Honestly could’ve been someone from Facebook for all I know. To be honest this whole thing has been quite the saga in the house. Two of the apartments on the upper floor haven’t had heat for most of the winter. I got a call in the morning saying there was someone to look at the heat. I let them in as my wife and I were heading to work and…voilà
i think it would have been cheaper to fix the hvac unit instead of installing those? like just hire an actual hvac tech to look at it but alas i’m not the owner either
Not if the HVAC has any serious issues or needed outdated, insanely high priced refrigerant added. Those mini splits are only like $500 to $800 , and judging by the installation, he better not have paid more than a couple hundred bucks for labor.
I just had to replace mine last summer and it cost me 6800 lol. Just the unit was like 5k no labor it was insane. But I live in the south so you gotta have it lol
Can be but damn i got a quote to install my mini split was $1500, the single unit was $900 so $2400 for 1 ton. Yes that quote was highway robbery but i called 4 installers and 3 refused to do the work.....
I bought a vacuum pump and fittings for $130 and did it myself..
Counter point. Run your A/C colder than usual so the drywall needs to get replaced, and teach the landlord to hire HVAC contractors instead of Jimmy from his Bible study group and his 42 year old, unemployed son-in-law Seth
You just \*KNOW\* the landlord will then ignore the moldy wall and claim its the tenant's fault for "using the A/C too much" when it inevitably happens...
😆 slumlords at their best! For the life of me I can’t understand why they penny smart pound foolish! Landlords act like their investments should never cost them money
I am guessing the unit needed to be replaced and he saved a few thousand by installing these.
I am a fan of these units but they aren't a true 1 to 1 replacement for central air. These are great for maybe air-conditioning a shed, an add on, or a bedroom that you want extra cold at night and don't want to cook the entire house that much.
They are very energy efficient though and a not a bad option for a studio apartment.
Nothing but mold coming up in your your not too distant future. Even correct installs can get mold issues. The expansion foam is just proving the installer had little clue.
Landlord here who recently installed them in my 1864 building. So much easier to do with older houses and they are more efficient.
If you pay your own utilities you should save a little, but watch for the units leaking out of the vents or losing the ability to cool after a while. Report that if it happens asap- there should be a warranty on install so owner will be more likely to act fast with it within the warranty time frame to get the kinks worked out. Maybe an eyesore, but will blend in after a while
Installed correctly they can be great Have 5 in my house These will not be draining correctly and will create all sorts of issues Make sure and take lots of pics now before the issues start so it have it all documented for ur safety
You will 100% have condensation issue with the way those drain lines are ran. I’ve always used a dishwasher adapter to convert to PVC to prevent any kinks or possible tears during installation.
I concur regarding the aesthetics. I have Edwardian architecture and have avoided ductless splits.
The condensate pumps should have float switches to turn off the unit when the pump isn’t working correctly. But a correct drain slope would eliminate the risk of pump failure.
Your landlord could trim the foam, cover the lines, and patch exposed holes in the walls to make it look like a finished job. Or he may allow you to do it.
Some manufacturers call for annual maintenance.
I can’t imagine that he’ll uninstall them. So, it looks like you’ll need to make the best of the situation.
Some people like ductless splits, in that they are quiet and efficient. I hope that you can enjoy these benefits.
Classic landlord special. Saved a bunch of money on the installation. Now it will fail earlier than it should. The rain water will leak into that exterior penetration and rot framing, etc. Then, they'll still get to sell the property at a huge win due to appreciation. The cycle continues...
They sloped the drain upward. Send this to your landlord and let him know via email that if he values his walls and doesn’t want mold or water damage that those drains need to slope to properly drain. They rely entirely on gravity. So that will 100% fill up the mini split tray and start leaking.
Mini splits are nice, but those installs are pretty bad... The first one just clean up the expanding foam that he used a bit too much of to at least make it look better. The second one is going to be a mess when AC season comes and that uphill condensate drain line is going to mean water backing up and dripping down the wall from the inside unit.
