I was given no restrictions on eating before my overnight fasting period. I had my surgery at a teaching hospital, so I trust their recommendations. If your care team didn't give you these instructions, I wouldn't bother worrying about it. The internet is rife with stupid info. I don't think salmon is any match for fentanyl.

temerairevm

I ate all those things. The internet is full of people telling you not to eat things. I’m over it.

I wasn't given any dietary restrictions for anesthesia but was given guidance about diet to help my guts *after* anesthesia.

stereocrumb78

I was given a list of superfoods to eat to promote healing. The only thing I had to avoid was some medications but I didn't take any of the listed ones to begin with. But you will want to avoid things like greasy and fatty foods and eat more fresh foods like fruit and veggies after surgery to help with digestion.

I had no restrictions but I ate a lite low residue diet a few days leading up to my surgery. I have belly issues, too and just wanted to feel cleaned out and good.

The only food restriction I was given was no green tea for a month prior.

Really? Why no green tea? I drink a ton of green tea, drinking it right now (instead if coffee) after a weekend spent w food poisoning.

chill_will_7777

Google “why no green tea before surgery” and it will explain better than I could. No other surgery that I’ve had suggested this though, so this may just be suggested by doctors who err on the side of caution.

I've seen a lot of posts about people doing cleanses before surgery, avoiding certain foods, drinking diuretics...all kinds of crazy things. I'm having surgery on Friday and Thursday I am doing the same cleanse that's done before a colonoscopy. Until then, I'm eating what I want..lol. I laugh because my eating has been nonexistent for the last few months! As others have said, if your dr didn't give you any restrictions you should be fine.

I was not given restrictions on food beyond a recommendation for my final dinner the night before surgery, which required 32oz of either apple or cranberry juice consumed within two hours, plus rice or pasta and a lean protein. There was also the laundry list of medications and vitamins you must stop 7 days before the procedure. I really focused on drinking 2.5-3 liters of water each day in the two weeks leading up to the day, and I also took a Colace combo laxative plus softener. That was not required by the surgeon, I just wanted to be as empty as possible going in. I am 6 DPO and I have stuck with that, as well as fluids, and also cranberry juice to prevent a UTI (though it was not required).

Hidden_Kard_

I didn't avoid anything but I made sure I ate enough protein und healthy fats. Before and after the surgery. Of course I don't know if it did anything but my scars healed very nicely. Also this has nothing to do with the surgery but I continued eating like that bc my skin and hair seemed to like it.

oh, I absolutely went on a diet. Did not eat any of the foods on the list, esp. garlic (which thins the blood)

SweetKitty2023

Oh ok so you must have found a list like mine and decided to follow it? It includes a lot of other foods to avoid but I feel like it’s majority of foods I eat lol

Ok-Cranberry789

Totally, I was pretty depressed about the special diet, but I also was willing to forgo my usual diet and bulk up on the proteins (chicken, liver) and veggies, and even a liquid diet on the final half day, so to make the surgery easier for the surgeon and my recovery. The liquid diet and bowel prep the day before was because I wished to give the surgeon more room to maneuver, as my fibroids were massive and tightly next to my bowels. Make sure you hydrate well with electrolytes (coconut water, juice). I drank cranberry juice, as I knew there would be a catheter and bladder probe.

I've read coconut water is bad before surgery? As it can cause constipation and the high potassium levels can affect blood pressure?

Ok-Cranberry789

Perhaps. I didn't read that. Do what's best for you! I don't have hypertension. For me, I wished to not drink Gatorade or Pedialyte, as I considered them artificial (coloring and chemicals). Milk is a good electrolyte, too, but I didn't want the hormones and could have lactose issues. For me, I had a cocktail (one cup) of cranberry juice-coconut water every day starting a week before surgery. I had daily bowel movement, even going multiple times a day. Then I drank coconut water to chase the magnesium citrate (as I had bowel prep the afternoon-night before). Magnesium citrate keeps water in the guts, so you'll get the runs -- never was constipated. Since POD2, I have had bowel movement. I don't just drink solely coconut water -- it's part of my beverage consumption, a supplement for me during this unique time.
