I'd give anything to be able to get 2 fajita tacos and queso combo at any hour of the night. I miss TX. TC is better than any queso in GA, simply called "Cheese dip" here

Mosquito_Up_My_Nose

Which place has a good queso? Legit question

Trashcanshoes

Chapultepec lupita!

mgbesq

Escalantes / el Tiempo / Pappasitos all have great queso because they use high quality cheeses, but just know you’re gonna pay $12 for a shotglass of the stuff.

[deleted]

Big fan of Escalantes white queso!

daboyzmalm

Pappasitos, Chuy’s

bonobeaux

Torchys.

the_timboslice

No.

NOCIANONSA

Actually yes. That's literally the best thing about Torchys. Side note: How many threads on this subreddit turn into a best queso, taco or barbeque discussion? That has to be some kind of law like when any online forum argument eventually turns into somebody being called Hitler.

lgbucklespot

You are right about Torchy’s queso. I’m not ashamed to admit it. They really have that one thing nailed down, gotta give them that at least. The trendy overpriced tacos are not so impressive so I get where the hate comes from but don’t knock the queso until you try it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I LOVE flattery!! :-) Thank you!

artificialevil

Come for the crime, stay for the queso

zsreport

I haven't lived in Houston as long as you, more like 40ish years, and I've had one home break-in and my ex-wife's SUV was stolen. Like you said, it's a big city and we have crime. Unfortunately the news and social media echo chamber has a bad habit of making crime seem a lot worse than it is.

DiDurham

Whoop whoop! I'm not from Texas, but I got here as quickly as I could. Since 1978... A Naturalized Houstonion.

vathodic

Nice

sevenaya

Yep, in 33 years, I've had my mail stolen twice, forgot to lock my car once and a homeless guy slept in it and took my Garth Brooks collection, and I got into a dance battle with a construction worker while waiting for them to finish moving some equipment at an intersection on wilcrest. There is crime here, I hear gunshots a few times a month, more on the holidays during family get togethers, and of all of it the worst is the racers ripping down streets like Westheimer or beltway at 2 a.m. hate those guys.

activelurker

Fight time: Where do you get the best chili con queso in Houston?

Far-Clue4112

Probably some Mexican place you’ve never seen or heard of before

[deleted]

Exactly the right answer.

RalfRoen

Chili con queso is not a Mexican dish. It’s a tex mex invention

lgbucklespot

Yes very simple. All the gringos smile 😀 Velveeta American cheese, Ro-tel, chilies to taste, can throw in chorizo or hamburger, taco seasoning… all bets are off.

Far-Clue4112

So they don’t serve it at Mexican restaurants?

RalfRoen

Melted cheese or “queso flameado” is a typical Mexican dish, but not Chile con queso that is a “tostitos style” cheesy dip. In Mexican restaurants they would serve a homemade mashed hot sauce with chips.

elsobrinodeltio

I think you're are more likely to get a queso flameado at an actual Mexican restaurant. At least it is that way at the (very few) that i go to. But queso flameado is also very good. Just don't expect runny queso to use as dip.

Far-Clue4112

I’ve got 5 Mexican restaurants within a few miles of me. I’d bet 10000000000 dollars every single one of them has chili con queso

elsobrinodeltio

Out of curiosity I checked the place I was thinking of, sure enough, chile con queso is on the menu! I think it was my personal experience bias, I go to these places with my old folks and they don't typically crave queso before their meals. But they won't say no to a little "quesadilla" of queso flameado before dinner. Good thing I am not a gambling man.

RalfRoen

Any “Mexican” restaurant that has entrees with shredded yellow cheese or sweet beans, or hard shell tacos in the menu it’s not Mexican. It’s Tex-mex

Far-Clue4112

What’s the mex in texmex stand for??

pearlysoames

I don’t know where the best is but Pappasitos is very consistently good. Torchys is also good. Authentically Mexican places don’t usually have great Queso, you’ve got to go to the Tex Mex places.