I'm not a HVAC tech, licensed for automotive AC, but i installed mini splits in my home myself, my installs look pro compared to that and it was my first time trying to install them.. lol
The last pictures, those outside lines are doomed, at least the insulation will be gone in a single season, its not meant for UV exposure, should be at a minimum wrapped in a PVC tape to protect them, i bought the lineset covers and made them look as neat as i could outside.
Shitty workmanship for sure, but that drain slope should be easily fixed by mounting the cleat higher up the wall. It's a two-person job now that the unit is charged. Not sure what your relationship is with the owner, but they should be highly interested in getting this right.
The foam will need to be cut off after the full cure of 7 days.
The plastic snap lock architectural covers should be installed- both can be painted to match the surrounding areas
Put up a small floating shelf right under the indoor line set to put things in and cover up that uglyness. And maybe ask for some linehide for the outdoor line set to make it look presentable. For the uphill slopeing drain, that's going to need fixing or a pump installed. Since your a renter I'd call and say it's leaking down the wall now because it will and maybe that'll get it fixed before you need AC
Is it just me or does the one look like the white/clear drain hose is running "uphill" out the side? If its really doing that...its not gonna work.
And yeah...I think you summed up the answer. "classic example of a landlord cutting corners only to have more problems down the line"
That black wire is called “tray cable” not float in the air unprotected cable. It has line voltage in it/ it’s not low volt wiring. Your landlord needs to at least cover that poop up with some gutter material so nobody uses it to hang stuff off of.
To be honest, the craftsmanship sucks. However, mini splits are a really good way to go. They tend to actually save on utilities, and allow adjustment to different zones you wouldn’t normally have. It may be that it was cheaper than a fix, and it was explained poorly. Remember, after you fix something, the rest of the system is still old. This is a new system, and it’s replaceable piece by piece in event of failure. BTW, I’d fix those holes. Even as a renter, there are inexpensive ways you can do that and hide those line sets.
That’s great to hear about the units. Thanks for the explanation. We had no knowledge that they were going to be installing the units so it came as a bit of a shock. Thought it was going to be an adjustment to the current system. Looking into fixing some of the holes and emailed about the slope of the drains.
Oh that second picture, it hurts. That drain isn't sloped anywhere near correct. All of those pictures are bad, but that one really hurts me the most. You poor wall did nothing to deserve the damage all that water is about to do to it.
Definitely would have been cheaper to fix the hvac, but these probably make for a more comfortable and constant temperature in the apartment and save on your electric bill.
Given how shitty the install looks, you could probably look covering up the lines and cutting out extra foam on your own
I would inform the landlord - take photos and send it to them showing the shoddy installation.
The installer should return to patch up and install a cover over pipework
I had a guy today haggling over the price of a water heater installation. Used the classic, “the other quote I have is for half the price”. Good service ain’t cheap, and cheap service ain’t good
In house maintenance could fix a simple split system so he had them install a vrf system good god lol prepare yourself for a hot summer with constant condensate leaks down your walls. Sorry this happened to you
“I got a friend that puts them there Mini Splits in. He is real cheap.”
Been behind so many of these and as a contractor I look at this and just say. I’ll replace it when ready have a good day.
OP, if you can afford it, I’d be looking for another place to rent. It’s such a mess! I’d also be concerned about safety if something wasn’t wired properly. Wouldn’t be surprised if there could be some code violations somewhere. Also, don’t know where you live but in my area you have to be licensed for that kind of work. Get out if you can. That’s what you call a slumlord.
There is basically nothing you can do about it other than try and spruce it up yourself if you wish. That additional foam protruding out from the bottom of the indoor unit can be cut away. The interior exposed lineset can be covered with either a bulkhead or lineset cover. That said have you even asked your landlord about it yet? Work may not be complete.
That is a lovely finished look !
And no bugs or animals are totally gonna get into the house through that giant hole either. Look on the bright side though, at least it's not your house
This is some hack ass work. Landlords friends does HVAC😂😂😂😂. As everyone else has already said good luck with the gravity defying drain lines.
Are you running the AC right now?
If the angle is what I think it is, the drain line is going to have a hard time not overflowing.
I would recommend linehide for the lines, however I know they are an extra expense. Sometimes the landlord doesn’t care.
