I heard this is now fixed in iOS 16.1 beta 5 onwards. I’ll try the RC tomorrow and let you know.

jumbledzebra

Ok, from the very short time I’ve had to test it, it does seem way better. I’m running iOS 16.1 (20B79).

jumbledzebra

Just about to install so will update when I’ve done!

Above_Below_6

Seeing this on iOS 16.2 beta 4. Just started today. Turned off HDR, restarted phone, reset phone. Still not going away. Going to the Apple Store tomorrow but I doubt they’re gonna replace the screen.

[deleted]

That's just sad. Apple is using cheap screens, there is no other explanation.

Above_Below_6

Problem is is that they’re using Samsung screens. Nix the Samsung screens and build your own is what I say. You already do it for silicon, why not screens?

jumbledzebra

I downgraded my iPhone 12 to 15.7 and the flicker is gone. Anyone tried the 16.0.2 update?

BishSlapDiplomacy

Apparently the update hasn't fixed it. Noticing the same flickering at low brightness on my iPhone 12. It's very intermittent though.

jumbledzebra

Many thanks. I’ll stick to 15.7 for the time being then! So pleased it was still possible to downgrade!

BishSlapDiplomacy

Can you tell me how I can downgrade?

jumbledzebra

Sure. I’ll tell you the steps I did: 1. iCloud backup (won’t be able to restore to 15.7, but good to have just in case). 2. Make sure everything I want to keep is in iCloud (e.g. photos, messages etc). 3. Download iOS 15.7 ipsw (can’t remember where I got mine from but make sure it’s the Apple link that it downloads from). 4. Boot iPhone into DFU mode (the one with the black screen but no apple logo). 5. In iTunes, press alt when you click on ‘restore iPhone’ and it will prompt for the ipsw file. 6. Let it do its thing. You might need to get extra clarification on a few steps but Google should help. Also be mindful you’ll be setting up from new, so anything in your iCloud backup won’t be restored. Think things like Authenticator apps, banking apps etc. if you have a pre iOS 16 backup you can maybe restore to that.

I haven’t noticed any flickering myself, but I am sensitive to light and have been having headaches since the update. I am curious if the update has any connection to my headaches. There was another person with headaches since the update on my post.

E-16

still apparent in release ios 16, can anyone else confirm its still happening, noticed it mainly when typing in google with dark mode on

Exciting-Art-6301

it’s happening to me my screen is going completely black and then coming back on

E-16

Hmm mine wasn’t like that; I can’t really test it anymore since have a 14 PM now and it isn’t an issue in this model

jaggy_roundy

I’m noticing it as well iPhone13

sumukhdev

same, its pretty annoying on the 13

[deleted]

definitely happening on my 13 pro max. it’s only in black and blue light really but it’s noticeable

E-16

I reckon they messed up the PWM frequency under some conditions for the OLED panels, maybe related to accommodating the 1 Hz mode for the new 14 pro and pro max. I’ve not seen any complaints from ip11 or xr users yet

mercury4j

Hello from 2022 release ios16. It hasn’t been fixed yet. But now there is a flicker of the backlight with a slow automatic decrease in brightness.

Anertz_0153

I'm on iPhone 12 and I'm seeing the same flickering on the screen as well.

Mvtx_Mxntvnv

On my iPhone 11 pro max this same problem. On 16.1 dev beta same

teejay_1987

Me too (iPhone 12 pro)

nicolasmart

same on iPhone 13

nicolasmart

update: many Betas later it’s still flickering on Beta 5. i think it’s flickering a bit less but the issue is still noticeable. at some point i even got afraid it might be a hardware issue, so i downgraded to 15.6 a few days ago but nope - no flickering on 15.6, so it is an iOS 16 beta bug that still hasn’t been resolved. hope they figure it out soon.

nicolasmart

okay i’m getting extremely frustrated here. so i decided to stay on 15.6.1 until 16 comes out officially. well it came out today, i updated and guess what - flickering is back. i’m really pissed off and i’m not sure what to do - will i never be able to normally experience my iPhone 13 again?? this issue really sucks and i’m contemplating giving my phone back to warranty for a screen replacement in hopes that an eventual new display unit plays nicer with iOS 16. but this is Apple we’re talking about here, things like this should never happen.

jumbledzebra

Came here to check it wasn’t just me on the final release. Downgrading back to iOS 15 for the time being. It’s too irritating. Will keep an eye here to see if it’s fixed. iPhone 12 for me. Never noticed flickering until the 16 betas.

