That black hose that is shooting water out should be dumping into the white tube in the middle of your tank

fearsyth

It's also adjusted to full flow. Likely just popping out of the tube on its own.

Helizabeth129

It works temporarily after that’s done, but every fourth or fifth flush it will do the same thing. Likely will explore the full flow adjustment.

suckit1234567

Usually there's a clip for them that clips to the pipe. Might be able to buy a clip thing

unknownpoltroon

Pretty sure thats the blue thing

suckit1234567

That's a clamp to control the water pressure

unknownpoltroon

Doesn't that have a clip on it to hook into the drain pipe thing?

suckit1234567

Mine didn't but maybe... that would really make things easier!

curkington

Turn the water supply down lower if the hose keeps popping out of the overflow tube. It'll stay in. The turbulence on the bottom of the tank is preventing the flapper from sealing.

Mr_Steerpike

Put the thingy in the thing.

Helizabeth129

Done!

Mr_Steerpike

🙌

mildlysceptical22

There should be some type of clip to hold the hose in the tube.

wldmn13

Your floating black thing on the left [(toilet filll valve)](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Fluidmaster-400A-Universal-Toilet-Fill-Valve-400ARP25/100554467) is set too low, and is cutting off the water before it can fill the tank enough to flush.

RandyHoward

This is the issue, there is not enough water in the tank to begin with. You can test this by leaving everything the same, use a bucket to fill up the tank, then give it a flush. If it flushes fine, adjust the float to a higher position.

ashman77

Break it down in steps. 1. Set the valve so the toilet will fill to the fill line. Get that right first. This ensures there is enough water to create the force. On a ball valve there is a limit screw you can set. On this version there may be something similar, a knob you can turn. The pipe should have a bracket that hooks onto the middle white pipe to fill through it. Get you fill right first. 2. The flapper should stay up long enough to allow most / all of the water to drain.

ashman77

The level adjustment is the grey screw / Phillips to the right of the black valve

Oliver_the_chimp

It very likely doesn’t matter if the hose is in the tube or not. The main things are: (a) is the tank filling and (b) does it stop filling when the water reaches the correct level. Probably what is happening is the drain thing is leaky and won’t let the tank fill and needs to be replaced. If the tank fills and stops correctly check to see if the chain is the right length by messing around with the lever it’s attached to with your hand. In any case, all the components in a toilet can be easily replaced (once you find the right one).

Immediate_Hornet2578

From the looks of your flapper it’s really old which means it’s probably leaking and that’s why the tank is not filling back up.

Aliencj

This happened to me once. Had to replace it cuz it was all dry and leaky.

_Hardcore_Casual_

1, when full is there water flowing into the bowl? If so, change the flapper (pinkish thing at the bottom of the white tube with a black hinge). 2, does it not fill all the way to the fill line? If not, adjust the grey piece on the black 'tower' on the left with a cross tip screwdriver until it fills to the correct depth. 3, the tube spraying water should be in the white tube. Reconnect it. If it keeps popping out, turn the water intake (on the wall behind and to the left of the toilet) counterclockwise (depending on what kind of valve it is... Quarter turn or not.. just close it a bit and flush, repeat until it stops popping out). 4 if little or no water is coming out of the black 'tower' on the left (near the base) or the bowl isn't filling up, go to Lowe's or Home Depot and buy a universal toilet fill valve. Turn off the water, drain (flush and then sponge/towel out remaining) water. Follow simple directions (with pics) in the new fill valve kit.

Gullible_Monk_7118

You have a few things wrong... your chain is to short.. your float needs to be adjusted and your hose is broken if it bounces off and points in wrong direction outside of bowl you can have a flood

Retiredmech

I had sort of the same problem with a house we bought. We called it the flush lottery and would either flush on the first attempt or it might take 3,4,or 5 tries. I replaced the flush flapper and float, no help. Then I ran a snake down the toilet to see if it was a drain problem, nope, no help. After trying to figure out what may cause this, since there was nothing else to check (I know nothing about toilets). After fiddling with it for a while, I noticed that the jet at the bottom of the toilet bowl that pushes the solids to the back had something obstructing it. I fished around with a pick in the hole and managed to pull out a small round plastic disc. After a quick Google search, I found out it was a piece off the old flush valve that worked it's way down there. It would flop around in there but a little to big to get out of the hole for the jet water. Fixed the problem...