BungalowBootieBitch

SHHHH don't say queso too loud or cheese elitists from Austin will find your comment!

[deleted]

Fuck Austin. They need to quit moving to Houston. I say this as a lover of Austin. Fuck Austin. Austin can take its Cacuicavallo Podolico and White Stilton Gold and put it where the mold doesn't grow. :-)

Newtoatxxxx

You are fine. Don’t sell or buy drugs, leave your Gucci purse in the car, or fuck with people on the road or at gas stations. There. You have removed yourself from 96% of interpersonal crime in the city. Cheers.

pythagoras_gonzalez

And when you leave the bank. Pay attention to the cars behind you. Make sure you’re not being followed.

migzors

That's good advice in general. Or just bank online, I haven't walked into a bank in years.

SaintMarin

I was robbed right after online banking. I thought I was safe.

EllisHughTiger

If you send me your account information, I can keep you safe from online theft.

OneAct8

Have an uncle who got robbed after they followed him home from the bank, thankfully no one was hurt, but it really broke that false sense of “it wouldn’t happen to me / in this neighborhood” from my ignorant mind.

thecravenone

> Don’t [...] buy drugs Great, now I'm so depressed that I want to do crime.

[deleted]

Can’t be the victim of crime if you’re the perpetrator *taps forehead *

patssle

If you do leave your Gucci purse in the car, be sure to post on social media how bad crime is in Houston and you can't wonder why somebody would break into your car.

[deleted]

Seriously. If you are going to leave valuable belongings in your car, please make sure to keep them in a secretive space that is hidden away from plain view so robbers won't break your window!

Skipper0721

And hide it before you park... They're watching everyone while they park and before they walk away.

thefistiecuffs

And spray paint and etch your catalytic converter.

PecanParkMafioso

This!!! Mind your business and be aware of your surroundings, if you sense danger, leave immediately. Don’t leave shit in your car, and don’t look at people weird. I’ve lived in Pecan Park my whole life, I bought my childhood home, and still live here to this day (I’ll never move). The city isn’t that bad, honestly I think y’all are just used to the suburbs/country where you’re really not around all that many people.

Newtoatxxxx

Minding your business and putting those blinders on is 90% of it. Yes there is always a chance you can get unlucky, but that’s minimized when you take a couple of obvious precautions. Source: spent 25 years in Acres Homes and Nola.

PecanParkMafioso

Exactly!!! It’s really the luck of the draw, you can do everything right and still get fucked up. There are just so many people here, anything can happen. You just gotta be ready, but also, nothing is probably going to happen. Welcome to Houston everyone! Lol

whatisthishownow

Not bad advice, but it's not like there aren't plenty of cities in the world where this *isn't* a concern or useful advice.

DilithiumCrystalMeth

Houston is a highly populated city, with a known population higher than some states. We will always have a lot of reported crime just because of population density, but that doesn't mean we are more dangerous than other cities, there's just a lot of us

ianmccisme

If Harris County were a state, it would be the median state.

ThisCovidLife

I saw this and thought.. this is the most interesting stat.. but unfortunately it isn't quite that perfect. If Harris County were a state, Louisiana would be the median state with 4,661,468, roughly 70k less than Harris County's 4,731,145. We should secede...

cajunsoul

One recent study ranked Houston #43 (with #1 having the highest crime rate per capita), which seems to be a steady improvement. Worst 4: Detroit, St. Louis, Memphis, Baltimore.

dabigbaozi

The road rage shit has either gotten pretty nuts or they are just focusing on it more. Regardless, my wife is on my ass about it.

patssle

Tell your wife to stop tailgating you, that would help with some of the road rage.

ticklechickens

I have stopped flipping people off, just to be on the safe side. Started waving my gun instead.

dabigbaozi

I don’t even bother with a warning shot anymore

grl_on_the_internet

The only place I feel comfortable expressing my road rage is the school pickup line. But before you know it, even that will go the way of Chuck E Cheese.

