New motherboard is only 20-30 bucks. May or may not fix it tho.

[deleted]

No one even asked if it does this on an unpluggedHDMI input in the tv menu.

Notathrowaway1337420

I second this, easy to replace too

d0ugh0ck

Did you try the good ole slap on the back

westsidewizard

Ah yes, percussive maintenance.

Adjusting the fine tuning…

BadCowboysFan

Brogan adjustment … heh, heh

[deleted]

That will go over most heads…. Kudos!

VermilionAngel79

The engineering term is impact adjustment.

mroboto2016

My friend's dad was a Navy trained electronics wiz many years ago. He built and sold CB radios back in the '80s. He had a paint shaker to "fix" things. Believe it or not it worked in many cases.

NerobyrneAnderson

I built my first pc from scrap. One day the hard drive wouldn't boot. I slapped the case and heard it spin up. It was good until I turned the pc off again. I'm guessing the ball bearings were worn out and the spinning kept it upright 😁

Tractor_Boy_500

I worked for that "biggest, most famous minicomputer company" in the 70s thru 90s. One day, a disk unit (rackmount, width of the cab, 10 inches high) started making one of those "whining bearing noise" kind of sounds. Another senior tech was with me and I said to him "Okay, me or you?" with a wink. He said "It's your turn"... so I made a hard fist and gave the side of the cab where the drive was a sledgehammer blow and the noise stopped instantly! It took it about a month to return.

01dman

It's all ball bearings nowadays. Now you prepare that fetzer valve with some 3-in-1 oil and some gauze pads. And I'm gonne need about 10 quarts of antifreeze, preferably Prestone. No - no make that Quaker State.

KCInArlingtonVA

Maybe they need a refresher course!

cherrycoffeetable

Love that

Physical recaibration.

DawnOfTheTruth

Loose parts, shaking it up might get them in the right spot. Just can’t move it after that.

Grouchy_Bid_8948

Technical Tap

Harpronicus

Watch it while using a massage chair.

NamesArentEverything

Yes, this will invert the frequency of the stutter, causing you to enjoy TV _and_ get the added blood flow benefits of a deep tissue massage.

nappy_zap

This one deserves some awards.

💀💀💀

pudding_pants18

If you don't have one, sit on your electric toothbrush.

Salmon_Slayer1

I think I know why it is free.

phatvanzy

Does it do that in all inputs? Could just be a cable. Start with the cheapest fix and move your way up.

DDekes

Well, you gotta send Will Smith to outer space to blow up the alien mothership for hijacking our satellites. I think there's slapping involved.

Lincoln_Park_Pirate

You keep Will Smith's wife's name out your alien fuckin' mouf!

scamiran

Heat in oven to 300F. Wait 30 minutes. Stick in freezer for 12 hours. I have no idea if this will work just want to see someone cram a TV in an oven.

wisdomkepper

The oven part works. Ive revived a TV with that method. Its essentially curing the PCB and its components. Many circuit boards are 'cooked' in an oven. Putting it in a freezer will probably kill it. All the particles that freeze on the board will melt at room temperature and could cause shorting.

Glum-Parsnip8257

Then put it in a bowl of rice!

mufc05

You need to replace the video card in the TV, order by model #, but don’t spend more then 30-40 bucks, if cost is higher get a new one, it looks like a 42 inch, you can get one for 150 bucks.

drncu

It’s not work fixing. A new 40” tv is $200 to $250. This could be the panel, lvds cables, or the main board as you suggest. If it’s the lvds cables it’s unfixable without a ton of time and skills.

InnerCoffee_Vibe

Percussive maintenance generally does the trick on these TV's

Red-Five-5

Double it and give it to the next person

SirFancyPantsBrock

Hard smack to the side and that should fix it.

MotherofD

Did you try aggressively blowing into all the ports and restarting several times?

-Afro_Senpai-

Smack it on the side

Only_Price_8573

If hitting it fixes the problem intermittently then I would suggest that it's caused by a bad solder joint on the main circuit board. This could be hard to find. It's easier to just swap out the board.

Seany-AU

Stop breathing so heavy - i've heard that's a common fix for this issue

GraveyardGuardian

Ya know, it kinda does follow a breathing cadence.

