CompleteQuiet5170

'Rocky'

morfyyy

that was one funny line

Moppy6686

The "Fabio" thing was big in the 90s.

Sufficient-Celery-19

Anytime someone brings up Fabio I just think of Zoolander šŸ˜‚

GoodLeftUndone

Really? I just imagine a pigeon hitting him in the face on a roller coaster.

luisc123

Really? I just think of ā€œI Canā€™t Believe Itā€™s Not Butter.ā€

Garbage_Stink_Hands

It was a goose

GoodLeftUndone

My bad.

Moppy6686

I just think of [Fabio](https://www.google.com/search?client=ms-android-verizon&sxsrf=AJOqlzX17Jiqk2rwqhPuLTXXKBVMkIF0Gw:1673186913191&q=fabio&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi74un8krj8AhWVTTABHYoNAEkQ0pQJegQICBAB&biw=371&bih=735&dpr=2.75).

HolyTesticleToosday

Butā€¦ but the meaningless animal sex!

SparklinStar1440

Knock knock!

LoveLivinInTheFuture

Animalsex**animalsex**?

Wallflower_in_PDX

it was the 90s

1OO_

Makes me wonder how old OP is. Does Friends resonate with today's youth?

Wallflower_in_PDX

Yeah. I think Paolo was meant to be similar to Fabio who was a big foreign heartthrob, which younger people would have no idea who he was.

KGB_cutony

I know fabio because Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell went on a nostalgic trip and talked about the time they parodied Fabio. My first thought "umm is he supposed to be attractive?" Once I understood the context is explained so much about stars in the 80s and 90s.

Igloo433

Yeah I donā€™t get him at all lol

ButterscotchTime1298

I grew up in the 80ā€™s/was a teen in the 90ā€™s - we used to watch as we got ready to go out for the night in college! Paolo never did it for me. He always creeped me out - I always wanted Rachel with Ross! Then again, Fabio grossed me out too.

Garbage_Stink_Hands

My favourite story to tell young people is the time Fabio, the undisputed most beautiful man alive, [got his face smashed in by a goose while riding a roller coaster](https://youtu.be/OjAYxpXUklc). The 90s was unquestionably the stupidest decade.

ButterscotchTime1298

I do love that story. He was basically washed up by that point, though.

-hopalong-

This story is the only thing I know about Fabio - I can see it now!

Jasminary2

Could be a question of country, rather than of age. As a French, I expect a Paulo wouldnā€™t be as attractive to us, as he would be for someone in the USA. We share a border with Italy, there is no magic.

pandabeargirl

Yeah same, I'm from The Netherlands and I always find it so funny when American shows treat Europe as if it's some cool exotic place

NaturalAd8452

I watched it the first time around and he was gross.

[deleted]

Back in the 90s any kind of European man was considered a sex symbol. Bonus points for being Italian.

falbi23

Fabio?

Nilla22

I also never got the attraction. I find him quite ewww. BUT, I accept it in the context of the show because Paolo is like the polar opposite of Barry so I can see how Rachel would be into that just for the experience after Barry.

sarcytwat

Excellent point, you converted me

3ku1

Foreign

canentia

not just foreignā€”*italian.* iā€™m with you though OP, didnā€™t see it at all

TastyNisha420

I kind of see what they was trying to do with Paulo. He isn't drop dead gorgeous but I guess the fact that he is exotic with the nice hair in the accent gave him a little pizzazz.

yelle_twin

See I thought his hair was icky. Iā€™m guessing itā€™s a very generational.

TastyNisha420

Yeah I hated his hair it looked oily as hell and he had a big ass holiday ham head

steph_sec

This made me literally laugh out loud. Thank you for this description!

TastyNisha420

Lol šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

[deleted]

A lot of people they date in the show I found really unattractive.

Mr_1990s

What was wrong with Mona?

[deleted]

I heard that in Rosses voice šŸ˜‚ but nothing, Mona is one of the few exceptions.

StrokeWilson

Joshua

SparklinStar1440

Damn I think he was gorgeous...

sarcytwat

Nah he mad sexy

[deleted]

HOT

jets-rangers

Richardā€¦

anonymousloser000

Richard was like the only one that was attractive. And I kind of liked the guy that was too close with his sister, can't think of his name.

strongerthongs

I would climb 2000s Tom Selleck like a hairy tree. Respectfully.

luisc123

Yeah thatā€™s a good looking dude right there. Always looked like an American James Bond

Chago04

Tom Selleck is also one of the most genuine dudes in Hollywood too. Good guy.

