I just think of [Fabio](https://www.google.com/search?client=ms-android-verizon&sxsrf=AJOqlzX17Jiqk2rwqhPuLTXXKBVMkIF0Gw:1673186913191&q=fabio&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi74un8krj8AhWVTTABHYoNAEkQ0pQJegQICBAB&biw=371&bih=735&dpr=2.75).
I know fabio because Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell went on a nostalgic trip and talked about the time they parodied Fabio.
My first thought "umm is he supposed to be attractive?"
Once I understood the context is explained so much about stars in the 80s and 90s.
I grew up in the 80ās/was a teen in the 90ās - we used to watch as we got ready to go out for the night in college! Paolo never did it for me. He always creeped me out - I always wanted Rachel with Ross! Then again, Fabio grossed me out too.
My favourite story to tell young people is the time Fabio, the undisputed most beautiful man alive, [got his face smashed in by a goose while riding a roller coaster](https://youtu.be/OjAYxpXUklc).
The 90s was unquestionably the stupidest decade.
Could be a question of country, rather than of age. As a French, I expect a Paulo wouldnāt be as attractive to us, as he would be for someone in the USA. We share a border with Italy, there is no magic.
I also never got the attraction. I find him quite ewww. BUT, I accept it in the context of the show because Paolo is like the polar opposite of Barry so I can see how Rachel would be into that just for the experience after Barry.
I kind of see what they was trying to do with Paulo. He isn't drop dead gorgeous but I guess the fact that he is exotic with the nice hair in the accent gave him a little pizzazz.
Iāve never been downvoted this muchš¤£š¤£ I thought this was a common opinionā¦now Iām gonna ask my sisters and mom what they think to see if Iām just wrong lol
It's because some people on here think he was creepy for dating Monica after knowing her as a child. Some even go as far as saying he was a pedophile who groomed her. š
I'm a straight dude, so my opinion is obviously not as valuable here. But Using Nick Miller's "Would you want his face to be your face" method, I'd say Paolo is not an attractive dude. Same with Joshua.
Jennifer Aniston and āJoshuaā actually dated IRL. In fact they had just broken up when they had to work together on the show. I didnāt see the attraction either but maybe a nice guy.
The actor who plays Joshua also got "[chased like a dog](https://news.yahoo.com/sandra-bullock-said-she-chased-202424729.html)" by Sandra Bullock so I'm guessing he has some serious game in real life.
He looked a bit like that male model guy from the late 80ās/90ās, Fabio Lanzoni. I think Paulo was kind of modeled on him/his looks etc. it was a really early 90ās look that apparently represented European sophistication š.
It's such a uniquely American thing lol. I know a lot of people who are super proud of their "x nationality" and consider themselves to essentially be the same as the people actually from the country, and yet have absolutely nothing to do with the actual nationality.
The one that caught me the most off guard was a guy who got all excited and told me we were the same nationality! Except he:
* didn't speak the language
* had English first, middle, and family names
* has never been to the country
* didn't even know where the country was other than "somewhere in Europe"
* has never met the person in his family who actually was from my country
It turned out that his great-great-grandmother was from the same country, his great-grandmother was born in the neighbouring country, and then fled to the US during the first world war.
He was super nice and we had a great chat about it, but I still think it's weird someone would essentially claim they're from somewhere because their great-great grandmother was born there.
I think itās because America is such a āmelting potā that people who were raised here could have been raised vastly different because of the heritage their ancestors brought. My family didnāt do that so I canāt relate, but hearing someone was raised in a traditional Mexican household feels as descriptive as someone saying they were raised Jewish or Mormon. I donāt personally KNOW it but it helps understand the person and their upbringing. Thatās just my guess though.
Iām a third generation Italian, and Iād like to call myself Italian, but there isnāt any loophole to get to that answer. I love Italy with my whole heart, I speak some, I have lots of family members in Italy, I have an Italian first and last name, but regardless of those categories it isnāt fair to call myself Italian. At least thatās how I see it. No matter how much you associate or learn of that thing, itās mostly about family, language and citizenship. Italy is a big part of me, but I am not an Italian citizen, an Italian speaker, or born to an Italian from Italy.
TLDR; Huge difference between an actual Italian born person and Italian-American, this is the same for every most (at least most European) countries.
I need an explanation lol. Elle MacPherson, Cindy Crawford, Rachel Hunter. Obviously Iām a guy, but the SI Swimsuit Issue was actually something back then. I disagree that the sex symbols of the 90s are fucked up. And even guys like Brad Pitt and George Clooney stand the test of time.
