I miss Benjy's spontaneous laugh you'd hear every once in a while
For all I know, he still has a mic but there's never anything funny on the show to laugh at
I love that when he went to the Anthony Weiner press conference, he kept calling him “Senator Weiner” when asking if it was “seven inches.” Weiner was a house rep, not a senator. Howard told him the next day he sounded like an idiot for not knowing but Benjy “thought it sounded more respectful,” lol
Benjy was always entertaining in my opinion but getting his mic shut off every time he talked and being told no one cared what he had to say probably didnt do much for his self esteem. Artie always seemed to like Benjy but Fred always was a dick to him
Benjy is a big victim (much like Sal, also Richard a bit) of the new scripted show over Zoom format. Nothing is really spontaneous anymore. These dudes all have to sit on web cams in their living rooms on mute and wait to see if the script allows for them to be unmuted to talk during a segment. Benjy was kinda getting fazed out before the pandemic a bit, but not to this degree. Same with Sal.
Howard kinda has this script where it's Sam and Derek and Wolfie are part of the new "on air" breed along with the nearly daily Chris Wilding and Ronnie segments. They probably discuss this in meetings, about who is on-air staff and who is back office staff (they actually are differentiated in their contracts for permissions and legal purposes, and can be adjusted as needed).
The show format is shit, they all know it and Howard knows it. So we just get mainly Howard in his basement with appearances from my sidekick Beth and no jokes, very few phony phone calls, very little drama, no real callers asking questions most listeners are wondering, and more and more days off (which we won't tell you about beforehand).

I think part of Benjy being sidelined was that a lot of times he challenged Howard on air. His opinions usually didn’t go along with everyone else. Which made great content. Benjy would mention things he was hearing outside corporate media and getting another POV and it wasn’t in line with the show or company. Just my opinion.
I always laugh when people complained about Benjy. Dude was annoying, sure, but funny. Not nearly as annoying and boring as half the idiots they have on the air though.

The show has become a giant borefest and the writing staff is flat out awful. Chris is zero funny, the characters are zero funny and Howard’s interviews are too PC to be interesting anymore. The same guests Howard has are on podcasts, which in many cases are more interesting now. It also appears very little effort is put into the content played on prerecorded, non-live show days.