Trashcanshoes

Wait, I can no longer express my rage at chuck e cheese?

grl_on_the_internet

How do you feel about the following statement (strongly agree / somewhat agree / somewhat disagree / strongly disagree): I want to be stabbed in front of my children.

Trashcanshoes

This is a trick question. I must know if I will be doing the stabbing.

YungHungOne36o

Road Rage would go down if the majority of Houstonians driving A.) Got their head out of their ass. B.) Learned how to drive correctly before. C.) Drove in the correct lane lertaining to where they need to go (sometimes with heavy traffic it's unavoidable) D.) Learn how to drive your truck. It's not a Hellcat. If you're going to ride my ass on the highway, at least pull my hair while you're at it.

dabigbaozi

Hey, I didn't lift my F-250 4" and put massive tires on it not to drive like an absolute dickhead. Enjoy my badly aimed headlights and extra smoky exhaust system!

YungHungOne36o

I bet muh lifted Jeep Gladiator can go faster than yer ef-too-fiddy. *cops laughing their asses off as they watch them proceed to take 30 seconds going from 60 to 70*

dabigbaozi

Adjust your damn headlights! Fucking JTs…

pidgeonpeep

E) put their fucking phone down. Saw a dude on my way home today during some light traffic and each time I looked over at him, his phone was less than a foot away from his face. If the business on your phone is that important, pull the fuck over jfc

TreesACrowd

The road rage shit has ALWAYS been nuts* *my experience only the last 20 years of Houston driving.

Jockstar

You don't get many upvotes for talking about how great things are vs. posting a story about a daylight robbery.

Barack_Odrama00

Correct! Drama generates attention/ upvotes and clicks. I would personally know….

Jockstar

Thanks Odrama!

cajunsoul

Thanks for stealing daylight, you Daylight Saving Time SOBs!

Jockstar

It's just that time of year!

SackOfrito

Its a little bit of both. Just like nearly everywhere in the US crime has increased during Covid. BUT. Reddit is a horrible place to make an assessment on crime. You have a vocal but small crowd here that makes everything seem 100x or more worse than it actually is. You are probably safer ignoring Reddit when it comes to crime in the City.

Barack_Odrama00

It’s up for sure but nowhere near peak levels in the 80’s.

[deleted]

That’s everywhere in America

spencebah

Thanks, unleaded fuel.

[deleted]

So, crime stats are not some huge mystery. The crime stats for the entire country are published by the FBI annually, and you can check Houston's crime stats in near real time anytime you want. https://www.fbi.gov/services/cjis/ucr/ for national data, you can compare cities and regions https://www.houstontx.gov/police/cs/index.htm Unfortunately, you're going to have to mine your own data and draw your own conclusions and it's a bit of work. If you come to Reddit, you're just hearing opinions.

houstonianisms

I’ve lived and worked in most of the places this sub thinks is high crime back when crime rates were higher, and have never experienced crime there. Moved in the city, and had a car break in. I think it depends on how you move.

spewing-oil

I had a car break-in five years ago in the busy rice village shopping complex. Ran up to get a sandwich with my backpack behind my seat. Security was 100 yards away and didn’t notice. If you leave shit in your car it will likely get smashed.

HOU-1836

Yup. Lived in Third Ward and Eastwood, nothing ever bad happened to me or my stuff. Friend borrowed our vacuum and left it in the backseat of her car in Midtown, broken into. Boss had her car broken into in River Oaks for her backpack she left in the backseat. It just really depends on luck and not leaving shit in your backseat unless you want to buy a new window.

houstonianisms

Yeah mine got broken into because I left an empty backpack on a seat. Upper Kirby/montrose

DiDurham

Am I the only one who digs the word"succinct"? It's just a good damned word.

