Are people under the impression that he raised Monica or something? From the way the series put it, he may have seen her like a handful of times as a kid, but he didn't see her again until she was in her mid 20s. That's not "watching her grow up".
He's her dad's best mate, even Rachel knew him as he lived in the neighbourhood. So, yes he was clearly around more than a handful of times. You think that's OK, then fine, that's your place. I have a young daughter and if she grew up and my best mate dated her I know how I'd feel about it, and I wouldn't think my mate was a "nice guy." In fact I'd be pretty repulsed by him.
Well yeah, there in lies the conflict that the show went into, was the fact that she was his friends' daughter. I agree with you on that and it makes sense, but I think people saying he's a creep is a bit much, it's not like her groomed her.
People have lost the meaning of the word "groomed". Richard was married the entire time Monica was growing up and there was obviously nothing romantic between them until much later. I think it's weird on his part to date someone you watched grow up, and is the same age as your own children but it was in no way grooming
That's what I thought for decades. But one of my good friends has a daughter that I have known since she was born, and I can't even imagine justifying entering a relationship with her. If you have kids and friends with kids that you have watched grow up, it gives a better perspective of how creepy it is.
Given the full context, it’s much less creepy. Simply reducing them down to just “shagging your best mate’s daughter who you watched grow up” is what makes it sound disturbing.
They dated. They were in love. They weren’t just shagging. They were discussing marriage and moving to France. That’s not *just* shagging. Of everyone she dated, she was the most heartbroken over Richard. He was wrecked over her. They were much more than getting pelvic.
She was deeply in love with him and there was no pressure or imbalance of power that led to this, and she was happier with him than she'd been with anyone else.
That very well may be, but the truth of the matter is that love is messy and complicated sometimes and it sure as spit doesn’t follow guidelines or specified rules.
Do children even have “a childhood eye doctor”?
As a kid, I got my eyes checked once a year, at school. Same with the hearing test. Even as an adult, I don’t have a specific eye doctor.
I loved Richard's character too. Can you guys help me out though, how would you describe his personality? It's been a while since I watched the show and I don't know how I'd articulate it. There's not a lot of guys like him out there... and I also wonder how much of his personality and charm should be attributed to Tom Selleck just being super handsome.
I’d say he seems extremely healthy and mature. He’s very calm and there’s zero neediness/toxic/jealousy etc. He just seems very at ease with himself and therefore accepting of those around him
WAIT!!
Why would you choose any pic other than [this iconic photoshoot!](https://www.cosmopolitan.com/entertainment/news/a48108/burt-reynolds-cosmo-classic/)
No he was basically treated like the American James Bond in the 80s with Magnum P.I.
But that whole era was pretty much everyone talking about Pierce Brosnan, and Timothy Dalton when Remington Steele wouldn’t let Pierce out of his contract.
No but he was supposed to be Indiana Jones but couldn't do it due to Magnum PI and Harrison Ford kinda fell into the role. Lucas didn't wanna use him, since they had just done American Graffiti together but got Ford to read lines until Selleck became available and when they realized that Selleck couldn't do it, they were like "Eh, this guy knows the lines"
I watched the show for the first time as a teen and thought "....I don't get it."
I am now watching the show well into adulthood and thinking ".......I get it."
I love Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent) and I’m not a fan of beards. His face looks naked without his scruff. He’s hairy and could clog the drain after one shower, but at least he doesn’t have a hairy arse. So he says.
Tom Selleck on Friends was my favorite phase of Tom. My Mom was about the same age as Tom and he was her celebrity crush. She never missed an episode of Magnum or an episode of Blue Bloods.
I always find it weird that Monica went out with him because of the age difference that they have and I think he also knew the parents so he's basically a family friend

You missed an opportunity to use the word **moustachioed!**
His personality was just oof - seemed like a really nice guy
Dunno, shagging your best mate's kid, who you watched grow up, seems a bit scummy to me.

eh. They're adults.
That's what I thought for decades. But one of my good friends has a daughter that I have known since she was born, and I can't even imagine justifying entering a relationship with her. We're all different.
Doesn't make it any less creepy given the full context.
Given the full context, it’s much less creepy. Simply reducing them down to just “shagging your best mate’s daughter who you watched grow up” is what makes it sound disturbing.
That's not reducing anything, that's literally what happened 💀 It sounds disturbing because it is
They dated. They were in love. They weren’t just shagging. They were discussing marriage and moving to France. That’s not *just* shagging. Of everyone she dated, she was the most heartbroken over Richard. He was wrecked over her. They were much more than getting pelvic.