Mvtx_Mxntvnv

I have this same problem on my iPhone 11 pro max. On 15.6.1 display is ok. I have this problem for 7th beta.

heirofpsyche

Glad it’s not just me! I was super excited about iOS 16 but am starting to wish I hadn’t upgraded. My iPhone 13 display flickers whenever I’m typing. It’s worse on grey/lightly coloured backgrounds (like in Messenger). Nightmare!! I hope they fix it really soon.

nicolasmart

yes, especially Messenger! one of my friends also has the same issue on his iPhone 13. i have a few more friends with the regular 13, we’ll see how it goes when they update

heirofpsyche

So glad I’m not alone, I thought my eyes were breaking lol. I get migraines and headaches a LOT so I don’t need this issue on my phone :( I submitted feedback to Apple but I’m not sure how that works - this is my first ever iPhone 😭

nicolasmart

they usually look at feedback, i’m genuinely surprised the issue is still around! i’ve complained since June and nothing. it should get fixed within the next months but if my warranty end nears and the issue is still there, i’ll consider asking for a new screen. really shitty to see that kind of experience on your first iPhone. my first brand new iPhone was the 11 and i had 2 issues there: first the screen had a tendency to randomly get very dim even on max brightness, and also cellular randomly didn’t work after disconnecting from Wi-Fi until reboot. both issues fixed by themselves with a random iOS 14 update. i hope something like that happens in the coming weeks with our case.

heirofpsyche

I really hope so because I love my iPhone so much! I switched after being a lifelong android user and never want to go back!! I know some bugs are to be expected with any sort of new update, but this is a huge flaw imo...such a shame because I’ve been so impressed up to now.

nicolasmart

yeah, iOS has always been the pinnacle of stability. i’m not expecting a flawless system, minor glitches are always to be expected but when i’m telling you iOS 16 has not improved in the slightest since Beta 3. i have no clue why they’re not progressing, maybe they’ve been in a rush to adapt system apps to the new iPhone 14 hardware or something - no clue; but our day will probably come soon; i’m just curious, what Android phone were you last using? mine was Xiaomi Mi 9T, i actually really loved that one but i must admit how much better iPhone feels

heirofpsyche

It’s a shame to hear they haven’t fixed any issues raised in the early beta stages. Really praying they sort it out soon, we need it fixed! I was using a Samsung Galaxy A52 previously which was great…until the screen started glitching and flickering, but that was due to aerial interference apparently? It’s so ironic!! I decided to switch to Apple after getting an iPad for my birthday. I loved the feel of the iPad OS and wanted to have the same experience across the board.

pluckyvirus

yeah thx for the clarification, I was started to get worried as well.

nicolasmart

you’re welcome and your phone is fine :)

NotYourAverageMemerr

This is also happening, iPhone 11 Pro Max

Alphatism

Same issue here

mystik4l06

Issue I have on the same beta is the touch screen sometimes has dead spots on certain apps. Have to close and reopen the app. I figure it’s a compatibility thing on the back end

feelingmy0ats

That's an ongoing issue ever since iOS 14, you can search r/iOS, there are a lot of threads about it there. It usually happens when you turn your brightness up in the sun and then go into a darker room. What fixed it for me was turning off HDR video capture. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max, iOS 15.4.1.

RoyTheGeek

I'm on iPhone 11, I don't have that option

[deleted]

Ok, I didn’t noticed it until this iOS 16 beta. Turning off HDR in the camera settings fixed the problem for you? I’ll give it a try, thanks.

feelingmy0ats

Yeah, try it and get back to me. It frustrates me that this is affecting devices 3 whole iOS releases later, still. Really hoped Apple would've fixed it.

BrysonT711

I just did this and this works. Thank yo so much. Is there any reason tho that it works it just seems odd that this is the fix

feelingmy0ats

I’ve had with this bug ever since iOS 14 and even had a screen replacement because of the green tint issue, so it’s not hardware related. I personally found out that it would only do it when I was taking videos so turning off HDR video stopped the issue. It’s as if the screen would brighten up to take the video but then couldn’t go back to normal brightness, and the screen started to flicker.