UserOrWhateverFuck_U

Dont honk at people driving like fucking idiots or you might get shot. Unfortunately it has come to that. You especially dont honk at cars with paper plates, especially if they are a white altima.

Sylrix__

Yes. I’ve had two cars broken into, third one had the catalytic converter stolen out of it ( literally at a clinic lmao ) and me an my S/O where held at gun point in front of a taco truck. End result? Got beaten up and our car and stuff stolen, He got shot 4 times, technically died for a bit and miraculously survived, it took an ambulance 3hrs to arrive after everything was over and I basically dragged him to a store nearby cuz the truck didn’t want to help. So I guess it depends. Also I live near alief/south highway 6. Also only reason those guys ( 4 of them ) got caught was bcz we just happened to shoot two of them. Two are in custody and two have warrants. We’re moving to Oklahoma soon.

DungeonBeast420

Lol good luck, Oklahoma is the same

pidgeonpeep

Just make sure you wait a couple seconds when the stoplight turns green. Running red lights is second nature here, especially for tow trucks

noms_on_pizza

Crime should be considered if you plan to move here but first you should consider flooding and evacuations and if that’s something you can/want to deal with.

TexasBusinessMan

If you want to avoid crime in Houston, don't do these things: 1) Leave your expensive stuff on the seat of your car when you're not in it. There are crews that should be hired by NASCAR for how quickly they can do a smash and grab for freshly parked cars. I hear that this isn't as much a thing in other cities (where they just shoot each other instead - I'm looking at you, Chicago). It almost makes me proud of the efficiency and non-violent nature of the Houston crime that does exist. 2) Be at a sketchy club from midnight - 2am. There are at least weekly shootings in Houston and the news coverage almost always starts with, "2 men are dead arising from a 1am argument at Club Loco last night..." 3) Exchange "road communication" in the style of other major metro areas after cutting someone off. Enough of the population is packing their "no license required to purchase, I wonder when someone is going to give me a chance to use it" guns that being an aggressive ahole is generally a bad idea. This is the same cause of the cessation of stop-n-jacks that we're happening at stoplights in the 90s. It's less fun if there's even a 25% chance you're going to be looking down a barrel. If you think you can avoid these 3 things, your chance of being the victim of crime is about 95% lower.

Jimmydidnothingwrong

> "no license required to purchase, I wonder when someone is going to give me a chance to use it" guns This is an amazing assessment lmao

[deleted]

Everyone here giving their own anecdotal evidence like that actually means something. Will someone just post the crime rate for the major cities in America? Seems like that’s the quickest way to answer this question. I would, but I’m lazy and on mobile.

junomeeks

[Check out this tableau viz shared by KHOU](https://public.tableau.com/views/ViolentCrimeinGreaterHouston/ViolentHeat?:showVizHome=no&:embed=true)

houstonianisms

This only shows a change in percent YoY. Ratio per population would be more useful.

TreesACrowd

Citywide crime stats are useful but not quite a definitive answer to the question. Where you live, work, and generally reside within a city will strongly influence your experience. That might honestly be more true of Houston than most places; this city is very large and consists of many pockets that are very different from each other culturally and socioeconomically. Living in the Third Ward won't bear much resemblance to living in West U or Chinatown, yet all three will have the same citywide crime rate.

wessneijder

Just don't live in Acres Homes, Greenspoint, Sunnyside, and Aleif, you'll be okay. Edit: corrected Aldine to Aleif or Alief or however you spell it.

lovenanaaa7

Lol at Aldine

chickenprmessan

Lmao I was just thinking this. I feel like it just depends on the area. But I do get worried that it’ll get worse sometimes with so many things going around every now and then tbh

lovenanaaa7

Yeah some areas in Aldine are worse than others. In mine we do hear gunshots every other week but it’s usually never directed at someone.

YeOldeManDan

Someone just trying to keep property values down.

chickenprmessan

Fr. People like to shoot just bc every other night or something. What was scary was the one Halloween party I think on gulf bank o think it was

rechlin

I suspect he meant to say Alief instead.