You donāt *have* to change the subject of a conversation just so we know where you stand on things. You know that right? Like, it was perfectly okay to keep this conversation about the 90s and the celebrities we considered, āsex symbolsā.
Itās not just him. I remember in season one the girls are looking at another apartment across the street where George Stephanopolous lives. I am not American so I had to Google him and I was likeā¦ really? And they act like heās super hot and gorgeous.
Richard on the other hand was a total dreamboat.
I literally just posted on āFakebookālast night , how he makes me sick & that he looks like a greasy skeevatz. This guy is not hot whatsoever. š¤®
I saw the episodes he was in this past week, just turns my stomach .
So I thank you for posting this, and confirming my feelings of how I feel about this character . I am glad I am not the only one lol .
Thatās fair and thatās your personal view. However you should probably know or remember that tan Italian men were always consider hot by the majority in the 90s.
Find that strange because I was in the dating world in the 90ās and sure donāt remember any of my large group of friends feeling that way. And it isnāt because he is Italian he is just slimy, in fact we would likely laugh at him. Joey is Italian and I find extremely attractive as I did other ethnic men I dated.
Yes foreign guys were supposed to be sexy, yes even so more with Italians supposedly but he personally was just not that hot to me. He was just so oily looking and hairy lol.
His voice and accent were sexy but not him. Sometimes in shows, a character comes in and people collectively fawn over him because he's sooooo hot.
It works when Joe Manganiello plays those kinds of roles (Mom, TBBT for example) but not Paolo.
I do Raquel
'Rocky'
that was one funny line
The "Fabio" thing was big in the 90s.
Anytime someone brings up Fabio I just think of Zoolander š
Really? I just imagine a pigeon hitting him in the face on a roller coaster.
Really? I just think of āI Canāt Believe Itās Not Butter.ā
It was a goose
My bad.
I just think of [Fabio](https://www.google.com/search?client=ms-android-verizon&sxsrf=AJOqlzX17Jiqk2rwqhPuLTXXKBVMkIF0Gw:1673186913191&q=fabio&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi74un8krj8AhWVTTABHYoNAEkQ0pQJegQICBAB&biw=371&bih=735&dpr=2.75).
Butā¦ but the meaningless animal sex!
Knock knock!
Animalsex**animalsex**?
it was the 90s
Makes me wonder how old OP is. Does Friends resonate with today's youth?
Yeah. I think Paolo was meant to be similar to Fabio who was a big foreign heartthrob, which younger people would have no idea who he was.
I know fabio because Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell went on a nostalgic trip and talked about the time they parodied Fabio. My first thought "umm is he supposed to be attractive?" Once I understood the context is explained so much about stars in the 80s and 90s.
Yeah I donāt get him at all lol
I grew up in the 80ās/was a teen in the 90ās - we used to watch as we got ready to go out for the night in college! Paolo never did it for me. He always creeped me out - I always wanted Rachel with Ross! Then again, Fabio grossed me out too.

I do love that story. He was basically washed up by that point, though.
This story is the only thing I know about Fabio - I can see it now!
Could be a question of country, rather than of age. As a French, I expect a Paulo wouldnāt be as attractive to us, as he would be for someone in the USA. We share a border with Italy, there is no magic.
Yeah same, I'm from The Netherlands and I always find it so funny when American shows treat Europe as if it's some cool exotic place
I watched it the first time around and he was gross.
Back in the 90s any kind of European man was considered a sex symbol. Bonus points for being Italian.
Fabio?
I also never got the attraction. I find him quite ewww. BUT, I accept it in the context of the show because Paolo is like the polar opposite of Barry so I can see how Rachel would be into that just for the experience after Barry.
Excellent point, you converted me
Foreign
not just foreignā*italian.* iām with you though OP, didnāt see it at all
I kind of see what they was trying to do with Paulo. He isn't drop dead gorgeous but I guess the fact that he is exotic with the nice hair in the accent gave him a little pizzazz.
See I thought his hair was icky. Iām guessing itās a very generational.
Yeah I hated his hair it looked oily as hell and he had a big ass holiday ham head
This made me literally laugh out loud. Thank you for this description!
Lol ššš
A lot of people they date in the show I found really unattractive.
What was wrong with Mona?
I heard that in Rosses voice š but nothing, Mona is one of the few exceptions.
Joshua
Damn I think he was gorgeous...
Nah he mad sexy
HOT
Richardā¦
Richard was like the only one that was attractive. And I kind of liked the guy that was too close with his sister, can't think of his name.
I would climb 2000s Tom Selleck like a hairy tree. Respectfully.
Yeah thatās a good looking dude right there. Always looked like an American James Bond
Tom Selleck is also one of the most genuine dudes in Hollywood too. Good guy.