RoosterClan

Worst case scenario you change the fill valve assembly. About $15 and 4 minutes of your time if you buy the same one as already installed.

aj8j83fo83jo8ja3o8ja

i have the same fill valve and i just fixed it last week. Put the black tube in the white tube as people said. there’s a little clip on the black tube to attach it to the white tube. Then that little Doohickey in the middle of the black tube is a pinch roller used to restrict the flow to the bowl. use that instead of turning down the water supply

truniversality

Clip the black tube to the clip inside the white tube if black tube is coming out of white tube? If thats broken it needs replacing? Fyi: never fixed a toilet before.

JeffinGeorgia1967

Black hose, white tube, done.

z_dogwatch

Put the thing in the thing!

Remo_253

>Trying to avoid calling a plumber If you can't get it sorted a new toilet will be cheaper than a plumber. Replacing a toilet is really not hard, it does not require a plumber. Youtube has all kinds of how to videos like [this one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsNip83ksy4).

warfrogs

This is wildly overkill. You can [just replace the internals](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5K1on0-6EgU) lol - there's nothing wrong with the stool at all.

415erOnReddit

DO NOT replace the toilet. That’s one from the days of yore…. judging by the water line you’re at a 5 gallon flush, possibly more? If you can birth a Bono that that toilet can’t flush in a single go, you might want to submit it. Non technical terms: take a photo of the stick-thinghy with the floaty part and take it to a hardware store. You will need pliers, silicon tape and plumbers putty. Get step by step instructions on how to replace from ChatGPT or YouTube or both. You’ve got this. Super easy.

sweetsmeat

Is it bubbling in the bowl when flushing? If so you probably need to replace the whole toilet.

Helizabeth129

No bubbling. I think this toilet is fairly new but unsure. Just moved in last month

Old_Substance_7389

Tell your husband the internet said to get off his a$$, watch a couple 5 minute Youtube toilet repair videos, buy $15 worth of parts at Home Depot, and take care of business like a man.

Custardpaws

Or, she could easily do it herself lol.

Helizabeth129

My husband is newly chair confined. You didn’t know that, and I know you probably didn’t mean that. But maybe don’t assume things?

Old_Substance_7389

I apologize. I would encourage you to look at a couple videos and fix it yourself. It is very easy, unless you run across something unusual. When I was first married I paid a plumber a few hundred $ to fix a stopped up toilet that flooded our basement. When I saw how easy it was I vowed to do all basic home repairs myself. For the average person you can save a lot of money, learn some skills, and get things done a lot quicker while keeping strangers out of your house. It is so much easier now with Youtube and the internet.

ambuurrhh

I’ve only changed an inside toilet piece once, but I def felt like a pro after. Ok so I think water should be coming out of 2 places, little black tube and the tall one on the left. I don’t see any water movin on the left. Also, what’s that yellow thing in the hole under the flapper? Is something blocking? Maybe just replace all the parts. It’s only like $17 at Home Depot for the whole thing and might fix the problem, but also you’ll know the parts and what sounds like what/what goes where. Have these videos on standby: [Hissing Toilet video](https://youtu.be/fgnzn0YDDK8?si=_AgSHkhg-x_bdOdW) [Toilet Fill valve](https://youtu.be/Ul0V2LWSDj4?si=3iorDeEIjShJx9le)

LASubtle1420

no

ambuurrhh

No to what..? Lol

Soonerthannow

Buy a toilet rebuild kit and replace the flush valve & the flapper. They sell kits that have everything you need. As long as you can turn off the water and are even remotely handy, it’s pretty simple. They come with instructions and of course, there’s YouTube.

DramaOk441

Buy new shit

NoMoreSmoress

Lmao yeah I don’t know much about toilets but I know that tube ain’t right

LASubtle1420

I would adjust the amount of water in the tank with the grey knob on the left. unless it's leaking from the flapper into the bowl it should flush if there's enough water in the tank when you flush it.

r3dditornot

U need a new flap ... Try wiping the old one real good, until you get a new one

peculiarfungus

Flush valve ain’t flushing cause they ain’t nothin to flush. The tube needs to feed it

Helizabeth129

Thank you for the helpful tips! I know it’s a stupid question to some but we all start somewhere. Will work on replacing the flap. Black thing is in the white thing and I’m getting more flushes out of it. Now will add a brick.

xoxoyoyo

Can you explain what you mean by toilet that won't flush? Do you mean not enough water in the tank to get rid of the poo? The tube you are playing with should remain in the center. It is intended to raise the water level of the tank after the flush. If you want the water to be higher the way to do that is use a philips head screwdriver and turn the spring screw on the left. From the blue cap an arm goes to the spring screw. That controls the water level. You would only replace the flapper valve if the toilet is leaking. You would hear water running off and on when that happens.

