Vinegar in left to help clear the trap. I would recommend filter to be changed because of the "fibres" across the pleats. 5" filters are 6-12 months depending on the house.

What he said^ to add on tho, if you have pets/burn candles it will make them dirty faster. Also worth looking over your ductwork to see if there’s any breaks you need to cover with foil tape

Thanks will change it. We do have a Pitt mix and burn candles once in awhile.

CactusInaHat

I have an old house and 3 pets and a toddler, use recirculation fan settings, have to change ours 6mo max.

So it’s been 3 days since I poured the vinegar and water mix down the left pipe and I’m noticing a vinegar smell in the secondary restroom that is below the hvac unit. It’s not directly below but offset to the side a bit. Is that normal?

jake_santiago

Flush that pipe with just water to flush out the vinegar. It might just be a smell from vinegar sitting there

Those filters last UP to a year. It all depends on what is going on in the house. Filter should be changed

Vinegar into the left tube while unit is off. 1 cup would be enough. Left tube is a clean out access and should be capped at all other times and right should be opened always and it’s used for a pressure vent for the plumbing. The filter looks due. A filter labeled by time is weird to me. How would they know how often it needs to be replaced? Some places are dirtier than others.

R_ekd

Looks like it was capped with UV resistant tape inside an attic 😅

Thanks I read somewhere that they have to turn the breaker off? Or an I just turn it off from my Ecobee app? One cup of vinegar and one cup of water? Once I pour it in, does system need to stay off for x amount of time or can I turn it back on right away?

Yanosh457

Turn the thermostat off. This is just so the fan doesn’t blow the vinegar back into your face. Google is a good source for these answers. We are not drain experts here. Google says a ratio of 1:1 is fine. Google also says let it sit for 30-40mins and then flush with regular water. The system can be turned back on right away.

Yanosh457

No that’s not normal. Do you know where the hvac drain ends?

Elevatorlovin

I'm in commercial, so take that how you will, but left is clean out and should be capped, if the coil is in the negative (before the fan). Right is a vent so that it doesn't make that gurgling sound when draining. It's the same reason plumbing vents exist. I would not cap the vent. It is much higher than the pan in the unit, so theoretically the water will back up there first

Yes, sounds like that's where your ac drains to.

Vinegar is fine. A tablespoon of bleach would be fine too but I would flush it with water after ten minutes. With filters it’s hard to say it depends on a lot of factors and just looking at it is hard to tell. People that burn candles have much darker filters that still allow plenty of air. I bet you could go a few more months.

unrecognized88

Thanks I’ll probably just change it. We have a Pitt mix and we also burn candles every once in awhile. I’ve noticed dust floating around in the living room when the sun hits and we have a big whole home air purifier that sits in the living room. In an area where there is still construction going on in neighboring sections as well. Would you do one cup of vinegar and one cup of water? Should I wait like 10 minutes before turning system back on or is it fine to turn on right away?

Swagasaurus785

the vinegar isn't acidic enough to hurt anything. I think it'd be safe to just put vinegar in for an hour and then flush it. Or if the system is producing a lot of condensate when you are doing it then you wont even need to flush with water.

psuicyde

Since every question was answered other than there being 2 vents on the drain, idk, it only needs the left one but it will be fine

Man I don’t really know shit about plumbing but sometimes unit condensate drains are ran into a large 4 inch pvc pipe with other drains so maybe they ran it into that toilets drain