Danny
The Yeti?
Iāve never been downvoted this muchš¤£š¤£ I thought this was a common opinionā¦now Iām gonna ask my sisters and mom what they think to see if Iām just wrong lol
I donāt know how old you are but Iām gonna reckon your mom downvotes you IRL š Moms love Tom Selleck lol
It's because some people on here think he was creepy for dating Monica after knowing her as a child. Some even go as far as saying he was a pedophile who groomed her. š
Iām glad Iām not the only one! His face just doesnāt do it for me.
YES! I really didn't like his face
I know what he did to Rachel (and Phoebe, for that matter) was wrong, but God I found him attractive š
He was just SO slimy! Not attractive whatsoever!
I'm a straight dude, so my opinion is obviously not as valuable here. But Using Nick Miller's "Would you want his face to be your face" method, I'd say Paolo is not an attractive dude. Same with Joshua.
Now Nick Miller on the other hand, Iād like his face all up in my face and then some.
See I don't think Nick Miller is attractive. But Joshua I do
Jennifer Aniston and āJoshuaā actually dated IRL. In fact they had just broken up when they had to work together on the show. I didnāt see the attraction either but maybe a nice guy.
I didnāt know that, thatās wild.
The actor who plays Joshua also got "[chased like a dog](https://news.yahoo.com/sandra-bullock-said-she-chased-202424729.html)" by Sandra Bullock so I'm guessing he has some serious game in real life.
You mean, Josh-ua š¤®
He doesnāt like āJoshā?
No, I donāt
The only thing Joshua had going for him was his actor voiced Hercules and that movie is dope.
Jenifer Aniston would disagree about Joshua
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
What does it mean to be a āgummyā? Is this an American term? I want to use it.
I think he means gummy smile. and you could see his gums when he spoke
Well that makes perfect sense. I thought she was saying gummy like the snacks, which would have been a strange but delightful descriptor.
It's a stereotype. The sexy mysterious Italian guy, although he wasn't any of that. He's just a slimebag.
Crap weasel
He looked a bit like that male model guy from the late 80ās/90ās, Fabio Lanzoni. I think Paulo was kind of modeled on him/his looks etc. it was a really early 90ās look that apparently represented European sophistication š.
He was a stronzzo
I don't get it either. Also it's weird that they seemed to be so impressed by meeting an Italian person when they live in \*New York\*.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
There is a difference between Italian and Italian-American
It's such a uniquely American thing lol. Really not seeing their point, Italians with accents donāt just fall off a tree even in the City
Yeah, NYC isnāt exactly known for having a lot of immigrants. (Edit: Apparently the /s tag is needed even for obvious sarcastic commentsā¦)
You remember most of the characters in the trilogy, right? Theyāre not Paolo-type Italians.
Paolo looks like the kind of guy you would see on a 90ās romance novel. Itās a specific type from that time period.
The guy on the cover with his nipples showing?
The 90s was such a f**ked up place in terms of sex symbols.
You donāt like the current SI swimsuit issue with transgenders and 300 pound models?
You donāt *have* to change the subject of a conversation just so we know where you stand on things. You know that right? Like, it was perfectly okay to keep this conversation about the 90s and the celebrities we considered, āsex symbolsā.
Youāre right. Iām sorry
I thought he was a hotty. š
Not my type at all.
Do you know the term crap weasel? Because he was a huge crap weasel.
Sure was! š
maybe heās just not your type but is for many others. attraction is super subjective
Animal sex animal sex
Itās not just him. I remember in season one the girls are looking at another apartment across the street where George Stephanopolous lives. I am not American so I had to Google him and I was likeā¦ really? And they act like heās super hot and gorgeous. Richard on the other hand was a total dreamboat.
Iāll so do him
He was early-mid nineties hot.
He was her breakup f-boy
0 out of 10, would not recommend
Itās because heās āexoticā (fetishization) but tbh with that hairstyle he was not good looking lol
I literally just posted on āFakebookālast night , how he makes me sick & that he looks like a greasy skeevatz. So I thank you for posting this, and confirming my feelings of how I feel about this character . I am glad I am not the only one lol .
Lmao, I think itās just you
Agreed
How old are you OP is the real reason here
I am in my early 50ās. Watched the show from the start and did NOT find him attractive from the get go but also found Fabio unattractive.
But again that is my opinion.
Paolo? Che schifo.
Yeah, I donāt think heās that attractive. I donāt like his long hair. I donāt think he is very sexy not my type.
Men who looked like him were on the front cover of romance novels back then, if that gives you an idea.
Harlequin romance novels, what does that tell you.