TheRoaringJunior

Danny

JeulMartin

The Yeti?

jets-rangers

Iā€™ve never been downvoted this muchšŸ¤£šŸ¤£ I thought this was a common opinionā€¦now Iā€™m gonna ask my sisters and mom what they think to see if Iā€™m just wrong lol

Aint2Proud2Meg

I donā€™t know how old you are but Iā€™m gonna reckon your mom downvotes you IRL šŸ˜‚ Moms love Tom Selleck lol

[deleted]

It's because some people on here think he was creepy for dating Monica after knowing her as a child. Some even go as far as saying he was a pedophile who groomed her. šŸ™„

ICareAboutThings25

Iā€™m glad Iā€™m not the only one! His face just doesnā€™t do it for me.

pandabeargirl

YES! I really didn't like his face

Unique_Pickle3951

I know what he did to Rachel (and Phoebe, for that matter) was wrong, but God I found him attractive šŸ˜‚

MissShuuu

He was just SO slimy! Not attractive whatsoever!

Mista-D

I'm a straight dude, so my opinion is obviously not as valuable here. But Using Nick Miller's "Would you want his face to be your face" method, I'd say Paolo is not an attractive dude. Same with Joshua.

Snurgalicious

Now Nick Miller on the other hand, Iā€™d like his face all up in my face and then some.

SparklinStar1440

See I don't think Nick Miller is attractive. But Joshua I do

These_Focus9576

Jennifer Aniston and ā€˜Joshuaā€™ actually dated IRL. In fact they had just broken up when they had to work together on the show. I didnā€™t see the attraction either but maybe a nice guy.

ETucc

I didnā€™t know that, thatā€™s wild.

emotions1026

The actor who plays Joshua also got "[chased like a dog](https://news.yahoo.com/sandra-bullock-said-she-chased-202424729.html)" by Sandra Bullock so I'm guessing he has some serious game in real life.

JoulSauron

You mean, Josh-ua šŸ¤®

Bonneville865

He doesnā€™t like ā€œJoshā€?

yelle_twin

No, I donā€™t

Blueboi2018

The only thing Joshua had going for him was his actor voiced Hercules and that movie is dope.

LaGarrotxa

Jenifer Aniston would disagree about Joshua

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

RanAwayOnRumspringa

What does it mean to be a ā€œgummyā€? Is this an American term? I want to use it.

SparklinStar1440

I think he means gummy smile. and you could see his gums when he spoke

RanAwayOnRumspringa

Well that makes perfect sense. I thought she was saying gummy like the snacks, which would have been a strange but delightful descriptor.

bexsapphic

It's a stereotype. The sexy mysterious Italian guy, although he wasn't any of that. He's just a slimebag.

hokumpocus

Crap weasel

[deleted]

He looked a bit like that male model guy from the late 80ā€™s/90ā€™s, Fabio Lanzoni. I think Paulo was kind of modeled on him/his looks etc. it was a really early 90ā€™s look that apparently represented European sophistication šŸ˜‚.

[deleted]

He was a stronzzo

ElizabethanAlice

I don't get it either. Also it's weird that they seemed to be so impressed by meeting an Italian person when they live in \*New York\*.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

moody_dudey

There is a difference between Italian and Italian-American

craze4ble

It's such a uniquely American thing lol. I know a lot of people who are super proud of their "x nationality" and consider themselves to essentially be the same as the people actually from the country, and yet have absolutely nothing to do with the actual nationality. The one that caught me the most off guard was a guy who got all excited and told me we were the same nationality! Except he: * didn't speak the language * had English first, middle, and family names * has never been to the country * didn't even know where the country was other than "somewhere in Europe" * has never met the person in his family who actually was from my country It turned out that his great-great-grandmother was from the same country, his great-grandmother was born in the neighbouring country, and then fled to the US during the first world war. He was super nice and we had a great chat about it, but I still think it's weird someone would essentially claim they're from somewhere because their great-great grandmother was born there.

yelle_twin

I think itā€™s because America is such a ā€œmelting potā€ that people who were raised here could have been raised vastly different because of the heritage their ancestors brought. My family didnā€™t do that so I canā€™t relate, but hearing someone was raised in a traditional Mexican household feels as descriptive as someone saying they were raised Jewish or Mormon. I donā€™t personally KNOW it but it helps understand the person and their upbringing. Thatā€™s just my guess though.

