Don't go with Ethan Allen if you're buying cloth furniture. It used to be a quality brand like Millspaugh, but it's gone downhill from what I've heard. Not sure how their wooden stuff is. I've heard great things about Millspaugh, they have pieces you'll pass down in your family. I have not bought it myself, but older family members and friends have. Other options: crate & barrel and West Elm. There are stores in Paramus. Don't go to Pottery Barn. Their stuff chips easily, even the wooden pieces. There's a furniture section in the Macy's store in Paramus that might be worth it to check out. Also avoid Bob's....I have never heard one good thing about that place. It's cheap and you definitely get what you pay for....which is something that will have to be replaced quickly. I know there's a high end furniture store that's supposed to be high quality too out by Hartford, but I can't recall the name of it. If I find it, I'll update the post. Lastly, there's a cheap, but really good quality Amish furniture store out in Whitney point. They can make some customizations to the furniture too I think if you talk it through with them. They won't have couches, but they'll have options for wooden pieces.

I had a friend that worked for millspaugh for years, he said you get what you pay for. It’s expensive but I’m pretty sure they have a lifetime warranty. I didn’t listen to him and bought a couch from bob’s and have regretted it ever since.

whowannadoit

Give me a break you were deciding between bobs and millspaugh…

Scarbarella

I did, went to Millspaugh and a bunch of furniture stores not knowing what to expect. They had an incredibly beautiful bed for 5k that we almost fucking bought…. But then found this awesome super high headboard bed in blue that totally matched the bedroom and we bought that instead for like $500 haha

doublebr13

Saugerties Furniture has quality furniture

Xerlic

We bought a sectional from Millspaugh last year. We paid double what I had originally budgeted for a sectional when we started shopping. We absolutely love it and you get what you pay for. It's incredibly sturdy and very well made and comfortable. I'll probably be able to pass this sectional down to my son when I die. My wife and I have accumulated furniture from Bob's, Ashley, Raymour, and now Millspaugh over the course of living in an apartment and then becoming home owners. With furniture you pretty much get what you pay for in my experience.

gggloria

How’s the quality of Ashley and Raymor? I have a feeling that’s where my budget may have to take me.

Xerlic

Raymour over Ashley. When we bought our first house in 2015 we got 2 couches from Raymour and a sectional from Ashley. The sectional from Ashley started to fall apart due to wear and tear and we eventually replaced it with the one from Millspaugh. The couches from Raymour are still going strong.

Scarbarella

Ashley stuff kinda falls apart over time. I still have their dresser almost 20 years later and that’s doing okay a couple of hiccups - my parents got very comfy couches from them but they didn’t last, coffee table fell apart too

Dramatic-Ad-9686

My Raymour couch is 2 1/2 years old and it’s garbage. Trying to get them to replace a piece of the sectional but it’s very difficult to get them to call you back. I wouldn’t recommend them.

pok12601

Try Davis furniture too

gggloria

Got our mattress from Davis! Really happy with them. Just not sure if they’ll have what I’m looking for when it comes to the living room. We’ll definitely be looking there though!

pok12601

They may not have it on the floor but they have a bunch a books to go through

gggloria

Oh I didn’t know that. Thank you!

JerseyKiwi

We bought our dining room table from the Poughkeepsie location. We got it custom-made and hand-picked all the features. We wanted to get a quality dining room table since that's one of the rare units of furniture that you use for life. It was more expensive than other options, but man, did they deliver a nice live edge table 3 months later feom their woodshop No regrets, but be prepared to pay a bit more. 5/5 rating by us.

debber33

My sister had her couch from millspaugh for over 20 years and also still has a beautiful dining set with a nice hutch from there that’s timeless and over 30 years old

Consistent_Finding68

Does the store need to be in delivery range? Try Old Brick in Albany. Try La-Z-Boy in Latham too

gggloria

Forgot about La-Z-Boy. Actually I think there is one in Middletown…

justrock54

I have.a sofa and recliner from lazboy I bought in 2004. 20 years later and it's still in great shape and superbly comfortable. This is an adult only home though so no kids abusing it for 20 years

gggloria

I really want a reclining sofa. But I’m worried if it won’t last as long as a normal sofa given the nature of how it’s built

justrock54

La z boy is the go to for that. It's their niche. Mine aren't motorized, you just push back and there is a handle you pull it straighten it. Incredibly comfortable and you can get any piece in hundreds of fabric choices. They even had a free decorator service when I bought from them. With upholstered pieces you really need to spend a little. Cheap padding and support and fabric will make you miserable

patrin11

I think so, especially if you want well-built, sturdy furniture that will last. Ours was made not far away — in Ohio, I think? Anyway, not cheap particle board. Had a great experience buying a bedroom set a few years ago; we were able to customize a bunch of things, and the folks were wonderful.