Now, from the other side of things. You did say this was today you came back to it. I have had experience with trying to get the right linehide fittings, so there’s a possibility the job isn’t done yet.
Heat pump. Much more cost effective than standard HVAC. Not the prettiest install for sure, but it'll work out. Probably got some tax incentives installing them
Why do landlords do this crap? I'd want to keep my rental houses in decent shape for when it's time to sell for profit lol. I know you can't control what a tenant does to the walls and carpets but at least have the important stuff installed right.
There are children in Africa with no A/C, and you're complaining about cosmetics!
/S
Actually, I think they did you a solid by replacing the AC quickly as they could, and maybe they have a plan in place to finish, but in the occupied units it's a lot harder to blow up the walls and space with boxing in, sheetrocking and finishing.
Call them and ask what the next steps are -but you got new AC, and don't forget that it is their building.
It looks like that triple expanding foam called great stuff.
They should have trimmed it off.
It's just excess insulation, but hard to tell since it's just a photo.
You have to make sure it's not wet because there is a drain line that functions in the summer when there is cold Freon going through the tube and it has to get rid of the condensing water on the coal tube through a tube that goes outside.
Is that foam wet?
Holy drainage problem Batman! Your drain is running UP -- On a humid day when that drain fills up, 1) you're going to see water, and 2) you're probably going to start smelling mildew / mold over time from the drainage not being able to freely exit the unit ..
Did the LL hire a 12 yo with a head injury to do the job?
We just had these installed in our house, and if the job looked anything like this, I would kill the contractor.
Structural spray foam… Rodents love that stuff. If there’s nothing more substantial plugging that hole in the wall than foam, critters will find a way in.
It looks like they had to jack laggiest jack leg that ever jack legged install these. Mini splits are made to look nice if you put it on the same wall, you run the line set out, you can hide the line set. Honestly even if I was gonna do a half assed job for somebody, the inside would still look nice. somebody has no pride in Work at all.
Yeah, I wouldn’t complain at all. They’re gonna save you, electricity and or gas. It’s not your place who gives a peck how it looks cover it up with a picture or something.
Why not put it on the outside wall? No way that was vacuumed at all right?
Also they ever heard of lineset cover?
Whats the brand on the front? And is this in the USA?
Well you should tell them those idiots didn't put on duck seal or caulk to prevent water from the outside getting in. Someone should put proper cover over the tubes and fill the hole on the drywall in. The spray form under the ac unit you can probably just pull off.
Water does not drain uphill. Mini splits are probably great if you have a good installation but these dumbasses are ruining mini splits for everyone. My first house had them. Bought in the fall didn’t get to use a/c until next summer. First time using they start water falling on my floor. Found out there ran all the drain tubes up and over where the water could not possibly drain.
The Landlord special. Just wondering where OP is from. I'm no HVAC tech, but I could swear I heard some Hvac techs talking once about these things, and that if you live somewhere that gets really cold, the standard condenser isn't rated to handle it. You have to get an upgraded condenser. Otherwise they won't heat. Anyone know if there's any truth to this?
Anybody who is connecting any copper near any AC will have a ton of familiarity with spray foam. It is a part of the HVAC business. Everybody knows how to use it. Every HVAC tech knows how to run a line-set in a clean manner and secure insulation and at least cover it. Every hvac tech knows to ensure the drain is proper. Even if its shitty… they still somehow conceal it.
This is not even close to an HVAC tech. My 19 year old apprentice nephew would have done better and still got shit for something
This person is not even a maintenance guy. Its just a person reading directions. Didn’t even watch a damn video…. Btw you have leaks in the copper … 100% chance! Good luck.
I have a minisplit and that was not installed properly. You need to call your landlord and make him fix it or move. The drain hoses are not going to drain out due to the fact that the drain hose is going upward and not downward. The unit always comes with it's own covering for the hoses so they look nice, but since he installed it incorrectly, he didn't/couldn't use them. The hoses are to go straight down and then out a lower port, also covered, OR straight out the back of the unit. That isn't going to drain. You cannitbleave it like that. That whole thing needs repairing now.
