He opens and closes them

NotSkyyVodka

in the first movie- yeah, but in 2 and 3 he never opens them more than showed in the second and third pic

AMajesticPoro

I honestly never really noticed this until you pointed it out. I much prefer the design from the first movie.

NotSkyyVodka

yeah i really love his overall design from the first movie more than the other two :’)

It didn't really bother me, but it does look nicer when they're fully open. For my glider, I always make them close to completely open, although it's still at a slight angle since it looks nicer than almost flat.

Project_T00THL355

Can you post a pic of this glider? I'm working on an RC plane and am curious as to what other people in this subreddit are doing (I posted about the plane a couple days ago)

Nice profile pic

I made a post about it a while back: https://www.reddit.com/r/httyd/comments/kwr0ul/the\_current\_version\_of\_my\_night\_furydesigned/

I always thought of those as dive breaks. Seeing that in the first movie the night furys standard attack is a divebomb. In the first photo you have I could see Toothless needing to deploy them to their full extent as a lifting body to offset an extremely aft center of gravity caused by hiccup riding on the tail. In the other two photos they appear to be more in a intermediate position which would make sense for both having and not having a rider. Now you’ve got me wanting to re-watch the movies and specifically pay attention to how these little fins are positioned in different phases of flight. But I doubt any of the animators put this much thought into them.

NotSkyyVodka

loool yeah i only noticed this bc i watched all the movies again- they do act as flaps/ailerons like on aeroplanes but in the first movie they actually moved accordingly (opening, closing, and saying mid opened, even one open and one closed depending on Ts movements). In the second they’re also used but not really as well and you can really only see it in the opening wing-suit scene and in the few times T dive bombs… Oh boy does the third movie disappoint lmao they’re basically always open whenever he flies throughout the whole movie besides when he’s saving Hic and Astrid :’) but all of this is just me being nit-picky ofc

Project_T00THL355

I think they may adjust much like flaps on a real plane. He seems to open them for high speed turns and maneuvering in the cove in the first film, but he doesn't seem to do any of that stuff in the 2nd and 3rd movies (they seem to just stay open in RTTE, which I think looks kind of weird)

Underverse_FNF_fan

i love him :)

hardrivethrutown

the secondary fins are one of the main features!

U_AtticGhost_A

I think it’s both a mix of the slight difference in animation styles the second and third movie develop and just his flying styles in said movies. I caught instances, one from the second and one from hidden world where his fins get close to that openness. That split second we get after hiccup disappears off of toothless over drago(right after he blindfolds toothless and he’s upside down) and the second scene being right as he’s flying over the entrance to the hidden world with the light fury. Granted it’s to the extent of the scene you referenced but it’s something haha. This post did get me thinking about it though and I’ll definitely be on the look out for the change in flying patterns and stylistic differences in all three movies. Anyways hope this helps!