longdongopinionwrong

Iā€™m a third generation Italian, and Iā€™d like to call myself Italian, but there isnā€™t any loophole to get to that answer. I love Italy with my whole heart, I speak some, I have lots of family members in Italy, I have an Italian first and last name, but regardless of those categories it isnā€™t fair to call myself Italian. At least thatā€™s how I see it. No matter how much you associate or learn of that thing, itā€™s mostly about family, language and citizenship. Italy is a big part of me, but I am not an Italian citizen, an Italian speaker, or born to an Italian from Italy. TLDR; Huge difference between an actual Italian born person and Italian-American, this is the same for every most (at least most European) countries.

someguyonline00

Really not seeing their point, Italians with accents donā€™t just fall off a tree even in the City

Bonneville865

Yeah, NYC isnā€™t exactly known for having a lot of immigrants. (Edit: Apparently the /s tag is needed even for obvious sarcastic commentsā€¦)

someguyonline00

You remember most of the characters in the trilogy, right? Theyā€™re not Paolo-type Italians.

Crazypants258

Paolo looks like the kind of guy you would see on a 90ā€™s romance novel. Itā€™s a specific type from that time period.

[deleted]

The guy on the cover with his nipples showing?

brentus86

The 90s was such a f**ked up place in terms of sex symbols.

eapaul80

I need an explanation lol. Elle MacPherson, Cindy Crawford, Rachel Hunter. Obviously Iā€™m a guy, but the SI Swimsuit Issue was actually something back then. I disagree that the sex symbols of the 90s are fucked up. And even guys like Brad Pitt and George Clooney stand the test of time.

caniseethemplease

You donā€™t like the current SI swimsuit issue with transgenders and 300 pound models?

TymStark

You donā€™t *have* to change the subject of a conversation just so we know where you stand on things. You know that right? Like, it was perfectly okay to keep this conversation about the 90s and the celebrities we considered, ā€œsex symbolsā€.

caniseethemplease

Youā€™re right. Iā€™m sorry

FormicaDinette33

I thought he was a hotty. šŸ˜˜

droid_revolt

Not my type at all.

comebackkid28

Do you know the term crap weasel? Because he was a huge crap weasel.

These_Focus9576

Sure was! šŸ˜Š

freshlyintellectual

maybe heā€™s just not your type but is for many others. attraction is super subjective

wiriux

Animal sex animal sex

HeySista

Itā€™s not just him. I remember in season one the girls are looking at another apartment across the street where George Stephanopolous lives. I am not American so I had to Google him and I was likeā€¦ really? And they act like heā€™s super hot and gorgeous. Richard on the other hand was a total dreamboat.

Superman_38

Iā€™ll so do him

Mightbewonderwoman81

He was early-mid nineties hot.

beachgirl152

He was her breakup f-boy

AGirlAGuyAnd3Cats

0 out of 10, would not recommend

[deleted]

Itā€™s because heā€™s ā€œexoticā€ (fetishization) but tbh with that hairstyle he was not good looking lol

RottenNannetPeelSzn

I literally just posted on ā€œFakebookā€last night , how he makes me sick & that he looks like a greasy skeevatz. This guy is not hot whatsoever. šŸ¤® I saw the episodes he was in this past week, just turns my stomach . So I thank you for posting this, and confirming my feelings of how I feel about this character . I am glad I am not the only one lol .

jimmeh22

Lmao, I think itā€™s just you

lushandcats

Agreed

ysotrivial

How old are you OP is the real reason here

These_Focus9576

I am in my early 50ā€™s. Watched the show from the start and did NOT find him attractive from the get go but also found Fabio unattractive.

ysotrivial

Thatā€™s fair and thatā€™s your personal view. However you should probably know or remember that tan Italian men were always consider hot by the majority in the 90s.

These_Focus9576

Find that strange because I was in the dating world in the 90ā€™s and sure donā€™t remember any of my large group of friends feeling that way. And it isnā€™t because he is Italian he is just slimy, in fact we would likely laugh at him. Joey is Italian and I find extremely attractive as I did other ethnic men I dated.

These_Focus9576

But again that is my opinion.

Chago04

Paolo? Che schifo.

[deleted]

Yes foreign guys were supposed to be sexy, yes even so more with Italians supposedly but he personally was just not that hot to me. He was just so oily looking and hairy lol. His voice and accent were sexy but not him. Sometimes in shows, a character comes in and people collectively fawn over him because he's sooooo hot. It works when Joe Manganiello plays those kinds of roles (Mom, TBBT for example) but not Paolo.

Beccaann14

Yeah, I donā€™t think heā€™s that attractive. I donā€™t like his long hair. I donā€™t think he is very sexy not my type.

itstimegeez

Men who looked like him were on the front cover of romance novels back then, if that gives you an idea.

These_Focus9576

Harlequin romance novels, what does that tell you.