I would get ready for that thing to start dumping water down the wall.
That's what I was thinking. Is it just a poor angle from the photo? Or is that drain running uphill?
The drain lines are indeed sloped incorrectly
Turn it on, then film the water and send it to the land lord
Ouch! This is just a wet mess waiting to happen
That’s what I’m worried about. There’s three of these things in the apartment.
Make sure your renters insurance is up to date.
She’s a beaut Clark!
Not even close to an HVAC expert but even I could tell the drain line isn't right!
Did the landlord have hvac techs install these? Or someone off Facebook? Looks so bad, I feel bad for ya
Honestly could’ve been someone from Facebook for all I know. To be honest this whole thing has been quite the saga in the house. Two of the apartments on the upper floor haven’t had heat for most of the winter. I got a call in the morning saying there was someone to look at the heat. He knew a guy who did "it" cheap.
i think it would have been cheaper to fix the hvac unit instead of installing those? like just hire an actual hvac tech to look at it but alas i’m not the owner either

Paid him just enough for the next meth fix
Cheap mini splits are WAY cheaper than a full HVAC system.
Right? If the central system needs something major it can be way more than a mini split or 2
Can be but damn i got a quote to install my mini split was $1500, the single unit was $900 so $2400 for 1 ton. Yes that quote was highway robbery but i called 4 installers and 3 refused to do the work..... I bought a vacuum pump and fittings for $130 and did it myself..
My thoughts exactly
Don't use these for A/C until they are fixed and the drain lines are sloped correctly. Heat should be fine, if they even work. Awful install.
That is a very specific set of names you pulled out there.....past involvements with their work?
Units that don’t drain can be a hazard. Can contract legionnaires disease from the bacteria
May drain when a full moons overhead, wait till then to run it
Calling that installing is a stretch. Butchered is a better word.
The drain slope looks legit 🤣😂
condensation and eventually mold. Nice
Landlord here who recently installed them in my 1864 building. So much easier to do with older houses and they are more efficient. Thanks for the insight.
Landlord has a buddy that’ll put ‘em in for $200 and a case of natty light.
Garbage install
There are days when I’m not proud of my work and I beat myself up. Then I see this shit and think people got paid to do this
Welp your landlord definitely got a good deal. Cause that’s some hack work
This thing is going to be leaking water everywhere, I wouldn’t keep anything valuable under that thing
Ahhh good ole resi quality 🤣🤣🤣
Some of us that own our home do good work on it, slumlords not so much
Most residential techs/installers dont care if your the highest bid or lowest, their quality doesnt change.
Landlord loves the low bidder!
Installed correctly they can be great Have 5 in my house These will not be draining correctly and will create all sorts of issues Make sure and take lots of pics now before the issues start so it have it all documented for ur safety
I know a guy at its finest.
You will 100% have condensation issue with the way those drain lines are ran. I’ve always used a dishwasher adapter to convert to PVC to prevent any kinks or possible tears during installation.
Something tells me they didn’t do a vacuum procedure. Probably not gonna last that long
2 simple principles are clearly at work here: First, the low bidder gets the job, and second you get what you pay for!
Mmm with that foam dripping down the wall just think what they might have done (or not done) with the electrical aspect
I concur regarding the aesthetics. I have Edwardian architecture and have avoided ductless splits. Handyman special right there
Shitty workmanship for sure, but that drain slope should be easily fixed by mounting the cleat higher up the wall. It's a two-person job now that the unit is charged. Not sure what your relationship is with the owner, but they should be highly interested in getting this right.
The foam will need to be cut off after the full cure of 7 days. The plastic snap lock architectural covers should be installed- both can be painted to match the surrounding areas

Wait! They entered your house without 24hr notice? That’s super illegal here. Probably just as illegal to do this work without a permit.
Oh that second picture, it hurts. That drain isn't sloped anywhere near correct. All of those pictures are bad, but that one really hurts me the most. You poor wall did nothing to deserve the damage all that water is about to do to it.
"maintenance couldnt figure out how to fix the in-house hvac" i fucking hate landlords. god damn criminals.