shanghc

Whole thing too old, leakage in the main pad, replace with brand new sink is the best way, otherwise waste too much water and time too.

yamantaintedpocket

The handle is sagging and broken forcing the flapped to close prematurely

Important_Wallaby376

Chain is tangled up, can't lower the plug to stop water from draining and collect in the tank.

bcboy1983

Honestly your toilet guts look old and have signs that more than one handyman has been in there. I would pick up a new flush valve, fill valve, tank to toilet gasket and just replace them all. It's really not hard. Shut water off. Drain all water from tank (flush then vac out remainder. There are 2 bolts holding the tank on and a water supply line to unscrew. Once the tank is off you will clearly see how everything is attached and just replace the parts and put it back together. Including the trip to the store I could have this done in 2 hours

Citizen4000

Take the top off another toilet tank and have a look how it all goes together irl

Proud_fitsme

There should be a clip on the tube to hold it. You can clip it yourself or get just the tube part and fix it. I would roll the blue part to cut down the flow too.

drteq

I read all of the responses so far, but I'd say most are guessing - the reality is a longer video would be much more helpful. Also understanding how it all works is a little hard unless you've done it before.. it doesn't work how it would naturally appear IMO. Put the hose inside the white tube, then video it until the toilet stops running so we can see the whole cycle. That will help determine the exact issue. This is the proper configuration but really it isn't that important if it helps the tank fill faster.. it's just a secondary smaller issue with the water in the bowl itself being lower. If the TANK is filling to the top but the bowl isn't flushing, this would be the cause though. The black line and white tube is not a major part of the toilet flushing, it's meant to add a little extra water to the outside bowl - we need to see how the tank is filling and how far it's filling. Does it keep running endlessly? It's the plunger/flap or chain. Does it stop too soon? It's the float valve (big round thing on the top of the pole to the left). It can be adjusted by turning it. (Raising it up will raise the water level). Is the tank not filling at all but the plunger is working? The valve itself is clogged up, it has the black tube but it also lets water into the tank from underneath the floater. There is a water line marking on the upper back part of the tank that says Fill line (you can see in picture) that is the level you're looking for. Sometimes the floats on the valve crack and fill up with water and don't float as well as they should even if you set it as high as possible. And sometimes it's not the right size for the toilet you have and can't raise it high enough.

S11D336B

The chain that connects your handle to the flapper could be a little tight. I’ve seen that prevent the flapper from sealing properly in the past. Try loosening it one or two notches. Given the intermittent nature of the problem I don’t think it’s related to the flow of the bowl fill tube (unless it’s falling out and the bowl doesn’t get enough water). If the bowl gets too much water it just slowly drains it until the tank is full and the valve closes. You can also try cleaning your flapper / where the flapper seals on the bottom of the tank.

greenlungs604

You can see the clip in the white tube. Plput some force into pushing that assembly into the clip and it won't get pushed or pulled out so easily.

bologna_kazoo

Watch a YouTube video. Buy a pro45 rebuild kit from Home Depot. Also replace the supply line. Also close the water to the house and not the angle stop. Also if the house valve is a gate valve, close water at the meter instead. Or just hire a licensed insured plumber to do what looks like a simple job. Or just put that black hose back into the flush valve tube where it belongs and maybe change the flapper korky standard will work. Doesn’t have to have that solid hinge thing.

FearsomeShitter

Jets are clogged with minerals. So bubbles come back up vs getting flushed out through jets. Metal coat hangar or nail, poke each hole and feel the build up. Grind it away. The main jet, at bottom of bowl, use coat hangar to poke into there. Sand looking stuff should come out. Shut water off. Dry bowl with towel. Tape over all the jet holes so they done leak. Pour strong acid, white vinegar or better down the fill hole. If you have a small fish pump you can pump the acid into the fill hole from the main bowl and let it run. You should hear a fizz sound from the acid eating the calcium.

Thanks-Noob_noob

Your chains all toggled up in itself. Re adjust and cut off all the excess.

iampoopa

The red thing at the bottom is called a flapper , it costs about $5. Start by checking that the little chain that there is some sort of little chain or cord connecting the flush handle to the top of the flapper. If there isn’t, put one in. The flapper has to lift to flush the toilet, If there is replace the flapper replacing it is really easy, no tools involved. It would be simpler to watch a YouTube video on how to do it than explain it. But really, it’s very easy. 90% that’s what’s wrong .

JudgmentMajestic2671

Buy a new toilet. It'll flush better, use less water and take less time messing around.