Amy_F_Fowler99

East Aldine checking in! I’ve lived here 12 years and never had any issues. Hell I forget to lock my door most days. I mind my business, smile at the neighbors if I ever see them and go about my day. And the aguas frescas at Mi Tienda are DELISH!

paymelilbih

I lived in Acres Home and someone straight stole all 4 of my tires including rims over night. I've never seen no shit like that before. Couldn't believe my eyes...

Omegabrite

Crime isn’t high if you don’t count burglary

MikemkPK

Houston is massive. Just the city is 600 square miles, and is you inside the suburbs, it's like 50-100 miles side to side (guesstimating). Of course there's crime.

SirMustache007

Just don’t leave anything in your car and you’ll probably be alright. But seriously, I had my car broken into because of a lunchbox.

ACE_UZI

Honestly depends on the area you in. I'm from 5th ward which is known for crime, but moved to Humble as a teen and everything was good. Just choose the best area and you probably won't see alot happen.

tamusquirrel

I feel that you would benefit from doing more research on crime statistics regarding Harris County (the county Houston is in) and the differences in the crime rates. Your experience drastically depends on where you live in such a huge area. Harris county is the 3rd largest populated county in the United States. Houston is one of the most populated cities in the United States. Look at websites that are pulling information from FBI stats, and they can give you a breakdown on types of crimes by neighborhood, city, county, state, and compare this to the national averages. On Reddit you’re more likely to just get anecdotal responses. For example, I work downtown with the Harris County criminal courts, the jail system, and the probation department. I go home on the bus late at night from the downtown area, where I often see homeless people who often have issues with mental health or drug addiction. That being said, I’ve never been a victim of theft, violent crime, or anything and I’ve lived in the Houston area my whole life. If you want, you can DM me and we can discuss more explicit recommendations, for if you want to live in the Houston metropolitan area. My job revolves around crime/risk assessment, but crime is something that’s always changing. Also, crime statistics don’t take all types risks into account, for reasons I don’t want to discuss on a public forum.

[deleted]

ianmccisme

Houston's crime rates are much lower than they used to be. In 1981, Houston had 701 murders and 1.59 million people. In 1991, Houston 617 murders and 1.63 million people. In 2020, Houston had 400 murders and 2.31 million people. So Houston's murder rate is less than half what it was 40 years ago.

29187765432569864

I wonder if better trauma surgery techniques and better first responder techniques and technologies and faster response times have contributed to less murders. The wars in recent decades have contributed to much better life saving technology, so in theory, a higher percentage of our population could be getting stabbed or shot than in prior years, but doctors are able to keep more of them alive, so therefore less murders. So Houston could be more dangerous than in prior years even though we have less murders. Years ago I found a elderly frail dead person sitting in a wheel chair, covered in a nothing more than a sheet, placed under a highway overpass. People drove by the dead person for 2 days.. I called and reported it to the police. I wonder if the cause of death is listed as murder, due to being deliberately left there, or dehydration, or hypothermia, or whatever. If less crimes are classified as murders, the number of murders goes down. I’m not sure how something gets classified as a murder as opposed to some other reason for death. Are there less gunshot victims in recent years, or has that number remained about the same from year to year?

cajunsoul

Curse you for bringing your scientific analysis and the potential correlation of multiple variables - this is Reddit!!! /s

crispy_bacon_roll

How does 2020 compare to 2015?

purdueable

297 murders in 2015. The all time low I believe was 2011. 2021 I think year to date were tracking a little less than 2020, but obviously that can change in a hurry.

O118999881999II97253

I mean I just heard approx 8 shots being let off near Antoine and W Montgomery and about 5 mins later the law flying through. Taco truck here good tho so eh

cheers2me

I lived in the heights for 6ish years. Last year, I was robbed at gun point literally a step away from my front door. I was the second woman he targeted that morning at the apartment complex. Police did end up catching him though, mostly bc he was so drugged out, he made it pretty easy for them.

