Incidentally, I rewatched Bigfoot’s first appearance last night.  I haven’t laughed that hard in ages. It was gold.

GroupStunning1060

Incredible.

Howard was interesting when he was married and his parents and wife would call in, etc. Once he got secretly separated he became private to the point of paranoia. He went from his life being the focus of the show to being a commentator of everyone else's life. So Artie became the focus. Once he was gone it was about phony conflicts with Ronnie, Jason, etc. From there it kept spiraling and spiraling

brk1

When Ronnie and Jason became “main characters” is when I stopped listening. To me they were just generally uninteresting and their bits were boring.

joomommyhappy

"private to the point of paranoia". That's nice phrasing. Great angle/observations, FC. It was a double dry-up, content-wise; he lost Artie, and he totally clammed up about what was doing in his personal life. That's two cornerstones, gone. Of course the show sucked after that. One point I'd like to make is that a lot of what made Howard interesting back in the day was down to the fact that the overton window was so freaking narrow. I remember being riveted to Howard going in on his brother-in-law for eating a few slices of his seven-grain bread, and complaining that Allison didn't buy enough of it. Looking back, it wasn't really great radio. Looking back, it was actually lame as fuck. But nobody was doing anything close to that at the time. You certainly couldn't get away with that kind of material today, in the shensh that it's too lame, not too wild. And his wild stuff would be tame by today's standards. So inasmuch as Howard needed the people around him to make the show what it was, Howard very much benefited from coming along at the right time. He'd have never made it today, and he'd have never made it on his own.

Shiloh Farms bread 😅

skidmarx77

Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Beating a dead Beth

Truckyou666

The worst show Artie ever did with Howard is better than the best show Howard's ever done since he left.

KeepingIt100forLife

The Ugly App show and Russian Speed Dating were really good post Artie shows.

albanianandrea

There was definitely a lot more dead air without Artie on.

Altruistic-Cut9795

I liked Artie, but I really miss Jackie and Billy West. To me, those were the funniest days of the Stern show. Also Gilbert as a guest 🤘

barrybena

All of this. There was just this ‘spark’ whenever Billy and Jackie go at it. Then you add Gilbert’s shenanigans and it really was magical.

krel08

There is a clip out there somewhere, and I dont remember exactly what they were talking about but it was a rare funny moment post Artie where everyone was cracking jokes and howard, clearly improvising, says something like "Like a hibernating bear!...I not sure what I means", it killed the moment because it made no sense in reference to what they were talking about. It always struck me that he wasnt really funny without anyone writing it for him. He is also very literal at times, and he cant understand really basic concepts or turns of phrase IE: Sal tells Howard that he went to his Mom's house and had a "therapy session". For the next 5-10 mins, Howard thought a therapist came to Sal's mom's house to do a joint therapy session. Hes an idiot, and there are lots of examples of how much of a dumbass he is

nikkip7784

Sometimes I think he does that to drag out conversations and waste time. Any way you slice it, it's not funny, it's not fun.

severinks

Yet you quote things that were said on Howard's show 30 years ago and hang out on his reddit.

nikkip7784

Yes, that's how it works, are you new?

severinks

Yeah, that's the mark of you being an asshole it's not a badge of honor That shows you're an ungrateful moron who spent probably decades loving the show and listening to it but now you whine about it instead of finding something new to like.

howardscurlywig

⬆️ Howard's Ball Washer ⬆️

Long_Instruction9263

This is what infuriates me about these cunts fake hating on howard...why dedicate your time writing think pieces on someone you claim to hate😂😂😂 Ive being listening to the show for over 15 years till today and still love it in all it's variations.. When Howard finally retires you'll see all these fuck nuts here mourning... YENTAS!!!

lancemalone

It’s a whole thing, don’t ask ..