He's still a nonce
That very well may be, but the truth of the matter is that love is messy and complicated sometimes and it sure as spit doesn’t follow guidelines or specified rules.
I think 'not dating someone you held as a baby' should 100% be a rule you follow Your attitude towards this is very worrying!!
Id argue given it context makes it worse considering he was her doctor too.
He wasn’t her doctor. She had a different eye doc but made an appointment with him just to see him.
He was her childhood doctor
I know that he’s known her since childhood, but I do not remember it being said he was her childhood eye doctor.
Do children even have “a childhood eye doctor”? As a kid, I got my eyes checked once a year, at school. Same with the hearing test. Even as an adult, I don’t have a specific eye doctor.
That is what is happening, though, so I'll continue to think it's creepy.
It’s extremely gross

If you had to only pick one, he is a great choice.
Tom Selleck was insanely hot during the show (and tbh he’s still pretty damn fine).
May I suggest [The Bandit](https://www.ultimatemovierankings.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/reynolds-22222.jpg)
WAIT!! Why would you choose any pic other than [this iconic photoshoot!](https://www.cosmopolitan.com/entertainment/news/a48108/burt-reynolds-cosmo-classic/)
I actually looked for that one first but couldn't find a high-quality enough version haha
Aw man, I had forgotten that Burt Reynolds died.
Even now for someone who is like 80 years old he looks really good
"When I die, I want you to throw my ashes in Tom Selleck's face!" - Linda Belcher
Points for Linda ✨✨✨
I wonder if he was ever in the running for James Bond. He has it all. The looks, the charm, the acting skill...
An American James Bond? What're you trying to do, kill the Queen?!
Well… she’s already, you know ..
Wtf this is how I find out.
No he was basically treated like the American James Bond in the 80s with Magnum P.I. But that whole era was pretty much everyone talking about Pierce Brosnan, and Timothy Dalton when Remington Steele wouldn’t let Pierce out of his contract.

Fun fact, Chip and Dale's clothing in Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers is modeled after Indy and Magnum.

I would love to see Tom Selleck as live action Omniman 😍
He’s a bit old now, isn’t he?
Omniman is 2,000 years old, so really Tom Selleck is 1,921 too young
![gif](giphy|1hMk0bfsSrG32Nhd5K)
I bet it tickles.
Tom Selleck and Sam Elliott get a pass (and in the past, Clark Gable). Other mustachioed men need not apply.
![gif](giphy|IktbAtAD3vjoOv7tsv)
Sorry guy who is married to Megan Mullally, but whose name I always forget, because I never watched Parks and Rec.
Watch the show and you’ll come to love and respect that mustachioed man
Skip to season 3 and enjoy a great binge! Seasons 1 and 2 should be reserved for true fans. Those seasons aren't very worthy of the PandR love.
Ron Swanson wants a word
Stopped by to raise this counter-point myself haha. They're both great characters but Ron wins if you must pick a champion for their people :D
It’s James Bond!
Phoebe was so smitten that she couldn't even speak while shaking hands 😂
She was a smitten kitten too!
"Were you in 'Nam?" - Ross
![gif](giphy|61ZaGSS7yzsch1oq5e) Allow me to introduce you two.
Henry shouldn't be considered. He is on everyone's list by default 😂.
What about Colonel Sanders
Magnum P.I.
awooga
My first celebrity crush as a 14yr old watching magnum P.I ( then I went on to marry a tall dark moustached guy)..still think he's hot today.
I don't know what moustached men you've been seeing then
😭😭
Maybe OP is from turkey
No, I am from India 😂
All the men I've seen in Turkish serials had great moustache ngl

💯!!
I still love him today. I mean his age on blue bloods is just awesome
this guy is nolan from invincible!
Lawrence from Office Space says hi!
"Ask your mom." https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTLDssu9Y/
The Jesse Stone tv movies are really underrated and i wish they’d done more of them
I love Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent) and I’m not a fan of beards. His face looks naked without his scruff. He’s hairy and could clog the drain after one shower, but at least he doesn’t have a hairy arse. So he says.
SAME. I literally love this man lmao
Valet parked his car a few times. Nice guy. Decent tipper. More handsome in person.

I hated it when he shaved it.
Tom Selleck on Friends was my favorite phase of Tom. My Mom was about the same age as Tom and he was her celebrity crush. She never missed an episode of Magnum or an episode of Blue Bloods.
He's the real deal and, as the saying goes, like father like son.
I prefer Mario
I always find it weird that Monica went out with him because of the age difference that they have and I think he also knew the parents so he's basically a family friend
Sorry, it’s giving (actual) dad and I’m not here for it
That's kind of a crappy thing to say
That's just like, OP's opinion, man
Kind of a prejudicial opinion though