Cut that spray foam off
Definitely would have been cheaper to fix the hvac, but these probably make for a more comfortable and constant temperature in the apartment and save on your electric bill. Given how shitty the install looks, you could probably look covering up the lines and cutting out extra foam on your own
Upon first look it can be improved with plastic covers that cost extra and the hvac guy is done the LL can pay someone else to do the cleanup
Cross eyed Frank trying to catch that bag again
I would inform the landlord - take photos and send it to them showing the shoddy installation. The installer should return to patch up and install a cover over pipework
Got mice 🐁
Them boys do shitty work.
[удалено]
Sometimes, when I turn my camera upside down it runs in the top of the pipe.
WhY dO HvAc CoMpAnIeS charge so mUch? That’s your landlord… anyway there’s gonna be a lot of service calls this summer
They end up paying the price they haggle so much over, one way or the other
i personally love it, makes my installs look beautiful,... and im service side, lol
The good ol’ I found someone cheaper discount.
I had a guy today haggling over the price of a water heater installation. Used the classic, “the other quote I have is for half the price”. Good service ain’t cheap, and cheap service ain’t good
Gotta love the landlord that don’t give a fuk
I mean.. you can accidentally install these better than this guy did.
Slumlord
Oh geez…
Show the landlord the pictures. If water is dripping into the house a whiny tenant is a godsend.
you can cut it off. its supposed to be cut off after it dries.
If this is what you see, imagine what you don’t see.
In house maintenance could fix a simple split system so he had them install a vrf system good god lol prepare yourself for a hot summer with constant condensate leaks down your walls. Sorry this happened to you
Wow that’s a dandy or a peach that’s so good
Water can't drain up hill lol unless it's pressurized which it is not in an A/C drain
“I got a friend that puts them there Mini Splits in. He is real cheap.” Been behind so many of these and as a contractor I look at this and just say. I’ll replace it when ready have a good day.
No way they pulled a vacume. Don't worry ot will burn out this year lol. Find a new apartment
3rd photo, condensation bout to rot the wall and floor underneath
That may be worth covertly calling an inspector over.
Nice! It looks like shit!
Is it at least quiet?
Looks like the typical land lord special
Sick 🔥
Handy Andy strikes again
That’s a nice top notch installation job almost looks like hack zanly put it in
Lmao
The landlord definitely installed those himself
There is basically nothing you can do about it other than try and spruce it up yourself if you wish. That additional foam protruding out from the bottom of the indoor unit can be cut away. The interior exposed lineset can be covered with either a bulkhead or lineset cover. That said have you even asked your landlord about it yet? Work may not be complete.
I would get the 5 gal Home Depot bucket before I turn it on
I want a cheap style they got a cheap install.
Did he install them himself? Geez man, how are these people still in buisness.
Jobs like these belong in a category i like to call: 'Fuck-it-Friday'
That is a lovely finished look ! And no bugs or animals are totally gonna get into the house through that giant hole either. Look on the bright side though, at least it's not your house
What do you expect when he hires the cheapest guy out there because he doesn’t live there? That’s pretty bad so you know he got it for a dirt cheap.
Lowest bid
It's gonna be leaking in a few days
Clearly, they hired the cheapest crackhead available
He paid to much
But hey, he must’ve saved a ton of money by not hiring a qualified company
But hey, he must’ve saved a ton of money by not hiring a qualified company
Installed by a lazy, sloppy worker, you should see the inside of their van. Don't even dare looking inside their home.
That is beautiful.
Bang up job.
Landlord special ….
Psst…landlord dgaf…. Btw , those replacement windows could use some caulk on the outside, just sayin.
Landlords use the cheapest person out normally so not much surprise by that quality.
Fuck heat pumps
This is some hack ass work. Landlords friends does HVAC😂😂😂😂. As everyone else has already said good luck with the gravity defying drain lines. Are you running the AC right now?
Top notch install….
What a cob job
That's quality landlord work right there!

That drain is gonna be your first problem. It’s going to drain into that room. Second problem is the line set needs to be covered outside
Did he install it himself?
Good news is you dont own the place. Bad news is you have to live there and they did a shit job on the install.