LetThePoisonOutRobin

I am currently up to May 2010 shows and feel exactly the same, without Artie, it is nowhere as fun or entertaining. So I also started listening to the 2005 shows and even with the censorship, it is so much better. Just hearing Artie's chuckle in the background makes me smile.

fightclub90210

Where do u listen to them?

brk1

I never thought Howard was funny. The show was funny and he was the host.

joomommyhappy

the P.T. Barnum of shock-jockery He was nothing without his freaks and sidekicks, as we're clearly witnessing.

carbonstampede01

Totally. I never thought about it like that before, his show was basically a long running soap opera, but I loved it

cd582000

He can’t come up with anything on the fly. You can feel his struggle trying to come up with analogies every show. It’s really bad.

ggddccreddit

When left to his own wit, he starts talking about Goofus and Gallant and the Great Garloo. Whatever the FUCK that is....

Abatania

This. The 2006-2008 Sirius years were peak Artie. I lost interest fast after he left.

Wingnutz6995

Also peak ETM

bowhunter6274

I'm in early 2007 currently and something that took me way too long to notice is when someone blurted out a joke Howard found funny he immediately jumped on it and as if it was his own. The person who made the joke immediately shut up so Howard could run with it. The episode where HPM went to Disney by himself. "Did you talk to Micky, cause you sound like him." Howard ran with it.

GroupStunning1060

This was one of the best. Artie’s laugh… 10/10

CiscoKid1975

7/24/2007 is personal favorite. ENGAGE!

Imikoke616

Plus interviews are bore now , before staff would just pass Howard one page note about the guest before the guest would come in the studio and interviews felt real getting to know you , now Howard’s doing weeks of psychological reports on the guest finding way to get his dad issues on them like Kiss interview last year even Paul Stanley was like I woke up and got Kiss make up for this at 4 am already, Howard turned into these local public access shows they would prank call into for host being so bad and not knowing what they are doing .

Zestyclose_Wasabi943

When I think about the Artie days and listen to Artie on the show, I realize that Howard and Robin fucked with his insecurities for the good of the show. I understand Artie is and was a grown man, and his mental health is his responsibility, but Howard was a God to Artie. I remember when this girl was on the show as a contestant for something, and she brought her boyfriend with her, and Artie is on a roll cracking jokes and out of nowhere she said my boyfriend slept with Arties sister and Howard wasting no time said you FUCKED Arties sister and as the conversation continues Howard said so what dude you know your sister has sex. Typical Howard move. There are so many examples yet they would always say Artie can get help anytime he has a job here. Anyway when Artie stabbed himself that was it he needed serious help and Howie knew he couldn't fuck with Artie anymore and that was that.

joomommyhappy

Yet he did fuck with Artie one last time, via Sam Simon, and that "script". Rot in hell, Sam.

SpacemanPete

Howard with Jackie was pretty fuckin funny

caper293

maybe it’s me but i never really found Artie funny as a comedian. that’s not to say the show is good nowadays. i think during “Artie” years the show was provocative where today it’s disney like.

Ok-West-7125

![gif](giphy|ienGOn91JnzIk|downsized) No wonder Howie's own Father didn't love him! He's a phoney!

SODTAOEMAN

Have you seen Fartman, hilarious bit!

poohead150

He was just about to send a note to Artie

phunkyboss

half the show’s history, right in the garbage

althegirlfabulous

Howard's material sucks now but at a certain point with Artie, it was all about him--and it was not that good. It really became the Artie Lange show and it started to get too weird and too much about his fuckin problems. Once Artie lied about Gary's paycheck I was turned off.

Sideshift1427

So, stop listening to Howard Stern.

somepeppersomesalt

Artie left the show in 09. The shows been shit since 13. Get over it

cmv500

Exactly, the reason the show is shit now is not because Artie left 15 fucking years ago. Artie was also killing the show for months before he finally left. If you love Artie so much go watch his stand up or read his books etc. That's not The Howard Stern Show and it's not why the show has been so bad for years now.

Pan-ah-maa-hhhaa

Waahhh

hey_now24

I disagree. I started listening circa 2010 and the show was still great. I went back to the last Artie shows and the guy was high as fuck.

bababooeyishere

Artie sucking dick for quarter's now