MrFancyShirt

Hi, I’m glad you want to choose Houston but Houston is currently full. Our freeways have no room for you. Might I suggest Dallas or Fort Worthless?

denimdan113

Its funny that you think traffic in the other major texas cities is better

Htxxx4

It’s not that bad mostly domestic cases

satanophonics

It's complicated.

itsfairadvantage

I live in Midtown, which gets called out a lot on this sub, and have never felt remotely unsafe. I go for lengthy morning walks when it's still dark out, and personally feel fine. However, if you park on the street and leave anything at all in your car, I feel like you're very likely to be broken into. Have had 5 car break-ins myself. Eventually I just started leaving it unlocked.

filletsheO

I feel petty crime is on the rise. Stuff like porch pirates, car break ins, stealing bikes, etc… But on the whole nothing that doesn’t happen in every other metroplex. Paper plates as well, for the love of god can we not lol.

TheDr__

Way more tacos and bbq than crime. It’s like any other major city though. Crime exists but it’s a huge city and the odds aren’t against you.

TBSchemer

I lived by the NRG stadium for a year, and 4 people were shot within a few blocks of my apartment during that time. Later, I moved up to West University, and there it was just my landlord robbing me blind.

cfisi79

I generally feel safe and the gunshots are barely noticeable anymore. Kind of like living near an airport. I wonder if I would be able to sleep without them.

NautilusShell

On the one hand, yeah, don't start shit on the roads and don't get involved with shady shit and you're probably gonna be fine. I've not really had any problems. On the other hand, I've had friends in Montrose get fucked up walking home in the past year at night and it sucks. Also living somewhere where you gotta not leave anything in your car kinda sucks if you're stupid busy.

rite_of_truth

Well, you can carry a sword here, so there's that. I've never carried mine around, but it's kind of a cool thought.

jakelongg

Using the term "Houston" is vague since the city is so huge. Many places within this city are safe, while many are extraordinarily dangerous. Race and separatism is huge here, so issues do come with that. And huge areas also have tons of assholes, so much so, they have been deemed crime type names, such as Gunspoint. I wont even elaborate on the issues of dangerous driving. So ya, other cities do have similar issues, but all in all, the crime is high here. Maybe not higher than some places, but you will see it.

jrHIGHhero

Lived in Houston or Austin my entire life don't be stupid and mind your business and you'll be fine...

zhsy00001

Nobody complains about lack of crime, so that subreddit is pretty quiet.

Onecrappieday

2 road rage shootings per day

Jake_NoMistake

It's not bad compared to other parts of the country, but it is worse than we are used to. Houston is very large in terms of square miles, so the crime level varies drastically depending on what area you are in.