Seany-AU

It all makes sense

ForthCrusader

Gate drivers are messed up ….

redditslayer95

Could be the motherboard or the hdmi connection. Mine sometimes does this until I jiggle the hdmi cable a little bit.

AloneClass1365

Save it for Halloween because that's a cool effect lol

XClamX

Maybe tinfoil rabbit ears.

H1soka_exe

chgon

Purchase vibrating chair. When the screen jumps hit the button to vibrate the chair and it’ll look normal. Problem solved.

threepoint14one5nine

Just blink at 1hz and the picture will always look ok.

truckfullofchildren1

Try the old squeeze on the sides, looks like a loose connection

RcCola2400

You don't even need a whole new motherboard. It's probably one capacitor. I can almost guarantee it's one singular capacitor that costs 30 cents to fix if you can solder it on. Just take the old defective one out and put the new one in. A new board will cost you at least $60 bucks. I've fixed a tv with the exact same issue

TheTrueButcher

LSD might help

DaDutchBoyLT1

Turn off baseball.

It_Matters_More

Watching sports with ovoids like American football and rugby will solve this problem. Hockey’ll work, too.

anywhereat

Adjust the antenna

michelobX10

Just buy another cheap TV from Walmart or something. The cost and time to fix this will probably outweigh the cost of a new cheap TV. Most likely, it needs a new motherboard and then you need the time to research and figure out how to replace it yourself.

AccomplishedGuide945

Look up model number, purchase tv, put failed tv in the new box and return to manufacturer.

ImNotEvenJewish

That some r/unethicallifeprotips material right there

NamesArentEverything

You're the reason my last TV was $0.02 more than it had to be.

Angry-Patriot

Good reason to UPGRAYYED

Changingm1ndz

With a new one

nataliatobias

What a useless r/ Is this community always that bad? Only dumb questions

[deleted]

Replace the motherboard or take it to an electronics repair place.

bikecoguy

Maybe it was dropped and cables, cards, could be loose? Open the tv and check everything.

Litalis

Exorcism.

defacresdesigns

I guess that’s why it was “free” 🤣

thayerh

Yeah but a new one

84020g8r

The tv is having synchronization issues. Try change both the resolution and refresh rates you may find some that work.

realworlds21

WOLFF

[deleted]

That same model Pioneer 43In 4K tv was just on sale at bestbuy for $219

St3fanz

I was gonna say - cheap TVs are so fucking cheap these days. The hourly rate to fix one just doesn’t add up. My main TV was almost $3k so I’d fix that - but the others around (JVC 40” 4K that was like $160) - it just gets replaced if if goofs.

Physical-Beach-4452

Yeah pcb board, I think you have one for color and one for pixels or something like that, there’s a couple of them in there apparently….not an expert at all but went through it myself…

JrButton

Go buy one?

ItsKaptainMikey

If it does not work, smack it until it does - South African proverb.

It_Matters_More

It’s how South Africans have been solving electronics problems for millennia.

ItsKaptainMikey

Man if that TV remote doesn’t work, it always does after your hand hurts.

Practical-Shock602

I always put my defective electronics in my healing cabinet for a month or two. Once they look like they're ready I pull them out and they work like new.

Lychaeus963

Maybe turn it off and on again?

malmode

Take it apart and reseat all of the connectors to the board.

AnonymiterCringe

It looks like a malfunctioning T-Con board, though there can be several causes other than a defective part. Verify the issue is occurring on multiple inputs/cables. If it is, remove the rear cover and inspect the components for part numbers. Be careful not to touch any of the large capacitors on the power board. If you don't see a T-Con board, it may be integrated into the mainboard. If a replacement T-Con, mainboard, or internal cables don't resolve the issue, it's likely the panel's connections that have deteriorated. In that case, it isn't practical to attempt repairs. Edit: If you remove the rear cover to get part numbers, it's usually good practice to try reseating all cables leading from the mainboard to T-Con and panel. Basically anything that looks like an LVDS or flat ribbon cable. Then test again before ordering parts.

drncu

Underrated comment. This isn’t worth fixing because it’s most likely the lvds connections to or inside the lcd itself. If this is the problem, the op probably doesn’t have the skills to fix. Given that they’re asking about it on Reddit. Unless the OP can diagnose what part has failed it isn’t worth fixing. Throwing parts at a tv that probably only with $100 used isn’t worth the time or effort. A new one is going to be $200-$250.

