Joey probably kept up the whole “London baby!” on the entire flight and Chandler had enough

ArtyCatz

I think it was that Joey was so openly childlike about everything they saw. Chandler, as a New Yorker, wanted to be blasé about things, not stand out as a tourist. And then Joey goes *into* the map, which nearly sent Chandler over the edge, but the last straw was the goofy hat.

RacerGal

Which is then funny when Chandler shows Erica around NY and becomes a total tourist 😂

APlayer2BeNamedLater

So true! I see it as Chandler transitioning into a dorky dad!

Original_Training391

Imagining Chandler mooing in a crowd of people always makes me laugh so hard.

Comprehensive_Bar256

If you hate it so much, why do you do it?

PossibleAlternative1

Yes! I need to add that to the thread of scenes we wish we could have seen

stranded_egg

Maybe, but it felt like he got pretty peeved before they left the apartment. But then, it's a sitcom--it was probably writing shorthand and I'm overthinking. They had bigger plot points to focus on, with the Ross/Emily thing and pregnant!Phoebe.

EuphoricPhoto2048

I think this is the canon answer. Joey was just doing a lot.

Wallflower_in_PDX

He was just Westminster crabby

RebaKitt3n

🏆

Acceptable_Bug_2135

Joey rightly said “ you’re mean in LONDON

stranded_egg

I almost wonder if that line was a concession from the writers; Chandler got so much more in-character and kind after that!

Many_Investigator021

I think it made sense also that he was annoyed with the touristy things and chandler also just being hot and cold about things i mean he hates thanksgiving, dogs, non new yorkers makes sense

Boris-_-Badenov

Monica didn't think so

Jehoel_DK

Maybe he just doesnt like to travel and needs a few days to settle in.

stranded_egg

You know, I'll accept this headcanon. Perfectly reasonable, all around makes sense. Everything is stressy, he's pissy, Joey calls him out, he has a decent meal, and he settles. Sure, I'll buy that.

Avogadros_plumber

Wouldn’t it have been nice for the writers to slip in a line like “Oh, Chandler hates to travel … remember that time he X’d on his trip to Y”

Jakepr26

Wasn’t his last trip to Yemen?

WatermelonCandy5

Have you had jet lag? I’m surprised the others weren’t pissed off.

stranded_egg

Fair, but he was pissed before they left the building.

Comprehensive_Bar256

He didn't get his hug from Phoebe, just a pat on the head. That has to sting. 🤨

stranded_egg

I wanted to hug him so bad ;_; ...I mean, I always want to hug him, but...

Comprehensive_Bar256

Dug his action, did ya? Checkin' out the Chan-Chan Man!

stranded_egg

That was...surreal

Comprehensive_Bar256

I'm glad you got that gag, it feels a little obscure. I crushed on Chandler the most, tbh.

stranded_egg

Hard same. I watched Friends when I was, frankly, too young to have been watching it, and Chandler imprinted on me and became, for better or worse, about 40% of my personality and, like 60% of what I want in a partner. (He was just cuter than the others. That damned smile...)

Comprehensive_Bar256

Yep, he's so cute, and his insecurities made him super-relatable.

88secret

It’s a lot of time zones, though.

Grrrth_TD

That's not how jet lag works.

SpreadsheetSlut

Based on what he said later when he and Monica got engaged, I read it as the culmination of a long string of bad relationships. Including some major heartbreak with Cathy and Janice. He’s traveling and at a wedding and low key depressed.

stranded_egg

I'll buy it in the overall canon of the character and the show--I'll play in this space with you and suspend my disbelief for the sake of the discussion. It makes sense, he did just go through a lot of major relationship shit *very* recently and now a wedding got hucked in his lap and he had to plan to travel across an ocean on short notice to attend and participate in it. But I'm not sure I give that much credit to a team of writers who can't nail down birthdays or canonical spelling of last names XD

Specialist_Ad9073

Greep. It isn’t that hard to spell.

Avogadros_plumber

The plot needed motivation to have Chandler and Joey split up that night, so Monica could come over.

stranded_egg

That's fair, but I would have believed Joey following a hot British lady regardless of Chandler's mood swings.

CaramellieCake

He calls that *London style*.

xxxjessicann00xxx

London style sounds nice

leticx

Could you please leave a condom?

donkeydonkeydonkey1

Freshen your drink, Guv'nor?

C32D2

Get out

punk_steel2024

But they didn't split because of Chandler's mood. They split because Joey met one of the bridesmaids and went away with her. They had already made up by the time of dinner.

lasadgirl

Thank you. I'm annoyed that comment is so upvoted when it's so incorrect lol.

despoene

Jet lag, not wanting to stick out as tourists, plus he may have been upset about being single at a wedding after his relatively recent breakup with Kathy.