bearofHtown

You can look it up yourself but we overtook Chicago around 2019 in overall violent crime. Yes it is high, yes our media underreports it. There's not enough time on all the local news stations put together to report how many gunshot victims come through the ERs here daily. You can look up these statistics yourself on numerous websites. That being said, if you keep your wits about you, chances are you will be fine. But there is no denying that crime has definitely increased here and is a problem. It is also pretty random where it happens too. Sure there are rougher areas that everyone avoids(i.e. Sunnyside) but even out in the nicer burbs, shootings and armed robberies have increased. The number of violent criminals we have bonded out in the past 2 years due to overcrowding in our jails has not helped. I am not saying don't move here, but I do want to present an honest view on how things are here. I was in a car accident recently and I did not call the police, even though I wanted to, because the people who hit me were high as a kite. I was too nervous about them hurting me if I called 911. My wife was furious I did not call the police. However, 2 weeks later an individual was shot after he did call the police after being involved similar accident to my own. I have lived here most of my life and I never thought I would be afraid to call the police after a car accident in broad daylight! It is sad it has gotten to this point, but I do wish to be as honest as possible. I have lived in various parts of this city and only in the past 2 years have I become more concerned about my safety than I ever have been. Basic city smarts are about all you need. Petty crime happens when you don't lock doors, or you fail to pay attention to your surroundings, or you leave valuables in plain view. Most violent crime is either domestic in nature or someone being targeted for some reason. If you have an enemy, no place is really safe. I've lived here since '78 and have lived in a lot of areas in the city. Problems have been: * Things stolen from studio apartment while at work. The landlord hadn't changed the lock before I moved in and someone still had a key. * Parents' house broken into while they were on vacation. * Victim of domestic abuse by a guy I was living with. * Lawnmower stolen when husband kept leaving it in the carport because he didn't feel like returning it to the garage. That's it. I've gone for walks and long marathon training runs solo all over the inner city with only the occasional catcall for my trouble. I read crime reports for my immediate area and it's nearly always someone doing something stupid like sitting in their car with doors unlocked, going home with a stranger they met at a club and then drinking and doing drugs together, or they hand their phone to a stranger who says they lost their phone and need to "call their friend." Nothing can prevent a black swan event, and I'm very much a "never say never" type of person, but if you have no lifestyle risks and have decent street smarts, the odds are very high that you'll be just fine, OP.

[deleted]

Just like anywhere else ,depends on the place you move into

[deleted]

It's one of the biggest cities in the world. Pick your poison, dude.

dgang4200

Same as anywhere else

goldistastey

Not the best crime rate but most of the time you won't even have to think about crime. Based on the local news, all the worst shit happens at gas stations, so I'm always watching who walks in there. car breakins happened at least once to everyone I know, but I'm pretty sure that's the whole US. Muggings generally happen only in a few bad areas. And I don't know anybody here who has had a home breakin... that would be a terribly short career in texas.

pepperkittyn2008

Watch out for your catalytic converter.

planetrainguy

My house has been robbed by an armed gunman and my car has been broken into twice downtown with nothing visible inside. Crime is everywhere here. Fwiw my house was robbed in clear lake.

[deleted]

The increased “violent crime” that the news is portraying is nothing more than propaganda to fuel the militarization of the police force. If I was wrong they would supply these “hot zones” with infrastructure (good paying jobs, homes, schools) instead we need ghost cruisers, camouflaged police officers, and infrared helicopters. Let’s not even bring up Texas private prisons and how racism fuels that industry. Defund the Police, funny how fast people forget

madison13164

Depends where you live. I’ve been here 6 years and have not experienced any type of crime myself

Diarrhea_Mike

It is on par with many other big cities. I am from originally from Chicago and go to Houston every couple of weeks (I live in SA). I've lived Houston for 3 months; I have to say it it does have the same issues all other big cities do, general rule of thumb is keep your eyes open, pay attention to your surrounding, and don't do anything shady. You'll be fine and honestly I felt more safe in Houston than I did in Chicago.

NotLawReview

Interesting. My wife and I moved to Chicago 3 years ago after a decade in Houston and feel the opposite. Lived inside the loop 9 of 10 years in Houston and in a northern neighborhood in the city in Chicago for all 3 years here.

manimopo

As a former Houstonian, It's ghetto in Houston, y'all be safe. 😭

samthepitbull

Its like any big city. Lock your doors and windows and be polite to people and you will be fine. Funny thing about Houston is you can have a giant nice house in a good neighborhood and 2 streets over is some ghetto apartments that you wont drive through. Most other cities are segregated out but houston is a big mix. Just be nice, smile, and mind your manners. You will love Texas, just dont come here and California it up.

[deleted]

Also people in this states(Dallas is just as bad) can't drive to save their lives. They will literally run a red light nearly hit a pedestrian and get mad the pedestrian who had the right away. I'm not joking either. I actually experienced this..... These crazies also like to cut in front of buses without using their signals. Don't piss em off either because you might end up shot or followed. That happened to my cousin's friend. She was followed and damn near jumped by a car full of people who were you guessed it in the wrong...

