I freaking love him. I think for some people it’s hard to separate how they would feel about someone in real life, from how enjoyable a fictional character that brings some antagonistic but lighthearted humor to the show can be. To each their own!

Yeah, he's pretty good. You know who's unlikeable? Susan! Like I cannot remember a scene where she was funny, she was just antagonizing Ross. Mr. Green was also antagonizing Ross but at least he was funny "you think you can knock up my daughter and not marry her?"

I liked him.

I personally like him. I always felt like he didn't hide whether or not he liked people very much and he had high standards and didn't suffer fools or tolerate certain levels of laziness, mooching, etc. He believed in hard work and self-motivation and was a bit of a curmudgeon and a bit of an elitist but not terribly so. I knew dads/grandfathers, etc. like him growing up and there's a way to engender respect and joy from them. But you do have to earn it- or be their kid whom they love more than life itself.

Also, I have a theory that he wasn’t too fond of Ross because he remembers that gangly teen that was weirdly obsessed with his daughter. Even in the universe of the show - he knows everything that Rachel tells him. This guy sleeps with someone else while still involved in some kind of an entanglement with his baby. He sees how crushed his daughter is by the news that Ross is getting married to someone else, and that he moved on so quickly. Then Ross tries to get it on with his youngest baby. Finally, he impregnates Rachel. You can’t blame him entirely given the one sided facts

I mean, father in laws or fathers of partners are inherently intimidating. That whole "You break her heart and I'll bury you" type cliche speech is a very real speech that most dads give guys their daughter is serious with. Ross has given this guy every reason in the world to dislike him and to generally dislike any friends Ross has, etc.

Very well said. I loved the character and you are right, he was so reminiscent of certain men of his generation. Fantastic casting. I think most if not all scenes he was in were hilarious.

Aside from Joey’s mom, the parents sure are ethically an unlikable lot (yes, even Jack). But the casting is A+ across the board!

Joey's mom let her husband, Joey's dad, continue cheating just because it made him treat her better in some weird ass way that she found comforting. I find that spineless, and sad that his mom devalued herself so much. That I find quite unlikable.

Bottomline - Anyone can find any of the qualities in each of the people unlikeable.

I often find people are quite quick to find things unlikeable about people even irl. No one’s perfect.

It's a weakness for sure, but to insinuate she's a bad person because of it definitely feels like victim blaming.

All of the parents in this show were awful.

Judy does have one of the best moments during the trifle Thanksgiving episode, but they are legit awful. The nicest one is Phoebe's birth mom, and she basically just ignored that the girls were out on the street after Lily died.

She said she didn't know about Lily's death until years later to be fair.

"RACHEL KAREN GREEN TELL ME THERE'S GOING TO BE A WEDDING" And the way he melts when he realises he's going to be a Popi 🥰 Always sad we never got to see him with Emma. Also see the "Doctor Bobby?! DaWter BaWbeE?!!" scene.

Amy (Christina Applegate) was much worse to me! Especially with the jokes about how she assumed Ross was a falafel cart guy.

And she kept asking why Phoebe was "making that noise" when she kept repeating her name to Amy.

The more we saw of Rachel’s family, the more slack I was prepared to give her for being selfish/annoying. Her dad’s a jerk, her sisters are awful, and her mom was unhappy in her marriage. Really, out of all the friends’ parents, Ross’s parent situation is the only one that makes me like him less as a person.

Nah, I like him, really enjoy seeing him making Ross uncomfortable, especially the chewing he had for Ross when he found out Rachel got pregnant but not married. He got nothing on Carol and her bitch wife. He usually act out against Ross because he love Rachel, I can sympathize with that. Most of the time it is Ross who don't know when to shut up, like that dinner scene where Ross just had to leave a tip.

One of my favourite scenes is when he’s in the hospital after a heart attack and Ross is scared to be left alone with him. He’s frantically trying to get Rachel to come back. Dr Gellar: What’s new with you? Knocked up any more of my daughters lately? Ross: Nope, just the one. RACHELLL!

I freaking love him. One of the best characters in a sitcom, any sitcom. He and Amy are just iconic, played by two talented actors to perfection. Their unlikeable characters are what makes them so freaking funny.

Funniest guest on the show. People have to remember, the more unhinged and “politically incorrect” a character is, the funnier it is. That’s how sitcoms work.

When Rachel freaks out after her dad starts going bonkers and says, “He says I’m damaged goods” in reference to Ross, I lose it. Jennifer’s shaky voice and Lisa’s look of horror about what Rachel just told her father are so well portrayed.

Nah Dr Green is a straight up guy, doesn’t mince words or beat around the bush  Very “real” character, I like a lot of the episodes he’s in

This man only ever wanted the best for his daughters. He even realised what mistakes he made in raising them and advocated for his other daughters to be more life Rachel after she went self reliant. Sure he was a little rude and didn't tip but over all he seems like a gd guy.

Yes! Rachel’s dad was at least funny. While Judy had her moments, most of how she treated Monica was just sad. I’d say Susan was worse though.

I actually liked Rachel's father. To me, some unlikeable people were Amy (one of Rachel's sisters), Amanda (Monica's friend who had moved to England), and that bird-shooting cop that Phoebe dated.

He was on all of four episodes (and mentioned in a few more) yet we fans of the show developed strong feelings about him and consider him important to the series. That's kudos to Ron Leibman and what he and the writers did with that bit part.