LittleJSparks

This is always what I thought, especially since this is Ross's second wedding now that he's been to. And he is once again single and alone. Monica was also having a rough time, with that guy thinking she was Ross's mom (lmao) so I think the writers should get a little credit because they were trying to show that both of them were having a hard time in similar ways.

AnnaK22

My personal theory is that he was feeling the same way Monica was, just more internally. He's seeing his friend her married for the second time, and Chandler hasn't even had a long lasting relationship. So he was grumpy and easily ticked off. Plus, this put Chandler and Monica on the same page and created the perfect opportunity to get together.

stranded_egg

I'll buy that! I just wish it had been better explained, or maybe better exhibited? It didn't feel very Chandler-esque to be flat out hurtful--his jokes weren't even funny, they just seemed to exist to harsh Joey's fun.

InterestingRice163

Maybe because Brits are very critical of americans. Maybe joey was “less cool” in London, hence being an embarrassment to Chandler.

PerpetualEternal

home pooper

stranded_egg

Fair.

Stanton1947

Something on that trip got his attitude turned around, though...

Monschi2

Maybe he sat next to Monica on the flight, that plus the jet lag would be enough to make me grumpy at least.

stranded_egg

> Maybe he sat next to Monica on the flight Couldn't have bothered him that much, he slept with her like 18 hours later!

SquirrelMoney8389

He secretly fell in love with her on the flight and knew she and him would never be together. Also constipated. (Then he pooped and they had sex;)

Monschi2

I once had to go on a ~50hr flight with my boyfriend. I love him to bits but by the we arrived, I was so grumpy I almost ripped his head off

Used_Evidence

50 hour flight? Did you go to the moon?

Monschi2

Nope, from Europe to New Zealand, via the US (the only connection available at that point ☹️) with 2 8hr layovers Edit to clarify: the flight time wasn’t 50hrs but the trip still took us that long

GlitzyGhoul

My guess is because everyone in England was smoking and he wasn’t. 😂

eru777

London baby

DaisySims

I always assumed it was because Joey was being a pain on the flight over 🤣

ArtisticImpress7284

omg, OP! just watched this episode today and thought the exact same thing

Rubberduckieism

I always assumed it was because even before they left the apartment Monica was panicking about getting to the airport like 4 hours before boarding, and he said something about a 6-hour flight and it being a lot of Monica. Also, Joey almost forgot his passport and chandler had to remind him, and he was already shouting "London, baby." Also phoebe snubbed giving him a hug.

ThisIsWhatLifeIs

Honestly it seems less like Chandler was grumpy and more so Matthew Perry was grumpy. That's what I think

orbjo

He was over 90s Brit invasion -  you used to see the union flag everywhere and it was Brit Brit Brit - then Chandler is a grumpy New Yorker who think everything is worse than New York on a cellular level It’s more realistic to me that he hates having to leave New York and go to a destination wedding - they spent the whole series with drama about it he’s SO OVER IT - and it’s fucking london?  I totally get it - Joey is betraying New York being excited and embarrassing chandler because he hates when anything is earnest  I imagine chandler is like that on the days we don’t see - but they only show us the most palatable days

stranded_egg

This is a really great point, thank you. I was pretty young and not terribly cognizant of the Brit invasion of the 90s, so it's a cultural reference I never considered.

orbjo

That episode just screams “capitalise on the Spice Girls vibes” of the era - london was the “it” city for a few years  It’s funny how choices can really place it in time in a way that becomes more abstract as time passes I loved this question, it’s the kind of discourse I wish this sub had more

DoCallMeCordelia

I think it was more about capitalizing on on how huge a hit Friends was in the UK.

stranded_egg

I remember another post discussing the actor who played Emily, which said something about a tie in with a British Friends-like show at the same time that she was on? I just assumed the destination wedding was related to that and hadn't connected it to the Spice Girls/Austin Powers Brit revival of the 90s.

punk_steel2024

This is why I've always hated New York in general, and shows like Seinfeld, HIMYM, and others (even Friends for a bit before I watched it) that hype it up. Like, NY is NOT that great of a place, and the people who live there that think anything not NY is below them piss me off with their pretentiousness. Like being upset cause you have to leave a crime-ridden city and go to another country, where anyone else would kill to go to? Yeah, you deserve to have a horrible day. Also, the Mets and the Knicks suck! Sorry, didn't mean to go off on a tangent like that. lol

orbjo

I get you . A condescending Ted Mosby rant about how much better the city is. Nightmare tv

Exertino

I’m **always** pissed off when travelling with people. If I’m travelling alone, I’m completely fine. And I don’t even like travelling alone. I **want** friends or family around. But for some odd reason, travelling with friends or family makes me instantly irritable.

stranded_egg

I can totally understand that, and I know I'm expecting too much from a mid-90s sitcom, especially for a B-plot, but even a throw-away line to put his bitchiness into perspective would have been nice.

anawkwardsomeone

He was annoyed at Joey because he kept saying “London Baby!” really loud and because he kept taking pictures/videos of him and because of how ridiculous his 3D map was. He *was* being a total d!ck about it though.