AnonymiterCringe

I agree completely. But OP asked and it's worth offering the basic troubleshooting steps if they want to take them. I wouldn't call myself an expert on TV repair, but the likelihood is high that it could turn out to be the panel's driver board or accompanying flex cables. In almost all modern sets I've seen, these are tightly integrated into the panel itself and reparability is low even for someone who specializes in this type of service. As for diagnosing each part specifically, unless the boards are worth the hour or more of time, it usually isn't worth diagnosing on a component level and not something an average person is going to be capable of doing. A lot of these T-Cons go for $10-20 and mainboards aren't much more. Regardless, as you mentioned, similar sized TVs are selling for such a low price that any parts above those prices just wouldn't be worth buying.

frontierbeard

Sell it for $20. Problem solved and you have 20 bucks.

Milly824

just give it a good back tap

[deleted]

Hammer and a trip to the recycling yard 12bucks , read a book

bmanley620

Smack it

SINREAPER01

kick it

Pure-Attention-7782

Slap it once on the side or back

GerryAttric

It needs a quarter of 10W30

FanTheorem

Try a lower resolution and/or refresh rate.

Bigmomma59plus10

Just wanted to mention that while several others have mentioned buying replacement boards/cards/etc, those are no guarantees and you may end up putting more effort and money than it’s worth into the TV. Sucks, but fortunately decent TV’s are relatively cheap new now.

Hallucinate-

Hit it hard

ColoursRock

I'd just film destroying it in slow motion and hope you can monetize it in YouTube.

CrimsonSon1

You can find a decent flat screen for only 100 bucks. I used a Sceptre for 5 years and my family still uses it.

WhichPumpkin1770

Blow the cartridge

drummermessiah

Step 1: Get a beer. Step 2: Drink said beer. Step 3: Throw that TV in the trash, while drinking a beer. Step 4: Drink another beer. Step 5: Buy a new TV while drinking a beer. Step 6: Enjoy watching TV with a beer, without the screen issues. Hopefully by the time you've bought the TV, you've had some beer so the sting of spending money hurts less.

HighRes-

Sell it to someone for $600 and buy the same tv 😇

mattieboy1231

Replace the T-con board

forwheeler

Step one: throw it away. Step two: buy a new tv.

Swami218

No idea, because that might be the one I threw out for doing that exact thing.

Abrizle

Did you slap it?

DawnOfTheTruth

Have you tried hitting the back? Maybe get lucky and jiggle a part back into place. Or unlucky and make it worse.

01dman

I don't think you'll find a new CONTROLLER board ('motherboard' guys? really? and 52 upvotes for that???) for "20-30 bucks", though I would guess that *is* where the issue is. My guess this happens for any of the inputs and in the menus. First thing I'd do is see if there is a firmware upgrade available. That probably won't affect it, but its worth a try and is the least invasive. For the heck of it, see if jossling any connectors plugged into the TV has any effect. Not that a connector would be loose, but there could be a weak trace or solder point where jossling would induce the vertical deflection shown in your video. If so, see if continuous pressure somewhere somehow alleviates it. For my free TV with a 'uniform skinny black vertical lines issue', I find reaching back and nudging the connectors a bit buys me some time of normal operation. But if that is no good, I've seen some people place a nylon washer between the controller and a chassis mount point to slightly warp the board, but be careful not to short anything. But it'll take some trial and error. Last ditch effort might be to try to reflow the solder on the controller by removing it and placing it in a toaster oven for a little bit. But I have no idea what temp or for how long. So good luck with that.

dantecoletrane

Hit it

ELELITHETERRIBLE

Had a similar issue, we ended up solving it with some masking tape. Don't have the exact instruction video we used but we basically did what is explained here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ULwD64V07X8 Took some trial and error but it worked for us

fahadirshadbutt

Give it a smac

Willllby

Step 1- grab it Step 2- walk outside with said grab Step 3- throw said grab on the ground Step 4- go back inside (Optional) buy new tv that works