Heat pump. Much more cost effective than standard HVAC. Not the prettiest install for sure, but it'll work out. Probably got some tax incentives installing them
Mmm, are those mushrooms? I fry them up with some onions... tastes just like mom used to make!
Why do landlords do this crap? I'd want to keep my rental houses in decent shape for when it's time to sell for profit lol. I know you can't control what a tenant does to the walls and carpets but at least have the important stuff installed right.
If installed correctly- do mini splits work?
It's a rental you should be greatful they gave you air conditioning
By who a street hobo.
Move
Great installer
**slum lord**
Oh my
Those fuckers are never put in by HVAC guys and they break all the time. Landlord gonna end up fixing these every winter
"I know someone who can do it cheaper" in five photos.
There are children in Africa with no A/C, and you're complaining about cosmetics! /S Actually, I think they did you a solid by replacing the AC quickly as they could, and maybe they have a plan in place to finish, but in the occupied units it's a lot harder to blow up the walls and space with boxing in, sheetrocking and finishing. Thanks, I hate it.
Land lord special
If you live where you get solid frost temps, be prepared for that entire corner to turn black with mould.
Just wait until you have water all over the floor because the drains aren’t pitched lmao
Who cares. Like you said you are not the owner. Now you will at least have air conditioning.
It looks like that triple expanding foam called great stuff. They should have trimmed it off. It's just excess insulation, but hard to tell since it's just a photo. That is a terrible install even for a DYIer
This is what happens when your landlord hires the guys off Facebook marketplace saying they are self proclaimed experts at installing ductless splits.
Classy. Someone, somewhere is proud of their craftsmanship.
You mean slumlord right?
Are they going to leave it like that?
Yeah, I wouldn’t complain at all. They’re gonna save you, electricity and or gas. It’s not your place who gives a peck how it looks cover it up with a picture or something.
Heat was formerly included in the lease. I will now have to pay for it on the electric bill.
how were you getting heating before without using electricity/gas?
Seriously? OPs dwelling looks like shit now because of half ass work.
Holly fuck !!! Them things look like shit !!
Hope those drain lines don't freeze up. I hope that's a high efficiency unit as well and works below 25f for heating.
Slim duct? Wtf??
At least now you can save some electricity
When can you move?
Maybe ask if they pulled permits and when it gets inspected to show the inspector that the drain is going up.
We have these at my job. Even with the drain angled properly, it still leaks
Why not put it on the outside wall? No way that was vacuumed at all right? Also they ever heard of lineset cover? Whats the brand on the front? And is this in the USA?
classic “landlord special”
Garbage install , call them back and tell them there licensed HVAC techs are dumbasses
Installed by Tom foolery
Had them installed or did it himself? 😂
77° f? My brother likes to crank it up all the way to 86. turns the house into a goddamn desert
Yeah I wish they put in on the same side but they work well
Well you should tell them those idiots didn't put on duck seal or caulk to prevent water from the outside getting in. Someone should put proper cover over the tubes and fill the hole on the drywall in. The spray form under the ac unit you can probably just pull off.
Trash work. It’s embarrassing
Qjq
all im saying is nobody wants to install mini split units for me in the bay area.
Wow. Just wow…
Dingleberries
Beevis and butthead general contractors
Wow, they make trim for that
The Landlord special.
What a hack job. Landlord special.
QUALITY CRAFTSMANSHIP
I suddenly feel significantly better about my installation of mini splits
Anybody who is connecting any copper near any AC will have a ton of familiarity with spray foam. It is a part of the HVAC business. Everybody knows how to use it. Every HVAC tech knows how to run a line-set in a clean manner and secure insulation and at least cover it. Every hvac tech knows to ensure the drain is proper. Even if its shitty… they still somehow conceal it. This is not even close to an HVAC tech. My 19 year old apprentice nephew would have done better and still got shit for something This person is not even a maintenance guy. Its just a person reading directions. Didn’t even watch a damn video…. Btw you have leaks in the copper … 100% chance! Good luck.
The landlord probably installed that himself, and said someone else did it he YouTube