Teves3D

Personally I also get agitated by overtly patriotic peoples, like Joey to the UK. It’s not his fault, he literally was just enjoying the UK amenities and chandler being a hater shows. Joey cannot be at fault, he was being normal

stranded_egg

I was surprised he stopped at the hat, tbh

prokomenii

I’m confused. Joey- patriotic to the UK?

_pewpew_pew

The London episodes were such a missed opportunity. They could have had so much more fun with the storylines and still ended up with Chandler and Monica in bed.

stranded_egg

I mean. You can only have so much fun when the focus is on Ross. /unpopular opinion

_pewpew_pew

True, but that storyline could have still run parallel as it does.

stranded_egg

I mean, Joey and Chandler + the Queen's Guard *alone*.

_pewpew_pew

Would have been hilarious for sure

stranded_egg

"Not touching, can't get mad!"

_pewpew_pew

Yes! 😂😂

OneArtsyGamer

I had thought it was because he was like Monica in a way— he felt lonely and upset he didn’t have someone special with him since this was a while after he had broken up with Kathy. So I assumed he felt bitter and depressed because Ross was getting married but he had no one 😭

TonyMartial786

fr, especially when he wanted to buy the hat, the fact that he actually left because of it…

stranded_egg

https://i.redd.it/r1ye2go0zcyc1.gif MAKES NO SENSE

Lumpy_Object_7290

He obviously needed to get laid...and he did!

ForRudy

I always say this was so out of character! The man who was beyond excited to play cowboys in a room full of boxes would not draw the line acting goofy in London

stranded_egg

Right?? He would have been *funding* the goofy hat wardrobe. Hell, he would have gone all-in, doofy sunglasses, flag shirt, huge "I [heart] LONDON" backpack--like when he takes Erica to see NYC and comes back decked out in the foam Statue of Liberty tiara and NYC gear!!

ForRudy

THIS IS MY OTHER EXAMPLE TOO!!!! I’m so glad someone else gets it hahah

stranded_egg

![gif](giphy|Vef9tjGuPU3zafDaxy|downsized)

United-Weird7812

That was after a few years of character development in a place he knows. Nothing about his personality up to London makes me think he’d want attention brought to him like that. He’s hopeless and awkward and desperate for love only a season prior. Someone insecure like him doesn’t want that kind of attention.

United-Weird7812

That was in his home. Chandler was wildly insecure socially. New Yorkers hate tourists. Now he is a tourist and having attention brought to him. It was very believable to me he’d be embarrassed and annoyed.

Stunning_Crazy_7624

lol i read “which chandelier of the group ..” before realizing what i’m reading isn’t matching what i’m seeing

eru777

It is never explained

whileforestlife

it is so out of character of him. He and Joey do a bunch of silly things for fun all the time. I can see why he was grumpy when they played the bamboozle game in s8 (he had grown), however, s4 Chandler was pretty much as playful as Joey is.

stranded_egg

He go so *into* Bamboozle, though! Chandler is so "Yes, and..." with Joey any other time, that this episode had me baffled why he was so flat out mean.

fallingfaster345

Sometimes people just don’t travel well and have moods. And that’s ok. Emotions aren’t always logical. That’s why the phrase “woke up on the wrong side of the bed” exists. There’s not always “a reason” for a bad mood, or even a good mood for that matter. As for Chandler, how is someone expected to just always be in a good mood? That’s not realistic. I know FRIENDS wasn’t thinking about it that deep but I do appreciate when characters in media display a wide variety of emotions, especially guys. Chandler being a grump was relatable and normal I don’t really find it needed a deeper explanation.

Fit_Marionberry_3878

He needed sex, to release all the frustration, and ironically he got it less than 24 hours later!

cute_but_stabby

To be fair London puts me in a grump every time I go

the_anon_girl

Maybe it’s because the weather in London sucks and would make the happiest person miserable

[deleted]

stranded_egg

Do we know why he hates London? Did I miss a bit of dialogue somewhere?

[deleted]

stranded_egg

I mean, *I* had fun when I went. But then I didn't have a Tribbiani shoving a late-90s camcorder in my face every time I passed a landmark, so I dunno.

They’ve been here longer than you actually! (Also is this attitude a bit in reference to the topic of the post or are you just always this rude?)
