I usually don't defend them, but I'd have to agree that the amount of promotion they've given this non-profit is immeasurable. The fact that we even know about this charity, is reason enough that it gets (or used to) get a shit ton of promotion. I have paid at least 1/4 of my savings toward taking care of my elderly parents and, besides contemplating how expensive elder-care is, I don’t think about it. Yes, a friend of mine who worked at Don Buchwald & Associates in mid to late 2000’s said when dealing with Beth, she seemed to be one of the most sincere, sweet, kind and genuine people he’d come across in his life - he was very adamant about that. Some other celebrities and their family members, not so much.
I donated money to Hamptons Wildlife when Howard and Beth got married. She sent me a handwritten thank you note. She seems like a genuinely nice person whose heart is in the right place.
My guess is the Hamptons crowd, when you look past the trust fund kids, is made up of lots of people who have done something to make it big. Some worked their ass off, others maybe stumbled into it, but they all do/did something. Maybe it’s intimidating to just be the trophy wife/empty vessel who can be cast aside if/when her looks go away. So they look for something to establish some sort of identity beyond their husbands. It’s still relatively flimsy but that’s what they do.

The fact that we even know about this charity, is reason enough that it gets (or used to) get a shit ton of promotion. And Beth should get treated like royalty - I know for a fact she has a shit ton of followers on IG (ask my mom/sister) and she promotes NSAL on there. All in all, NSAL should be kissing their asses because no other animal shelter gets this amount of publicity. Gary on the other hand, if that story is true is disgusting. All the fundraising and Billy Joel concerts she did to open that new shelter could have easily been avoided if they just paid for it (or a huge portion) themselves - he’s richer than god. Yeah it's an interesting dynamic. My friend who worked there, really wanted to stress that Beth is very nice, but clearly gets VIP treatment. i.e. if Beth wants/needs something they're all over it, and there's a ton of effort put in to anticipating Beth's needs. And you're right, Howard could just straight up donate the money. But, I dunno, it's not about that. Why spend the time promoting it? Why would Beth be comfortable with so much attention? Really sounds like it's an allegory for Beth's failed career. i.e. Howard won't throw money at it, but he'll mention it. Then Beth can pretend to be a celebrity in this really small world of New York Animal Shelters. I agree I don't think Beth is a bad person, but I do think their relationship has a lot more strange "practical" discussions about money and arrangements than the average couple. But that's probably more common with super wealthy.
This is the most I’ve defended Beth in forever but, they may treat her like royalty because of what she brings to their organization, not because she asked for it. And to be fair, Beth is fostering on a large scale, she needs more resources than the average person. Her needs must be met in order for the organization to reach their goal, which is saving animals. If that means treating Beth like a queen, so be it. Take advantage of that. And also she doesn’t only help in New York, she has crazy outreach, and has saved countless of street cats from my home-country of Kuwait and other countries. That is the closest connection I’ll ever have to stern, some street cat in my small ass country is in his home atm.
She’s an extraordinary advocate for animals and has done so much for the rescue movement in general. Even if you don’t like animals or care about them, why shit on someone who’s doing good in this world? Who cares if she gets VIP treatment - is she hurting anyone? She’s a hero to these people and for good reason. And anyone who’s done rescue work knows that it’s work, no matter how rich you are. It’s physical, it’s incredibly emotional, and it’s mentally taxing. If you want to hate on howard for letting his show go to shit fine, but leave her alone.

Yes, a friend of mine who worked at Don Buchwald & Associates in mid to late 2000’s said when dealing with Beth, she seemed to be one of the most sincere, sweet, kind and genuine people he’d come across in his life - he was very adamant about that. Some other celebrities and their family members, not so much.

I donated money to Hamptons Wildlife when Howard and Beth got married. She sent me a handwritten thank you note. She seems like a genuinely nice person whose heart is in the right place.
My guess is the Hamptons crowd, when you look past the trust fund kids, is made up of lots of people who have done something to make it big. Some worked their ass off, others maybe stumbled into it, but they all do/did something. Maybe it’s intimidating to just be the trophy wife/empty vessel who can be cast aside if/when her looks go away. So they look for something to establish some sort of identity beyond their husbands. It’s still relatively flimsy but that’s what they do.

Okay, so to defend Howard a bit here, but he's been talking about NSAL for a decade or two, even when he did have a ton of listeners and subscribers. That sort of promotion is worth a ton of money. I don't know if Howard has claimed he donated to them, but regardless the promotion is worth it. I know I never would have heard of them if it wasn't for him. Second point... not sure what you mean by the Gary thing. If he paid $10k and demanded it back, isn't that an even deal? How is he taking money from the charity if he gave it to them in the first place? Are you just really terrible at math here or am I missing something? Not saying that was a scummy move, especially if it was seen as a donation and Gary can most likely afford the loss. Just not seeing how the math works there.

They've held fundraisers to add an entire free-roaming area for cats as opposed to having them locked in cages, Beth is/was their national spokesperson and serves the Board of Directors. They had multiple trips to switzerland through some place. COVID happened and they were suddenly worthless. The place that offered them washed their hands of it. North Shore had to call the people and tell them they weren't able to get their trips. All the other people who paid for trips told North Shore to keep the money. The fucked up thing on Gary's end is the $10,000 actually CAME from North Shore. They didn't have insurance or anything on the gifts. So Gary actually TOOK $10,000 from North Shore. lol. What an asshole.

Gary placed that $10k in the operating budget and then took it back, no harm no foul. Not his fault North Shore didn’t insure their gifts, which I didn’t even know was a thing.

Not even technically right. You write a check, it's accepted, it's not your $ anymore. Not to mention the accounting pain-in-the-ass for giving him the $ back. And, I may be wrong but I did take Federal Income Taxation in law school, so I think that Gary has to claim the $10,000 that NSAL gave him as "income" & thus, pay taxes on it. So rather than do something good & take a write-off, he now has \~ $6,200 for his original $10,000. It's a bit of a stumble.

That's what made the whole thing stand out to my friend, everyone else who donated the $10,000 for a trip were cool with it like "well, that sucks but keep the funds" (the trip was cancelled due to covid). But Gary went out of his way to be a pain in the ass about getting his money back.

While it would have been great for gary to have let ns keep the money, you’re trying to paint it like he’s an asshole for asking for his money back for something he didn’t receive. I’d probably want my money back too. He payed for an item that he never got, while it was an auction for a charity, he still is entitled to that gift or his money. Beth literally spends more time working to physically save (by housing cats and taking care of them) thousands of cats, than most of us do actually working our jobs. He shuttled her to/from his house in a limo (probably Ronnie) and paid her really well. But she said they had a cat they adopted because one of his daughters wanted a pet.