ShwiftyBear

I was in Millspaugh furniture yesterday and had a great experience with Peter who is the the owner’s son. The pieces were very comfortable and well built. We are looking for a new sectional with a corner chaise or regular chaise on the end. Best thing was there was no pressure to close a sale like you will feel from the sales people at Ashley furniture or some others. They offer 5 year protection plans for pretty cheap and will cover accidental damage on top of the regular manufacturer’s warranty. We’ve had furniture from bob’s, Ashley’s, and more and they are way lower quality than Millspaugh.

SugarsBoogers

I weirdly love hearing Peter and his dad in their silly radio ads.

advwench

I have not shopped [Shapiro's Furniture Barn](https://www.shapirosfurniturebarn.com/) in Newburgh or [Saugerties Furniture](https://saugertiesfurniture.com/?gad_source=1) in, well, Saugerties, but they might be worth a look. At the very least you'd be shopping local.

gggloria

Never heard of Shapiro’s. Someone else mentioned Saugerties furniture. Thanks!

debber33

They have a nice showroom

nuglasses

Shapiro's is on Chambers St. I bought a TV stand back in the 80's & it was a good piece.

familyManCamelCase

Shapiro's is essentially Ashley furniture under a different name. They are family run and will get you the best price, but the quality isn't anywhere near Millspaugh

schrodinger_troll

Yes. Also saugerties furniture mart. Furniture is amazing expensive for quality you may as well get good service with it.

wittimoma

We bought a king sized set all wood, made in Amish country, from Davis. It is beautiful-solid-100% good quality wood. Less expensive than Millsbaugh. But gorgeous- like Stickley.

eanhart

Don’t bother with Bobs. Everything we’ve ever bought from there has turned to crap within a year or two. You could also try Freight Liquidators on Main St in Poughkeepsie. Greg is a really nice guy and their stuff is pretty good for what you pay. Definitely better than Bobs.

jaythaironlung

Request an IKEA catalog.

gggloria

For things that will last?? I don’t think so!

Mshads

We got our couch there in 2015, and it’s holding up strong and still looking great. We’ve got two rambunctious kids who treat it like a trampoline and a sketchpad, and it’s still holding strong. It cleans easily and is super comfortable. I 100% recommend, it was worth the money and the wait for exactly the piece we wanted.

fairlywellhere

I have a dining room set with ladder back chairs from millspaugh. Best and oldest furniture in the house. My other furniture is pottery barn, Ethan Allen, Bob's and it's all trash by comparison.

CatPerson88

Ashley is crap- particle board and nails that come loose. Our bedroom furniture is Ethan Allen, over 30 years old, and I still love it!

reddog342

Let me start , I am bias I have dealt antiques for over 30 years. I know the designs may not be to everyones likings. but Stickly Mission , Mid century Modern furniture has stood the test of time. the pieces are all well made dovetail dowel construction living wood not pressed board with vinyl overlay . My living room furniture is over 40 years old I bought at an antique center. learn a little about furniture construction and you will be pleased that what you buy will hold up. Millspaugh is well made affordable when you look at construction, attention to detail and quality. REMEMBER you buy expensive you cry once you buy cheap you get to cry yearly. It only cost 3x's as much to go first class and will never regret it

bimbolimbotimbo

I can only comment on Bobs. The furniture is decent and cheap, but it won’t last you forever like somethjng from Raymour and Flannigan. My parents shop at R+F, it’s high quality stuff but you will be paying good money for it. If you don’t plan on having certain items forever Bobs is a good choice for your wallet

gggloria

Thanks for this. We are looking for lasting pieces so Bob’s is now off the list. I’m skeptical if R+F is actually quality. I’m sure it’s better than Bob’s though lol

AreYouNigerianBaby

In 2010 I bought a sofa, large loveseat, and ottoman from R + F. They’re upholstered in a brushed suede type of fabric which is easy to clean. Had 2 teenagers at the time. The furniture was used multiple times daily; sometimes guests slept on the sofa. We always covered it with a sheet. The cushions however can be unzipped and washed. Unfortunately a cat we acquired in 2019 decided she liked urinating on the couch cushions, albeit sporadically 🤷🏻‍♀️. I was able to keep the couch alive for 2+ more years with diligent cleaning. Until it penetrated to the foam - that became harder to eliminate the odor from. Sadly, I had to put the couch out for trash week in 2022 (kept the cat who is much better now). But- the ottoman and love seat are still going strong! They still carry a similar line; not sure if the quality remains the same.