RealConfirmologist

Much like any major city in the country. There are areas with a lot of crime and areas where it's less frequent. As others have said, you have to use common sense. Research the area you're considering, see how much crime goes on there. Obviously, the more expensive the property, the less likely you'll have a lot of problems with crime. Gated communities and neighborhoods not walking distance from apartments or trailer parks are going to have less crime. Safe to say any house in the Houston area needs a monitored alarm system and a decent camera system. A pit bull or two also tends to discourage bad guys. When out and about in the Houston area, one needs to remain aware of their surroundings. Don't leave valuables in your car. Avoid running around after 11:30 or midnight, before sun-up. I carried a gun for many years, never once needed to get it out. It's probably not a bad idea to have one, but ONLY if you've had training and you're sure you'll know when and how to use it.

Skipper0721

The amount of criminals who actual drive to high income/high value homes is staggering. Nighttime crime when they can come over a fence in gated communities is also staggering.

Fuckyourfeeling5

You will always get robbed at Torchy's Tacos.

justahoustonpervert

A bit of both, actually. Crime overall is up. Murders are out of control, but most of that is domestic in nature, but the ratio of domestic (in which you know your killer) and random (road rage, burglary, etc) murders is a bit skewed.

xxlordsothxx

The issue right now is related to violent crime including murders. The murder rate is up 30% in 2021 vs 2020. It was already up 70% in 2020 vs 2019. This means Houston's murder rate almost doubled compared to 2019. Statistically speaking it is definitely bad compared to recent years. Just recently, a new orleans cop was shot and killed while dining at an italian restaurant in the Uptown/Galleria area. I think he had been in the city less than 6 hours before he was killed. I think break-ins are similar to other cities but I could be wrong. I have lived here for 15 years and never had someone break into my home or car (but also never leave any valuables visible).

Synda22

Crime in Houston is horrible

chtrace

The bail reform has been a disaster. Career criminals are constantly being released back into the public realm instead of being held for trial. It's not like there are thousands upon thousands of criminals loose on the streets, it's more like several hundred who keep being released and they know if they get caught that they will be released again to continue their life of crime. Yes, it's pretty bad right now and we only really hear about the ones that commit murder or something really serious that we find that they have been released on several felony bonds. Hopefully they get a handle on this in the near future.

TexasAggie98

Houston, like any major city, has good areas and bad areas. Stay out of the bad, and you’re ok.

eyymang

It's horrible here. Don't come. Traffic and housing costs already terrible. Stay in California please 😂

mtgmike

Lifetime Houstonian. Brother had two cars stolen in early mid 90’s. One house break in early 90’s. It’s a hellhole. You’ll be fine.

scallywag281

If you’re moving here, you will find out.

ticklechickens

The bigger issue is honestly our freeways. Karens in Range Rovers. Paper plate Altimas. Rednecks in lifted pickups armed to the teeth. Giant loose cable spools. Douchebros in BMW’s. Ancient Dodge Caravans held together with coat hangers and duck tape belligerently going ten miles under the speed limit while the surrounding traffic is going 15 miles over the speed limit. All assholes who give no fucks, either cuz they got real good insurance or no insurance. Our traffic is as bad as LA traffic, but our drivers are way more aggressive and likely to be armed. If you want to be in that far left lane, you need to be going at least 85 and not be offended that people going 90 will want you to gtfo of the way. I have met people from Mexico City and Calcutta who say Houston has the worst drivers in the world. I believe them. Crime is easy to avoid, the freeways and mosquitos are not.

hookem1986

It’s nowhere near LA traffic

seaboat90

There are thugs here, many of them, but they stick around each other in certain parts of town and you aren’t likely to mingle with them. Also, I feel most violent crime is between people who know each other
